Last night I was dancing with a friend of mine and I noticed he smelled like honey!
It was inexplicably attractive.

I enjoy smelling good, and usually wear essential oils rather than commercial perfumes. My current favorites are carnation, lavender, rosemary, and cucumber.

What do you think smells most attractive?

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

If I can tell that a guy made an effort to smell good...and it's a pleasant amount [Wink] , it's attractive. I've never smelled a food smell on a guy before though...that's cool!

I think people genreally smell good. They all have their own unique smells, and they're all good.

I like it when guys smell faintly of aftershave or fabric softener. Fortunately, a lot of guys smell like that, so I'm in luck. [Big Grin]

Pine car freshener.

OK, call me a weirdo, go ahead, but the smell kind of turns me on. Why, you ask, worriedly? Because when I first met my husband, long ago(almost 20 years now!!!) he had it in his big-ass Oldsmobile 98.

Also, my aunt and one grandmother smell great, and my dad smells wonderful, especially when it is cold outside. I remember hugging him in winter, and it was this fresh, clean, AIR kind of smell he had. No cologne, just him, combined with Adirondack air.

Cool question, which is now making me think how much smell means to me.

Teres' hair has an earthy honeysuckle smell that comes from within. She doesn't believe it, since she never notices it herself, but some mornings when she gets up I'll roll over on her pillow and breathe in her essence.

I miss the "new baby" smell of my kids. Not that I want any more babies, but there was a just-baked smell that I've never experienced anywhere else.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Chris, newborn babyhead smell is heaven. I have been helping a friend out on Wednesday evenings, watching her three-month-old. I went to Open House for my kids, and I just kept smelling myself. I hadn't had the scent of NBBH in ages, and I was loving it.

The girl I babysit smells great. Her mom burns strawberry oil, and the little girl has sort of african hair...it's a great combo.

I swear to you, my friend smells like a chicken fajita. Sitting next to him always made me hungry.

Some people taste really good, too. For serious. [Smile]

Yeah, I'm really into licking my neighbors. [Evil]

I can't get enough of my 5 mo. old's neck. It brings out all the mommyness in me. I also have an obsession with Obsession, but my hubby is sensitive to cologne and I can't go around sniffing strange men, sooo....

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

I mentioned this in conjunction with T's fajita friend before, but I had a friend who always ALWAYS smelled like curry.

But personally, I like it best when people smell clean, and not like food.

I love how my baby daughter smells just out of the bath. She doesn't have that new-baby smell anymore, but I love the lavendar shampoo we use. It makes me want to snuggle.

I bathe the dog in the same shampoo, which makes her almost as snuggle-able as the babe.

I'm a big fan of baby lotion.. perhaps it's a bit too domestic for catching the guys though...

Smell is a huge part of the sex appeal, to me. I rarely wear cologne, if only because I hang around so many ugly people, but I just love smelling an attractive woman sweep by me -- or better yet, sit across from me in a restaurant. Or better yet... But I shouldn't go there on a family forum.

Women, help me out. What IS that scent where a woman smells like she perpetually just got out of a shower? It drives me crazy. I'd love to make it a gift to a girlfriend, should I end up in any semblance of a relationship in the near future.

Um, shampoo? [Confused]

"But personally, I like it best when people smell clean, and not like food."

This is the quote I am still chuckling over.

Lalo, I know what you mean!!! I want to smell like that as well. It must be a type of shampoo that has a strong scent. Do you notice if it is usually women with long hair, or styled hair? maybe it is a type of hair spray, if the latter. Someone with long hair would hold more shampoo smell.

Come on, fresh-out-of-the-shower-smailling women, reveal thy secret! Share it with the rest of us.

Shampoos that keep smelling nice for a long time: White Rain, Pert Plus, Finesse (at least, these are the ones that smell good on me).

My favorite man-smell is a certain chemistry of sweat, the best way I can describe it is that it smells like olive hummus. Joel's scent is a pleasant relative of it, but the most recent time I've smelled exactly the scent I like was my teacher at a dance class I took over the summer -- distracting, made it harder to learn the dances.
In the costume shop where I worked the last three summers, there is a doublet that, no matter how many different people wear it, or how many times it's cleaned, it still has that magical smell. Sometimes when I'm having a bad day, [don't laugh at me now] I go into costume storage and sniff the armpits of that doublet.

I like people who smell of roses, of old books, of sawdust. I like people who smell of the theatre.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

*is quite amused picturing doublet-sniffing Martha*

I've found that the most peristent shampoo scent is Clairol Herbal Essence, though I don't much care for it. However, they now make Fruit Essence, which I'm a big fan of.

Posted by jexx (Member # 3450) on :

Now I am thinking about Chicken Fajitas and Olive Hummus. D*mn you, denizens of hatrack!

*chuckle*

My dad always smells like cigarette smoke and halls cough drops (and sometimes beer), so that combination always makes me feel safe and loved. It's probably one of the reasons that I smoke. I *know* it's the only reason I hit the Halls when I have a sore throat (I hate the way they taste, but I love the way they smell).

When my son is sick, he smells like chemicals (whether I give him medicine or not).

I think that one of the smells that Lalo may be talking about is Rave hairspray. It's a popular brand, and smells clean.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Thanks, gals. I am off to buy some Herbal Essence and Rave!

Dang, Lalo. If I were only younger, unmarried, and looking to snag a mate, I would just wash my hair in Herbal Essence, helmet it up with some Rave, and prance around as many men as I could see until someone started following me.

I have a uselessly poor nose. Subtle smells are unsmellable to me. As a result, only ciragette-smokers and people who wear three tons of purfume smell to me. Everyone else is pretty much bland. (although I remember my grandma does smell nice)

Now you've made me miss smelling people. [Frown]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

What I love is the way some people's perfumes/colognes blend with their own personal scents (pheromones, I suppose) just right and produce this AMAZING smell. My hubby wears Tuscany, and it does this. I've also met people (in church, for example) who smell really good; I ask them what they're wearing, and it's generally something I've tried, but just doesn't smell as good on me. Conversely, I can wear Calgon Morning Glory body spray, and have 5 people in one day tell me how good I smell. I think it's just a matter of finding something that goes well with your body chemistry.

I had a housemate the last two summers who wore WAY too much of some designer scent. You could always tell if Aran was awake or had just gone out because you could smell his cologne in the halls -- not just that it was there, but the direction he was headed.

Of course, freak that I am, I love Aran's smell. I don't care that he wears too much of it, I think it smells sexy on him. The pheromones, of course. He knows what he's doing.

I've got a date tonight with a girl who I've decided frequently smells a lot like "Girl." It's some sort of mix between fabric softener and hand lotion.

Nate - if we get a Oregon Hatracker thing together, will you be there?

These guys sell some good stuff. They used to have one that was "cut grass," but sadly, it appears to be discontinued.

Frankly, I think I smell fabulous. Yep, I like to walk around with my arm raised and my nose as close to "the pit" as I can get. It really gets me going in the morning, and keeps me up all day long. [No No]

But seriously, I too cannot get enough of the smell of our sweet little one (9 months in a couple weeks) after her bath. I can honestly just sit there and cuddle her kissing her head just to smell it. Nothing like that in the world.

My aunt smells like heaven, and always has. She claims it is Tide and Downy Fabric Softener. I tried it. Nope. Didn't work. But when I smell her, I feel safe and loved, even though, basically, she is pretty whacky.

I really like the smell of horses. Not as in dirty stalls - but as in the smell of old tack.

Was that directed towards Nato, or myself? If towards myself, I think I will drive up if its after classes get out (Dec 11th). Or heck, I might even fly up. I checked plane tickets, and since incentive is very nice right now, I might be able to go based off incentives (200 buck flight) and still be able to go to wenchcon. I've been trying to budget a lot of things lately, so we'll see. The alternator on my car set me back a good 400 bucks. [Frown]

Handy travel phrases:

Du riechst gut.

Hueles bueno.

Tu as un bon odeur.

您嗅到好

Or...

Dondes es T_Smith?
Yo soy el baño.
Bailan con T_Smith.
T_Smith es muy guapo.

Hmmm... its been a while since I've taken spanish. What it should translate to is:

Where is T_Smith?
I am the bathroom.
Dance with T_Smith.
T_Smith is very hot and sexy and you need to kiss him right now.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Bailan? That'll get you a group dance.

Then again, that might be just what you're going for. [Smile]

Huele bueno, amigo. Donde esta la tienda de helado?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Me gusta helado con dulce de leche. El rabado roja y rabado loco es en el cocina ayudan mortar la agua.

I really need to brush up on my spanish. I wonder if you can even translate my garbled nonsense.

Well, according to the Babelfish,

I like ice cream with candy of milk. Crazy the red and rabado rabado one is in the kitchen help to mortar the water.

Yeah. Read you loud and clear.

When I was in Mexico and couldn't think of what to say, I'd just whip out a Shakira lyric and sound suave. Something like:

Ayer vi pasar una mujer debajo de su camello

or

Suerte que mis pechos sean pequenos si no los confundas con montanas

always got me far.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

It was supposed to say: The crazy radish and the red radish are in the kitchen helping to kill the water.

I remeber a lyric in Spanish that I thought was one of the more powerful love lyrics.

It translated to: How much do you lack if my love for you is free.

It was by this high pitched little girl named Luz Clarita. I wish I remember the exact words in spanish. The translator doesn't work.

Here's a handy travel phrase I found while google searching for something totally unrelated:

¿Quién iba a saber que bailando el "Hokey-Pokey" se ahuyenta a los osos?

(I am allowed to derail my own thread, by the way)

Posted by martha (Member # 141) on :

But Eric Slaine, do you smell LIKE an ashtray at fifty paces? That's the real concern of this thread. And if you do, you don't belong here.

Thank you for the clarification, martha. If I smelt like an ashtray, I likely could not smell them. This is a strange phenomena that I have picked up since quitting smoking 3 years ago! My sense of smell is WAY acute!

I kinda smell like fresh cut onions....except for the making random people cry part I can't really see any useful application to my odiferous aroma.
It wasn't always like this you know...butafter I started cutting the onions for the sandwiches....
Hey, that reminds me...anyone know how to get the smell of onions out of their skin? Showers don'twork baths don't work being sprayed with a garden hose at 3 am doesn't work...I'm running out of ideas...maybe tomato soup...or is that for skunks? Ah well

Posted by Jaxonn (Member # 5163) on :

For the onion smell- try lemon juice. Worked for me when I used to work at Subway in college.
Baby powder is the best smell. Lots of women I know, myself included, use Shower to Shower after baths. It smells good for a long time too!

Okay, here is a secret for guys who want to wear cologne but they don't like to smell really strong like guys in high school. Get yourself some "Chrome" cologne and just put on ONE SPRAY! For some reason, guys don't seem to understand that spraying yourself with cologne will kill your "smell buds" for that particular smell. If you can smell your cologne you are wearing too much!

And guys, if you routinely shower and wear plenty of deodorant (Old Spice) you will probably get plenty of chicks saying you smell good.

The great thing about guys is that you don't have to smell like shampoo to get a chick to dig you (although that's probably a bonus). The important thing is that, if you're nice and clean, your natural smells will come through, which is good. Guys are attracted to sweet smelling girls because guys are not sweet smelling. Girls like man smells, phermones and what not. Most girls will compliment a man's smell just to discover that it's Right Guard or something.

This has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever read.

Back on track, though, Juliette bought me this cologne for my birthday or something a while back. I don't wear it very often, but I've when I have worn it I've gotten quite a lot of comments on how good I smell.

Wow, that sounds like it smells nice!

One thing I smelled once that I wished came in soap form was the entire "Discovery Channel" store. It smelled like fresh dirt, which seems to defeat the purpose, but I couldn't help it. It turned me on.

French perfume experiences:

The first time I went to France, I spent a ridiculous amount of money on the newest Yves St. Laurent scent, In Love Again. (we give our perfumes French names, they give theirs English names) I kept waiting for it to make it to the states, but I never did find any. I still have about an eighth of a bottle left, and I only wear it on very very special occasions. So when I was in France again last year, I searched frantically for it, only to find it was discontinued. (I did, however, find a knockoff version, Madly Amoureuse , which smells identical but lasts about 5 minutes.) However, Yves St. Laurent had a new one out called City Girl that smelled identical - kind of a citrussy thing. Has anyone seen City Girl in the States? I'm going to have to buy some more eventually or stop dating altogether.

Oh man, Annie.

I know where you could get it but there's no hope of either of us getting there.
The Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah, GA has a booth with every weird foreign cologne that I can think of. Too bad it's a million miles away.

I don't know if it matters, but half my family lives in France. Maybe I can get some for you?
