For those of you on the West coast, tonight's "Futurama" is a repeat of the finest 30 minutes of cartoon I've yet seen on FOX, and, yes, I'm including the one where Lisa makes new friends at the beach. 7pm on FOX. Be there.

That's tragic. My parents finally decided (after I'd moved out, of course) that it was okay for us to watch the Simpsons. I think there's something a little backwards about allowing sitcoms but not allowing the Simpsons.

Yes. Heaven forbid FOX run something that actually has warmth and maturity on top of excellent humor...
The episode that's running tonight, which I can't watch because of football, is absolutely brilliant. Not the most hilarious of the Futurama episodes, but it's still pretty darn funny, and the storyline with the dog brought me to tears.
I'm so impressed with this show's ability to flesh out these characters and actually make me care what happens to them, and keep me laughing throughout. It's something the Simpsons obviously doesn't give a crap about anymore.

I've always thought that prohibiting the Simpsons was silly, even back in its controversial days. Especially back then, actually... now that I'm watching the first and second seasons, I'm realizing that the Simpson family, while crazy on the surface, was way more loving and close back then. They became more seriously dysfunctional after silly parents decided they were evil and banned them.

Futurama is great. For a birthday present, my brother burned all the episodes onto CD for me. I have them here in Korea with me, but no computer to watch them on. Poop.
I agree that the Simpsons has (have?) gone way downhill. At their peak, there were many moments of pure genius.

just out of curiosity, which episode was it? I've only seen a couple of them, but the one that sticks out is when Fry goes back in time and the people responsible for sending him back were steven hawkins, that computer that plays chess, the creator of D&D and some other people. I'll never forget when the D&D guy gives Fry his +4 mace.

In the one that was on last night, Fry and the group visit the "Museum of the Stupid Ages", where they just excavated the pizzeria Fry used to work at. While there, he finds his fossilized dog, which Farnsworth thinks he can bring back to life.

Stupid football. Here I was all psyced up to watch Futurama, I turn on the tube, and there was football.
I felt let down, so I had to pop out the episodes I have on CD and watch the one where Bender becomes god. Talk about a hillarious episode! "God needs booze!"
Anyone see Simpsons last night? For that matter the new episodes from the last few weeks? Is it just me, or is Simpsons trying way to hard now?

What's kind of sad is that, in one way, the latest Simpsons -- which I watched only because it was on just before "King of the Hill" -- was clearly showing signs of TRYING to be as moving, funny, and inspirational as the earlier episodes. It jettisoned a lot of the tawdry stuff that, in later seasons, prevented me from enjoying many shows -- but, sadly, didn't quite manage to be either moving OR funny enough. I give it points for at least trying this week -- but then take away half those points for trying too hard.

I don't mind so much that The Simpsons is no longer very consistent for characterization -- it's hard to keep a show going for, what, 13 years and still be able to do meaningful things with the characters... What bothers me more is that the humor is more erratic. Older shows usually had more meaningful humor, using humor to make points. But some of the recent shows are often a collection of jokes... like the show where Ned's wife Maude died, it was just a collection of jokes about death, with little point to it... or the episode about medical marijuana, that was just a bunch of pot jokes...

While I agree that The Simpsons has long been enduring a painful decline in quality, there are recent episodes that are quite funny. The Mr.X episode is a good example.

I got the Season 1 collection for Christmas. I'm looking forward to getting the rest of 'em, too. Staying up till 11:30 is tough for me to do unless I'm in bed and can just collapse when I need to. I also recently watched the entirity of the Season 2 collection with some friends over New Years. I like it better than the Simpsons, personally. I wish I'd had a clue when it was actually on the air.

I have to share my favorite episode, and I thought it was heart warming.
When Fry found out his brother had taken his lucky clover after he was frozen(I think it had five leaves, maybe more). The ending was really heart-wrenching. Loved it.
