We were flipping through the channels tonight, and stopped on Fox News for a moment. The newscaster was "reporting" that The Guardian had compiled a list of people they thought should fill Kerry's cabinet. They flashed up each person's photo, making snide comments about each one. This, mind you, was at 6pm, during a "real" news segment.

When it came to Secretary of Defense, they noted that the Guardian suggested Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy, already an adviser to Kerry. She's the highest ranking woman in the Army, and by all accounts a fine officer.

So what does Fox News have to say about this? "Oh great, a Martha Stewart military!"

That's it! Based purely on the fact that she's female!

I'm usually pretty disgusted with Fox (okay, always), but this just made my jaw hit the floor.

Can you be a little more specific? FOX News is a cable channel, not a show. The channel airs several different shows, featuring different people and different formats, ranging from straight newscasts to news commentary and analysis. Blaming everyone on FOX News for one person's idiotic statement is like condemning all of Hatrack because of the objectionable posts of one member.

Based on the schedule, it would have been this guy:

"Veteran newscaster John Gibson gets to the core of the most salient issues facing America today as host of FNC's hard-hitting primetime show The Big Story with John Gibson, airing Monday through Friday at 5 p.m. ET, with expert legal analysis from Judge Andrew Napolitano and in-depth field reports from correspondent Heather Nauert."

"John Gibson hosts The Big Story With John Gibson, a one-hour call-in program that provides in-depth coverage and analysis of the day's top stories.

Prior to joining Fox News in September of 2000, Gibson worked at MSNBC hosting the network’s news talk programs, including Newschat and Internight. He also served as substitute anchor for CNBC’s Rivera Live.

Before that, Gibson hosted a news program for America’s Talking. He was also a West Coast correspondent for NBC, where he provided extensive coverage of key news events, including the O.J. Simpson criminal trial, America’s involvement in Mogadishu, Somalia, and the invasion of the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas."

So by Martha Stewart, did he merely mean to be misogynistic, or is he inferring that she will be very lucky on Wall Street and the subject of an SEC investigation?

P.S. I think the word "salient" in the first paragraph is at variance with his actual list of... uh, accomplishments.

Oh, I just got the pun. But I think "fox pas" would have been better. I still don't automatically associate the word "news" with "fox".
