The tiny exception is the one ungenerous moment in the film, when the girl playing Mary,
who sang sweetly in the rehearsal scene, was given a silly cinematic reason to have to leave the stage just before her solo, so that Whitney Houston had to come on and sing the Mary part.
Now, excuse me, but this Barbra Streisand moment was so contrary to the spirit of this film
that it really stood out. We could have had one musical number in the film without Whitney
Houston in the center of it. In fact, it would have been far more effective to see her, the adult
who prepared this song, watching with pride from the wings. Hollywood's ugly face
intruded, just for that moment, as the star is seen pushing the little person out of the way and
taking the stage. But the moment soon passes, and the rest of the film more than makes up for
it.)
