Here's a fun little game I'm borrowing from my favorite local radio station, a game called My Three Songs. Here's how it works:

I list three songs (it would be more fun if I could play them, but it'll work this way) that have something in common. It could be anything - titles, artists, album cover art, something in the music, somthing in the lyrics, or a combination of the above. Whoever is the first to guess the common thread, and is verified by the asker, wins and gets to ask the next round. If it goes too long, it is the asker's prerogative to give hints. Here are the first three to start it off:

Nirvana, Come As You Are
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Higher Ground
Wild Cherry, Play That Funky Music

Best of luck!

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Phew. I am stumped. Is it something to do with the color red? It would only work if there is something red about Nirvana. Oh, weel, it's a shot. Do you get to do another one if no one gets this within a certain amount of time?

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I don't think there's anything red about Come as You Are, unless it's in the music video...

This one's got me stumped too.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

I was just going with the titles, and only two out of three of them. Basically, I am stumped.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I thought it was the lyric "funky" but that word isn't in the Nirvana song.
I want a hint. This is making me nuts!

I know.

All Three Songs include arrangements for guitar, percussion, bass, and vocals....

Posted by T. Analog Kid (Member # 381) on :

All three songs are well known for their bass parts?

Posted by Alucard... (Member # 4924) on :

2 of the 3 bands had a member that had a heroin problem...

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

It must be something band-related, because "Higher Ground" is a Stevie Wonder song.

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

I know! They're all white guys trying to be funky.

Posted by Alucard... (Member # 4924) on :

After careful review of the lyrics I found nothing. But I did find a link between them after much thought:

That each of the songs' album covers have some form of nudity:

Nirvana: a nude baby swimming under water
Chili Peppers: a topless woman with the band in her arms
Wild Cherry: some scantily clad woman? (a guess: the original album cover is hard find, I only found text describing it)

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Foods? I could go for a big plate of Nirvana and ketchup right now.

edit: After checking this out I discovered that there is a Nirvana brand name of chocolates.

Two of them are hymn names. I can't see us singing "Play That Funky Music" in church though.

All three song titles utilize the letter "E"!

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

And the award goes to...

TAK, our friendly neighborhood bass player.

Each song starts out with a bass solo.

Take it away!

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Whoo-hoo!Great game.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

Damn you! I even own all three of those songs, and I couldn't put them together. I'll get you yet.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Wait a minute. Come as You Are starts with a bass solo?

*reminds self to listen to it tomorrow at work to verify this*

Posted by Zotto! (Member # 4689) on :

Wait, "Come As You Are" starts with a bass solo? I thought he was just using a clean tone or just not strumming as many strings...*needs to go listen to "Nevermind" again.*

Edit: *feels quite dumb for not scrolling quite far enough to read Twink's post* [Embarrassed] [Razz]

Pretty sure it's bass, folks.

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

Hey, I was right too!

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Well, come on, bring on the next round!

Posted by solo (Member # 3148) on :

Nope, it's just a clean tone on the 6-string.

Posted by Alucard... (Member # 4924) on :

I also agree that Come As You Are starts with Grandmaster Kurt on his electric, with no distortion.

Better yet, I am also questioning whether "Funky Music" is also a bass solo at the beginning, because the bass kicks in after 4 bars and a "Hey Hey" followed by a drum lick...

(I shamelessly know this because I listen to this in the car as a tribute to the movie Evolution.)

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

OK, fine, but I will stand by Annie, and pretend that she meant "bass, or bass string."

Posted by T. Analog Kid (Member # 381) on :

Well, there are a few versions of that song floating around... but the Bass Pod has a sound specifically designed to emulate the sound of the beginning of "Come As You Are".

My band worked it up as a cover once and we started with bass...

just in defense of Annie.

Since no one has come up with 3 other songs, here's an easy one:

"Gallow's Pole", Led Zepplin
"Waitress", Tori Amos
"Pull Me Under", Dream Theater

What is: songs that are in 5/4 time?

Posted by T. Analog Kid (Member # 381) on :

I think Gallows Pole is in Cut Time and Waitress is 4/4. Pull Me Under probably has alot of 7 and might have some 5... but no... it's a little more simple than that.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Having listened to Come as You Are at work today, I'm certain that the opening is guitar... for the very simple reason that when the bass actually comes in, the guitar keeps on playing that same riff with that same effect.

They're all about dying/killing? [Dont Know]

Ok, here are my three songs.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pink Floyd.
Learning to Fly, Pink Floyd.
Us and Them, Pink Floyd.

No, it's not that they're all PF songs... good try though! [Razz]

And, Alucard, I don't get your point... [Dont Know]

Alucard, I think it's the fact that if you play those songs backwards you get a certain sound or effect.

They're all on "Delicate Sound of Thunder" and they're all about Sid Barret.

Oooh have another go, have another go! [Razz]

Note: the first half of your first answer was correct (see PSI's answer previous page).

Posted by Alucard... (Member # 4924) on :

TTT Crazy Diamond was originally on the "Wish You Were Here" album released in 1975. That was the point of the link, as well as to be a pain in the rump in an impish way...

Emperor P,

You are correct! The songs all contain "backwards masking", meaning, when played backwards, there are hidden phrases that are then heard.

Another One Bites the Dust played backwards says "It's fun to smoke marijuana".

Stairway to Heaven played backwards has a few phrases including "There's power in Satan".

The Wall played backwards says "Congratulations! You found the secret message".

Other artists such as The Beatles dabbled in it as well, including current artists like Marilyn Manson. I just couldn't resist considering my name is backwards. Also worth mentioning, I have actually done the first two, but have not actually done the Pink Floyd one...

And heck, I have NO CLUE as to whose turn it is. Can it be a Round Table Discussion?

They are all on "Delicate Sound of Thunder," an album dedicated to Sid Barrett who left the band due to mental illness.

Sheesh. What do you want from me?!

Posted by tonguetied&twisted (Member # 5159) on :

It is still my turn.

Oh, I get you now, I (for some unknown reason) thought that when you said SOYCD wasn't originally on DSOT, that you meant DSOT was originally released without SOYCD on it!! [Dont Know]

Yes, I am an idiot. [Razz]
But I knew SOYCD was originally released on WYWH. *sigh*

I thought you guys were never gonna get it! Yes, that is correct, they were all on both DSOT and Echoes (the greatest hits album).

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Alucard - I'll be Michael Flately, of course.

tt&t - You deliberately had us on that Sid Barrett track. ::narrows eyes::

This is more of a "what's the connection":

Smooth - Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana
Melt With You - Modern English
Muffin Man - Frank Zappa

This is difficult, so I'll just give you a hint and say it has nothing to do with lyrics and you really need to know nothing about music. [Smile]

No.

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

OK, here's my three:

My Beloved Wife - Natalie Merchant
Levi Stubb's Tears - Billy Bragg
Long Ride Home - Patty Griffin

I'm not a good judge of how difficult it will be. You're all smart, you can probably figure it out pretty quick.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Are you using country songs?

I think country songs should be disqualified since people with taste won't have any frame of reference.

[Razz]

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

No fear. None of those are country.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Answer to qsysue (whose rightful turn it is):

They're all about a wife dying?

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

No, Billy Bragg's song is about a woman living alone after her abusive husband tried to stab her.

It does sound kinda country with that description!

And it does have something to do with the lyrics.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

They're all about horribly broken marriages?

Posted by qsysue (Member # 5229) on :

No, "My Beloved Wife" is about an elderly man who wants to kill himself when his wife dies because he doesn't want to live without her.

This may be too hard. I don't know if I'll be around to check the thread over the weekend so if someone else wants to post three songs, feel free.

I'm resurrecting this thread to get your brains kicked back into gear for the school year.

This one might take some research. But you can do it!

Brown Sugar - the Rolling Stones

Femme Fatale - the Velvet Underground

Angel Baby - John Lennon

oooh.... tough. Get to work!

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Second-page and no attempts??!?

Come on kids, you can do it!

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

I just thought of a good one today, so I'm going to resurrect this thread. It's a little obscure, but I'm sure there are at least a few people on here that can get it. Here you go:

Imagine by John Lennon
Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens
Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles

I have faith in you. I'll give you hints or tell you if you get warm.

Good luck. [Big Grin]

I know, I know. Sorry. I was hoping no one would require the specific song, but the info I needed to dig up a 3rd song with backwards masking was from the internet, and the site did not specify which song it was. Sorry!

Clear Channel. Donl't get me started. They just got a ridiculous patent for taping live performances.

And Alucard, how in heck did you figure that out?

Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens
Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles" into Google, and the site's the first hit. [Razz]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Wow. It's a good thing Clear Channel banned "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Those are some questionable lyrics. [Roll Eyes]

By the way, the answer to my unanswered puzzle was this: they all featured Andy Warhol art on the album cover.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

Okay, that was a good enough guess. I don't see anyone on the right track, so I'll spill the beans. If you want to keep guessing, don't read ahead.

Morning has Broken featured piano playing by an undiscovered Rick Wakeman.

Imagine featured drumming by a likewise undiscovered Alan White.

Video Killed the Radio Star was performed by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes.

All of these people would go on to become members of that pillar of prog-rock and perpetual cheesefest, the band that will not die, Yes.

There's your connection. I'm surprised that, with all the prog fans we've got up in here, no one knew that. Good guesses anyway, though.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

Ooh, ooh, I just discovered a new one, and it's really cool. So I'm going to have to resurrect this thread.

Steely Dan: My Old School
Soft Machine: Moon in June
DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid: Galactic Funk (Tau Ceti Mix)

First person to get this is my hero. Good luck.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

By the way, feel free to use google all you want. Although the solution makes more sense than my last one, google isn't very well suited to the problem, so if you can find it there I'll still be very impressed.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

So, you need a hint?

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

I'm almost starting to give up hope that you'll figure this one out. So if you're still frantically working on the solution, don't read any further:

Steely Dan, Soft Machine, and That Subliminal Kid are all names inspired by the work of William S. Burroughs.

Who's next?
