My oldest son is applying for an Undergraduate Summer Research program up there for next summer. Even though the research sounds right up his alley, he is a little reluctant because he is VERY shy and knows NOONE in that area. I thought maybe he could look forward to it a little more if there was a chance he could meet up with others in the area that could show him around.
Although it is still tenative -- the list of who they have chosen will not be known for awhile.

It's a very nice place. I lived there a year or so ago, and visited just this week. Don't know much about the U-Dubb area in general, but I do know where all the good Thai restaurants are, which is all that really matters.

I don't live in Seattle, but I live near it. I'm not sure if I'll be home myself this summer, as I may decide to intern elsewhere. Will he actually be in the city? If not whereabouts where he be?

Yeah the UW is in downtown Seattle. Hope he gets the interniship. It's a nice city and a good school. I probably would have gone there if it weren't so close to home.

Well, it's good to know it is in downtown -- that probably means there is good public transportation and he won't need a car to get around in a strange city.
Ayelar -- probably wouldn't help unless your friend is in bioengineered materials and can help make sure he gets approved! <wink>

Seattle is a wonderful place, I love it very much. My mother lives just outside, and though I'm here at Beloit College (Wisconsin) and live in Oregon with my dad, I know it very well. Public transportation in and around Seattle is beyond awesome, in fact, as long as you're in downtown, it's free (it does cost a smidge around UW though, not much, very inexpensive. Parking is horrible, but that's because it IS a large city, and the place has plenty of hills. I love it because it doesn't feel big and ungangly like Chicago or New York, and it's completely different from any other city ever (though Portland is even prettier). I apsolutely love Seattle because there's so much wonderful stuff there, and people are generally nice, which is also very wonderful. Satyagraha

JonnyNotSoBravo goes to UW, I think.
I live about 90 miles north of the campus, and seem to be going there a lot, since Children's Hospital is very close. (My daughter has been in and out of Children's the past couple of months, but will hopefully be done long before next summer.)
I'd be happy to greet your son, though I'm not exactly close and can't say I know the area really well. But we could give him some 'family' time if that would help his transition. Sounds like it would be a great experience for him. (The internship, that is.)

Do you know Thai Tom's, and the Thaiger Room? What are the other ones? These are just the closest ones I know of.

Actually, this isn't quite true. Seattle University is downtown, but UW is in the U-District which is definitely not downtown. It is close to downtown and it does have excellent public transportation though. The UW is northwest of Lake Washington and northeast of Lake Union and directly north of downtown Seattle.
Everything BYuCnslr said was perfectly true. There is a Ride-free area in downtown Seattle, and parking does suck there.
Jeniwren is right. I do go to UW!
I would be happy to show your son around if he gets the summer internship (I think you apply for these things in the spring/March/April but maybe your particular one is different or it's just different for out of state people). There's lots to do and see here, especially if the weather is nice.
Jonny, does North Lake Tavern still serve the best pizza around there?

If it's the same place I'm thinking of, I've never tried the pizza there. I have gone to see a friend play in a band there, though. Pagliacci's generally serves up some pretty good pizza. Best pizza I ever had was in Berkeley, CA and they served this Chicago style stuffed crust pizza that was so good I was craving it for weeks afterward.

Yes - now that I look at the application more, I guess we won't know until March. But it is good to get an early start in planning anyway. He has his heart set on going, so I hope he's approved. The app says it "strongly encourages women and minorities to apply" which might mean as a white male he won't be at the top of the list....

Thanks Narnia! We haven't figured out yet how he will get there if he is accepted. He is NOT fond of flying (it isn't the flying he minds -- it's the airport security searches and crowds). I don't think the train goes from here to there (although there is one from here to LA), so I might just end up driving him up there. I have a cousin who lives in Bremerton, I think, that I haven't seen in a long time. If I end up driving up, I will certainly holler at you first! Would be great to actually meet some of the other Hatrackers.

I live north of Seattle as well. I don't know much about the U district my self. I started in Renton (south of Seattle), in a residency and then moved north for work.
Seattle is a fun place. Lots of stuff to do. The zoo is great, I love the aquarium, the museum of flight is nice but a bit pricey. If you wanna go north there is BC and Victoria. The San Juan islands are beautiful, with the chance of seeing orca's.
However, I remember being in school and doing research and stuff and there is no such thing as time to do all that stuff.
If your son is shy, the best thing to do is encourage him to do things like this. It worked for me (sort of).
Hey jeniwren, where do you live north of Seattle? I'm in Stanwood. Been here about a year. I work in Everett at Providence hospital.

I'm in Oly - about 40 minutes away on a clear freeway. I think a get-together would be fun, Narnia - maybe we can have a big 'ole welcoming party?
