Re: security question
Dear Administrator, I was wondering if you run I.P. traces to make sure that people are not posting under different usernames from the same source. As I am sure you are aware, readers of Card are quite familiar with the persuasive power of posting and responding under multiple personas. I would hate to have such a thing running rampant on Hatrack. I cannot be the only person to think of this which means either: steps have already been taken to prevent it, or it is, in fact, running rampant. In either case the suggestion couldn't hurt.

Of course it's already happening, silly. Moose does it himself.

Yeah -- pretty much everyone but Tom does it. I suspected he might be that "Christy" character for a while, but the writing styles are too dissimilar. Probably someone using his wi-fi and he's just unaware -- he's so non-tech-savvy.

who has time to have multiple online personalities?? What purpose does that serve? I'm Gryph, always have been, and have no plans for being anyone else...(unless my username is taken, which usu isn't a problem)
how bizarre...

The thing is, Ramdac, that majority doesn't rule here. It's also not really a debate forum so much as a discussion forum. In this, it sorta functions differently than OSC's Ornery American forum (regardless of whether or not that's how Ornery was intended, I believe that's what it now is), and thus operates under different rules and different assumptions.
Yes, I'm quite aware that people can post under multiple screennames. Smarter ones can falsify their source IP addresses, so even identifying those doesn't always help.
We've had some instances in the past where someone will create additional screennames to provide public support to an unpopular viewpoint -- one is truly legendary. Invariably either the perpetrator is revealed (by himself or others), or it becomes a non-issue because people stop listening to the names parroting one another's comments.

Hi. I just want to mention that sometimes there are legit reasons for having multiple names from one source. My son and I are big OSC fans and we just registered for the forum. We registered separately using the same ip and email address.

Isn't this the same thing Peter was doing with Locke and Demosthenes in the Ender books?

He actually did it again in SOTG with Lincoln and Martel.
