How does November 15th sound? That's when OSC will be in Portland. At Powells and at Borders.

Woo hoo!!

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

::will have to check calendar tomorrow::

I might just take a trip up there. Incentive has been good to me lately.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Yes, definitely there. Thanks for starting the thread, Jeniwren.

I'm trying to talk Frisco into coming, too. [Smile]

Shall we try and get something going above and beyond the signing?

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

If I can get to Portland, I'm there. I don't think I'll be needed in Los Angeles with all the upperclassmen marching band folks, so it looks like a free weekend for me.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

NOooooooooooooooo!!

I probably can't make it. Say Hi to OSC for me [Frown]

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I'm there. DUH! It'll be great.

I didn't know the dates for the tour were posted yet! How exciting!

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

So I'm new at this...could we crash both signings? It would be a blast to just hang out downtown all day, catch the first signing, wend our way over to Borders and shop and eat and laugh and be silly, and then catch the second signing. Is this uncouth?

I think it sounds like a blast and I've decided that I'm going to do it no matter what you all think! HEEHEE

I think I can wrangle up some serious free parking at the LDS institute building on 10th and Market. It's kind of far from Powell's, but we could carpool over and all chip in for parking on that side of the tracks. What do you Portlander's think?

Posted by JonnyNotSoBravo (Member # 5715) on :

Could somebody provide addresses for the particular places where he will be signing books? Do you need to get tickets for the book signing? Do you need a copy of his most recent book to get a signature? *digging up PB copy of Ender's Game* Is Nov. 15th on a Saturday/Sunday? Is he coming to Seattle at all? So many questions...help me by answering some!

Jonny

Edit: Found the Crystal City Tour post and clicked the link. He's coming to Seattle on the 17th! I'll have to call the store and ask about the tickets thing and the book thing. Didn't I read that he was not doing multi city tours anymore starting back in 2001?

Narnia, I won't be able to do both, I don't think. The rest of my family would probably rebel. [Smile] But I'm pretty sure I can do one of them.

The first one is at 2...shall we get together for lunch somewhere and then go? I've never been to a signing before. Do you need to get there far in advance?

Posted by jehovoid (Member # 2014) on :

November 15th, eh?

Shucks, I'm supposed to be clipping my toenails that day. Maybe next year.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

I've been thinking this over, and I think I can possibly make it to the signing if I fly into Portland on Saturday, go to the 7 PM signing (and hey, maybe even the earlier one...it's not that long a flight from Phoenix), fly back on Sunday. Yeah, that might work. Let me talk to the parents about getting plane tickets.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Wow, Shigosei! Flying in for one day!

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Actually, I could even fly in Friday evening after my last class. Looks like fares will run about $200, which I would willingly pay to go to an OSC signing and Hatrack-get together.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Heck, if I did fly over there, I'd be staying for the whole freakin weakend. And if I'd be driving over there, I'd just stay till Thanksgiving.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

T, sounds like a grand idea. I hope you make it. Shigosei, I think that you should really come especially if it's only $200 and it's not too much of a problem for you. You'd add so much to our party.

Jonny, here's a link that answered most of my questions about a signing. Don't worry about the addresses, a bunch of us will probably meet somewhere and go together.

jeni, lunch sounds fantastic. I don't know how early we'd have to get there to Powell's. Hm. What do you guys think? Any ideas for a place and whatever else we want to do?

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

Ok, everyone go see the Cincinatti thread about line numbers and stuff. I will call Powell's and Borders today and see if we can't get some special treatment for ourselves. [Smile] I'll let you know today sometime.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

THIS JUST IN:

I called Powell's. To my surprise, it's NOT the downtown store, but the store out by Washington Square Mall in Tigard. So, serious driving between stores. Walking is definitely not an option. It's only a signing there and they won't be giving out numbers or tickets. It strictly first come first serve.

I called Borders. This is the downtown store across the street from Pioneer Square Mall. At this signing, he will speak as well as sign. Woohoo!! Theirs is first come first serve as well, but the guy I talked to said their event area is really comfy and fun (about 40 or so chairs he said). He also said that they're trying to get the time moved up to earlier if possible (cause their store closes at 9pm and 7pm wouldn't be enough time) so stay tuned for updates.

So what do you think? Should we hang out all afternoon and go to the evening speaking and signing? Will that be too late to get everyone home afterwards??

Talk to me people, this is going to be fun. [Big Grin]

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

It just wouldn't be proper to miss OSC speaking... Now I really want to go. I'll look into getting a ride up there for the weekend.

Edit: and really look into it, as in bug people I know with cars...

What's the plan for the rest of the time? I'm trying to figure out when I should fly in. It's looking like it will probably be Friday night to Sunday afternoon.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Nato, if you can get up to Corvallis, we might be able to take you. I think my whole family will go. Can't help you with the Eugene to Corvallis bit, though. I'm going to probably fly into Portland.

Posted by Patsy (Member # 5699) on :

I vote Borders, absolutely. That's downtown too, isn't it?

If so, then there's so much to do, and many shopping opportunities for me to spend my no-sales-tax Christmas money. [Smile]

I am also thinking that my family may rebel and not want to be there for the signing, though I'm sure lunch and wandering around downtown would be just dandy for them. I may have to beg for a ride back to my step-mother-in-laws place in Gresham. Anyone live out that direction?

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

My flight has been booked! I'll be seeing you all in November!

I've also bought a hard copy of Ender's Game. If I'm going to have OSC sign something, I want it to last forever and ever.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

So who is flying me out?

*waits expectantly*

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Mack! We'd love to have you come if you can get yourself out to Oregon.

Okay, so after this whole outing is over, we should go to somebody's house, have a party, and invite the Cards over! Especially if Kristine is coming.

Also, it looks as though most or all of my family will be coming. So you'll get to meet them too. They're the type of people who would make good Jatraqueros. In fact, the youngest posts here sometimes...

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

Ralphie, where are you in all of this plan making? I want to know what you think and if you have any ideas you Portlander you. [Big Grin]

Jeni, I'm SURE we can get you back to Gresham amongst the group of us. Don't even think about it.

I'm disappointed that his other signing isn't downtown as well. (Powell's) It sounds like there won't be as much time at Borders because it's in the evening, but it is a cooler place to be, so I'm game.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

IF it doesn't bother y'all - I think I'll come sans child, this time. He can visit with his dad, instead.

I know, he was such a cute darn rascal last time, it'll be hard to say okay, but really, mom would sure love a mom's day away.

(And see, I need one - I had to edit so I could correctly spell love)

I think there's a coldstone down there. I'll check, that sounds like a great plan.

We'll miss you Bernard. [Frown]

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Do you suppose Bob oughtta come with so he can analyze everyone's icecream?

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Oh, no...it won't be the same without you. I know how you feel because I thought I wasn't going to be able to make it.

Ice cream sounds great if we can pull that off.

Shan, Nathan's adorable, but I can understand why you might want to come by yourself. Books signings probably aren't good for active little kids.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Well, the SoCal group has had him over...I guess Bob will just have to come to Oregon sometime. He probably doesn't need a job or a permanent residence...he could be the Hatrack Hobo, traveling all over the country visiting Jatraqueros.

well...in my memory could you tell them my sad, sad story of wanting to go to Endercon, and that not happening, then Wenchcon 2004, and that not happening, and wanting him to go to powell's, and that happening AFTER I leave for college in Beloit Wisconsin where he has many many many dedicated fans (and two Jaqueroes!), and a rather large Wisconsin following that would be rather happy if he did show up over here. Please? pretty pretty please? I give you all full authorization to bribe him with the possibility of taking him to see the exibit to see the original Tolkien manuscripts in Milwaukee...Wisconsin...common!! How could he not want to do that?!

My ex - oops, s'cuse me, former husband will take the child so I can take the train to Portland . . . I am tentatively planning on making a weekend of it - any ideas of nice but not expensive motels? Hints about the bus system? Anyone want to go shopping? To the zoo?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Hmmm... that reminds me. I better tell my work and my parents that I'm going out of town that weekend.

And I better earn some extra dough.

Well, looks like some people have to suffer with AOL so that I can earn my incentive bonus.

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

Tea, are you really going to be there? I thought you were just joking, but I'll be seriously stoked about this if you're going to be there too. How cool!

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

ByuCnslr,

If you could maybe get from Beloit to Tom and Christy's in Madison, and Christy is coming to the Ohio gathering then we could get you to the Ohio signing. If not you'd have to get into Chicago but I could take you from there.

But you'd probably miss a Friday of school.

AJ

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

T, are you really coming? That would be awesome!

Shan, there's a Days Inn right downtown not too far from stuff. I would venture to say that that's not too expensive. Anyone know of a motel 6 or 8?

Maybe you could even stay with us. I'd have to check as it's not my house, but I'll look into it.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Yeah, I was definately thinking about it. Oddly enough, I talked to a friend today who works for Delta Airlines, he told me that for working there he gets free flights. I jokingly asked him if he could hook me up, and he said he'd check into it.

Even if he can't, I'm still looking into it. My sister got to go to Europe 3 times because she was in the Drill Team, and my parents helped pay for it. Since I am paying for it myself, AND I'm 18, AND they never once paid for me to go anywhere (a little bitter here, can't ya tell), I'm pretty sure after reminding them of that, they'll have no objections.

But don't make it official. I'm just seriously looking into it.

Edit: Test.

Thanks, Shig. It would be mondo fun to take a trip out there, assuming I can afford it. I'm trying to work out budgets for things (mainly because I'm trying not to rely on parents for money... ever). Mainly the two things I am trying to budget are Mission and WenchCon, but if some extra dough happens to come my way... [Smile]

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

T, it's obvious that you should ditch the mission and spend all your money on Hatrack escapades. [Evil]

Yes, I'm only kidding. I'll even add a [Wink] for good measure.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

I won't deny sitting in my hot tub at nights, figuring out that if I was handed 100,000 dollars, I'd go on a road trip to each state and visit as many Jatraqueros as I can.

And then...

THE INTERNATIONAL JATRAQUEROS!!!

Me and Annie, Touring Switzerland (hey, she offered)
Troubs, EG, and Me, on a wild hunting trip in New Zealand.
Me and Jebus, doing.. jebus-y things... in... wherever the heck he lives in Ireland.
Kama and Myself, doing... who cares, I'd be with Kama.

AND MANY MORE!!

Oh, and I'd probably buy some Leiderhosen, also. But that goes without saying.

-----

But, to be perfectly honest, percieving what I think to be God's infinite sense of humor, I'll be sent to Portland anyway on my Mission (or some other Jatraquero filled mission area). So when I knock on your door, you better feed me. Or at least say hi. Or at least don't sic dogs after me.

(PS, I have a Cousin serving near Greensboro, one in Jacksonville this upcoming December, one that just got off from Dallas, a friend in Birmingham, and more cousins along the east coast).

Don't forget - it must include jello - whatever else you feed him, make sure there is jello -

what's your fave flavor, T?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

It's all about the lime, with pineapples. Or grapes.

Oh ya...

::drools::

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

How about lime - with mandarin oranges?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Orange Jello with manderin oranges, yes.
Cherry with manderin oranges, yes.
Lime with manderin oranges, acceptable.

The line of progress goes like this:

Lime with Pineapple-
Lime with Grapes-
Orange with Manderin Oranges-
Lime-
Cherry with Manderin Oranges-
Orange-
Cherry-
Lime with Manderin Oranges-
Lime with Banana's-

And so forth and so forth until you hit the bottom of the chain:

Blue jello.
Blue jello with anything.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Blue jello is revolting - I wouldn't feed that to my worst enemy.

Blech.

I must admit I am partial to lime jello, mixed with cottage cheese, Cool Whip, mandarin oranges and allowed to settle.

Nummmmmmy.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Hmmm...

Recalling one of the picnics, I do believe that's the recipe of Jon's moms Jello salad. Only, I think he used Lemon Jello instead.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Oh no - it must be lime, green lime , to offset the orange.

Gracious me!

I talked with my Team Leader at work yesterday. She said she'd work it so that I can have that weekend off.

Portland's not the easiest town to be driving in, either. I think I scared Bees a few times [Angst] during last January's (?) get-together - and I wasn't even trying to !

Keeping track of what's one-way or two-way streets, whilst looking for street names and landmarks, with a child jabbering in the back seat about mama getting everyone lost - I have only EVER done that once [Blushing] , when he was five but he WILL remember it and tell everyone without the least compunction -

bad combo. [Wall Bash]

So. Folks. What's going on??? We're planning on the evening signing for tons of fun-filled mingling and book shopping. For Saturday during the day, I was thinking of Saturday's Market, then lunch, more shopping?? What do you guys think?

Friday night is a fun night too. I'd love for us to get together. Nathan is going to be in as well as Annie(and possibly someone else) so we need to maximize on our fun time. One thing to consider. We're hosting possibly the largest gathering of freshmen in college in hatrack history. We definitely have to go places where all ages can hang out. [Big Grin] Ideas for Friday night, Saturday day and afternoon anyone?

I'm really looking forward to this weekend, it'll be like a mini vacation for me!!

Well, the money situation isn't looking too promising.

But if Hobbes and Annie are even half as nausiating in person, that may be a good thing.

And if I did go, I will have met 33 Hatrackers since EnderCon and will be forced to label myself a bigger geek than Nathan.

That said, if there's any way I can go, I will. It's only a 6 hour drive.

Don't worry, if worse comes to worst I will come pick you up in my crappy looking car. ;)No one should have to worry for wont of a ride from the airport...

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

I'm sure people coming from the airport will be able to find rides and "homestays." Sadly, I'll be staying in Corvallis and probably bumming a ride up to Portland myself, so I can't really offer either. [Frown]

I'm getting in late Friday night and I'll probably want to hang out with my family and go home. There's a slight possibility one of you out-of-staters could spend the night at my house, but it's a two-hour drive from Corvallis to Portland. In other words, it's better for you to stay in Portland if you can.

I am interested in getting together for most of Saturday. The market and book shopping sounds great.

Hobbes...(drumroll)

it looks like you are the proud winner of....

a piece of my living room floor!!! WOOHOO!! This high traffic area serves as a living room, a choir rehearsal/music room, a place to dump our coats room and much much more!! With an airmattress and a flat pillow (as fluffy as we can find) this will make a fine place for you to crash during the fun-filled OSC weekend in Portland!!

The best part is that to your left and down the stairs is...the bathroom! Oh, and....the DVD player. Oh yeah....and....Annie might just be hanging around too! [Smile]

So, now that you've won, what do you think? [Wink]

Finally a chance to dust off my Hatrack River login. If anyone wants to know how to get around Portland, where to eat, etc, let me know. Also what kind of food and how much you want to spend.

Portland has changed a lot in the past couple of years, and there are a bunch of great new restaurants, bakeries, brewpubs, etc.

Even if you're planning on going to the Beaverton Powell's and/or the downtown Borders, you HAVE TO go to the downtown Powell's at least once in your life. It's absolutely HUGE. Lots of good places to eat and shop within a 5 minute walk, too.

OSC in PDX. Who woulda thunk it?

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Oh, yes, I've been to the downtown Powell's. It was on the last Hatrack outing, actually. It's a shame OSC isn't going there. He could sign that pillar they have upstairs with the signatures of all the authors who have visited.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Hey, guys. Sorry I've been MIA.

I don't mind being social director for both the day we pick up people from the airport and the day of the signing. There's plenty to do around here, I have favorite hot spots that I think everyone can appreciate.

I'm sure this has been covered, but to get it all in one post: when is everyone planning on actually being in Portland? I'm picking Nathan up from the airport - are both Annie and Hobbes coming in on the same day? Narnia - do we want to meet beforehand and pick them up together?

Those of you driving into Portland the day of the signing - do we want to meet for coffee like we did the last PDX Get-together, or simply all meet at the signing?

I can find a place to meet beforehand if that's what we wanna do. Just let me know.

(My e-mail address is dandadodge@comcast.net if you want my phone number to solidify any of the plans.)

My plane arrives On November 14th at 10:56pm. As I understand it, Annie and T are both getting in earlier the 14th but at the same time... ? [Dont Know]

I don't think anyone's going to want to wait for me, it's nice enough for Narnia to offer to come get me. [Big Grin] After that, I'm leaving Sunday 12:55pm (take off time). Then I'm going to sleep for 7 and half hours at the Indy airport until 6:00 the next morning. Self: [Laugh]

At least I'm learning a lesson from all this, don't be an idiot! [Wink] [Smile] Anyways, in between those times we should do all sorts of fun stuff!

Oh man! Work too many hours, don't check up on things and LOOK what happens! You lose your floor space!

That's okay - I can only make it for the day anyhow, since finances and timing/obligations are tightening up. However, the car ought to have been well fixed by then and spiffed up, so if anyone needs help getting to Portland or wants to carpool from the Olympia area on down, let me know!

Do we know where we are meeting? Time? Directions?

(Rubs hands together gleefully)

1) Shan, there's still floor if you need it. I hadn't forgotten about you. [Wink]

2) Hobbes, you're not sleeping in a chair. You're sleeping in an air mattress on the floor!! [Big Grin]

3) Ralphie, I think that I was going to pick up Annie at around 8pm and then...well...I had a thought. You're not that far from the airport. I could pick up Annie, we could go play at or nearby your house so we could see Nathan too, and then I could go back and get Hobbes (alone without Annie. HA! Just kidding!) What do you think of that? After that we could hang out some more or whatever.

4) I'd love to get together for some everybody time on Saturday before the signing if we could. Saturday's market will be going on, right? If anyone wants to meet in the morning, do lunch, split up in the afternoon, or just hang out until the signing? Did you have specific things you wanted to do Saturday Ralphie?

5) MoonRabbit, are you coming??? I would like to say that you're invited and that we would LOVE your input on stuff to fill up a Saturday that isn't too expensive. [Wink]

6) Hobbes, I'll probably drop you off at the airport on Sunday at around 11:30 am. That should get you through security etc. If you and Annie could email me your airline and flight numbers, I can keep tabs on your incoming flights in case they're late. k?

7) Zotto, Nato, Shigosei, Jonny and everyone else...are you guys ok with getting into the city on Saturday? Does anyone need a ride or anything else?

I'm so excited!!!! [Big Grin]

I'd definitely like to meet other OSC fans in Portland, and I could probably be talked into doing some driving, especially if anyone wants to do any Portland sightseeing or brewpubbing or whatever.

BTW, there's a new gelato shop a block west of the downtown Powell's. It's expensive, but they have at least 20 different flavors.

7) I am driving down from Seattle so I will be okay to get there. I can pick up anyone who needs a ride between Seattle and Portland. Do we have an idea of where/when we're meeting on Saturday morning?

Brewpubbing sounds good Moonrabbit, though I don't know if many of the youngsters there will be of age. It'd be more fun if there's a whole bunch of us.

Zotto, rides we can do. We can all mush into my sister and I's Toyota and have a blast. For Saturday, I was thinking that the Max would be the best bet so we wouldn't have to pay for parking. We'll chat about it when you call me. If you call me tomorrow, don't be alarmed if I don't answer. [Frown] I'm in class forever and rehearsal and all sorts of stuff until 9pm or so probably. So leave me a message with your number and I'll call you back tomorrow night.

Yeehee!!

MoonRabbit, if Frisco comes (ahem!! As he should!) he and Ralphie (maybe Shan and anyone else that's 21 or over?) would probably not be averse to brewpubbing Friday or Saturday night. The rest of us youngins and Mormons can keep busy. [Wink]

So if we're over 21 and not Mormon, we can drink, but if we're under aged or Mormon we can't... does this mean that if we're under aged and Mormon the bars will let us in? Kind of a double negative thing? [Dont Know]

Maybe us non-drinkers should go shoot craps or something. [Wink]

Well, I have a driver's license and passport, so I gather those would be my legal proofs of identity. The driver's license could also be a partial proof of legal sanity because hey, they would take away the license of a crazy person right? Emotional stability might be a bit more of a burden to prove...I've never shot or stabbed anyone, or been shot or stabbed by anyone, never been put in the hospital or put anyone in the hospital, no criminal record, no suicide attempts. Huh, I might be a bit of a boy scout!

quote:
...is there a particular "don't call me or I'll bite your head off because I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet" time?
Nope. I'm pretty easy going, bit of a morning person (but also a night owl) and I don't drink coffee or tea so I'm pretty sure any time you call and actually reach me, it'll be okay. Btw, if you call and reach the answering machine, leave a message because I almost always screen my calls.

k, got Hobbes' flight plan. Why was I thinking that you were leaving on Sunday??? I have no idea.

Here's the thing: I have school on Monday and would have a problem getting you to the airport in the middle of the day. (his flight leaves at 12:55) Annie and I had talked and she was going to spend Sunday night at her friend's house here in town and spend Monday with her just because I'd be gone all day. So!! Let's brainstorm and figure out a way that we can keep Hobbes busy Monday morning and get him to the airport on time. [Smile]

Annie, you're flying out later that afternoon and Brigette said she'd drive you to the airport...she could possibly drive you both earlier, but that means that you'd have to wait until your flight after Hobbes took off.

Plus, I'm afraid that Hobbes would think we're incredibly boring without Annie around on Sunday night...and I don't know if Hobbes would even want to stay at our house if he knew that Annie was somewhere in the same town and HE wasn't there with her. [Wink] Do you see the source of my perplexity? Do you guys have any brilliant ideas?? [Big Grin]

He's willing to trust my driving (knowing what he knows about my family and drivers, [Laugh] I'd say that's pretty brave) and if I am recalling correctly Bees and I did the drive to Portland in about 2 1/2 hours (don't worry, Jonny, I got her to, around and home from Portland in one piece, and that was with an excited, talkative 9 year old in the car, too) - this allowed time to visit my favorite rest stops on the way . . .

I remember we all met at a really cool bookstore/coffeeshop last time? Shall we do that again, if no one has other ideas?

Okay, I'll stop with the questions -

Cheerio!

It would be good to finalize plans. My parents would like to know when we need to be there. The coffeeshop was great, but can it handle the much larger group we're going to have this time? We have a lot more Jatraqueros this time, and I'm bringing my whole family, so that's an extra four people.

Well, I'm not sure if everyone wanted to hang out in a huge group all day Saturday. Maybe we could just make some plans and say, if you want to come, then you can. If not, we'll meet up for lunch or dinner or the signing or whatever. Deal? What do you think?

I'm heading up the Annie/Hobbes/Abrynne/Zotto! crew as far as I know. i.e. we'll be traveling in a pack. [Smile] We're willing to make up an itinerary (or something like it) so that those coming in from out of town can meet up and as many of us that can will be able to hang out all day.

Friday night seems like it will be:

around 8:00pm-Abrynne and I (Zotto if he wants to) will meet up with Ralphie(right?) and we'll nab Nathan and Annie at the airport. (Will Frisco be in by then?) We could then go hang out at some place nearby. I have to be back at the airport by 11pm to get Hobbes. After that, we'll probably head home.

Saturday morning, we have plans for a kick trash crepe breakfast headed up by Annie and Hobbes at my house. Anyone is invited to that as wants to come. (email me if you want directions and details.) We'll say that it'll be over and done by...oh...11am.

After that, I'm planless. [Wink] We could head downtown, eat lunch, do Saturdays market, Powell's...or we could head over to the first OSC signing in Tigard that afternoon...any other ideas on where to meet and what to do?

I'm assuming that we'll all then have dinner (it would be awesome to all do this together) and then head over to the signing. (7pm at the downtown Borders) What do you guys think?

I'm totally open to ideas and plans and we can always plan as we go. We just need solid times and places to meet so everyone can get rides and let parents know etc. True Brew might not be the best place to meet...I don't know if it would handle a big group and on Saturday's it's kind of crowded...what do you think Ralphie?

Sounds good. Would you like to meet at the airport to pick up Annie and Hobbes? We'll have to pay for parking, but it seems the easiest thing to do.

Since it seems you're housing quite a few people, Narnia, e-mail me your address and I'll find a convenient coffee house (or summin) where everyone can meet pre-signing Saturday morning.

In fact, e-mail me your phone number and I'll just call you to solidify plans. Sound okay?

I'd like to be in on lunch or dinner, depends on what kind of food people want. Todai is kind of expensive, but it's all you can eat and is located fairly close to Borders (plus my wife has a free dinner certificate). Anyone for Todai?

One thing is, I'm trying to bring all my stuff in one backpack (with some homework I'll undoubtly have to bring along [Grumble] ) so though I don't mind shopping, I wont be able to buy antyhing. In other words, if the ladies want to go out clothes shopping all Saturday I'd only come to be with Annie. [Smile]

Is there anything going on at the afternoon signing besides signing? If we're already getting our books signed in the evening, it may not be worth going. Then again, it is OSC... Anyhow, going to the Saturday market might be interesting. I'm also up for going to lunch if my family is willing to come up at that time. We could perhaps just have a social gathering at someone's house for most of the afternoon, if anyone is willing to volunteer to host that. I'm happy to do just about anything, although I'm not into clothes shopping either.

So, is anyone so hopelessly excited about meeting the Cards that you've started to think about what you're going to say?

I plan on thinking of something really really stupid to say, finally getting to the front of the line, forget what I was going to say and blurt out something even stupider. It worked the last two times. [Grumble] [Smile]

I was considering asking OSC to record an answering machine greeting for me, but I've got nothing to record it on, and I have no idea what I'd want him to say.

Shigosei, do you think I could hitch a ride with you up to Portland? I'll be back in Corvallis on Friday night and willing to go up to Portland whenever your family wants.

Hobbes, have you asked him to squish your head, yet?

No T, I haven't. If there was room (there isn't) I'd bring my pet tiger Hobbes with me and ask OSC to squish his head; now that would be cool! [Big Grin]

Oh, yes, head-squishing. How could I forget that?

Nato, I'm almost certain my family can give you a ride up to Portland on Saturday. I'll check to make certain, though.

Hobbes, fear not. I don't think any of us have a hankering to go clothes shopping. Saturday's Market is something completely different, I think you'll like it if we go. [Smile]

MoonRabbit, I had no thoughts of anything bizarre. That was Hobbes that thought of that! And he's taken. [Big Grin] I'm excited to meet you on Saturday. [Wink]

Uh, I'm not sure what to make of this line. Pretty much anything that was appropriate for me when I was 18 has been appropriate for me to watch up until my current age. Or is "all of us in our 20s" some sort of code phrase? Are you talking about 4:20? Or is it like, what's your 20 (your location)? [Big Grin] [Confused] [Wave]

The Quiet Man is an awesome movie. We have it in my dad's box set of John Wayne VHS fun. [Big Grin]

So...more plans. Ralphie, have you had any luck in finding a place to meet? I was thinking that it would be great if we could get there via the MAX, or drive FROM there and park and ride the MAX into town...or take the bus or whatever. I just don't want to have to worry about parking.

But, (brilliant idea) there's free parking at the LDS Institute on Market and 10th...that's within walking distance of pioneer courthouse and yamhill etc. If we wanted to head over to Powell's we could probably catch a streetcar or something. Now we just have to find a place that will fit all of us for when we meet. *thinks*

There will be solidified plans. SOON. [Wink]

Ralphie, we don't have to meet in Northwest. We can meet wherever you want because I think you know Portland better than I do. I just don't want to pay for parking once we get down there and want to know what you think of my above parking-avoidance ideas. We could meet at Powell's in the beginning if you wanted, and just hang out there for a while like MoonRabbit suggested. [Smile]

For dinner...well. There's the Pioneer Square food court (tacky? Well, there's lots of choices! [Wink] ) and any number of little places. The problem with little places is that we'd probably have to make a reservation if there's a group of more than 5 people (which there will be.). So, I'm still not any more help, but those are my ideas.

Fear not everyone, we'll find a spot.

Zotto, if you want to come to the airport on Friday night and hang out with people as they fly in, you've got to give me your address so Laura and I can pick you up. [Big Grin] If not, we'll swing by and get you for Saturday's festivities.

I have out-of-town guests (old college buddie from upstate NY and partner) arriving a weekend earlier than expected - either late this Friday evening or early Saturday morning.

I won't be able to join all of you for any part of the festivities. [Wall Bash]

It will be nice to see Amy again - the last time I saw her, Nathan was not yet 4 years old. Maybe I'll get a chance to sneak away to the Seattle signing.

But I'll miss you all - have a good time. [Frown]

It's a good thing I love my college pal, Amy. [Big Grin]

Just so you all know, she was a total lifesaver in college (the first time around). She was the first woman I met -at the time- breaking into the sound engineering (male-dominated)field. We had some fun, I can say! And supported each other's goals!

She also taught me quite a bit about social justice issues afetr she moved to San Francisco, post-graduation - that it goes way deeper than writing a check or being "knowledgeable". She taught me to get my hands dirty and work at helping solve problems.

So, while I am truly sorry to not join you all, I will be happy to see Amy. It's been five years. (gasp)

Jeni, I just sent you my cell number.

Jonny, I'm going to send you my address today.

Ralphie and I talked on Tuesday...we have a plan. We just don't have addresses yet. The plan is to meet at a coffee shop with a lot of seating that's a few blocks away from True Brew (where we met last time) but has more seating. This will be at about 2:00pm. Those of us at my house for crepes will just head on over there together. We just need the address from Ralphie and we'll be set.

After that, we were thinking of a Powell's trip, food, lunch, possibly split up and then meet again at the signing around 5:30 or six. That doesn't give us much time to hang out, grab lunch/dinner or whatever and get over there. It'll be fun though.

Annie and Nathan: Ralphie, me and Laura are carpooling over to the airport to get you. If you just follow the signs to the baggage claim area, grab your bags and head straight out the door, we'll be circling to pick you up. Make yourselves visible. [Big Grin]

Yeehee!! Exciting!

Looking at that time-line, I'm not sure what my family will be up for. Hubby and son are pretty much game for anything, but Rayne is a little pickier. She loves being around people, and it's the best way to keep her happy, so maybe she'll be okay being out all day. But if that doesn't work out, I may end up having to meet y'all at the signing at 5:30 then do dinner. I'll call you, Cecily, when I have a little bit more clue what I have going on.

No, but that's what Daddies are for. [Big Grin]

We bought my husband a new car today (2002 Trailblazer), so I expect that he'll be happy to do a lot of things for me in the next few days. [Smile] I am thinking that we may meet up at 2 with my whole family, then by 5:30, they'll want to go, and I can hang out and beg a ride back to Gresham from one of you guys.

In return, if anyone needs a ride to the airport on Sunday at around noon, I think we can do that. I have to fly directly out of PDX to go work in Denver for a week, and have to be there around then.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Since we're going to 2 signings, does that mean we can get 4 things signed?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

You might be able to get more than that, even. Call the bookstore(s) -- the one I was at had a policy of 4. OTOH, except for the woman who had 20! copies of Crystal City, they let people with lots of books get 'em all signed. It may have been only as long as it was just a signature they wanted. [Dont Know]

Posted by JonnyNotSoBravo (Member # 5715) on :

I think the site Narnia referred to me that told what the procedure was for these signings is that if you want a lot of stuff signed, you get a few things signed, go back to the end of the line, get a few more signed, go back to the end of the line, repeat as needed. That way if there aren't many people there you can get as many things signed as you want, or if there are a lot of people there, everybody gets something signed.

These will be the first signings I've attended at bookstores(have been to one on campus) and I'm wondering how it will change how the bookstore does business...I'm wondering what OSC will speak about at the second signing as well...

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Jonny, that's the theory. But at the signing I was at on Tuesday, the practice did not exactly follow the theory. [Dont Know] YMMV

Posted by MoonRabbit (Member # 3652) on :

Is 2:00 early enough? If the signing starts at 3, it means getting from SE to the Washington Square area in less than an hour. Ordinarily no problem, but we're talking a Saturday in November. I used to work down there, and it gets really nuts this time of year.

And the Beaverton Powell's is really small, so arriving early might not be a bad idea.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

We weren't planning actually to go to the first signing...that is at a different Powell's store all the way over on the other side of town. I think we all misunderstood...we (Ralphie and I) were planning on heading to the downtown Powell's to hang around that afternoon. (That's the big huge cool one.)

BUT! If you all want to go to both signings, than who am I to spoil that? I wouldn't mind it. If a group of people didn't want to go, they could always split up and meet at the evening signing downtown.

What do you guys think? (Ralphie?)

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

I really don't see the appeal of two signings.

I was just planning on doing the evening one.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I kind of agree with Ralphie. When I called the bookstores, I heard that he would be speaking at the Borders evening signing, so it will probably be a good one.

Votes Everyone?? Two signings or one??

We've got two votes for one signing. [Big Grin]

And of course, you can always just go to both if you want to!! Maybe we can all just hook up for dinner if the group is split up. Corvalis crew (Nato and Shigosei's fam), were you planning on doing both signings?

(Jonny, if you want my address, you'd better email me. I don't see your email addy in your profile. [Smile] )

Hobbes, you do realize that if you keep this up around me I will be forced to give you a wedgie of such magnitude that your grandchildren will be telling their grandchildren about it.

You have been warned.

I'll have to talk to Nato about it, but with this virus, I may want to go to the 7:00 signing only, no other activities. We'll have to see how I feel on Saturday.

Don't test me out under the false assumption that this makes in any way less painful. There are many forms of punishment and torture that leave the victim still capable of bearing children.

Physically.

I'm guessing a wedgie of that magnitude may prevent him from ever having children let alone grandchildren. But maybe he'll adopt! [Smile]

Personally, I just wanna spectate so I can tell my grandchildren about it and they can tell theirs! It'll be turned into a song and become more popular than "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and will be sung by firelight while awestruck listeners marvel at the tensile strength of Hobbes' underpants...

It's nearly november 15th! The game is afoot!

I'm actually going to be in Portland tomorrow night (Friday) for an Ozma concert with some friends. So I'll have a lot of Portland this weekend.

And if Shigosei's too sick to do too much, well, my family wants to see me this weekend too. I was in Corvallis for a night last weekend and managed to see none of them at all. I also need a haircut. Hopefully I can get that tomorrow or Saturday morning. I wouldn't want OSC seeing me scruffy!

So, how many of you are bringing digital cameras? I'm going to try to borrow one. And if Shigosei's too sick to do a whole lot, I'll at least want pictures of those delicious crepes.

See you soon, everybody!

Duhhh.. :brain atrophy:

Sorry, I thought everyone was intent on the Beaverton Powell's signing. Sounds like Borders is the place to be.

BTW, the gelato shop on the block W of the downtown Powell's (DP) is called Mio Gelato. $2.95 for 1 scoop, $3.95 for 2. Last time I was there they had about 20 flavors.

DP? What time?

That was timely...

Had a FRICKIN' hilarious dinner with Narnia (smooches for picking my sorry bum up!), Narn's sis, Ralphie'n'Dan, Nate and Annie. Picked up Hobbes later. He was tired.

Yes, I had to chaperone Annie and Hobbes in the backseat.

<pout> When I finished reading Crystal City online and found out there was a signing right in my back yard, I should have gotten back on this board days ago and reaquainted myself with all the local Hatrackers. I was at the Beaverton signing but would have gone to the Portland one as well, just to meet f2f with new friends. I usually don't take the time to do much Forum'ing (new word, write it down) these days, but used to be extremely active in it.

Hmmm, maybe time to reopen that part of my life?

FWIW, I believe I can say that I have read every single published book Uncle Orson has written (including both versions of Treason) except First Meetings and Rebekah.

Aw, I'm sorry that we didn't get to meet you!!! But, now we know that you're close by, we'll be sure to get us all together again soon. [Wink]

I had a really really great time yesterday and I wanted everyone to know that I am so forever going to flatten anyone I meet that thinks online friendships aren't "real." This just might be the 'friendliest' day that I've been a part of. (And that's even aside from Annie and Hobbes!! [Big Grin] [Wink] ) I learned new names for the hatrack smilies (i.e. geriatric party smilie), I learned some VERY interesting things about Nathan and his preoccupation with orange, slimming, control top tights. I learned Jonny's email address, phone number, last name, social security number, [Wink] the works! (thanks to Ralphie for hooking him up with the info!) I met cool spouses of hatrackers, like jeniwren's husband, Ralphie's husband, MoonRabbit's wife...and Shigosei and Mr. Funny's parents were really cool too. I leared that the city of Portland is absolutely gorgeous in the fall, partly because I had a someone in my back seat the whole weekend who had never experienced a 'colored-leafy-falling-chilly-blustery' fall before...and he LOVED it. Thanks Zotto!! (with an explanation point or a thwack.) [Smile]

And, obvious as it may seem to the rest of you, I learned firsthand that OSC is ridiculously personable, generous with his time, ideas, advice, humor and talent...and that he's tons of fun in general. And kacard is absolutely the cutest and most loving person I've had the privilege of meeting in the longest time.

I miss everyone already, though I'm lucky enough to have Annie and Hobbes for another day. [Smile] This was a great vacation weekend for me. More pictures to be posted soon! Thanks to MoonRabbit for the pics he posted!

I'm back!

I had a deleriously fun weekend!

What's cooler than bashing around Portland with such incredibly hip people?
Ralphie is Madam Kick in the Shorts - I love her! (and I am among the privileged few who got to meet Dan)
T Smith scored me an excellent seat and some awesome conversation on the plane
Zotto is one of the coolest Jatraqueros out there, and an art student to boot!
Johnny not so Bravo is a funny, friendly guy and it was great to meet him.
Nato and Shigosei and Mr. Funny are fabulous and I'm wishing I would have gotten a little more time to chat with them, but I was in line getting books signed. (silly!)
Jeniwren and her family are awesome - her kids are adorable, and she has the coolest blue hair ever!
Moon Rabbit is great and brought sushi and real wasabi and as luck would have it I had the worst tummyache ever and couldn't try it. [Frown] I blamed it on the fact that I didn't want wasabi breath and got a knowing look from Ralphie.

Narnia and Abrynne - I owe you guys and your family SO MUCH! These gals are great and beautifully accomodating and I love them.

And speaking of loving people...
I got to spend all weekend with my Hobbesy!
[Kiss] [Kiss] [Kiss]

Thanks to everyone for putting up with the overload of sap. We really couldn't help it though, I promise.

Well after finding this web site on Friday, going to a book signing on Saturday and meeting many many of you, I find myself with a log in a name a quasi understanding of how this bulletin board thing works.

What have you gotten me into?

If I was smart I would probably take Raphies advice and be a lurker for a while, but what would be the fun in that?

Remember I swim with sharks.

I was good meeting you all. I trust you all got home safely regardless how far you came from.

The whole weekend was one of the best I've had in a LONG while.

EVERYONE was awesome!

Hobbes and Annie were delirious with warm'n'fuzziness. It was great. Kudos, you two. [Big Grin] Narnia and her sis were the best gals ever for haulin' my butt around. Ralphie and Dan were perpetually hilarious. T Smith is disturbingly normal in person. Except for the orange tights, anyway. JohnnyNotSoBravo was tall. Really, really cool, but also very tall. Nato was awesome to hang out with, 'specially at Powell's (come back to Portland, punk! Now!) and Shigosei and Mr. Funny are related. This I did not know. Mr. Funny is so NOT a southern woman, although I DID almost mistake him for a southern MAN. Shigosei is witty and pretty, but probably too young for me and T_Smith to hit on. Jeniwren et al were SO COOL! Blue-pink hair! Moon Rabbit got pictures of me looking deeply philosophical in a sitting-on-the-john sort of way. I'll eventually forgive 'im, though, since he's a cool, laid-back dude. Crystal was great, even though she didn't hang out nearly long enough. Plus, there was, of course, the INCREDIBLE KACard, who is quite possibly the sweetest, most hyper gal in the known universe. I even scored a hug! Oh yeah, there was also that OSC guy, who's just the best author EVER. He signed some books for me and my far-away friends, and was basically the coolest guy at the signing.

COME BACK SOON, EVERYONE! Y'HEAR?

This is the story of how I met a bunch of people from the internet. Not suitable for children under 3...days. Superstation, that means you.

My family, along with Nato, made the long trip up to Portland. We arrived at the coffeeshop but found no one. Gradually, the other Jatraqueros began to arrive. At first it was just MoonRabbit and his wife, but then a torrent of highly intelligent and funny people began pouring through the door. I had already met Narnia, Laura, and Ralphie at the OMSI gathering. This time, I was honored to make the acquaintance of T_Smith, Hobbes, Annie, JonnyNotSoBravo, Zotto!, and Jeniwren, her husband, and their adorable kids.

Zotto!, Hobbes, Annie, Laura, Jonny
T_Smith, MoonRabbit, Mrs. MoonRabbit, Narnia, Zotto!

After getting to know each other, we headed for the downtown Powells. It covers an entire city block and sells both used and new books. We all made a beeline for the C shelf in the science fiction section, of course. I bought a few more books for OSC to sign. You can never have too many books.

Powells Pictures
Hey, I know the people listed in those acknowledgements!
Narnia eyes a few copies of Ender's Shadow.

After cleaning out Powells, we split up for dinner. We met at Borders at around 6 PM. There were a few chairs set up in the music section of the store. It wasn't as large an area as I thought it would be. I hoped that the small area meant a small turnout was expected, but I feared that it would simply mean a bunch of people would have to stand.

Around 6:30, the Cards showed up. There wasn't any fanfare, but the audience got pretty excited. OSC handed a bag of candy to Nato, saying, "I'm giving it to him first because he looks like he needs it." I believe he also requested that we finish the candy because otherwise he'd have to eat it. He then began signing books. What I want to know is why he signed my little brother's copy of Ender's Game "A survival guide for geniuses" and mine "A friend of Ender." At any rate, OSC is unbelievably funny. He cracked jokes with the audience as he signed books.

The little talk OSC gave was interesting, although I've seen much of that information on the website. It was delivered with plenty of humor and interaction with the audience, so I didn't mind hearing it all again.

All of us had the honor of talking with Kristine while her husband signed books. The reports of her friendliness and kindness are all understatements. I'd invite Kristine in for tea any day (don't know about that shady character she's married to though [Wink] ) We also met Crystal, who unfortunately didn't make it to the other events.

I had a great time at the Portland gathering. Meeting some really cool Jatraqueros and Scott and Kristine Card, who are amazing people, was completely worth the trip home.

I'm not sure either of my brothers would actually try to protect me from other males. Mr. Funny probably would not do anything to someone who hit on me. Just because my brothers won't beat people up doesn't mean I won't, though. Fortunately, I haven't had the sort of unwanted attention that requires physical violence. (But if I figure out who's calling me at 5 am, I have some H2SO4 for him to try...)

I even met some really cool people at the Beaverton signing, also. Oh, and Nate, now that i've posted on this side am i still going to be known as "Crystal from the other side?" [Wink]

Not quite. In order to officially make the change over and quit being from "The other side" *lightning and horses neighing* you have to preform 3 hatrack miracles.

Or just start posting over here and you'll be set.

Whichever you prefer.

Well, you're still from the other side, aren't you?

No, it's okay. I don't think anybody remembers, but I started over there too. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

In all seriousness, it was nice to meet you, even if I'm not the Nate you're talking about. That's the trouble with having a much more famous person around who shares my name. Anyways, looking forward to more pictures.

P.S. I don't think Ralphie has a double chin.

Edit: T, you just had to beat me posting didn't you? You're an addict!

3 hatrack miracles, huh? [Angst] I think I'll stick with the second option.

edit: I forgot you were both Nate, but I guess it dosn't matter which one. [Smile]

Nato, theres a difference between famous and prolific. I am not famous, just always around. Famous people actually have things to brag about. I just make things up to brag about.

Edit: Oh, come on! At least one hatrack miracle? Please?

Fine... how about we just go grab some pizza at the next meeting and we'll call it even?

Ok, pizza and it'll be even. But hey, you never know, maybe someday i'll perform a hatrack miracle. [Razz]

Crystal, if you send them to my e-mail address for foobonic I'll post your pictures for you.

Yay! More pictures!

Welcome to this side of the river. Sorry we had to leave so quickly after the signing. You'll have to tell us more about Alaska sometime (that's where you're from, right?)

Crystal, losing the "from the other side" is the easy part. Losing the "newbie" badge is tougher. Read Mr. Squicky's essential advice. Then update your will and get busy. Good luck, you'll need it!! [Evil Laugh]

Dear Friend,
I am a former genral in the Canadian Armed forces, eh, who has escaped the recent conflicts with two hundreds million dollars (Cdn) and twelve Skyhawk helicopters--I am at present sitting in one, the other eleven have been stored in Newfundland--the bombs are falling now. I need a secured bank account in a developed nation in which to deposit this money (and some safety-deposit boxes for the Skyhawks). If you will only--wjhat is that smoke coming out of the turret?--if you will, dear friend, only respond with your persoanl account number I will condider sharing 1% (Cdn) of this koney with you. That is.......200 dollars (Cdn), for only your secured bank account number (and the safety-deposit boxes)--is that oil pressure gauge correct?--then fix it you fool!, eh. I eagerly await your prompt response--Mayday!

Hooray for Abrynne posting pictures of OTHER Hatrackers, tho'!

Those are great pics. I only had one of mine come out. [Wall Bash] I'm not sure if the rest are on my mom's camera, or if they just disappeared into thin air. Either way the one that I have should be up soon and hopfully I'll find the rest.

Don't worry, Zotto! I'm also confused about the post above yours. [Confused]

Teehee!! Love the pics.

So, I mentioned in the other thread the nice man that I met in line. Dave. He's been to so many signings that OSC seemed to know him personally. [Smile] He was very nice and we struck up a friendship. He gave me one of his several copies of a funny little picture and I had it signed by Scott himself...

I think all newbies that have been burned by this topic of conversation will find this picture to be rather amusing. I thought it was pretty hilarious myself!! [Cool] Yes, I am the coolest because now I have a signed copy! (Thank you DAVE!!)

When OSC noticed us laughing about it he said "yeah, the only ones that are really worth something are the ones that Jake signed." Heehee

Crystal, eventually you won't be so surprised to see deerpark pop up in random threads to say something amusing.

Great pictures, everybody! I wish I had a camera of my own.

T, with a semi-recognizable brown jacket and renowned bottle-fondling skills, how could you not be famous?

I haven't seen that one before. Pretty cool.

Anyways, I'd better head off to bed. I've got a big rivalry football game to attend tomorrow. Quack, quack, quack.

See, my first thought when I saw the pic was cousin It because her face is totally obscured but maybe that dates me. The Ring still scares me.

Narnia - you should start a new thread about the Jake Lloyd pic if you want more exposure for it. I think we already scared most of the non Pac NW people off with the first 7 pages. Except Eddie(Lalo).

I don't understand why Eddie has this hankering for spanking T_Smith, or why Eddie wants to call him a dirty little girl while he does it...some people should just keep their fantasies private!

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Narnia, no problemo with Eddie. He's just a big goof.

Besides, just gives me more reason to slam him if the occassion should arise.

Big goof?

Oh, fine, if you don't want to take the offer seriously...

And heh. Johnny, dude, as much as T may resemble Brad Pitt, spanking him isn't high on my list of priorities. But when T does the dirty-girl thing with the bottle, it's too good a joke to pass up. You should see what I can do when you get a picture of T with a lollipop or banana.

MoonRabbit, that was awesome! And T_Smith, of course you don't remember it, MJ can interfere with memory while you're under its influence...a little like blacking out when under the influence of too much alcohol.

I'm just back from Denver, so I am late for my take on the Portland signing and how much fun it was. I'll try to get my pictures up as soon as I can find the camera.

Meeting everyone was the best! I'm sorry we were so late meeting everyone at the Fireside Lodge and I'm sad that I didn't get to hang out more. But what time we had was so much fun! The all-too-short amount of time at Powells was fantastic, though it's probably good it was a short as it was, for the sake of my wallet.

I really enjoyed having dinner with Ralphie, TSmith and JonnynotsoBravo. (Jonny, the reason the blue and purple only shows on the tips of my hair is that the colored layers are underneath. There's a whole layer underneath the top layer of uncolored hair that is bright blue and purple all the way up to the roots. I just had it colored a couple of weeks ago. [Smile] ) And I am so grateful to Ralphie for carting me home. Thanks! You were so kind, it's probably too much to say but that I think you're wonderful. [Smile] T looked *exactly* like his pictures, which shouldn't have been weird, but kinda was. What a cutie! Jonny, you're the coolest.

I got to sit next to Nato at the signing, which was great fun. And Shigosei, you are are the loveliest girl! Your parents are beyond cool -- I hope I'm as good a parent as they are when my kids get to be your age.

My regret: not getting nearly enough time with Narnia to feel like I did more than just barely meet.

Hobbes and Annie: may your romance be long and lasting and beautiful. You're a *very* cute couple. What a privilege for us that you were there!

LadyDove, I *wish* you could have been there! There are quite a few jatraqueros I'd like to meet, but you are at the top of the list.

Rivka, when I find the camera, I'll upload pictures that show off Rayne's cast a little more clearly. I made her some fleece leggings to keep her legs warm, but in a 2D picture it's hard to see that she is in a big ole cast. (Which, btw, is coming off tomorrow YAYYY!, to be replaced by a new one that will be on for 3-4 weeks.)

Thanks everyone for making the time so terrific, and for greeting my husband so warmly. We all had a good time, especially Rayne, who is a total ham and soaked up the attention like a sponge.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures!

Jeni, your children are lovely. Rayne had the cutest smile! Too bad your family couldn't make it to the OMSI trip. I'm sure they would have had fun.

As for not getting enough time with Narnia, you know what that means! Another get-together! I'd love to hang out sometime this summer.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

In celebration of my 500th post (only took me a year and a half!) I am posting in this thread because the get-together symbolizes the sort of community that keeps me here at Hatrack. I love how people see each other as more than a screenname and a few words on the page. I am constantly amazed at how much people care about someone they've never met in person. Hatrack has also become a source of learning for me. Why read the newspaper when all the important and interesting articles are posted here? I enjoy the commentary on a variety of political, social, and scientific news. And of course, there's the humor. Jatraqueros are some of the wittiest people out there.

Thanks to everyone for making the first 500 so great. May there be many more!

I was in the airport on Thanksgiving, and saw an advertisement for Washington/Idaho/Oregon and it had a picture of Crown Point (in Oregon) on it! I totally never would have recognized it if Toni and Dan hadn't driven T_Smith and I there during the get together weekend. So I'm thankful that my knowledge of great tourist spots has been expanded.

I would have asked for a boob lift, but I decided to spare him the humiliation. Guys don't ask other guys to feel their booblets. It's just not manly.

And asking for another head squish would have just been redundant.
