Missy:

It hadn't been long since she had gone to sleep, maybe and hour or so, she didn't quite know, but Missy decided it was time to leave, even if it meant going back to her horrible life, which she hated. She sat up on the cot, and looked around. No one seemed to care that she was around, so she just pulled the O2 supplier off her face and called out "IS It OKAY IF I LEAVE NOW?" She was almost hoping they would make her stay, she didn't really want to continue with her life, but she knew she had to. She almost wanted to call out 'is it okay if i die now?' but she didn't. It would be useless. Missy looked around to see if anyone would answer. If they didn't then she would take as they didn't care and leave, or maybe go back to sleep, either one would suit her fine.

Angio and Teal'c stepped into the infirmary, bearing the unconscious girl between them. She was leaned against Angio's shoulder, her head drooped down onto her chest. Standing in the doorway, Angio called out, "Can we get a nurse here please? This girl has a broken arm, and I think she hit her head too."

Yuma was sitting in his big red chair at the end of his workstation, downing multiple packs of sugar. He called his thrown the Persecution Perch and used the high backed, long legged, scarlet seat all the time to boast him up so that he could watch his terminal and lean down to shout death threats at any child who so much as sat up without permission, without missing a beat. Ah how Yuma LOVED his chair. It looked, though, like it had been through the nine circles of hell and back. The back was torn out as if a slack bulldozer had done half its job in demolishing it. The armrests were like daggers with springs jutting up haphazardly with the purpose only to flay any one who came near. The seat was burned almost through with a hot green substance that spilled all over the sides to create a Christmas motif in places. The legs of the chair had all but given out, and they strained so hard to hold the thing up it was quite possible to see the things struggling at times to stay in the game. In fact one of the legs had fallen off, to be discarded and replaced with a thick stack of cardboard cylinders, packed strategically into the hole in the base.

Yes this was Yuma's thrown; yes he had built the thing by hand in about an hour on his first day from medical scraps and pieces of discarded odds and ends. Yes, it was off limits, and there was a sign above, like all the others Yuma possessed, that claimed that it was in fact OKAY for the chair to be tested by any willing participant. The only problem was that everyone who got near the chair swore they heard it growling, and after stooping to sit in it, quickly realized how many possible skin lasserations could be had from this weapon of destruction. It was true that the most powerful weapon on public display in all of Battle School was sitting dead in the middle of the Infirmary. It was only Yuma, the man accomplished in all things satirical, that could swing his thin frame into the chair and not draw blood or experiance serious skin abrasions. Yuma was the only on that could conquer the Persecution Perch, and he felt he had a divine right to rule. And he did.

The small girl, Missy chose this instant to get up and suggest loudly "IS It OKAY IF I LEAVE NOW?" Yuma had all the intention of jumping from his thrown and body slamming her for trying to rush his expertise but decided it wasn’t worth it seeing as he hadn’t given her the order to stay, and playing dumb he decided that he also hadn’t heard her being ordered to stay, even though it had been written in quite a few places, he also suddenly went blind, in a desperate attempt to rid his terminal of The Noodle. He slid down, a startling feat for an un-beheaded person who had just wiggled out of the death trap he called a stool, and said, “Well so you want to leave?” He said delighted, the way he smiled was obscure in its meaning, yet limitlessly obscure and ironically bright in sharp contrast to his usually gloomy presence. He filled out a few forms with a spring in his step, then handed them to her to sign, “If anyone asks why you’re out so early it’s because you made a huge recovery in a matter of seven seconds, I, your trusty nurse, thought it would be anything but right to make you stay here, and so I checked you out.” He waited for her to sign and added as he reached to get them back, “And a piece of advice? AIR IS FREE. You only pay for it when it comes out of that pump, so Breathe. OFTEN. And be off with you….” He said taking the forms back and reclining in his chair. If she left she left. If she decided to stay and be verbally abused more, that was her problem.

Livy had just returned from her lunch in the garden with Mac. She walked back in contemplative silence and went the opposite direction that he headed in as soon as they reached the infirmary. The lunch had not gone off at all as she'd hoped or expected. "Have a nice day. Sure to see you later." She called out to Mac over her shoulder with a slight smile. She felt a little bit embarassed and awkward. There would be time to work it out later, she thought to herself as she pushed all thoughts of Mac aside for the time being.

Livy headed towards the sinks at the back of the workstation and scrubbed in. Yuma was sitting at the desk in his red, death trap chair. She walked over to talk to him and caught herself just before she leaned on the wing of the chair. Leaning on that thing was not only a hazard for her, but for Yuma as well. If the chair collapsed, which it was sure to someday, not only would it surely injure the person leaning on it, but the various springs and jagged edges would collapse in on Yuma. Quite possibly a fitting way for him to go... Livy couldn't help but muse. Choosing to lean on something more stable, Livy leaned on the nurses station. "Yuma," Livy said in her most syrupy sweet voice, so as not to wake the beast within, "have I missed anything terribly important?"

Before Yuma could even begin to respond with some bile-mouthed, wicked response, Angio and Teal'c burst through the infirmary doors. "Can we get a nurse here please? This girl has a broken arm, and I think she hit her head too." Angio bellowed, as they rushed the unconscious girl in. "Don't get up, I've got it." Livy said to Yuma, then couldn't help but add, "I wouldn't want you to injure yourself trying to rise out of that...contraption."

Livy rushed to the boys' side, they were already heading to a bedside. "That's it, lay her there. Perfect." Livy said in a pleasant tone. Livy assessed the girl, unconscious, good breathing, pulse good. Pupils equal and reactive to light. Livy looked at the girls left arm. It was splinted with a flash gun and the belt from a flash suit then a sling was created using more flash suit belts. Very clever. "Do either of you know how she sustained these injuries, and, err, who did this? To her arm I mean, who splinted this?" Livy said, giving the boys and inquisitive look.

Angio helped to lay the girl on the bed, then turned to answer the nurse. "She was... I guess you could say dancing in the battleroom and lost control. She got slammed into a wall pretty hard; she tried to stop herself but..." he trailed off.

The nurse was still watching him; he realized she had asked something else. "Oh, that? I did that. I had some first aid training back on Earth... never thought I'd use it here..." He smiled weakly.

Livy listened intently and watched Angio as he spoke. Her eyes crinkled into a smile when he admitted that yes, it was he that had splinted the arm. "Well, I have to tell you, I'm impressed. You did a great job here. It was very clever of you to use the flash gun. I take it it's yours?" Livy said as she walked to a cupboard and pulled out a medical splint. She unwrapped the flash suit belts and handed them, and the flash gun back to Angio as she resplinted the arm. "Thank you both for your help." Livy said, amicably. "And you," said Livy, addressing Angio, "the course you took shows you to be very competent in what you learned. Splendid job."

Livy turned back to care for the young girl. She pushed the airphone button on the wall and said, "I'm going to need X Rays done here at bed 12. Thank you."

"Yes, it's mine." Angio said. He took the gun and belts from the nurse. After handing Teal'c's belt back to him (which he promptly put back on) he strapped on his own belt and put the gun back in its holster.

"The course you took shows you to be very competent in what you learned. Splendid job." said the nurse. Angio looked up. "Thank you, ma'am."

Teal'c spoke up. "Let's head back to the barracks." Angio nodded and followed Teal'c out of the Infirmary, heading for the Tide barracks.

"I wouldn't want you to injure yourself trying to rise out of that...contraption."

Yuma was mid-sentence into a crushing little put down he'd created especially for her during his off time, but he didn't get to execute it before he left. He sighed and saved it for latter, there'd be a need for it at some time. He rose out of the insurance claim waiting to happen to get on those X-rays. He didn't mind doing X-rays, they were an excuse to wear his shiny gold foiled lead. Of course they sported the colors of his former army, Griffin, and he delighted in any excuse to blind a child in the sparkles of his custom golden chest plate. But the insigna on the left wasn't at all like the Griffin one you'd expect, it had YUMA ARMY curved around a crudely drawn self portrate taht looked a lot like an American Eagle seal. It had displayed him holding a child in one hand and a bundle of flaming arrows in the other. Where the olive leaf should be there was gauze and bondage tape. It was one of the hundreds of sublimbinal messages littered throughout his workstation.

"Alright baby, guess what? You're on candid camera," He said wheeling her to the X-ray room. He gently laid her wrist on the table, running back behind the lead wall to minimize the size of the picture, untill he had a good shot of just her forearm. He leaned over so he could see her and he tapped on the glass. "Say CHEESE, or as I'd perfure, 'I-won't-run-around-the-battleroom-dancing-like-a-diseased-banshee-again-so-UncleYuma-won't-have-to-waste-film-on-me.'" To Yuma's delight the girl actually tried to repeat the last phrase but found she only had the intelligence to manage 'cheese'. He went in and showed her the prints, telling her how hiduous they were, and explained to her, in detail what could lie in store for her if they didn't quote: 'AMPUTATE NOW!'. The girl was horrified untill another nurse rescude her, and wisked her away with the X-rays and dismissed Yuma, after a sound verbal beating.

Yuma sat back on his thrown again, this time more occupied further ridicule by shotting rubber bands at the anal nurse than watching his kingdom.

(OOC - harrumph. Not like you're giving me a lot to go on.)

Motz was grabbing her hand. He looked upset, like he was trying to say something. Teteli held his hand tightly, tears springing suddenly to her eyes. What could she do? Something was wrong, she didn't know what, she didn't know how to help. He didn't look like he was in physical pain, or else she'd call a doctor. Trying to keep the panic out of her voice, to sound reassuring, she spoke softly. "Motz, Motz, shh, it's ok, it's ok, you're ok, everything's gonna be fine, we'll take care of you, you don't have to worry about anything, I'm here, you can talk to me, you can trust me, everything's ok..." she rambled on, not entirely sure what she was saying, holding his hand with one hand and touching his shoulder, his face, with the other, not sure who she was trying to reassure, him or herself.

Teteli looked down at him, relieved that he was speaking again, but still worried. "Are you sure you want to go?" she asked. He looked awfully pale, and she thought he might faint again if he tried to sit up, much less walk. "Why don't we wait around a bit for the doctor to come by again, and then leave? What happened to you, anyway?" she asked quickly, before he could protest, hoping to stall him and buy time - and to satisfy her own curiosity, she admitted to herself. "Why are you in here?"

(OOC - Yeah, i know what happened, someone told me a good while ago - this is the soonest I could get Teteli near enough to him to comment! So you just have him go ahead and tell her what's going on, so she can make a fuss over him and be all motherly and reassuring, she likes that sort of thing! Ok? )

His consciousness nagged him the whole way. Why are you going to slaughter when you could tell a lie and live? Then it would counter, Better to stand and die like a man than be live as a liar. So he walked in circles trying to find a place to dump her or save her, indecision prominent. When he stopped walking it would demand, Standing still are we, coward? And when he moved his conscious would scream You fool where will you go? He did go somewhere in a round about way, after the enthusiasm of Dianna's promise of life wore off and the threat of the end of his own set in. And in that way he found a very circuitous path that lead him to the milky, sterile walls of the Infirmary.

Demos walked into the Infirmary, passing under the sign swallowing dryly. A distracted look filled his otherwise handsome face, as if he were preoccupied with some other task, and yet the task at hand was all consuming. He held Dianna easily, his arms strong enough to hold her but weak from the adrenaline that was pumping through his body. Surely she felt this way in her last breaths as if the world were coming in on her, surely she regretted ever meeting Demos. Now Nick felt like the victim, all alone and confused and suddenly he had wished Roman was there to support him, someone had to. They had said the Panamanian was crazy, maybe it was true, why had he come at all?

He felt sick with dread as he trudged along, the floor resonating with the scuffing of his feet as he shuffled to a nurse a bit dazed. He snapped out of it instantly as the gray eyed beauty looked at him, he didn't want to look weak, helpless, guilty, but he was, and it was hard to pretend to be the mellow calm guy he really was.

"I need help." His voice cracked, as the baritone suddenly wavered into a soprano and he felt ashamed. Perhaps she would think it was her alluring beauty that drove this boy to be so skittish, not his all encompassing guilt. He held the girl out to her, a little reluctantly, his soft brown eyes seeming to search her frantically, seemed to scan the whole room, as if it was an unsafe place that he had to leave as soon as possible. His throat was dry as he was about to explain to her what happened, but he cut off his speech quickly. If she wanted to know she would ask.

He felt like a coward then, had he not said he'd turn himself in, and here he was not doing that, but then again he didn't want to be a fool and give himself away if it wasn't necessary.

BE HONORABLE TELL THE TRUTH!
DON'T BE FOOLISH TELL HER NOTHING!

He had to compromise, he'd tell her nothing except exactly what she asked. Nothing more nothing less.

Livy saw Demos walk into the infirmary. His eyes searching, almost uncomfortably, the surroundings. He looked scared, distraught; almost tormented. "I need help," he croaked at her in a heartbreakingly high pitch. Her eyes met his, in a searching way, and the moment almost seemed to hang in the air. What was barely a second seemed to pass like a slow motion eternity. A nagging thought in the back of Livy's head said, Something's not right. Apart from the unconscious girl in his arms; him, there was something not right with him. Am I imagining things? Livy's thoughts rolled on.

The expression of dread on his face spurned her into action. She rushed over and helped him move Dianna over to a stretcher. Diana was limp, and pale; aken to a sickly rag doll. Livy took up her wrist and began to check her pulse as she looked the girl over. "What happened?" Livy asked, not looking up at Demos.

"What happened?"

What didn't happen.

Demos looked at the woman once more, really this time, in the face, with his troubled eyes wavering on the verge of chaotic calmness and placid insanity. Of course neither of these emotions could register in Demos because they were too intense a guilt for him to have ever encountered anything like it. He wanted to tell the truth and as he help lay Dianna, his love and hate, out onto the table he realized suddenly that this was a woman, he could trust. Not that she could help him anymore than helping Dianna, just that she was his way out, and if he didn't say what he needed to say, he'd die of some kind of heart failure triggered by the failure of his heart's strength to handle this situation like the man he claimed to be.

He put his hand on Livy's arm to get her attention, to make her look at him and he realized then too that he was not a man, just a boy and in his eyes reflected the weight of the world that stooped his back and buckled his knees in the ponderous mass of unthinkable guilt. He was a boy, he ventured for once, he was a boy and he was not made fully grown, wasn't able to reach his own impossible standards of righteousness, the way he'd always hoped to be, the way he'd always tried to be. He was a boy turning twelve and on the eve of his birthday, the day he had set for himself to assume an application for command, all that was going out of the window for a poor choice he'd made less than an ten minutes ago. Eleven years of work gone in eleven minutes. It was depressing but it was right.

"It was me." He stuttered, "I.. We.. They came into our practice and they.. they shamed our whole army, I felt so ashamed, sunken, heartbroken, weak, then. And we went to their army, to attack back, non-violently I said. I promised, I gave my word." He choked, "And then transfers came... they came and they would have told, they would have told, I had to do it." He was shaking and his eyes glistened with tears and his forehead glistened with sweat, "I beat her for her carelessness, I wanted them to go away, if she had come a minute later none of this would have happened. No it's not her fault if I would have been a better man none of this would have happened. I overpowered her because I was weak, and now I am nothing." He said so quietly the last words that a whisper couldn't define the level, yet the words were clear and true. "Please, ma'am, help her, it's too late for me." He stood there looking dazed, his eyes glazed over as if he'd suddenly gone blind. He didn't faint, just grabbed the rail to her bed suddenly as his legs buckled and he collapsed onto the floor.

He couldn't live this way. Couldn't lie like this, it was eating him alive and he'd be dead before he could make up for the sin he had committed. He couldn't go home to his father. His father would never approve of the scum his infidel of a son had become. He'd curse The IF and then just as soon disown his namesake. Nick Demos III made a discussion then, whether he could leave the story to Livy and trust her with his final confessional or he could get up bravely and take it like a man. He prayed then, for forgiveness of what would happen next, for forgiveness for not being the person he should have been, and in all his prayer he didn't ask to be forgiven for Dianna, he disserved what he got.

In that moment he stopped breathing, almost gratefully, and his lips turned blue curled into the damned smile of fallen angel.
He wasn't a man then, as the nurses crowded around, then as they tried everything to save him, then as he went into and out of seizures. All the nurses talked about as they shipped him back Earthside for 'further treatment' was how nice a boy he had been, how polite and trustworthy he was, how curtious and valiant he was. And it seemed apparent that he was never coming back. The files, filled correctly for a first time in a long time, said it was all due to stress, but from where the nurses didn't know.

Only one knew and it was to her discretion whether to tell or not. Whether to taint this youth's good name, and let him rest in the minds of all as a peaceful child, or defend the other and tell the truth about the disastrous fall of the boy. Demos never hated meeting Dianna, it was a mercy killing by all merits, the stress, the standards he had for himself were too great for any one person to begin with. One mistake pushed him this far, what would have happened if he had graduated command and made it all the way? What would have happened to this poor soul that was going back to the place of his origin? Livy was the only one with a clue, the last person he spoke to, could she, or anyone, tell the story of the tragic fall of the tragic hero, Demos: the child who died of guilt.

Oh and to clarify, Demos did not die in the infirmary he died offscreen, on Earth or a ship on the way there. OKay so I finally 'killed' him. I'm not sure if he's really gone or not, this is an up in the air kind of thing. Now I'm all depressed I love(d) Demos. -ooc

Dianna slowly and painfully opened her eyes and saw a sterile white light beaming straight at her face. She immediately shut them, causing pain as well. Am I dead? she thought. I didn't think dying would hurt so much... She opened her eyes again, this time slowly, and saw a person standing over her. Who could it be? She thought. She opened her mouth to speak but it caused to much pain, causing her to groan softly. She could taste a mouthful of blood and forced down the vomit while she remembered what exactly had happened to her.

Demos had crossed the line. He hurt a new transfer; she hated to see innocent people hurt like that. She stood up to him; she insulted his Spanish honor. The boy was so obsessed with being honorable, she dared him to break that honor and hit a girl. He did. Demos did more than hit Dianna; he wanted to kill her. He tried-- he probably thought he did kill her.

It then occurred to Dianna that she was in a soft bed, not like those in the barracks. She managed to open her eyes a little more, look past the bright glare of the white lights, and see the sterile walls of the infirmary.

(ooc- I'm sorry if some nurse was supposed to handle this, but I need to speed it up. Sorry.-ooc)

The nurses in the infirmary were nice. They fed Dianna, put bandages on her wounds, and she slowly got better. She still couldn't get up and walk very easily, and she hadn't seen anyone from any other army besides the other kids in the infirmary, who she didn't recognize. The nurses spoke with her about almost anything--anything but Demos and what had happened. Because of their silence, Dianna presumed something serious had happened to Demos after she was taken to the infirmary. The nurse had let it slip that Demos was the one who brought her there--he must have felt so remorseful for what he did.

She had a serious inner conflict. Why did I say that to him... Why did I provoke him to hit me? It's all my fault--he should not have been punished. She would think. Then she would think, He didn't only hit me, he tried to kill me. He got so offended at one small remark--AND he broke his promise of no violence. She couldn't decide what to think about Demos--did he deserve whatever he got? Was it really his fault? If Dianna forgave him, would he be able to come back?

Dianna sighed and laid back in her bed. It hadn't been very long, but she almost felt ready to go back to her army. She wanted to see someone--anyone. As she was thinking this for the millionth time, she saw her sister Darci walk through the door.

Darci walked into the infirmary nervously and cautiously. She spotted Dianna sitting up in a bed at the far wall and went straight over. She tried to lose her concerned expression as she talked with Dianna. "Hey, how ya doing kid?" She asked, trying to muster up a smile. "Some new transfer told me you'd gotten beat pretty bad... doesn't look that bad, you wimp," she said, almost cringing at all the blood-soaked bandages around. She then put on a more serious tone and looked around. She whispered, "Who did this to you?"

Dianna smiled as her sister entered and tried to joke with her. That's Darci... I guess she really can NEVER be serious, she thought. However, Darci assumed a very serious tone as she had asked,
quote:
"Who did this to you?"
Dianna went pale. She had to decide to tell the truth or to lie, and she had to do it now. Though Darci wasn't a serious person, Dianna knew she would take a vengeance on Manticore if Dianna told the truth. Especially Demos was still in danger, if he was still around. She thought of the consequences of both answers, weighing them over and over again in her head. When Darci began to become impatient with her, Dianna sighed and opened her mouth to answer.

"Well... I was in the barracks, like you told me to be. I was just sitting there, on the bottom bunk, when the top one collapsed onto me. I guess it was because of us jumping on it and everything. Anyway, it hurt so bad, I could barely breathe. Then it was only Tali there, and she's so little--she couldn't pull it off of me. She started screaming for help in the hallways, and eventually some boys came in and pulled it off me, after the mattress and bars and springs scraped me up real bad. Then this transfer walks in, and sees me all scratched up and unconscious--because I couldn't breathe under there-- and she thinks the boys beat me up." She took a deep breath. "Really--it wasn't anyone's fault. I promise." She felt terrible lying to her own sister--she'd probably tell her the truth someday... but the nurses were around listening, and she knew that she didn't want to incriminate Demos.

Darci gasped, shocked. She completely believed Dianna's story. "Wow! You had me worried that some Manticores came and sought revenge or something." She was noticeably more relaxed. She looked to the door and then tensed up. An I.F. official, in uniform and everything, had just entered the room and was heading for them. Oh no--they're coming for me because I overthrew the commander. What are they gonna do to me?? She looked to her sister. "Listen, I better go back to the barracks. Get better, kid." She then ruffled Dianna's hair, jumped up from where she was sitting, and ran past the I.F. official and out of the room.

Colonel Berlin walked into the infirmary and towered over the many children present. He set his sites to a bed on the far wall, where one girl was lying down and a similar-looking girl was sitting by the bed. However, as soon as the sitting girl saw him, she leapt up and ran past him out the door. Still got it... He thought to himself. He then looked at a piece of paper in his hand, walked over to the bed, and sat down where the other girl had been.

"Are you Dianna Stratus?" He asked authoritatively, still looking at the piece of paper and not looking up. After all, he was there to resolve the situation--not to make friends with students.

"Yes," she said quietly, her voice trembling in fear.

"Hello, Dianna. I've heard that you came here because of violent acts against you by another member of Battle School-- does the name Nicolas Demos sound familiar to you?" He asked, still looking at the paper.

Dianna panicked. What does he know? Will he see through my lie? "Yes... isn't he in Manticore?" She asked nervously.

"Yes, he was. A toon leader, I believe. Anyway, is he responsible for the violent acts against you that have brought you to the infirmary?" The strong, old colonel asked without an ounce of concern in his voice.

"N-No... no one hurt me. He... umm..." She stuttered. "H-he was one of the boys who helped me out from under the mattress." She said. She then went through the whole story that she had just told Darci.

Colonel Berlin finally looked up from his paper and eyed the girl suspiciously, raising an eyebrow. "All of these injuries-- are from a mattress?" He asked slowly.

She nodded and looked to the ground.

The old colonel sighed and wrote some notes on his paper. "Whatever you say-- I guess we'll allow the kid to come back then," he said while making notes.

"Come back? Where is he? I'd been meaning to thank him-- because he's the one that carried me here, to the infirmary and everything." Dianna asked now with more assurance in her voice, after the colonel believed her lie.

The Colonel looked up. "Well, he had some sort of panic attack or something-- we sent him to a hospital on earth because we feared a heart failure. If he had been the one responsible for your injuries, he would have been officially 'iced'--however, now that you say that no one is guilty, I guess he will come back as soon as he is well again." Colonel Berlin then sat up and held out his hand for Dianna to shake. "Nice meeting you--and thank you for your information."

Dianna shook his hand nervously and watched him go. Though she didn't hear it, the Colonel said to himself as he left, "Does she think I'm that dumb? Oh well. If she wants to lie to me and get this kid back, I don't really care-- if he goes and hurts her again, it's no skin off my back."

(OOC - sorry! I didn't see your post, it was hidden!)

Teteli was startled by this. Motz had always had such self-control - and he was crying! "It's ok, it's ok..." she murmered, holding onto his hand. "Whatever you did, Zuni won't stay mad, you know her. And you're gonna be fine..." He started coughing violently, uncontrollably. She didn't want to see him get up and try to walk, but it was obvious that being inside the infirmary was upsetting him. Maybe if they just went out to the hall, and he could sit down... "Shh, shh... ok, yeah, let's get out of here. We'll just go out, into the hall where it's quiet, you can tell me everything, it'll all be ok..." She helped him up, out of the infirmary.

(OOC - the Hallways, then?)

Roman walked into the infirmary with Avon and immediately dropped her hand. He searched the room for Dianna's face and saw her sitting calmly at a bed on the opposite wall. He looked to Avon. "Stay here until I signal you," he whispered. Roman then walked over to Dianna's bunk and began to talk with her.

"Hey... it's me, Roman. How have you been?" He asked.

"I've been alright. I'm getting better really fast. I think I'll be let out really soon, actually. Probably in another day or two," Dianna said weakly.

"Mind if someone else comes to visit you?" He asked with a soft smile.

Dianna's face brightened. Demos! Demos is here! She thought and looked around the room. She could not see him. "Sure..." she said disappointedly.

Roman then looked at Avon and waved her over to the bed.

Avon stepped from behind the curtains of one of the cots. Dianna was a soft-featured, blue-eyed thing about her same age. She glanced from Avon to Roman confusedly, seeming to ask if there was something she had missed. She didn't know this girl with the strange mark on her brow, after all.

Avon felt it unnecessary to waste time with pleasantries. She sat on the edge of Dianna's cot, gazing full into her eyes. "Dianna. Who put you in here?" Her voice was soft.

Dianna glanced at Roman, then to the girl again. She was contemplating something. She then looked around to make sure that no nurses were nearby. "Do you want the truth... or what I told the I.F. officer who was just in here?" She asked in almost a whisper.

Roman looked at Dianna in shock. "You... you lied? What did you say?" He asked bewilderedly. Did she lie to get Demos in more trouble? He was disgusted--this seemed totally unlike what he thought Dianna was, but then it occurred to him that she could have lied to save Demos.

Dianna looked to the strange girl, then to Roman, and back to the girl. "After Lion Army came in and invaded a Manticore practice and beat Manticore, I saw one of the boys look at my sister, Darci, with a vicious eye. I was scared for her; I know from experience that Darci can make people mad, even drive them to violence. So I went to follow Manticore and I promised them they could get revenge on Lion as long as they didn't hurt anyone." She glared at Roman and he looked down shamefully. "They decided to vandalize our barracks... except when they came, a new transfer came in during the vandalism and this boy Demos got very upset. He thought I had set it up. I said a few things that angered him, and before I knew it he was killing me. I was knocked out pretty early on, thankfully... and I woke up here." She looked down at her bed, away from the two faces. "And I found out that Demos was gone... he was sent back to earth."

She looked around and then back to Roman. "An I.F. officer came and talked to me about disciplinary action for Demos. I denied that Demos hurt me... I made up a whole story about a bed collapsing on me and Demos coming to the rescue. He believed it, and they're going to bring Demos back to Battle School as soon as he fully recuperates," she said with a bright smile. "So he should be back soon!" She said cheerfully.

Her face then went stricken and her voice trembled as she said to Roman, "You don't think he'll hurt me again... do you?"

To an extent, Avon had already known some of the things she'd just heard. Even from the confines of her old army, she had felt those waves emanating back and forth between members of Lion and Manticore. Anger, revenge, things that tinged red in her vision whenever she saw the people who were involved. Yet despite the burn they caused in her senses, Avon had ignored them. Some times gave no permission for her to offer to help; neither army was her business to meddle with. Until now. Gazing at Dianna, Avon's own lips trembled. She had thought that the girl was feigning happiness at the thought Demos's return, but a second look proved her wrong. Still, how could she want that boy back?

"When will Demos come?" Avon glanced from Dianna to Roman, brushing her hair from the moon on her forehead. "I think our boy needs to meet me..."

Roman chose to answer Avon's question first. "Well... I've talked to some people in my army... we think in another week or two." He then turned to Dianna and assumed a very serious face and tone. "I promise you... Demos will not touch you. I know Demos, I've known him for a long time... I know he felt bad enough after hurting you the first time; he would never, ever do it again."

Dianna sighed and looked to her bedsheets, nervously clasping her hands together. "Okay... I... I don't know why I'm nervous. I knew he wouldn't hurt me again. For some reason, it feels like I know Demos; I can feel what he feels, I think how he thinks. I knew he was going to hurt me if I said what I said, but I said it anyway... thinking that somehow it could bring us closer together." She shook her head. "That sounds stupid, doesn't it? I risked my life for someone I in reality barely knew." However, she looked up and looked past Roman to the girl with him. For some reason, she felt a connection with her too. "Do you understand what I'm saying?" She asked pleadingly.

Avalon almost blushed. She understood somewhat too well what Dianna was saying. If only it could be just one person for her, the way it was for this girl, instead of every person she'd ever met in her life. She moved to hold the girl's hand, then remembered herself and pulled back. "You said what you did because it hurts you to feel him and yet be apart from him." She touched the moon on her brow, the way Torn would trace his scars when his emotions grew to be too much. "Believe me, if you hadn't lied for him, you would be wishing that this was your deathbed. You did what you had to do."

She looked at Roman, wondering if he understood anything of what they were talking about. "And I suppose you were too late to save her." Before his face could change to the defensive, she went on, "Just because you think you know Demos so well, you think you could've read his mind and known that he was going to hurt Dianna?" She shook her head, standing up. "It wasn't your fault. You don't need the hurt. And it wasn't yours, either." She touched Dianna's hair. "One week, maybe two. You'll have him back. But you need to promise me that before you even talk to him, you'll let him see me." As if one Torn in this place wasn't enough.

Dianna shrugged. "Sure..." she said slowly at the girl's words. She wasn't sure, though--part of her still wanted to see Demos first, to make sure she had made the right choice. "I'll let you know," she said quietly, then yawned (naturally). "I'm tired... thanks for visiting me, but I better get some rest." She yawned again and laid back on her bed. "Bye."

Roman took Avon's hand again and began to walk out. "Well... now you have your answers," he told her with tears in his eyes and led her back to the barracks.

He was still hurting. Avon followed Roman without resistance, fighting to stop his tears from flowing out her own eyes. Things like pain take more than this for healing... she had learned that fact long ago, but that didn't make it easier on anyone who felt it. Unable to bear it anymore, Avon suddenly tugged back on her hand when they were a few steps away from the barracks. She pulled Roman around to face her and reached up to sweep the tears away from his face. "I have the answers for helping Dianna. Nothing in that assures me that I'm helping you. Tell me why you're hurting so badly for her." She searched his eyes, desperate to find proof of something that she suspected was laying there the very first moment she saw him. "If not, tell me this. When Demos comes back, when Dianna sees him and she's happy again, would the hurt still be there for you?"

Roman wheeled around so that she couldn't see his face. It made him nervous how she was always analyzing him, always looking at him for answers but never just asking him. Until now. He looked up and down the wall, and finally, in answer to her question, he said, "Yes." He then walked into the barracks.

Yuma skipped over to Dianna suppressing an evil laugh, well not really suppressing it, projecting it.

"Weeeeeeeeeeeeell. I'm just so happy you're little 'social hour' is over, because it ended, sadly, right on time. Visiting hours are over," he said pulling at some overhead machines, "Ah it must be wonderful to have friends." He said clapping his hands together, feigning delight, "They visit you and talk you to death until you suddenly find the I.V. in you arm extremely comforting, for the simple fact that it has the potential to put you to sleep, or take you out of your misery, depending on just how much you want to shut them up. I feel sorry for you, having to listen to those kids yap on and on about their problems, prom dates, and pit-stains." He didn't seem sorry at all, as he pulled her uniform from the bedside where it was hanging and replaced it with a new lagoon colored patient outfit.

For some reason she had to know his little soliloquy was not quite over and she'd have to be his audience a little longer as he checked her stats, scribbling furiously the whole time, turned some knobs and changed her sheets, quite systematically. As he put the little uniform down he said, "You know why they give you little paper outfits, and sit you on little paper mattresses, with little paper curtains all around, in a little paper room everytime you go to the hospital?" The question was not meant to be answered, "Give up?" He said before she could respond, "It's because it's dehumanizing and makes you feel like a bug under a magnificence glass, in the sun." He snickered, delighted, "And if you ever wonder just what sick, sad, evil, criminal-mind came up with this intricate, origami gown ensemble, and this insane medical ideal of paper domination; you can thank a great ancestor of mine somewhere. It's sad I can't take personal credit for such an evil creation, but I'm working on it, the patent's pending."

Yuma got up from the edge of her bed and walked to the middle of his terminal. It was getting to be night time and the lights were dimming a bit. The short man took in a deep breath and picked up a bullhorn, ironically made of paper, and belted out, "Okay my grazing little cows! The ho-down is over! All of you need to mosey on over to greener pastures because VISITING HOURS ARE OVER. I'm Muslim but I will make an exception! Little annoying kids aren't really red meat, they're actually kind of brown and ozzy!" Some one moved to protest, "Don't tempt me little boy I have a scalple!" The kid quickly moved for the door, abandoning his girlfriend to save his own life. "I do eat little people frequently!" The scalple's flashing, and the prospect of being a victim of cannablism had an affect on stragglers, "Let's move it Bessie! Come one Bertha! Break it up Farmer Brown!" He said 'herding' his cows out quite forcefully.

Dianna smiled at the nurse at first, glad to see someone so cheerful in the infirmary. However, after that nurse just didn't stop, the smile became more artificial as she sank back into her paper mattress and waited for it all to be over. She was glad that Roman, Avon, and Darci had already left--it could have been really embarrassing if they were here while this nurse went on his escapade. She shrugged, laid back further, closed her eyes, and began to drift off to sleep.
