This is a thread where anyone who hates or has comments that are of an anti-smoking nature. If you want to vent about how much you hate smokers and smoking, and the smell, or having to see smokers, or walk by them as they smoke on their smoke breaks at work. Say it in here.
So please, now that you have this thread, please refrain from making anti-smoking comments in threads where people are discussing or asking legitimate questions about smoking.

Feel free to kill yourself, and all that. I'm just a little miffed at the percentage of bar-goers who fall into that category. Smoke adds to the ambience at a New Orleans jazz club, perhaps, but encountering it when in search of simple food and drink is annoying (but not annoying to seek out and patronize smoke-free establishments...yet).

I don't care if people smoke, but if they light up in front of me I usually grab a big chaw of Red Man and say:

I am lucky enough to not encounter tobacco smoke often, but when I do, the smoke really bothers me.
But what I *really* despise is the anti-smoking commercials. The whole "truth" ad campaign just puts my teeth on edge. It almost makes me want to start smoking just to piss those guys off.

Yes, but sometimes (often actually), the right answer to a legitimate question about smoking is going to be an anti-smoking response.

I would say that people bashing gay marriage should stay out of a thread started by gay people about how much they love their new gay marriage, yes. As to a thread started about whether or not the latest gay marriage decision is a good one, I think that's a place for the gay marriage lovers and haters to knock heads.

While I agree with your first example, I'm not sure it would happen here. That was what I was trying to get across.
How about if I started a thread about how much I loved Buffy? Some people would come in and denigrate my tv tastes, even though it was a pro- Buffy thread. And I wouldn't want to stop them.
(As an aside - a while back there was a pro-Bush thread that got hijacked into an anti-Bush discussion, while the anti-Bush thread started in response to the first thread got taken over by Bush supporters. )

I think it's all about scale. Buffy is a relatively transitory and silly topic of discussion. Smoking, on the other hand, seems to get lots of people in a big huff for no discernable reason. Yeah, it's not the best thing I can do for my body, but niether is eating pop-tarts. I still do that, though.

I never tried to smoke, and will never. Since her death, I'm quite aggressive with smokers and often feels sorry for that. But honestly... Spend just one day in an hospital in which they treat lung cancer, and then say you know what you're doing. Not before. You're right, I started this thread in response to two comments that had been made in Phantos 'cigars' thread, namely the first twocomments posted by Fitz and you.
I agree that this is a public forum, and anyone can say anything they feel like. Thats free speech, it lets you place your opinion wherever you feel like putting it. However, Phanto started that thread with the following:

To me this thread is not about discussing smoking, smokers, smoking laws, lung cancer, bad smells, cigarrette butts, or any other topic. From his post I would assume that Phanto is asking to have some questions answered. I tried to do that.
If I started a thread to ask a question I think I would appreciate it it someone helped answer that question. I'm sure that if you ever asked a question in this forum you would appreciate an answer as well. It is my belief that we should try to help each other out, not just start a diatribe in opposition of something the original poster had mentioned.
If the thread had related to the pros/cons of smoking, or to what people thought about it, or asked for any opinion, I would not have any thoughts against your posts. But Phanto just asked for information about cigars.
So, thats why I started this thread, for those who wish to debate the smoking health/smell/etc topics, and merely ask people to refrain from posting comments against smoking, when someone is merely asking a realistic question.

nope, my main arguement behind this thread is that when someone asks a real question about smoking, I simply feel that its impolite to post comments of an anti-smoking nature when someone just wants some information.

There are no legitimate questions to be discussed about smoking. Smoking is disgusting. Smoking kills you. Smoking kills the people around you. Smoking kills unborn people inside of you. These are facts. There is no room for debate, discussion, scintillating conversation, sugar coating, or whining about freedom to choose. If I was in a restaurant in a table next to yours, and every few moments I threw some Anthrax germs in the air, you'd be upset too. There is no reason to become a new smoker in 2004 other than weakness and a desire to fit in. Game over.

People can do whatever they want, because people like the freedom to choose and face it, people would smoke even if it was illegal everywhere. But I don't like to be around smoke; it makes my eyes water, I can't breath or think properly, and something that impinges on my ability to function worries me. So, obviously, I don't smoke.
