Alright, all you posturing photoshop people. Now is your chance to prove your mettle.
How it works:
Every Monday, I post a new photoshop challenge (this idea stolen directly, with no apologies, from somethingawful.com).
You email your submissions by midnight on Thursday night to anniesphotoshop@yahoo.com in jpg format.
I post the winners here every Phriday. OK, maybe not just the winners, maybe everybody. But the winners get a flashing banner or some other obnoxious prize.
This week's challenge is not so imaginative, mostly just technical.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Remove a person from a group photograph, convincingly rendering the background to hide the ommision. Submit both original and new photos.
Good luck, gumshoes.

Just so everyone knows, I didn't get mine done. I picked an easier image instead, which I've already sent it.
Hobbes Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
Christy was almost done with hers when something happened and her copy of Paint Shop Pro just CLOSED -- no prompt, no warning, no save.
i thought we were supposed to take someone out of a group picture and put them in a new one. I guess it's a good thing I didn't submit something.

And ah....*cough* that's not me...
Hobbes Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :
Also, in the future - it's more of a surprise when you don't link to the pictures here. Especially when there are only 2 submissions.
But be of good courage! Next week's challenge is killer and will be highly entertaining. It also leaves you a lot more technical freedom.

Paint Shop Pro7 is sort of useful, but it's tricky. I did figure out how to paste my brother's face on the Statue of Liberty. It's cute, but obviously cut and pasted. I'll have to look into getting Photoshop Elements. I'll still have to save up for it.

Hobbes Posted by Eruve Nandiriel (Member # 5677) on :
Ok, did some quick research, this is what I found:
Photoshop: from adobe-$649 (psht, heck, no)
Photoshop Elements:(2.0) from Adobe-$99.00 from Amazon-$54.99 from shopper.com-$50-98 from CDW-$48 from pricegrabber.com-$45
Posted by Eruve Nandiriel (Member # 5677) on :
I think Best Buy might have it cheaper, though. But my cookies won't let me check the website. Oh well.
Posted by Rappin' Ronnie Reagan (Member # 5626) on :
Are you using a Mac or a PC?
Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :
I paid $400 for the entire Adobe design package, which includes the professional version of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, and something else I never use.
That was through the college bookstore, though - so I don't know what the pro costs are.
By the way, the new challenge (if you can't read my stupid frickin' web page) is: The secret life of rock stars.
And it will soon be at a new location thanks to Hobbes darling.
Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
Paint Shop Pro is actually capable of doing everything you need to do for this kind of contest; I use it myself for photo editing, in fact, because I prefer the interface to the cluttered, floating-toolbar approach that Adobe uses (mainly, I think, because Adobe used to be Mac-only, and Macs users LIKE lots of crappy floating toolbars.)
The trick with PSP is that you need to use layers; when merging two images, paste the layer and perform all operations there. (I like to set the top layer slightly transparent, so I can see the background below while I work.)
Posted by Eruve Nandiriel (Member # 5677) on :
Thanks TD! I was wondering whether PSP did the same stuff. I'd feel kinda guilty buying Photoshop since my Dad got PSP especially for me to use. I'll have to work with it some more, I'm still figuring it out.
And I have a Dell. ('cept it's not mine )

Anyway... hopefully I'll have it straightened out soon. I can give you the link to the retarded page, but I'd rather not while there's a chance to save my design goddess image. If I don't get it figured out soon, though, I might just post the links to the entries themselves.

It probably is due to the format you're using when you save it. (I use Photoshop and I know that with it there are only specific file formats that will retain all the separate layer info.)

I only got the one from you, ludosti Sorry your other one got lost somewhere, or I would definitely have included it.
I should have re-sized the images before I sent them to Hobbes, but I was being a little spacy and downright forgot.

The index page is bouncing around cyberspace now, waiting to be updated, but just to give you a jumpstart on next week's competition, here it the theme;
El día de los muertos, Sci-fi style. the only requirement is that your submission somehow incorporate skeletons.
¡Buena suerte, amigos!

Only Annie has forgotten one more thing... the index page for this week's images. [EDIT: Or should I write that one Annie? In that case ]
So clicking on the link to get to these entries ain't going to do y'all no good no how.
Hmm... I appeared to have gone from Southern to Old Western, well no matter.

could we get an explanation of each weeks challenge next to the date? Some people, like me, just aren't smart enough to remember them or figure them out. Plus it would be helpful to any non participating viewer.

El Dia de los Muertos--The Day of the Dead--is on Nov. 2. It's a huge deal in Mexico and other hispanic countries. It's where the dead come back to the land of the living. There are HUGE amounts of decorations at graveyards and altars in the home, and there are paper mache and marzipan skeletons EVERYWHERE. My favortie part--el pan de muerto--dead bread. It's this really good sweetbread. My spanish teacher made some awesome dead bread.
Posted by Julie (Member # 5580) on :
I'll have to ask my spanish teacher why she doesn't make dead bread. But then, she doesn't speak spanish either so that's probably too much to ask.
Posted by Dragon (Member # 3670) on :
Your Spanish teacher dosen't speak Spanish???????? Posted by Julie (Member # 5580) on :
She speaks spanglish. She would be a much better teacher if she didn't automatically insert english words into her sentences. She also probably the only spanish teacher who will explain things in english if you ask her to. Luckily I'll get my favorite spanish teacher back again next year for spanish v.

This week's theme: (because I was pressed for time and came up with something off the top of my head)
Travel brochures for Oregon
Make them weird, make them funny, whatever works. And it doesn't have to be a brochure per say - it can be a poster/ad/etc.
And remember to have them to me by Thursday night so I can put the pages together first thing Friday morning.
Best of Luck to everyone!

This thread is about making a hatrack T-shirt. First of all, I think it is an awsome idea and second, I think it is something we could do as a contest. I mention it to you guys because we could make it a part of the Photoshop web site, open it up to anyone who wants to participate and maybe get a shirt made. I thought since we do something very similar each week this is sosmething we could do. What do you think?
