I must finish my doctorate thesis. more than 100 pages to go...little more than two months left. But I feel so tired, and afraid to fail, and I did not touch the computer keybord for more than a week! I know that's my problem, and I should deal with it. I always was a fast writer my whole life, but now it seems that every word must be squeezed from my brain. Tsc...such a crybaby. Should go back to work.

What's the title of your thesis, Ed? (Just out of curiousity)
FG
Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :
In Portuguese: "Fernando Pessoa e Orpheu - A Poesia como Realidade"
In English: "Fernando Pessoa and Orpheu - Poetry as Reality"
Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :
That's too short. Professors are really impressed with long-winded titles.
At least, engineering professors are.

Brazilians are so whiny.
Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :
I thought about "Fernando Pessoa and Orpheu - Poetry as Reality in a world nearing dissolution". But my professor thought it was too long winded.
And we Brazilians are whiny and lazy, but we're also suntanned, good-looking and when we speak foreign languages, people say our accent is sexy Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :
Eduardo, if writing a PhD dissertation was easy, there would be a lot more PhDs running around in the world.
hang in there!

Stupid sexy foreigners.

This has turned from a "whining thread" to a "whining about Brazilians thread." I object to this, as there are much better nations to whine about than Brazil, like Cote D'Ivoire, or Monaco, if you really want to take a walk on the wild side.
Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :
What's there to whine about Monaco? I mean...the whole coutry is smaller than my city! :-)
Posted by Book (Member # 5500) on :
I have plenty against Monaco. Monaco messed with my brother's car about a month ago.
Posted by Jacare Sorridente (Member # 1906) on :
Eduardo- maybe you can use the Dilbert mission statement generator to fill up the rest of your dissertation. It has a lot of meaningful-sounding words without any actual content.
Just on a side note from the rest of the thread so far: I want to visit Brazil some day, probably after I graduate and work so I can actually afford it. Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :
Hey, thanks, Jacare! I enjoyed it very much!
And, Butterfly, you'll find things are a lot cheaper over here than on U.S. 1 dollar worths about 3 "reais" (our currency), nowadays. You can buy a big mac, a large coke and fries for about 6 reais, or 2 dollars.
Well...anyway, when I finish my thesis and become Brazil's dictator (we had not one for about 20 years! We miss a good dictator!)I'll be able to fly all Hatrack bunch over here so we can party.
Of course, as valuable americans, you'd be held hostages until someone convince Peter Jackson to film an alternate ending to LoTR trilogy where Sauron actually wins
Well...enough daydreaming. Back to work. But...you all...wait for my invitation Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :
A WHOLE lot cheaper.
You guys would LOVE Brazil. (The sexy foreigners would adore you Ralphie. You should seriously get down to Rio for some R&R.)
Posted by Book (Member # 5500) on :
Yeah! Right back atcha.
Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :
Narnia, I'm exchanging e-mails with another portuguese-speaking member of Hatrack (KarlEd), so he can practice portuguese. One round of e-mails go in portuguese, the other round in english (so I can practice my english). When we write in english, he corrects my english. When we write in portuguese, I correct him. Wanna try?
Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :
I don't speak Portuguese, but the idea of exchanging mails is cool ! Does anyone want to do it with French ?
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
I really wish I had actually learned a foreign language, rather than just remembering enough of it to pass a few classes in school. You'd think after taking seven and a half years of foreign languages that my second best language would be something other than Fortran.

Almost belongs in the Out Of Context thread, but not quite....

I learned French in high school and ancient greek in college.

I wonder if I can find an ancient greek to correspond with.

The real question is what I'm doing awake 90 minutes later, following your trail!
It's fun though. Post counts are only sort of dynamic -- kinda funny to see.
[Edit: Oh, cool! Posting a reply is apparently sufficient to kick the count current.]

I HATE AIM!!! Blech.
Or rather.... I think I hate this computer and the way it should be better than my old one but I can still run AIM well on the old one and it won't freaking load properly on this one!!!

Whine: I hate greek (not greeks, only the language). I'm beginning to hate greek mithology. Hey! I hate this computer, right now.
How como you choose a subject you dream writting about and then you find yourself hating it? Because, see...I hate my thesis right now.
Well...just needed to blow off some steam. Sorry.

When they say "two months" they actually mean "3 years and two months," at least that's what one of my history profs goes by, and he's been working on his doctorate thesis (at Harvard) for the last three years. Satyagraha
