My freezer seems to have gone kaput -- I think. It's still cold (about refrigerator temperature, I think?), but not nearly cold enough.

I was too sick to deal with it this morning -- besides, I don't think appliance repair people work Sundays -- so I just hope some of the stuff is salvageable tomorrow. Actually, if I hadn't been recovering from the stupid flu today, I'd likely have rescued most of it earlier and stashed it in my mom's freezer, or someone's. [Grumble]

I had a problem with the fridge last year -- but then it was under warranty. Naturally, it's not any longer . . . [Cry]

Overnight, everything froze again. And I have no idea why, or whether to call a repair person. I'm pretty sure the food is all safe -- the meat was still icy yesterday, and the temperature stayed no higher than refrigerator cold throughout, as far as I can tell.

Could the vent be clogged? You know the thing on the bottom of the fridge that spits out warm air? If that was blocked you might have problems. Also is it a fridge that needs regular defrosting? I wish I could actually see your cooling coils in the back, that would give me room for an educated guess.

Not sure if I'm up to dragging a fridge out from its niche today though. Stupid flu keeps not quite going away. [Razz]

Oh, and it doesn't need regular defrosting -- I've only had it 16 months!

If you can pop the vent grate on the bottom off without too much difficulty (normally you can) take your vaccum cleaner attachment and clean out under there as much as possible. Look for puddles of water or any suspicious liquid that might not be water.

Is it possible that something in the fridge blocked the door from closing previously, and when you went in, it was removed? This could be ice that formed around the door, forcing it open, only to melt and no longer be a problem.

I suggest cooking any food in the freezer thoroughly. Rare steaks, though tasty, may become a problem now.

Dan, I don't think so -- when I first noticed things were thawing, I thought that, moved things around, made sure the freezer closed -- and a few hours later, things were more thawed.

When I gave up, THAT's when things froze. I think there's a lesson there . . . [Wink]

And yeah, there wasn't any red meat in there, but the chicken parts are going to get well cooked, for certain!
