I was watching Tolkien: Master of the Ring on PBS, and apparently the Beatles at one point wanted to produce a movie of LOTR cast thus:

John as Bilbo
Paul as Frodo
George as Gandalf
Ringo as Sam

For all you who have wondered how a supervisor of the cosmos could have allowed the Beatles to break up, you now have an answer.
