Yay! I was so happy to see Thane make the list of ReBooks in OSC's latest column, and just wanted to let him know that he and his mother aren't the only ones. Although I add the third in the series, too (Ever After), since it's my favorite.

I'm not sure what I'd think of these novels if I read them for the first time as an adult. The 1940s cultural assumptions about women, African-Americans, and Germans certainly jump out at me now. But they were loaned to me when I was in the hospital for a long time as a 13-year-old, and I remember them fondly and love re-reading most of the series every few years. In fact, I re-read several of them just this past summer.

If you have access to a 10-15 year old who loves historical fiction, I'd definitely recommend these novels. [Smile]
