Remember that Blaster worm last week? There's another RPC error Microsoft's found that can be exploited in much the same way, and they've released a new patch for it.

Please do yourselves (and the world) a favor and head out to Windows Update to install the new patch -- #824146 -- before someone writes a virus to exploit it.

Better yet, set your system to "auto update" and it will let you know everytime there is a new critical patch. Then you don't have to wait until you get to the forum board to know there is something you need to do! [Razz]

I read about the update yesterday. Now begins the wait for our IT dept to not update our computers (only 8,000 out of 20,000 got the blaster update).

The really sad part is that we've got pc's in our fuel stations (that run the pumps) that are still infected.

I'd run windowsupdate on my machine (I'd have set up the autoupdate feature a long time ago, actually), but only about 20 people have actual rights to do so on their machines.

*gets ready for more phone calls on the virus*

Crap.

Out of curiosity, when you run Explorer, would it take your home page to a web site called "passthison" which ends up being porn? Cause if so... crap crap crap.

Double fudge brownie crap with sprinkles.

Dear, you mean that one I forgot to install on my laptop last night, right? Guess I'd better get on that. [Big Grin]

Hey, T, did you know they call those "jimmies" in NH?

On an unrelated note, does anyone else get a little worried every time there's a Microsoft JVM security update on Windows Update? I'm always a little paranoid that it's going to, i don't know, make it so that I can't run Java anymore and maybe wipe out all the files on my computer with a .java extension.

Yeah, is no one else paranoid that those patches are actually viruses in disgues because someone has finally figured out how to imitate that update program and fool you?

(I do do my updates despite the paranoia though)

update:

The windows are clean but rather streaky. One of them refuses to open. Two of them have been horribly disfigured by a bad caulking job.

It's a virus, Zal.

What a pain in my neck. . .

No, I think it's fungi. Or perhaps cobweb remnants.

BTW, the windows aren't pleased that I've mentioned them on Hatrack and are now demanding an appropriate sacrifice (I should have never mentioned the whole bierock thing -- thanks a lot Noemon). I've threatened them with brown paper bags and vinegar (they've become immune to Windex), but that quickly backfired and I now am getting this amazing glare on my computer screen.

I'm pretty sure that the updates are a way of taking up memory, so you run out and have to buy a new computer (or upgrade the memory, and seriously, how many people can do that without smoke coming out of their machine?) or they are loading on programming that slooowwwwsssss down the speed of your computer so you get unbelievably po'ed and go get a new one. Yep, it's all a vast conspiracy. Not that I believe in conspiracy theories or anything. [Wink]

(Kayla, that's just the update for your computer. Everyone else is getting updates that increase your performance.)

(Seriously, you are right though. My computer is slowing down as well!)
