Just read his column about Airbender. It occurred to me how many of his reviews and things he's felt he's had to put a big fat disclaimer on, which usually goes like this:
"Normally, being smart and urbane, not to mention handsome, I would never lower myself to indulge in something so silly, BUUUUUUUT someone ASKED me to, and so because I'm so generous and kind to everyone, I decided to watch it. Of course I didn't expect much because I have such discerning taste, but imagine my surprise when I liked it! And for reasons which I'll try to make sound very serious."
honestly, I get a kick out of it every time he does this. You know, Mr. Card, that plenty of adults do actually like this sort of thing unreservedly, and in fact, a whole long list of adults with intellects and educations have also approved, long before you got there. Stop sounding like you're ashamed to be seen in the same room with them. If you liked it, then you liked it. You don't have to add something which ultimately boils down to, "This is cool but I'm totally not a nerd, guys!"
You are most famous for writing a novel about Space Boy. Embrace it.

I'll admit that it's less plain in this article, but it really does seem to pop up regularly, to some greater or lesser degree.
Has no one else never noticed he does this?

I know what you're referring to but it normally reads to me more like he's trying to relate to his audience (which is a local paper, not sci-fi fans) more than excuse himself.

I have to say, I have never seen OSC refer to himself as handsome. I mostly see him as being self-depricating about his appearance, especially his weight issues.
As far as the nerd thing goes, I specifically remembering him saying, I think in Maps in a Mirror, "Some people are born nerds, some choose nerdhood, some have nerdiness thrust upon them. I chose."

That reference to 12th Night would be mangled if the verb was "chose" rather than "achieved," but it's still pretty funny.
