I think the best part was when Ralphie stepped on the garden rake, smacking herself in the face....

that was great. .

That was great, but it hardly compares to when we got Toni drunk enough to start topless table-dancing. Man, those memories will last a lifetime. And the pics I took will last substantially longer...

Okay, you imposters (or improper posters, same difference), I get to post the first REAL narrative. Sorry your computer hates you, Jamie -- I know you got here first, but only because I LET you start this thread [Razz]
(actually, Myr let you start it, because after I gave her Joel's Lego collection to play with, I pointed her in the direction of the computer room, and apparently the legos won out.)

So I got to Bartley's around 6:35 and discovered that not only had everyone been waiting there for half an hour, some had been there for over an hour (Godric, I think, was the first one there). Someone else will have to tell the story of how the First Ones recognized each other.

I could smell the delicious burgers from around the corner. When I got there, this little white-haired man was taking everyone's orders. We were me, Suneun, Mike, Myr, Dragon, Dragon's Mom, Sarahdipity, Bokonon, Paul Goldner, his friend who posts even less than Mike does, Mackillian, and Godric. I think that's everyone, yes?

Whoever designs the smileys should use Godric's face as the model. I don't know why exactly I think that -- his face is just so expressive.

Eventually we got seated, and those fabulous burgers arrived (okay, so the next time I eat there I'm going to get a real burger, not a veggie one). Yum.

After dinner we piled into Myr's car and Dragon's mom's car, and went to an ice cream place around the corner from my house (Christina's in Inman Sq, if anyone is interested). They have weird flavors like "carrot cake" and "honey lavender," and they happened to have enough tables so we could all sit down. I have to say, at my table we got a little punchy, teasing Myr for having a klutz cup (ice cream dish with cone upside down on top) and for proving that she deserved it (if she hadn't pointed out that she'd dropped her ice cream on the floor, we never would have noticed).

Then we all went back to my place and discovered that it is possible for me to fit 12 people in my room (albeit a bit stuffy). Were any of us aware that according to Massachusetts law, any more than two people together in a room with their shoes off is considered an orgy?
We talked about everything, books and films and american culture, and moreover about all the people we know and what we know about them.

At some point, we had the brilliant idea of calling other Jatraqueros. Jamie had a couple of numbers in her phone, so we called Adrian and left probably the weirdest message she's ever had on her voicemail. Then we called Ralphie, who gave us Anne Kate's and Ela's phone numbers. I talked to Anne Kate -- I don't know why it surprised me that she has SUCH a Southern Accent (please forgive me if I offend, but I've always associated Southern accents with stupidity, and I have known Anne Kate so long without ever hearing her speak that it was startling to realize that she's a counterexample of that assumption).

We called Ela, and talked to her and JaneX and Shlomo, and they are awesome! The phone went all the way around the circle for them. I found out that Ela went to MIT and used to go to the Israeli dancing night there.

I asked Dragon's mom if we were turning her into a Hatrack addict, and she said she doesn't have time. But she did say that Dragon can visit us by herself next time!

Myr was telling us about how her mom won't let her buy any orange clothing, because she already has "too much," whatever that means -- maybe her mom worries that Myr is a gang member or something. So Godric told her, "Be proud of your orange-wearing ways."

So finally people dispursed to their various places. I'm glad that Paul and Bok are such close neighbors of mine, we will have to do mini-picnics in the near future. Joel dropped Jamie off at the Orange Line and I'm glad to see she made it home (it's that invaluable driving-in-the-middle-of-the-night skill that she has perfected). Suneun and Godric and Myr are strewn on various couches and the guest bed as I type (we made Mike sleep on the floor).

Does anyone know, was this the biggest Hatrack Picnic outside of Utah? How many people got together on the beach in LA?

I am so happy to have met you all. I feel like I am dreaming, except that now I have faces to go with the names.

In the first one three years ago on the beach in LA we had only seven. Slashy, Richard Berg, Brian Worth, Deany and Mikey, Jacob Porter, and me. Beyond Endercon I think perhaps this latest gathering in Boston was the biggest hatrack picnic ever. Was it not?

I loved the phone call! Wish I could have been there with you guys. Oh, wait, I should say with y'all. [Smile] Yes I have a very southern accent, so people tell me. To me it seems you guys are the ones with the weird accents, though, of course. (They are so cute! I like to imitate them like Arthur Stewart. "Hey, you guys wanna soda?")

I've always hoped my accent was one of those cultured sounding ones and not the back woods variety but since my voice on tape recordings always makes me cringe, I'm rather afraid perhaps not. [Smile]

Sounds like it was a very fun gathering! Call me up anytime! Wish I could join you for the next one!

Sounds like you folks had a great time.

Would it be too foreward of my to mention that my family just acquired 13+ acres in Connecticut that look to me like the perfect place for a picnic? [Wink]

Oh yeah, and go New England! Everyone there is so wicked awesome!

Oh, alright, I'll say it.

There was an honorary 13th member of the picnic last night, Emperor Palpatine... As a 3-year-old. In 2-D pictoral form. On Myr's chest. Taped to her t-shirt, freaks. [No No]

Happy Emp? [Smile]

It was a good time, had by all, I think. At least, I hope I didn't tick off too many people, what with my gabbing on, and on, on...

On a sad note, despite my well-founded misgivings, I was forced to disabuse Ralphie of the belief that I speak with a Boston accent. Though I threw in a pity 'wicked', since it was obvious she was about to break down and cry right there on the phone.

Anyway, it was awesome to see all these (young, cooler, smarter, more attractive) people at the picnic. I just wish I hadn't been the oldbie, at the ripe old age of 27. I do want to see some of the circus ways of martha and co. (yes, Hatrack has our very own circus freaks!).

Oh, and can I mention how much I hate the T?? I stood in Union Sq. for a HALF HOUR waiting for a bus to show up. I had to take a 7 dollar taxi, instead of a 75-cent bus. But someone complimented my Stinko-Man t-shirt, so I suppose that worked out well.

So anyway, New England r00lz, the rest of u dr00lz!

I was sitting in Amherst thinking of not going when Feyd IMed me asking why I wasn't in Boston. So rather than getting chewed out for being a wus. So I hopped in my car and drove out to Boston. After getting off the T at Harvard Square I realized I had far too much time to kill (almost 1 hour and 15 minutes). I decided to first find the place so that if I wandered around for a while at least I'd know where it was. Naturally when deciding if I should go left or right I went left when I ought have gone right. After I realized I was heading away from everything I turned around. I carefully avoided the people with the map who were obviously looking for someone to help them figure out where they were. I walked back past the guy begging with his dog, the guy begging who was getting in people's faces and the guy begging who sorta laughed at me when I was stumbled the first time I walked by. I walked past a store called serendipity and checked out their shoes. Did you know that wool clogs can cost 75 dollars? That's just crazy. Although, they were really comfy. I finally figured out where Bartley's was. I noticed that there was a bookstore next door. I popped in to find a few books for birthdays. I still had an thirty minutes left. I noticed there were seats across the street from the restraunt and sat down to work on some homework I'd brought with me. I now know that Godric was sitting right next to me however this fact escaped me at the moment. I spent a lot of time watching the restraunt and realized I wasn't sure if I was supposed to meet people at 6 or 6:30. I figured since Dragon was meeting us with her mom I'd look for people who obviously didn't know each other and one of them looked like they had a parent with them. At about 6 I decided that sitting across the street was not getting me any closer to that wonderful smell of grease. I noted that there were these 2 guys who were standing around looking for people. And the guy who was sitting on the bench next to me checks his watch and walks over. So I've picked out my suspects and decide to watch and see what happens. Well the guy sitting near me ends us shaking hands with them and they introduce themselves. So I stand around a little notice another guy leaning against a pole. After a little bit I figure I should just ask them if they're Hatrackers. Turns out that indeed they are and so is the guy who was standing against the pole.
Bok (pole boy) must have been *really* hungry. He kept trying to get us into the restraunt with a guess of how many chairs we needed. It's a good thing he didn't get us in though because we under estimated by 4. Bok also annouced he would like to be called BokBok at some point. *waits to be hurt*

Godric is, by the way, crazy. (I mean that in a positive sense.) He came up from Pennsylvaina on a BUS. That's dedication for you.

Dragon came with her mom. Her mom looked noticiably concerned. However by the end of the night she seemed to be having a good time as well.

Bok was indeed the oldest one there. But don't let him fool you. He looked just as young as the rest of us.

*/myr had the best introduction attempt. She just came up to our group and said, "Do I know you?" We were all really slow and basically responded with "I don't know do you " or "No we don't know you". But all is good because we finally figured it out.

*/myr/ whatever other names she has got several people to profess their love for her.

I got to ride in Dragon's mom car in the seats that sit backwards in the back! Boston drivers are even more terrifying from that point of view.

And we were all too chicken to talk to Ralphie. Bok even tried to get out of it because he didn't think his voice sounded enough like Matt Daemon. Godric was finally conned into it and of course mac talked to her since she was the one calling people.

It was a great time and I made it home right as I really started falling asleep at the wheel.

It was nice to meet you all and mmmm burgers and most importantly ice cram!

Since I was the one not really mentioned by martha, I will correct her a little (sorry!)

"Paul Goldner, his friend who posts even less than Mike does"

First of all, I'm his BROTHER! [Smile]

actually, I don't know who posts more, me or Mike, I will say I post almost exclusively on the "think of a lyric thread"

Anyway, the picnic was awesome. It was really cool to meet all these people, I'm just disappointed i didn't get a chance to talk baseball with bok, kinda cause we're in a fantasy league together.

Yes, I told * that I loved her, every time she said something I started laughing, it was fantastic. I also told her i needed to take her home with me, sadly, that did not happen. Oh well, maybe next time [Smile]

Bartley's is delicious.

When Paul and I got there, I saw someone with a strongbad t-shirt, and I thought to myself, he HAS to be from hatrack, even though I know other people wear those shirts. It turned out I was right.

Fun times.

Okay, I didn't realize you were brothers (did I mention I'm a bit slow at times). But when I said you post less than Mike, I meant MY brother Mike, whose hatrack name is actually Mike.

BokBok, I'm so sorry you had to take a cab. If we'd known, we would've given you that ride. No wonder I don't take buses in this town.

Dang it.

My story:

I drove down to Malden to catch the end of the Orange Line on the T, figuring that taking the T would be way easier than trying to find a parking spot in Harvard Square on a Saturday night.

I would've been right if not for the Big Dig. The last two stops on the Orange Line were trainless because of construction, so they "shadow bussed" us to the first working station, Wellington Square. From there, I took the Orange Line in, then switched to the Red Line at Downtown Crossing. While waiting for the next train, I THOUGHT I saw someone wearing a "The enemy's gate is down" t-shirt, but the person disappeared and I figured I was hallicinating.

Rode Red Line to HQ and started my quick walk to Bartley's. Saw same person with green backpack and that tshirt and realized either I was hallucinating and/or delusional, or it was one of us.

Turned out to be martha. [Razz]

When we arrived, just under the wire and ordered immediately before we were seated, everyone (ten of them, plus us two) were standing around in a circle. We went into the restaurant and were crammed around a table meant for four (CRAMMED) and commenced babbling and eating. I shot a straw paper at martha, who spent a couple minutes trying to figure out who did it, realized it was me, and promptly shot one back.

Paul got a gargantuan burger that required squishing to get "small" enough to bite, but it was still huge. Myr got the baby version of Paul's burger and daintily commenced eating hers with a knife and fork.

We have photographic proof of both.

The we piled into two cars and headed over the ice-cream place that martha talked about. This place has flavors that seem like the jelly-belly flavors of the ice cream world: ginger, fresh mint, lavender, etc. We think that Paercival's table (with martha and myr and godric) made fun of us. Paercival flicked cone bits at Paul, Paul pretended not to notice.

Then we all trooped over to martha's place, disturbing her roommate, who was surprisingly good-natured about having twelve people drop in. We crammed (we did a LOT of cramming) into martha's room, sitting on the bed, floor, chairs.

We talked about random things like orange and silver astronaut suits. Godric held his hands over his ears as some of us conversed about Tolkien being dull and tough and not written so well with crappy dialogue. We stopped when we realized that Godric's head might've exploded.

Then I mentioned that Ralphie had told me that we had to talk about her.

Myr said, "About her RACK?!"

Now, you have to understand. Myr has this wonderfully enthusiastic voice about EVERYTHING, so that comment about rack sounded, well...very enthusiastic.

Then someone mentioned something about bisexualism ( I can't remember how it came up).

I said that's being indecisive.

Martha agreed, saying that someone else she knew said the same thing.

I said, "It's like boxer-briefs, the indecisive underwear."

Whereupon Paul piped up, "But they're COMFORTABLE." Then Paul realized he'd said that out loud and turned an alarming shade of red.

Then I realized I had other Hatracker phone numbers.

Let the games begin!

First we called Adrian's cell, but she didn't answer, so we left a whacky-ass message.

We wanted to call Olivet, but it was ten pm and we thought her kiddos would be in bed.

Then I realized I had Ralphie's number. Obviously, we called. Her answering machine picked up, I held out the phone and all twelve of us shouted, "HI!"

So Ralphie picked up.

We passed the phone around to those with the courage to speak to her (Godric, BokBok). Ralphie informed me that if anyone else wanted to talk to her after this phone call, it'd cost $3.99/min.

Still no takers.

So we got more numbers from Ralphie and commenced calling Anne Kate and Ela, Shlomo and JaneX. Played "pass the phone around the room."

We wanted to call Dra, but ran out of time, as folks had to get home at semi-reasonable hours (before 2-3 a.m.) and sleep and then get up to do the dreaded homework.

Joel nicely dropped BokBok off at Union Square (where we didn't know the bus wouldn't show up! o_O) and then me off at Sullivan Square (which is an Orange Line t-stop). I waited 15 minutes for a train, then rode up to Oak Grove (Big Dig has allowed the trains up again).

My car was still in the parking lot. [Big Grin]

Driving home, I realized that my contact was totally effed up in my left eye, and I had to drive most of the way with one eye open.

Glad I didn't get pulled over.

I had a great time. We should DEFINATELY do this again!

And, we should start an East Coast/West Coast contest of some kind. (East of the mizzipy, west of the mizzipy).

Mack and all,

I realized three things from the narratives so far.

1. If I had gone, there would have been two cars with the back seat that faces back(the Volvo jumpseat-was Dragon's mom' car a Volvo wagon?)

2. Dragon's mom and I would probably be about the same age.

3. I would have had more fun at the Htracker's picnic than at the family picnic I went to.

Mack, I am very disappointed that there was no off-flipping. Perhaps it was because of Dragon's mom? If this is the case, you may no longer flip me off, because I may well be her age. It would be very disrespectful of you, you see.

The offer to drop you off at one end of the Holyoke Range still stands, as well as any of you other yutes. Dragon's mom and I will have coffee at Atkins Fruit Bowl while you all exercise.

When we had jsut arrived we looked around and my Mom asked me if I knew what any of these people looked like. It so happened that this comment was overheard by the five people standing behind us who asked if we were looking for the people from Hatrack. Yay! Then a woman wearing a cool cloak walks by and I thought to myself "she looks like someone cool, wonder if she's looking for us?" Turns out that was Suneun. [Smile]

The fun started for me before I even got to Boston. I met with Suneun and Mike in Providence and I got to play juggling! Suneun taught me the basics and I sorta kinda got the three-ball thing down before we had to head on out. Juggling is wonderful fun, I highly recommend it.

At Harvard Square I got to drive around in circles for a while, looking for a parking spot. Well, finally I just shoved my lil' RAV in a sorta-parking-spot, doing some interesting maneuvers, including some over-the-curb-action. Little does anyone know, the Let's Make Fun of Kris started then, when a guy smoking on the sidewalk next to my sorta-parking-spot asked me if I was a stunt driver. But we had a nice conversation and after a while he pointed me in the direction of Bartley's. It was right across the street! Hooray for the best parking spot (even if it was unintentional). I met back up with Suneun and Mike and I proceeded to stare creepily at a group of people until I decided to ask them if I knew them. But it was all good, because I recognized Dragon's smile and I think pointing at her and saying "You're Dragon!" made everyone realize who we were. Bartley's was some good eatin. We all talked and introduced ourselves (again) and watched in morbid fascination as Paul ate his droopy, slimey burger. 'Course, mine was just as gooey, but it was goooood.

More good food followed at Christina's ice cream place. Mmmmmmm. We got to play Loud And Obnoxious Customers, it was great.

Then, as you know, we piled into martha's room and all that jazz. More good times.

Mike, martha, Suneun, Godric and I went to Joel's house for sleeping and taking turns on the computer. In the morning, we made use of the random box of Legos in the living room. This is how we amused ourselves for quite a while. It's amazing what Legos will do with a little persuation [Smile] Anyway, after way too much fun with that, we went on to...guess what... *more* good food! We experienced "breakfast heaven" at Sound Bites (which had an orange and black sign that I approved of greatly). Then it was bye-bye Godric [Frown] . Settlers-of-Catan lessons followed back at Joel's...that game seriously rocks. I returned home in a state of severe hyperness.

...I can't wait til next time! [Cool]

More when I get my own internet and am not at the library doing homework.

A few excerpts from Godric's travelog:

"The first thing I noticed about travelling via bus is that it all seems so haphazard and based not on whether one has previously bought a ticket, but on a first-come-first-serve basis..."

"An hour layover in New York city was not long enough to grab a quick bite to eat and find my departure gate. Both my stomach and I growled..."

"I arrived in Boston at about 4:20pm. We're supposed to meet four miles away at Bartley's at 6:00pm. A brisk pace should get me there with a little time to spare and allow me to see a bit of the city."

"I passed by the Cheers bar. Sadly, as far as I can tell Ted Danson isn't bartending. Fortunately, neither is Woody Harrelson."

"I arrive at Bartley's early and loiter about until everyone else shows up. An eight hour trip (nine if you count the layover) for burgers. This place had better be good! I think I'll have a Jack Nicholson..."

"Don't let Paul Goldner fool you. He might be woefully ignorant of pop-culture references ('It's getting hot in here') but he's a really friendly and likeable guy. His brother Paercival is the one you've really got to watch out for! He has no qualms about flinging bits of waffle cone at you!"

"Mackillian is the first (and only) person I've ever met off the internet who turned out to be exactly like I pictured. Except she didn't flip anyone off -- a terrible disappointment..."

"Martha is much younger than I thought (although I suppose if I had payed more attention I might not have assumed she was an old maid). She has penetrating eyes and a sharp sense of humor. And she made her boyfriend put us up for the night -- I don't even want to know what devious means she uses for such coercion."

"Sarahdipity is wonderfully quirky and downright pleasent. I think she actually travelled the farthest for this get together (from Nebraska) but since she's going to school in MA, I guess that doesn't really count."

"Bokonon is an old fogey..."

"Myr/* is even more stunnnning in real life than she is in topless pictures. If I lived any closer I might have to woo her -- or at least become random stalker #537."

"Suneun easily out-fashioned us all with her cloak. She seems to possess some sort of magical powers over Legos -- she can bend them to her will. And she can do things with her nose that I think are illegal in most states."

"Mike might be a better lurker in person than even online. After you meet him, you know he's there but you can't ever seem to keep your focus on him and soon forget who he is -- in fact, who am I talking about?"

"Dragon is quiet and does indeed have a stunning smile. But what you've got to watch out for is her mom -- who's pretty darn hip and cool for a mom!"

"I talked to someone claiming to be Ralphie on the phone but she sounded so cute I can't really believe it's our own innuendous purveyor of The Love (Ralphie Love, that is)."

"I played Egyptian Rat Screw with Myr/* and Suneun. They thought I didn't know what I was doing -- but I showed them! I got rid of all my cards first! Mwahahahahaha!"

"We ate breakfast at a wonderful little place called Sound Bites whose name I don't really understand at all."

"My bus back home was supposed to leave at 2:30pm but I got there a little early and jumped the 2:00pm bus instead which would give me almost a two hour layover in New York -- certainly enough time to catch a quick bite!"

"About three hours into the bus ride home my body evolved to fit perfectly into the bus seats and I no longer felt constantly uncomfortable."

"New York! And a bite to eat! ... And a disturbingly warm Coke. The cooler must have been set to an ungodly warm temperature. The newstand owner is lucky I had to run to catch my bus or things might have become a bit heated."

"Home finally at about 1:00am, Sunday night! ... Wait a minute! A restraunt called Sound Bites! I get it! Ha!"

Thanks all you New Englanders! And extra special thanks to Martha and her boyfriend for putting me up for the night! I had a wonderful, wonderful time! I hope to see you all again. And if you're ever down my way, feel free to put upon me for food, accomodations or company.

Remind me to sit at home and wait for a phone call next time there's a Boston Get Together.

[Wink]

Sounds like a fun time guys!! And if anyone cares to wait like.... 5 hours for a download over AIM, I have about 5 straight minutes of Myr giggling insanely. She does that a lot.

Godric, may I be your honorary stalker?

wow Godric, I don't know what to think of your name being abbriviated to "God" ... kinda scary in a neat but distubing way...

[Angst] or [Hail]

By the way, you wouldn't happen to have been disguised as a fish the other day would you?

Sounds like fun! Maybe you can do it again next year, when I'll most likely be living in the area... *hopeful face*

Martha, I'll be accepting applications Monday-Friday 8:00am-4-00pm all next week.

Dragon, disguised as a fish? [Confused]

Mack, you should feel wonderful about that! You're the only person to have lived up to my expectations. [Wink]

Godric, there was a thread about God appearing as a fish and speaking Hebrew but I can't find it now! (darn search to heck [Wall Bash] )

Are there pictures up?

I sent the most Group Photo-ey picture there was to foobonic. I have a few of us playing with Legos and, of course, the burger-eating ones. I can send these in too.

Actually, I'll do that right now.

::goes to do that::

Yey photos!

Hey Godric, did the vidcam produce anything worthy?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Dragon, I remember the thread but I can't find it. I did however find the link the thread produced. Ironic, isn't it?

Suneun, I haven't gotten a chance to loook at any of the video (all 2-3 minutes of it) yet. This isn't surprising. I have video over a year old I haven't looked at yet. I'm better keeping up with writing letters to people than watching all the footage I have.

I wonder why I bother... [Dont Know]
