Had my first day of work. It was not so bad. I stacked milk. I work behind the scenes so I don't have to deal with... people I just have to stack milk for hours and dang is it COLD back there and I nearly got all queezy for some reason I can't figure out. It's mostly about trying to keep busy. So I tell myself stories to amuse myself.

I worked in the produce section of a grocery store for about a year, and we used to hang out with the dairy people. Milk sells very quickly, non-stop, all day. So it's a pretty hard and boring job. But hey, it's a job, right? Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Synthesia, I'm so glad you finally got a job, even if it is a boring one. I've found that listening to music helps a lot when doing drudge work, so if they'll let you bring a CD or MP3 player with you, it will make the hours go by faster. Once, my co-worker brought in a CD of the audio from an Eddie Izzard performance, and that was even better.

Syn, glad to hear you started your new job. If you're in and of a cooler all day, I reccommend layering your clothes--t-shirt, shirt, light sweater(s) or sweat-shirt(s), light jacket, heavier coat. Then take layers on and off depending on if you're cold, hot, sweating, in or out of the cooler, whatever. With layers you have more control over your body tempature then if you just wore a shirt and a coat. Layering is a trick I heard a long time ago in the Boy Scouts and recently put to good use in my land surveying job. Also consider wool socks and long-johns to keep your legs warm. It will take practice but you'll figure out how to stay comfortable. Light gloves or head-gear might help too.

I'm sore from all that lifting. Those milk crates are heavy, but hopefully I'll get buff. I sort of want to work at Pea Pod because at least there will be more people to get social with, but I seriously don't mind working alone. Can you just get a cheap walkman or something at CVS until you can afford an iPod off eBay? Or put a radio back there? I bet even CD players can be had for $20 or less nowadays....

I'm punctilious and weird about cd players and things. My discman is like a record player. the top part of it is off and yet it STILL WORKS. It's the most ridiculous thing in the world.

Apparently in my lurking, I missed the post saying you had gotten a job, so first... CONGRATS!!!
I work for a chain of grocery stores (I do computer training) and I can tell you that the money is consistent, promotions are common, and if you are starting out as a Dairy Clerk, they must think pretty highly of you to begin with. It is often one step below management at my stores.
Good Luck and stay warm. As Morbo said, layers are defintely the key.
