It has occurred to me recently that discussion forums like this have an inherent bias toward half-formed arguments, illogic, and flaming.

Why? Because if you don't post FAST the topic will scroll and you will find yourself talking to someone who stopped reading 334 posts ago.

Perhaps if we think on it we can come up with a solution...

I have to really think about this one so don't expect any answers for a while. [Razz]

It seems like there should be a natural distaste for this type of argument resulting in ignoring what the poster has said. (I admit I have been in this category.) It does occur with some n00bs and trolls. But we at Hatrack are by nature arguers, most of us, and don't want to miss a chance to retaliate to a half-formed argument, because it's usually so easy to refute. Plus, if we ignore it, it makes it seem like we agreed with the person. I would suggest a "no comment" smily to be used in place of an actual answer to these types of posts, but it would get used by people who don't feel like responding to a really wellthoughtout post.

By my rambling you should realize that I don't have the answer to this. [Smile]

You're an idiot.

Simple Solution:

1. Post a blank post.

2. Edit it with a well-written argument.

Yeah, and you suck. What kind of name is Icarus anyway? C'mon, he flew too close to the sun.

What do australians know? I'm pretty sure there was some kind of study done that said 99% of upside-down people are illogical.

At least we know where the sun is.

Plus we have the *actual* teleport. We're just not telling anyone. At least, not until we know we can teleport a kangaroo and a carton of beer safely...

Behave, you guys! Save the name-calling for Scrabble.

I think the fact that your words stay and can be posted in the same thread over and over should tend to make folks more careful and selective. They can be linked to in future threads. Though when too much of that starts happening my eyes start to glaze.

But rivka, given that scrabble dictionary, Australian probably isn't even a word!

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Terrible.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Of course it isn't. [Roll Eyes] It's a proper noun!

Oh, and "jo" is an (archaic) word for "sweetheart."

I'm just glad something is taking a bit of the emphasis off the "bigot" thread.

How, precisely, did this morph into the newest incarnation of the Insult Thread?

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

I guess it was an ironical way to say that we don't usually treat each other that way. But you were kidding, weren't you ?

I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with the PATRIOT Act.

She's got a little list, she's got a little list, and they'll none of them be missed. They'll none of them be missed.

rivka -- I was tempted to use jo in games.com scrabble once, but decided the limited dictionary probably didn't have it [Smile]

[Roll Eyes] Puh-leeez!

*adds "katharina" to first of multiple copies of list*

[Addit: fugu, it does; we've been trying to figure out what it means. How do you know the word?]

Jo = coffee. As in "Cup o' jo"

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

That would be spelled "joe."

I just remember reading it somewhere. That happens a lot with me.

[Big Grin] Ditto, to be sure. I just wondered, since it seems to be very regional, and pretty uncommon.

Oh, and anyone who likes online dictionaries, this one will simultaneously search almost 1000 different ones! Cool, neh?
