Travelogue Day 1:

If I’d known that Arthur couldn’t ride a horse to save his life, I’d never have signed on at Camelot. The only good thing is that he’s an excellent walker, otherwise I’d find myself carrying him. The things I do for my Lord.

We headed out at first light this morning, off to search for Knights for the (ahem) Round Table. To defend the innocent, succor the widows and orphans blah blah blah blah. God help me.

At the first village we came to, we found a large group of villagers yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs. In the front of the mob, there was a man, covered from head to toe in dirt. I’m quite sure I’ve never seen anyone so filthy, a true feat, considering that we live in a century where bathing is considered dangerous. He could only be a ditch digger, to be so dirty. He was also wearing a black cloak, dark glasses, and a fedora. As we approached, we could see another man speaking to the crowd. He was dressed in armor and wore a tidy surcoat.

“A spy! A spy!” cried the crowd.

The unknown knight responded, “How do you know this man is a spy?”

“He looks like a spy!” one woman screamed.

“I’m not a spy,” the man dressed as a spy replied.

“Then why do you look like one?” asked the knight.

“They dressed me this way.”

“Did you dress him this way, village people?”

A man in feather headdress cried, “No! No! No!” Pause. “Well, maybe a little bit, yes. We did do the glasses.”

“And the cloak and hat,” said another person. “But he is a spy!”

“Hang him! He’s a spy! Hang him!” yelled the crowd.

“How do you know that he’s a spy?”

“He turned me into a newt,” said one man.

“A newt?” the knight asked, looking at the man intently.

“I got better.”

Exasperated, the knight replied, “That would make him a witch, not a spy, you idiot.”

“Oh. Well, maybe he’s a witch then. Our mistake. BURN HIM! He’s a witch! Burninate him!”

The knight yelled over the crowd, “Quiet! Quiet! There are other ways to determine if he’s a witch.”

“Oh?”

“Tell me, what do you do with witches?”

“Burn them! Burn them!”

“And what do you burn aside from witches?”

“More witches!” “Wood!”

The knight paused. “So, why do witches burn?”

Silence. “Uh....because...they’re made of wood?”

“Good! So how do you tell if he’s made out of wood?”

“Build a bridge out of him!”

The knight rolled his eyes and took a deep breath. “But are not bridges made from stone as well?”

“Oh, yeah.”

“Does wood sink in water?”

“No! No!” “It floats! It floats!” “Throw him in the pond!” “The pond! The pond!” The villagers yelled.

“Quiet!” called the knight. “What also floats in water?”

“Bread!” “Apples!” “Very small rocks!”

Then my master spoke. “A duck,” said the King of the Britons. The crowd turned to stare at him.

“Exactly!” said the knight admiringly. “So logically...”

The crowd hesitated while the knight looked at them encouragingly. “So...if he weighs...the same as a duck...he’s made of wood!”

A duck was produced, and the two were weighed on an enormous set of scales. The supports were removed and after a moment, the scale balanced rather than tipping to one side or the other.

“A witch! A witch! Burn him! Burninate him!”

And with that, the crowd had a communal barbeque, bringing marshmallows and weiners, in which no one went hungry and there was peace in the land. Except for the witch, of course. The knight had shown himself to be just the man my King was looking for.

The knight addressed my Lord, “Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?”

Arthur stood straighter as music stirred and the low voices of angels began singing. “I am Arthur, King of the Britons.”

“My Liege!”

And so it was that Sir Bedivere joined our party.

INTERLUDE:

At the base of the next hill, a stunningly handsome young man stood. He wore a natty tweed suit with an elegant silk tie. His blond hair did not dare go astray in the stiff British breeze, and instead stood resolutely in place with the liberal encouragement of an astounding amount of hairspray. When he smiled, apparently in approval of the romantic setting and cooperative weather, his teeth sparkled.

“Action!” yelled the director.

The youth held the microphone to his perfect lips and began speaking with the deep, rolling affectation of a radio personality.

“The discovery of Sir Bedivere in the village seems to have encouraged King Arthur. It is as if he was anticipating greater obstacles to finding his knights, and having found one so easily, has become boyantly giddy, even to the point of girlishness. In fact, there are hints that the relationship between Bedivere and Arthur are not limited to that of Liege Lord and vassal. Such suspicions are supported by their propensity to hug at any opportunity and hold hands when they think no one else is looking. This leads us to wonder if there shall ever be an heir for the kingdom. Perhaps in his quest King Arthur will find the --“

Suddenly, a screaming hoard of black dressed spies swarmed the beautiful youth, stabbed him a dozen times with their long knives, then swept off camera.

“Orem!” cried a woman in the camera crew, rushing to his side, only to find him dead. Unlike characters in the rest of the story, he did not get better.

(must express a slight suspicion at the fact that MM was not attempted on...) However, it's just as likely that the mafia decided the doctor would save him, and it would be better to try today....

Posted by msquared (Member # 4484) on :

Actually that is why I asked the doctor to contact me. I was going to tell him/her to not protect me this turn, as the mafia might suspect that and hit some one else, waiting until turn three to take me out. I have no idea if the doctor did this as I never heard from him/her. I am guessing that the doctor did try and protect me but there was no need and that tonight I am a goner. That will not bother me if I get another mafia. I will take two-for-one with the mafia.

Ok I just got the note from Jeni and the person we thought was mafia is not. I am in a quandry. Do I publish the citizens name or not? I will contact them and ask them.

So for this turn I would ask that no one vote for any one. Please abstain.

Whoops. Hi Ryuko!

Narnia, while you might think that on the surface, I do not.

I have a limited time to access the net. While I trust msquared, I don't believe it is in our interest to abstain from voting. I will vote for someone before I sign off.

Also think of this, though I don't believe it. msquared would have set himself up well by acting as a policeman and killing off another Mafia member. At the very least it would get another policeman to come forward and say "hey, that's not my buddy!"

Also, if the Mafia is folowing your reasoning, they wouldn't be casting stones for the very same reason.

Unfortunately, the police will likely be checking me out, wasting a check. This could play right into the hands of the Mafia, who got lots of mileage by killing me last time! [Big Grin]

I do not know what happens with at tie.

Right now there are three votes, each for a different person, so there is a three way tie.

Maybe then either all three die or none of them.

Please folks, remain calm. If the natural causes people die and another townie dies you go from about a 1 in 20 chance of being the next hit to about a 1 in 15 chance. Is it worth it?

Did I not prove myself? Was not HDD mafia? Are your memories so short?

Let's see, the first game of mafia I played, I died for being mafia.

Last game, I died for being a cop.

This game the mafia wants to take me out, hmm? Would that make it a hat trick? [Big Grin]

M², the results of a tie are left to jeniwren's discretion.

Hmm, if it does end up being a tie, I'd be happy to go down, just as long as I take at least one mafioso with me!

If we're gonna VOTE, let's get some evidence out here and UNITE the stinkin votes so we can at least sensibly lynch someone. That way, when a citizen gets killed tonight(or not, hopefully) the odds of pulling a mafia down with him/her are greater. So. Please don't just vote randomly or you'll look REALLY SUSPICIOUS.

Well. I tried that last time, so I remain, as I said above, unconvinced that abstaining will help anything.

Also, if I were Mafia, would I be posting like I have been? If you are that unfamiliar with my style, review my posts. I am not acting uncharacteristicly, and go ahead and vote for me. At least it will whittle down the list. The Mafia lost last time due to the small amount of players at the end.

I vote mainly just to vote against not voting!

Posted by pajeba (Member # 5656) on :

I think msquared has the right idea with the whole abstention thing, voting randomly is much more likely to hurt townies than mafia.
I'm going to wait until msquared or another police gets a positive ID on mafia to vote, so for now I am abstaining.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ok, I see a few possible reasons for Erik to do this.

1) He thinks it'll get me to change my vote. It almost did, actually.
2) He's just trying to mix things up. Erik is fond of that. There are few people who create discord with as much flair as Erik does. [Wink] And fewer still who I could see trying to help lynch themselves for the fun of it. [Big Grin]
3)He wants us to sit here and puzzle this out, and not vote or cast more suspicions.

See, here's my deal... I think Msquared may just be Mafia and that HDD was thrown out as a sacrificial lamb by the Mafioso. Msquared continues posting as a policeman, secure that he won't be lynched by the townies and secure that the Mafia won't gack him either.

Each day he can just pick a person from the list of suspects that he knows isn't Mafia and simply say that his "investigation" turned up nothing. At worst he can do the same for the Mafioso on the list. In the meantime, most smart police quietly ask questions and try to narrow down the field, playing the long game allowing both the town lynchings and the mafia hits to narrow the choices.

But I could be wrong as well. Hey, 'tis just a game and the Mafia know who they are and who they aren't. It's odd that Msquared didn't say who his investigation had cleared though...

Edit to add: There was also the blatant attempt to get the doctor to come out of hiding made by Msquared. Tsk tsk tsk... if you are police, Msquared, you're way to focused on a quick win that won't happen.

What I said. And I thought the same thing about the not revealing his findings!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Sopwith, you could be right.

Or you could be mafia.

Or you could be wrong, but still be a townie.

I happen to think #2 has the best odds.

As for why not to ID someone as definitely being a townie, I can think of several reasons. They would be a tempting target for the mafia -- and it's not like they *glares at Erik* could just try to get them lynched.

Posted by msquared (Member # 4484) on :

And make a target for the mafia of the one other person the townies can trust?

I have contacted the person cleared and if I am given the ok I will give the name. If not, I will honor that persons choice.

When I am killed by the mafia tonight you will see.

Unless the mafia tries to make me look bad by leaving me alive. But everyone I have accused, albiet there has only been one so far, has been guilty. I think it unlikely that the mafia would sacrifice one of thier own this early in the game.

Sopwith, interesting Idea. Sounds like something m^2 would do, seeing as he already said he wanted the doctor NOT to save him last night.

Well, I will get back and vote soon.

Posted by celia60 (Member # 2039) on :

actually, i'd think it would be in the police's best interests to not reveal that name. would the mafia hit the innocent person, or would they add that name to the list of "not a cop" in narrowing the field of choices?

on the other hand, announcing that person would make them the next representative for the police to use, when something happens to m2, and we'd know who to listen to next.

of course, i guess they don't need that representative until they have identified another mafia member...and then we're back to having to decide if they're telling us the truth...

to be honest, if m2 had flat out said "x is a townie" i would probably have suggested we lynched "x" just to see if m2 could indeed be trusted. but he didn't. and i'm still not sure jeni didn't mean to imply his policlyhood in her lynch post.

I still think we should be suspicious of msquared.

Posted by Damander (Member # 4439) on :

I love this game; it cracks me up! [ROFL]

Wow, I can't believe I'm actually going to defend m2. Not for the reasons he has in not posting the person who is cleared, but in the action itself. While I don't think posting the name makes them a prime suspect for the mafia (wouldn't they be trying to find someone that is police or the doctor instead of just a lowly citizen?), posting the name would narrow down the field for the mafia on who could be a potential policeman. Unless of course the police were really clever and posted one of their own as checked. That person would then have credibility, immunity from lynching by the townies, and the mafia would be fooled into thinking they were only a citizen and not police.

Am I making any sense to anyone?

And if a person the police has already cleared comes up for a lynching, the police could always bring forth the name then. But only if it seems they are actually going to get lynched, not if they just get mentioned as a suspect and maybe get a couple votes.

and yet, SHE did not vote yesterday. AT ALL.

I will be back later. And I am going to vote for someone. (hint hint) I hope you all do a little research for yourselves. If you're going to vote, let's do it together and make it count for something. 29 votes for someone random won't kill anyone but a townie.

(and I know that my vote might kill a townie too, but at least it'll be an educated guess!!)

Narnia, you forgot to mention where I got mad at m2 for then asking us to vote and said I was not voting just to spite him. He seems to have crawled under my skin this game. (Nothing personal m2)

Edit to add: I knew my not voting wouldn't have any effect on if HDD got lynched or not, so I knew I wasn't affecting the game negatively by not voting.

I'm really torn.

I agree with Narnia -- I think Damander is mafia.

OTOH, I think Erik is too. And he voted for me! [Razz] But then he took that vote back, and voted for himself. But that might just be to throw us off the scent. [Wall Bash]

I think Erik is just a bit off his rocker and possibly a danger to himself. [Razz] I kind of think he's a citizen that is a little insane.

rivka, you're making me jump at my own shadow!! You're the queen of not trusting anyone! [Wink]

Well, we'll see which one of us kicks the bucket tomorrow (if it's not m2). Then we'll know that one of us is right. [Wink]

Narnia, I wish Becky was playing too. But I have some thoughts to do tribute to her when I do the Knights Who Say Ni! scene.

Okay, now that we all know HDD's dirty, I'm more inclined to belive M2. Maybe not completely, but about 90%. I still don't like the idea of abstaining, because a) it's the only power we citizens have and b) it makes the game more interesting. I also realize that if there is just one vote, then that one vote will be lynched, so it really doesn't matter if 99.99% of us abstain on principle because the one person who doesn't will end up controlling the lynchings. If you think about it, it's a very, very bad thing, because the mafia will take it and run with it.

My suspect list includes eslaine and Sopwith, because Erik's was the first vote yesterday and Soppy's today, both after M2 urged abstinence.

I'm voting for hansenj so there will be a tie and a 50/50 chance of noone getting lynched. My reasons is in my above post.

Edit: unboldening my vote

Just to make this boat tip back and forth I will vote for ESlaine. Since I have not seen conclusive evidence for either individual. And a vote, hoping for good, is better than a lazy citizen. Though I will probably be back to change.

Just to be contrary I vote hansenj that way nobody gets lynched because I doubt either are mafia.

Woo hoo! History repeats!

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I remind you all of my evidence against Damander. (It's a few posts up and it's pretty condemning...) hansenj was Sopwith's random pick. Sopwith didn't even VOTE yesterday when a mafia was going down. Think about THAT. And sarcasticmuppet voted, but it was totally random. Come to think of it, Ryan Hart's vote yesterday was random too. Go check it out! We have some serious mafia here. They only agree when it's a townie going down. I think hansenj has been picked by the mafia and that she's innocent. We don't have anything conclusive about anyone, but I think the evidence leans more towards Damander than it does Erik at this point.

Damander

C'mon townies. Pull together. If you all agree on another person that MAKES SENSE and could be mafia, I'll change my vote.

sorry, but unless Damander gets a few more votes I'm not gonna risk changing it. And my votes aren't random, I've given reason for them both times. [Mad]

Note: Zevlag broke the tie, and Ryan Hart tipped it back. Hmmmm...

3 eslaine, 3 hansenj, and 2 Damander.

I'm now officially changing my vote to Damander. There's still a tie, but I feel better voting for him, somehow.

Now it's 3 eslaine, 3 Damander, and 2 hansenj.

Posted by jamaha (Member # 4874) on :

Narnia, I went back and read Damander's posts, and I absolutely do not think she is mafia. Why would a mafioso be so obvious?? I think she was acting more out of a dislike for m2 than anything else. I think YOU are mafia and just trying to find an easy target to lynch to break the whole hansenj/Erik Slaine thing. I vote Narnia.

Feyd, you and I have grudges that cannot possibly be resolved over a simple game of mafia.

Can I vote Frisco for old times sake, ms. wren?

Seriously, though, last time I got invovled in a tie, I let the godfather live. I think I'll stay away from this one. May the mods sort you out.

Posted by hansenj (Member # 4034) on :

Well hmm...I frankly have no idea who is mafia and who isn't. Everyone is just being too dang suspicious! [Razz]

Right now I'm thinking Narnia because Erik seemed kinda random, and being Damander's roommate, I don't think she's acting all that strange (though if she turns out to be mafia I will feel very deceived [Eek!] ).

I'll keep watching until midnight, and if anyone can bring out some evidence, I'll happily change my vote.

Right under the wire, rivka. That puts it at a tie between Damander (4) and Narnia (4).

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

But Erick has 5, unless he changed it

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

*grumbles*

The rules technically say *by* 9pm Pacific, so I'm going to think about it tonight and decide whether or not to accept your change, Damander. It was exactly *at* 9pm. And by my computer's clock, it was actually a few minutes after. But we'll go with Hatrack's clock and I'll make the decision before tomorrow morning.

Posted by Damander (Member # 4439) on :

If you count my new vote, Erik has 4, Narnia has 3, and I've got 4. So it's between me and Erik.

Edit: *reads above post* Oh, okay.

I won't be terribly sad either way, I didn't realize either way made me be the tied one. So whatever....

sm, I counted his vote.

Votes for Erik:
(maybe) Damander
Erik Slaine
Feyd Baron
Zevlag

Votes for Damander:
Narnia
rivka
Ryuko
sarcasticmuppet

Votes for Narnia:
(maybe) Damander
hansenj
jamaha
newfoundlogic

Votes for hansenj:
Ryan Hart
Sopwith

Did I miss something?

Posted by Erik Slaine (Member # 5583) on :

Wow. rivka changed her vote? Hmmm.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

So, final count:

Hansenj: 2 (Sopwith, Ryan)
Erik Slaine: 4 (Erik, Zevlag, Feyd, Damander)
Damander: 4 (Narnia, Ryuko, sm, rivka)
Narnia: 3 (jamaha, hansenj, nfl)

Erik does NOT have 5 -- I switched my vote, remember? So all Damander did was decide that she tied with Erik instead of with Narnia.

Since I think both she and Erik are mafia, and Narnia is not, I applaud this move. [Wink]

The police have submitted their request. We have decided to wait until we have two mafia names before the next police reveals themself. So do not expect any one to come forward before tomorrow at the earliest, more likely Friday or Monday.

All I can say is that with the people who will die of natural causes, the lynching, and the mafia kill, this will be a very bloody day. [Smile]
