Sitting here with Caleb, Tabithecat, their friend Paul and Caleb's brother. Great bunch of people!
We had angelhair pasta with butter/curry sauce, sausage & onions and pumpkin cheesecake.
Plus wheat beer and some Chilean wine.
I really like Kansas City. Beautiful place.

The bad news? ...I'm sick! Hubby's sick, Son is sick...poor little 5 year old daughter is taking care of all of us. I think it's the flu.

They came, they saw, they conquered.
They are/were watching the KC Plaza Lighting Ceremony. Poor Bob. The man is just not used to this kind of weather. I hope he didn't freeze to death.
Meeting Bob and tabithecat was fabulous. We had dinner and watched Dressed To Kill (of course) and sat around and talked some. I sent some leftovers home with them so they don't starve tomorrow, though from the description above, it sounds like they probably would have made it.
Ooh, and they brought me flowers and wine and bread! I had a great time. Thanks Bob, Caleb and tabithecat for coming and making the day special. And an extra thanks to Bob for making such a long trip! I can't remember when I had such a good Thanksgiving.

Kayla, hubby & son were our wonderful hosts yesterday. Kayla is a wonderful cook by the way, so if you are ever in the area, you should invite yourself by for a great meal!
We had a really fun time. Laughed a lot. Looked at etchings. Really we did! Real etchings.
Kayla, that really was the best Thanksgiving I've had ever. It was like all the comfort of family without all the baggage of family. And I really needed it, so thank you!
After dinner (or was it supper?) Caleb, tabithecat and I did indeed go to see the lighting of lights in KC. This took place in an area called "the Plaza" which is full of Spanish/Moorish architecture. Very neat. I almost felt like I was back home in Santa Barbara. Except for the bone-chilling wind and the requirement to wear 14 layers of clothing, it was just like where I grew up.
They had a couple of opera-trained singers doing Broadway show tunes to entertain us while we waited for the randomly (ha!) selected child to throw the switch that would light the hundreds of thousands of lights in this area. Well...the singing was entertaining, but not in the way then intended. Actually, the tenor was good but the soprano was a dedicated warbler of the highest order.
The lights were in fact lit by a small child. It was really beautiful. Then we fought our way through the crowd back to where Caleb had illegally parked (after a deftly executed illegal U-turn!) (without a seatbelt.)
Anyway, we made it back to Caleb's ultra-cool apartment. Did I mention this place? Corner apt on the 10th floor in downtown KC. He can see for miles and miles from up here. It's an old building converted to lofts. Very neat. Terrazzo floors, 10 HUGE windows (six on the North side, four facing East). Teh ceilings are at least 12 feet high. Maybe more. We didn't measure.
Caleb also has the most comfortable couch in the known universe. Seriously, aliens from the planet N.Carolina have sent emissaries in hopes of studying this couch. I only hope my new couch is half as comfortable. They had to wake me up to give me the covers for the first night I was here.
By the way, apparently I snore a lot. And these walls echo. The neighbors are complaining. Sure, they don't complain about Caleb's piano playing or the electric guitar or the periodic need to raise the volume on a patch of Dream Theatre (or is it Dream Machine? Dream Garden?). No, they hate my snoring.
And who can blame them,really. It's like a bear is living here. Temporarily.
Tabithecat -- she has the best laugh I've ever heard. Seriously. What a fun and funny person!
More on Caleb's hospitality later, but this is a man who set his alarm early so that he could run out and feed the parking meter in 20 degree weather while I slept all snug in his nice warm bachelor pad. And when the meter wouldn't give him more than an hour at a time, he actually went out to feed it again! This is at dawn people. In 12 feet of snow! With packs of ravenous wolves circling about. Well, no snow and the wolves were really those little corgi dogs, but there was a Yeti. Or was it someone waiting for the bus? I couldn't tell from way up here with the windows closed. In the warmth.
Caleb's a great person!
And talented musician beyond belief!

Okay, feeling much, much better. At this point, we're suspecting it was carbon monoxide from the fireplace. Still have a bit of a headache, but nothing too serious.
I'm so very jealous, I can't stand it. I soooo wish I could have been there.

Anyway, I plan to leave here either very late tonight or very early tomorrow morning. Either way, I shall take the route that takes me through that side of Oklahoma (rather than taking the route that goes through Kansas).

I'll try NOT to have turkey, however, as it will put me to sleep behind the wheel. Tryptophan and all.
But you should cook the turkey anyway because I have no idea at what time I would be at your place anyway.
Depends on when I leave here and whether I stop on the road because of fatigue anyway.
I'm very glad you are all feeling better.
I'm very sorry that you had CO poisoning. Better get a chimney specialist out there. If your flue is that clogged up, it could be full of creosote and start a chimney fire.

Well...some minor annoyances re: the end of my trip:
1) I left a bag of (mostly) over-the-counter medications and physician samples at Caleb's. He may be able to use the antihistamines and the aspirin, but the rest of it, he probably doesn't need. Oh well.
2) I got a speeding ticket in Kansas. I was going 81 in a 65, darnit! Oh well, I was the only car on the road, except for the cop.
Now some great stuff at the end of my trip:
1) Got to meet Boon and her two wonderful kids. Boon is a very nice person and she picked the perfect restaurant (lots of local flavor!!!). The kids are great Boon!!! You & Mr. Boon are obviously great parents! You should have more!
2) I got to listen to Speaker for the Dead on cassette all the way home. What a great book. It's got to be among the best in the genre, and certainly ranks up there as one of my favorites from our friendly BB sponsor. I LOVED the author's comments at the end. So cool!
Scott, thanks for keeping me awake and entertained on the ride home. And for the opportunity to think about those weighty issues all over again!
(hey everyone, notice how I call OSC "Scott". Yeah, it's almost like he knows me or something. It's just cuz everyone who DOES know him calls him that. I felt left out.) This whole trip with Caleb it was "Scott this..." and "Scott that..." I guess it rubbed off. Just like Caleb's maniacal driving! Sheesh!
3) I am just so happy to have met Caleb, Elizabeth, Paul (their friend), Kayla & family and Boon and kids. It was a HUGE treat for me.
Caleb, you have no idea how the anticipation of this get-together helped me during the whole divorce and move (and all that stress). Actually having it happen and finding out (again) what nice people Hatrackers are was wonderful.

Bob, glad you made it home okay. I had every intention of coming home yesterday afternoon and posting a play-by-play of lunch, but when I got here, Hubby was playin' video games.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting our illustrious Bob, he's very well spoken and a pleasure to spend time with. He reminds me of a big teddy bear. He's also got some of the kindest eyes I've had the honor of meeting in a long time. Thanks again for lunch, Bob.
Next time, you'll definitely have to come to the house. I'll cook; you can go outside and play with the kiddies.
I'm officially planning an Easter thingie here in the Queendom of Boon. I'll start another thread about it in January. If any of you don't have plans, you're welcome here.
