Don't think I've seen a thread on this (or at least not for a while), so: What are folks' favorite magazines?

My current faves:

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Maxim is pretty funny, and the beautiful women aren't so bad either.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

I don't subscribe to anything but Shonen Jump nowadays. (SHONEN JUMP, WHY WON'T YOU COME!!?!? ;_;)

But I still love Game Informer and Reader's Digest.

I don't subscibe to any magazines (poor college student that I am), but if I did the only one I can think of would be:

Paste

Pretty much everything else is covered at Ars Technica and Arts & Letters Daily.

The Hatracker

Hobbes [Smile]

I subscribe to Newsweek, The Progressive, and my school's magazine, but I also frequently read The Beloit Fiction Journal, Time, and whatever else catches my eye at the supermarket.

Wild Animal Baby (by National Wildlife Federation; some of you may remember Ranger Rick. This is a preschool version.)

Organic Style - a girl mag but with reasonable organic and eco-friendly alternatives

Real Simple - house type, but not Martha Stewart

The Herb Companion

Asimov's Science Fiction and Fantasy
Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction
Both of the above have had some really good stories lately!

::sigh::

I have a pitifully small magazine collection. I personally get Horse and Rider and Horse Illustrated. I'd like to have Equus, too, for a really good overview of the industry, but I keep forgetting aobut it. [Wall Bash]

I usually read National Geographic and Discover all of the way through every month when I'm home.

I have nothing that helps me write, either by reading what's new, or actual articles on writing. Maybe once I'm in one place for more than nine months at a time, I'll get a few.

Ni!

Discover. I enjoy keeping up with science news, and it's a lot easier to read than Science. Maybe when I get my degree I'll understand some of the papers.

Posted by ak (Member # 90) on :

Scientific American and Sky and Telescope.

I don't currently read any magazines on a regular basis. This is because I can't afford to buy them and my local library doesn't subscribe to anything good anymore.

I really miss Omni, though.

My wife and I get:

National Geographic

Dressage Today
Writer's Digest
Practical Horsemen

Favorites?
Analog, Issac Asimov, Scientific American, and some long-dead periodicals....

Do comics count?

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Reader's Digest, Game Informer, Outdoors, Backpacker and Runner's World.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

I read National Geographic, but only when the particular magazine is more than ten years old. Completely different perspective on the world [Smile]

I actually read my old National Geographics.

Posted by Avadaru (Member # 3026) on :

Magazines I receive:

National Geographic
Vanity Fair
the American Kennel Club Gazette
Field and Stream
Cooking Lite [Big Grin]

Uh... I feel vaguely stupid for mine, but hey - I love them anyway:

Entertainment Weekly
Sports Illustrated

And that's really it. I used to love Star Wars Insider, but due to my spoiler-free-til-Episode-Three policy, that one went away [Smile]

Popular Science
Scientific American
Popular Mechanics
& any other cool science magazines.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Sojourners
Eating Well
Homiletics
Lectionary Homiletics

I read Newsweek at the allergist’s while waiting for my shots.

My Grandma's been paying for my Reader's Digest subscription for a few years now. I also enjoy Bead and Button because I'm into jewlery-making.

Well, I can't say I LOVE all of these, but these are some of the magazines I get. A few of these are free.

Analog
Asimov's Science Fiction

The Journal of the American Medical Association
The New England Journal of Medicine
American Family Physician
The Female Patient
Consultant
Cortlandt Forum

I get some other magazines too that aren't worth naming.

Sport Compact Car
Import Drifting

That is all.

My favorites (of the ones I currently receive):
Cicada
Backpacker

If you're at all interested in current events or international relations, I would highly recommend The Economist. It's a British newsmagazine like Newsweek or U.S. News & World Report except that it's better than those two in almost every way. The commentary is sharp and often witty, and it has very penetrating analysis.

I hate economics, but the magazine (or newspaper, as it calls itself) is only slighly about business issues. It addresses all sorts of current events, from politics to science to literature.

It's also the only magazine (or any medium, really) that I've ever seen the CIA advertise in.

I don't have time for magazines . . .

Carrie, get ready to feel much better about yourself. I only subscribe to 2 magazines:

I enjoy reading many, many more:

I don't subscribe to anything because shipping fees to Singapore are ridiculous. If not for this, I would certainly subscribe to:

The Hatracker
[Smile] I'm with you on that one, Hobbes!!!! Start the magazine, and I'll be the first to subscribe!

My dad gets this and I read it sometimes. It's a good overview of pretty much anything happening in the world at the time.

I have a subscription to Boy's Life from when I was a Scout, but it is sent to my parent's house (which is still my house when I am not in the dorm) and I have not read it in quite a while.

"Cuisine" is my new favorite.

I am not subscribed, but I love

"Family Fun"

An old favorite, which exists no longer, was

"The Kitchen Garden"(?)

Another old favorite, which I no longer get, is

"Chile Pepper Magazine"

I think Bob should do a personality analysis based on our magazine choices.

Lectionary Homiletics?
Permaculture Activist?
Dressage Today?
Bead and Button?

Dang. There's a magazine for *everything*. That's so cool. I once took a call at work from a reporter for the magazine for cafeteria/hospitality workers who work in dorms and at university hospitality centers.
----

I read New Yorker hand-me-downs from my grandparents and anything I can scavange on BART. Oh yeah, and whenever we visit this one couple, I always read their Cook's Illustrated. That's a great mag.

I suscribe to the following:
I read the following at the supermarket checkout line and at the bookstore:I've been debating about The New Yorker and Harper's Bazaar. The New Yorker lost out to the Atlantic Monthly because TNY has abysmal fiction and TAM's fiction is usually cool. They get Garrison Keiler! Harper's Bazaar I am debating, but I might be fooling myself that I will read both it and TAM. So, until that subscription runs out. *lifts milk glass* [Smile]

I can't afford any magazines, but our library has a decent selection. When I've been exceptionally good or need a break, I go sit there in the big leather chair and read all the magazines.

Piecework (if you love the needle arts and history...)
Backwoods Home
The Ensign and New Era (online at lds.org)
Reader's Digest
Architectural Digest
National Geographic
Arizona Highways

and OMNI...I have the entire year of 1979.

I dont actually read many magazines.. I'm in it for the visual. I like good photos and I like clever ads. This is why I subscribe to:

Print and
Rolling Stone and wish I had a subscription to
National Geographic

I love:

National Geographic
Smithsonian
New Scientist
Natural History
Archaeology
Funny Times
Asimov's
Analog

I have become disenchanted by:

Harper's (still get it, but don't intend to renew my subscription)
Discover (really went downhill when the guy who ran Sports Illustrated took over)
Atlantic Monthly (it's okay, but only rarely does it have a piece that really grabs my attention)

I remember fondly:

Hippocrates

Magazines whose back issues I'm almost invariably fascinated by:

Popular Science
National Geographic

You have to love my only magazine:

GAMES

It is where I discoverd D&D, Everquest, Ender's Game, and much more. All the while logic and word puzzles are there to confuse me.
