Call Wendy even if you are late!
She said to continue to call her, and she will check her availability, and if it is still low she will give you the $89 rate that is the same as the group rate. We now have 15 rooms reserved so we are doing ok.

AJ

This thread is specifically for hotel info.

The contact's name is Wendy. Her number is 847-763-3009 You have to call her to get our group rate. Tell her you want a room for Kama Con.
The contract was just faxed in. You guys had better start calling ASAP as soon as I post the number because if it goes down to the wire I'm going to be nervous. The reservation deadline is 7/15/04.

The nights are reserved for August 13th and 14th. If you wish to stay the night of the 15th you will need to tell her. The hospitality room will be reserved for that day so that people who are checking out can crash there.

Holiday Inn Skokie info:
http://www.skokie.holiday-inn.com/chisk/index.shtml

$89/night for two double beds, up to 5/room.
Parking is free.

The hospitality suite will be $50/day with 10 rooms reserved 150/day if we dont' fill 10 rooms. Free if we fill 20 rooms. It is an expense that will be shared by all as well as any catered food we have, though I realize I will probably end up the unoffical "treasurer" of this venture.

So start figuring out who is rooming with whom etc as you already have.

Don't know if that link will work. But while I knew it was close Yahoo confirmed it is exactly a 1.1 mile walk to the Metra rail station.

You will want the Milwakee District North Line, Edgebrook Station. I'll estimate fares from OHare shortly. Also there is a weekend metra pass that is cheap though it might not be valid on Friday

Sure, Kat

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

http://metrarail.com/Data/fares-2002-chart.html

This is the fair schedule. From Union Station to Edgbrook will be $2.90 because it you are going from Zone A to Zone C

From O'Hare to Union Station will be From Zone D to Zone A so it will be $3.30/person.

So it will cost $6.10 to travel to the hotel via Metra (I'm sure we will be able to run an informal service from the Metra to the hotel, and I'll attempt from O'Hare too but we need to have contingencies planned for.)

So if you have 4 people meeting at the airport at the same time, if you split a taxi fare it will actually be cheaper, and likely less hassle.

The company they reccommend is American Taxi. The flat rate from O Hare to the hotel is $22. Split among four people and you save a bit, and it will be more direct. The American Taxi phone # is 847-255-9614. You should be able to call this from O'Hare. I'm posting it now because that way I won't forget it!

The metra weekend pass with unlimited rides is $5 but only applies for Saturday and Sunday. So I'd reccommend sticking closer to the hotel and vegging more on Friday <grin>

If you feel like the metra instead of a taxi,

This is the Metra Ohare transfer Station schedue for the North Central Line abreviated NCS
http://www.metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ncs_all.shtml Apparently this line only runs on weekdays until about 4pm. You should be looking at the "Inbound" schedule since this is what will take you to Chicago.

Then you will need to take the MD-N line back to Edgebrook. http://metrarail.com/Sched/md_n/md_n.shtml#MAP

Unfortunately there are no straight lines across, you have to go into Chicago to change at Union before coming back out.

Hopefully we can do mostly a shuttle carpool service. I would reccommend arriving earlier in the day on Friday if at all possible. Friday evening traffic both on rail and car is pretty lousy.

Kewl! [Big Grin] Would that be the Hy Life (3 miles from the hotel) or Bugsy's (4 miles away)?

And Bagel Country is less than 3 miles away. D'Nali's (pizza, etc., and they have vegetarian stuff) is two-and-a-half; 3 miles to Dunkin' Donuts (the kosher one) and Mi Tsu Yun (*drool* Chinese so good I've heard about it, and I was an infant the last time I was in Chicago!)

Yeah, I don't think food will be a problem for me. [Big Grin] [Smile] [Big Grin]

Well considering I don't have the contract signed sealed and delivered yet, I would imagine next week is the earliest you can make reservations. The contract will have a date by which they release the bloc rooms if they aren't all reserved, so that would be your absolute latest deadline. However, I sincerely hope people won't wait that long because it is going to be those reservations that give us an accurate group count.

lol blackwolve, I don't know who Celia's rooming with. Is Mike/meltingsnoman coming?

Last night as I drifted off to sleep (never think about jatraqueras as you are going to sleep because I dreamed of an orgy with CT and mackillian... but that's a different story)Anyway I was trying to group some obvious people into hotel rooms.

1)-Girls room --basically full
rivka
Kama
katharina

2)-Girls room
Dkw
ElJay
Ryuko

3) Moose family room
there are four of them, I can't see them wanting to share.

4) Davidson family room... I don't know if they will be up for sharing with the baby, but my bets are if they did share with someone it would be CT and her hubby

5) Bob Scopatz's solitary "get off my lawn" curmudgeon room
6) Another Girls Room
Possible people
Banna Oj
Theca (definitely not definite though)
blacwolve?
Celia?

7)Girl's room
Farmgirl
Ivy girl
and others?

8) Boy's room
(there have to be at least 4 unattached boys involved in this.)

So we are a little short on the boys rooms side. But I'm up to 7 (now 8) rooms without too much difficulty so I'm guessing our goal of 10 is reachable.

At this point, assume Ryuko is rooming with ElJay and dkw. Whether we can invite anyone else to room with us depends at least partially on Ryuko’s mom, so will have to be on hold for a bit.

Bob is planning on getting his own room. He’s old, and thus much further from his college and slumber party days than the rest of us. [Wink]

[Wave] Sounds great! We'll probably be commuting of course. As long as we can get in the front door and have an accessible women's room available (which sounds pretty much guaranteed from the description) we'll be fine.

Ok two things, I'm sure there is going to be some sort of *activity fee* involved with this when we include the cost of the hospitality room and possible catering or other food arrangements.

I would ask that the locals who don't stay at the hotel be willing to participate in this fee as they can afford, to make it fair.

Secondly I don't know if they sent the contract today because I called in sick to work. I'll let you know on Monday.

Just got the contract. They require a $150 non-refundable deposit by May 7th on the hospitality room. I guess I'll go ahead and pay it.

The reservations for the con MUST be made by 7/15/04 and guaranteed with a credit card. The direct line to Wendy for reservations is 847-763-3009

I'm reading the fine print on the food policy and have a couple questions. I was under the impression it would be ok to bring kosher food in from outside but the fine print makes it a little more touchy but not impossible. Has a lot to do with health codes. I suspect a blind eye will be turned as long as we don't trash the room. Also we can't bring booze in from the outside to the hospitality room because they have a liquor license. I don't think libations were planned in any major sort of fashion but I think that they will need to be restricted to individual rooms if so desired.

Oh yes and we aren't allowed to use smoke or fog machines because it will mess up the delicate smoke detection system.

The fog machine is refering to the main activity room. So considering that this is hotel is located in a dense jewish population I'm sure that as long as you don't proclaim it in the streets lighting a candle in the privacy of your own room would not be a problem.

How long do they have to be lit for?

It looks like I will be able to privately order kosher food and not have to go through the hotel service. The lady that I'm currently playing phone tag with gave me a couple of names. So how many meals will we actually be in the hotel for? I'm thinking we need at least one meal of coldcuts and sandwhiches. I can bring a cheese platter from Sam's for those of us who aren't kosher.

Yes!!! They won't enforce this page of restrictions that I was faxed on the upstairs like the downstairs "big banuqet" halls for 100s of people. So I can bring in food, but I will have to bring in paper plates and stuff for us to eat off of. Sams and Costco Here I come.

Rivka is it non-kosher to eat off of paper or styrofoam plates? I can order cold cuts from a kosher place called Bagel country. I also have a couple other names if you are interested in having more food catered for you specifically.

Morning. And the good thing about being female is that I don't have an obligation to pray communally (just to pray). So I'll go if it sounds like I'll enjoy it, and not if it doesn't.

about the holiday inn food. Kids eat free. I know the holiday inn expresses have a continental breakfast, but there is a breakfast resturaunt too. so i'm not sure. Ask when you reserve your room. If not we will get someone to order krispy creme and muffins for the non doughnut eaters.

All info has been updated in the first post on pg1

Don't know how much more I'll be posting on hatrack for the next week since I'm on VACATION!!!!

Side note: Annie thinks she probably can't make it to this, and as a direct result, I will also probably not be coming. If that effects anyone's plans at all, which it probably doesn't since I was already listed as "maybe" and I don't think anyone worked out room sharing with Annie.

I don't mind sharing with Eddie, though we've apparently decided that if we start sharing beds, Nate's in mine.

Oh yes, and my proposal to room with Eddie and Nate and god knows who else is contingent on the lack of offers to room with, say, Kasie. Or Kama. Or any number of people who happen to be significantly cuter than Eddie or Nate.

Word the wise, Eddie, according to people at Kamacon, I attacked the bed, and would stand up and sleep talk. But I'm sure you can handle yourself.

?!?! How can there be no Cubs tickets left?!?! (Hopes there are still tickets available for maybe the Thursday game.) I've never been to a sold-out baseball game in my life -- I guess I didn't believe they really happened, aside from the World Series and the like.

Of course, every pro baseball game I've seen has been the San Diego Padres -- maybe that factors in....

Um, those who know and wish to save me a search, where does one (attempt to) find tickets? Thanks.

I'll talk to my local friends to find out if they know where to get cubs tickets It doesn't surpise me that the game sold out. Cubs fans are pretty rabid and it is a weekend game.

Interestingly the holiday inn hasn't charged my card for the $150 deposit yet. I just checked my bank account after a week of vacation and they had a week for it to clear. I'm wondering if they are just holding the number just in case or what. I'll call tomorrow and find out.

I don't do credit cards, so someone else'll have to make the reservation. But I'll definitely be there, as I'm chauffeuring the Guest of Honor.

We could probably fit you, Noah, me, and Eddie into a room. And BtL if he comes. I don't mind sleeping on the floor. I actually prefer it. I only sleep in my bed when my floor gets cluttered.

I also don't mind sleeping on the floor, so long as I got a pillow, I'm good.

Posted by Lalo (Member # 3772) on :

I'm not the one to be making reservations, as not only am I unsure of the time of my arrival in Chicago, I'm unsure of the certainty of the damn thing. Chicago's a long way to go by bicycle, and given that I've really done nothing to train for it, it'll be a long slow struggle once I do start.

I pass on the responsibility to you. Steal one of the credit-card numbers of an AOL customer and reserve away, young padawan.

Oh, and for my part, I'm not going to play selfless. One of the beds is mine. I'm willing to share if it comes to it, but if I'm biking all that way, a mattress is gonna feel damn nice.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Eds, it's actually pretty rude to let someone make a room reservation on your behalf -- particularly if you're calling dibs on a bed -- without also committing to it.

You're essentially saying that their money is unimportant to you.

If you're going to be at KamaCon, say so. If you aren't, say so. But if you think you will be, even if there's a possibility that you won't, you owe it to the people who think you might share their room to send them your share of the cost in advance.

Posted by Lalo (Member # 3772) on :

Hey, dude, I have no problem shouldering the burden -- I assumed that's a bit of a given, seeing how I've called the bed and all.

Unfortunately, as I have neither credit card nor knowledge of my arrival, I'm really going to have to put this on the shoulders of someone a bit more knowledgeable about their arrival time.

Would you like me to pull down my pants? I hear that's tradition with spankings.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Nate, many debit cards are on the Visa or Mastercard systems now. Of course, the drawback to using that is that they tend to take more than the amount of the room rate (against possible other charges), and refund it later. (Happened to someone at Wenchcon, neh?) But if all else fails . . . [Dont Know]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

You are all fine, upstanding young men, yes? And you understand that if I put your reservation on my credit card when I make our reservation and you do not pay me when we get there, I will hunt you down? Not to mention that you will not get your KamaCon shirts, assuming you're planning on ordering one.

If so, I will do that, but I will not be making our reservation until after I meet Ryuko's mom, which looks like it will be next week, maybe. And if y'all sound like you're flaking the week before, I can always cancel it. [Smile]

Ok, paranoia starting to kick in. It happens. So lets go ahead and figure this out soon.

ElJay, unless one of the other guys happens to be able to use a credit card to reserve the room, we might have to take you up on your offer. The rooms are about 90 bucks a night, just cause I think its better to over estimate, we'll say 3 nights. So 270 dollars, with tax.

For sure I know Frisco will be there (driving Kama), I'll be there (if something should happen, I'll still pay for the rooms), I haven't heard much from Noah, Lalo is a toss up, and Bob doesn't know yet.

So, lets get this taken care of, figure things out, and have the room reserved by next Saturday. Does that work for everyone?

*ahem* Also, the dkw-Ryuko-Mack-ElJay room will NOT have a connecting door with the T_Smith-Lalo-Frisco-Whomever room, even if I am reserving both of them. So there.

Edit: Or with the Bob_Scopatz Grumpy room. *hee*

Sounds like having a new roomie is working out well for you.

Since I'm undoubtably the member of this group with the least traditional morals, *ahem* I must say that I put the connecting door thing in there 'cause I thought it was funny. So, the room that offers me the best bribe gets the connecting door.

...which we'll keep locked from our side. [Big Grin]

Edit: New roomie part to dkw.

Now, as somebody with a significant other actually in the same state, I'm gonna go listen to some live music and enjoy this beautiful Saturday evening with my sweetheart. *wave* Have a lovely day, everyone!

I'm moving out of my apartment in a day or two, and I'll be pedalling my ass to Chicago in a week or so, so I hope you can sort this out without my express involvement.

But yeah, I'll be paying my fifth of the room, regardless of whether I actually make it or not. Only problem is, I won't be carrying cash -- I will have a credit card on hand, though, or so I hope. Will that work out?

This cruel taunting is not very attractive you know. I mean, it's nice for you that your "significant other" is so close by that you can meet at concerts and just enjoy a random Saturday. But where will it end? Next you'll be doing mundane activities like going grocery shopping, or just "popping by" to see if the herb garden is doing well. Heck, you might even drop by when he's not home just to check to see if the lights were left on or something.

Or to use his VCR to tape a show.

That's far too casual. These things need to take months of planning to be truly worthwhile. A date should require careful budgeting, transportation logistics have to be considered, and then, a series of alternatives developed. That's SERIOUS dating.

[Razz]

Okay, fine, I'm jealous. Happy? I actually thought that maybe there should be proxy dating for long distance couples, but I'm not sure that would work. You'd have to really trust the proxy. And what if he was better than the real thing??? Only a really secure person could tolerate the idea.

Although, with unlimited cell phone minutes, the absent party could listen in the whole time and make conversation while the proxy stood around paying for things.

Oh well.

Never mind.

It's just the fever talking.

[Big Grin]

I will be booking late in the game, but I will be booking. My method of paying for the reservation (a check card VISA) allows the hotel to not just put a hold on the card (as with a credit card) but some will actually take the money out immediately for at least the first night's rental. I need to get past July 5th before letting that happen.

So, I'm booking somewhat late.

Unless I need to take care of it earlier to ease AJ's panic.

Well, I'm glad somebody isn't taking the high road and just ignoring me. It takes all the fun out of it if you don't get a reaction, you know.

As far as handling the room, I don't need you to send cash in advance, just to make the commitment that you're for sure going to take care of your share there. I can make the reservation on my card, then when it's time to pay you each can just pay the hotel, with your debit card, cash, or however you want to handle it. The money doesn't need to go through me. Sound good?

Whether or not I'm there, I'm paying my share of the room -- however, given that both AJ and Hobbes are a bit dismayed at my delay in starting this damnable trip, and given that they both know a hell of a lot more about biking than I do, I'm guessing there's a strong chance that I'll never arrive at all.

So I'm putting my share of the Frisco/T_Smith/Calvinmaker room up for the taking. If nobody takes it and I don't show, I'll still pay for it -- if somebody takes it and I do show, I'll make do with either my own room (which Kama/Celia/AJ/random chicks and I will need anyway), or find a space on the floor somewhere to crash. Or, hell, find a cheaper motel or camp out nearby. Plenty of options.

There's probably going to be one more room reserved by the end of the week. Diane and I decided it made more sense to go ahead and get a room rather than have me try to do driving back and forth, being all sleep deprived. This way we both have flexibility to crash when and how much we need to.

Okay, here's my deal. I'm still definetely coming. As for the rooms, I don't have my own credit card, so I can't reserve a room on my own, besides the fact that I wouldn't feel comfortable waiting for the others in my room to pay me back their share. (Btw, if I'm missing something key here, it's probably because I haven't been keeping much track of the Kamacon threads recently. For example, I'm just assuming that to reserve a room we hae to pay for all the nights in advance.) What I CAN do though, is pay one of the other guys my share of the room and have them charge it if they have a credit card. The best way I can think of would be to pay them through paypal. If they don't have a paypal account, I imagine I could send them a check or something.

Anyways, feel free to inform me if I'm missing some key information here.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

Noah, I think ElJay reserved a room for Nate and I, and I forget who else was in on it. BtL and Lalo if they can make it, I think.

Either way, I'm sure you could room with us--five isn't too many. I like the floor.

And if you want to meet me in NYC, you can drive with Kama and I (and, hopefully, BtL) [edit: but it would probably be more fun for you to drag all the DC Hatrackers to Chicago, kicking and screaming--the more the merrier].

I don't think anyone from the D.C. area can make it.

As for NYC, I'd be more than happy to. Problem is, I'd either have to drive my car up there, meaning I'd need to leave my car up there to switch to yours, or we'd need to take my car. Transportation to NYC by train, etc. is too expensive.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

I think it would be worth the $70 (round-trip) bus ticket to NYC to save yourself 2/3 (or 3/4) of the gas costs to and from Chicago, neh?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

ElJay has not made room reservations yet, but ElJay will, for the girly-room and a boyish room, well in advance of the deadline. They don't charge your credit card for the full amount up front, they just run a hold on it, so I don't need anyone to send me money in advance. What I do need you to do is commit that you're going to pay for the room once we get there. Direct to the hotel would be my preference, it doesn't need to be paid with the credit card that reserves it.

So far T-Smith, Frisco, and Lalo have committed to doing this, although Lalo is unsure on if he'll make it. BtL doesn't know if he's coming or not, which if he'd make up his mind he could make the reservation, as he has a credit card. So, anyway, that's the story as it stands now.

Two things:

1) This is a reminder to whoever is driving to KamaCon that said they could bring an extra guitar for Papa Moose to play.

2) Is there anyone who lives in Chicago (or is driving) that can find a play pen/travel crib for us to borrow while we are there? It would be much easier if we didn't have to drag one along. My parents have one for us, so we don't need to bring one for the NY part of our trip.

Thanks!

To make it clear, right now I have already paid, out of my personal funds, the $150 for the meeting room. With our ten room minimum met that is all it is going to cost. $50x3 days= $150

If we hadn't met that 10 room minimum it would have gone up to $150/day which means I would have gotten stuck owing them $300 more on top of the $150 I've already paid.

Now I wish I had $300 extra laying around and didn't have to worry about stuff like that, but I don't. Hence the panic.

Should some people back out (i.e., cancel reservations already made), I imagine those attending can just pony up to split AnnaJo's $150 nonrefundable deposit and cancel the other conference room charges.

AnnaJo has my sympathies. It's been a murderous week all around.

Mr. Gardener isn't willing to commit to anything at this point (we may be moving; we may be working on building our house), but there's a possibility we may show up at the 11th hour. Is it okay if we just show up? Of course, if it gets to be that week and I know we're coming, I'll let y'all know. Also, are kids coming? I have a 5-year-old who'd probably love to play with other Hatrack kiddos.

I'm working very hard on Mr. Gardener. I'd like for him to meet you all. He loves strategy games and networked computer games. He also likes to have all information ahead of time. So if someone would be willing to repost the following info (so's I don't have to go hunting for it and possibly finding the wrong info), I'd appreciate it.

Where? When? How much? When due? Contingencies if we don't decide until 2 days before the Con? Kids or not? Possible activities? What "engineer-geek" type activities might be available (in other words, will he have fun)? Who's going, so that he knows which Hatrackers I always talk about will be there?

Thanks O You Wondrous Hatrackers.

Well I can say I averted a nuclear disaster today at work.

(It was only keeping the head of our nuclear department from throwing a tantrum which she is infamous for, but hey, we are cool enough to Have a nuclear department.)

While I was out saving the world before bedtime, I recieved an e-mail from an anonymous donor, saying that they would be interested in sponsoring a room for those who could not otherwise attend due to financial constraints. Teleperion and Farmgirl were mentioned specifically.

Due to its nature it might end up being a co-ed room. If there is enough interest this person will pay for room(s), but they want to know it will be used before they do so.

btw we are up to 10 rooms. I just called Wendy. And I know there are more that have yet to reserve. Now each time you reserve, we are theoretically dropping the $150 that I've already paid and I might actually get refunded. If we get up to 20 rooms (well I can dream) then our hospitality room is free.

AJ

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

AJ, you weren't thinking you're the one paying for the hospitality room by yourself, were you? No - we count heads the first night, figure out how much it is going to be, and if we owe anything for the room we split it among everyone there. You will DEFINITELY get refunded, if not by the hotel then by the KamaConners.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Definitely! In fact, if it would help relieve some of your stress, AJ, I'd be more than happy to paypal it right now. There is NO reason you should be fronting all the costs, as well as making all the arrangements!

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

No I figured we'd tally up how much I actually paid and divide it among those who are able to contribute. (Like Kama isn't allowed contribute for one) But if they start refunding me than everyone's overall contribution declines.

Rivka give me a couple of weeks to figure out the catering situation and I might take you up on your offer.

Give me another day and I'll start working out the food situation.

Would a combination of catered kosher/vegetarian and Sam's Club cold cuts be acceptable to everyone? And how many meals do you guys think I actually need to plan for? I know people want to go out to try places too.

Also are there going to be any "structured" activities or not?

AJ

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*hug* Thanks, AJ. Would it help if I made the arrangements with kosher catering places? Or have you already done most of that?

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I have a couple of names from Wendy that I know were on your approved lists as well. I think we discussed it before. I'd like to get an idea of the number of people who would choose to eat kosher or vegan, and the number of people who don't care, before I make any firm decisions.

I also think we need to decide what meals will be "in" and which ones will be "out" before making decisions as well.

AJ

I’m in favor of the “people who want structured activities are in charge of planning them†style of organization. How about we plan to hang out at the hotel on Friday, and have supper available to graze on since people will be arriving at various times. And while we’re hanging out and grazing we can make more structured plans for Saturday and Sunday if we so choose.

Yup. And I think they were the same ones that the kosher-Chicagoans I spoke to on another forum said had good food. [Smile]

I plan on eating at the hotel Friday night and Saturday lunch. If we do that as a group, great; if not, I originally had every expectation that I would be making those arrangements for just me, possibly a few others. And I would be happy to take care of the kosher/vegetarian part.

Posted by Lime (Member # 1707) on :

Eating at the hotel Friday night and Saturday lunch sound like a good idea to me. I'm in favor of getting everyone that's left together for a restaurant dinner Saturday night, if there are enough interested.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I would like to get as far away from the hotel for food as possible. There's absolutely no excuse for being within twenty minutes of Chicago and only eating at ONE of its restaurants. [Smile]

Posted by xnera (Member # 187) on :

Agreed, Tom. Though dinner Friday/lunch Saturday at the hotel sounds good, especially if everyone is going to be arriving that day.

So... where do you all want to go for pizza? We ARE going to go out for pizza sometime, right? I mean, this is CHICAGO. There's Gino's East, and Pizzeria Uno, and Connie's, and Giordano's, and a whole lot more.

I really like Uno's, and I don't get a chance to have them often due to their location (just north of the Loop), but it's a small joint and not very good for a crowd. I could call them and see if they have party facilities, though, or the ability to handle a larger crowd. Gino's is another favorite, though I've never been to the one downtown.

Oh, heck, they're ALL good! Really, I'd be happy to go to any. So I'll leave the decision up to the out-of-towners.

*hasn't had REAL pizza in months (not even from a neighborhood joint!) and is craving it mucho*

Posted by Lime (Member # 1707) on :

Heck, that works for me too. I'm up for both. Either. Ok, so I lie: eating out would probably be a better and more fun filled option.

So, in summary: eating is good, Dan like eating, friends are good, Dan like eating with friends. Now that we've got that out of the way, I'm going to go read a book.

(I have to stop trying to make simple decisions this late in a 12 hour shift. They require just enough brainpower to put my brain in neutral.)

Okay, who wants to convince Mike that he wants to come (and yes, Mike is talking about himself in the third person)? I've been waffling on it for the last couple of months I think. Here's the thing. It's a pretty good hike, and I probably will want to drive, roughly 8.5 hours. I've got plenty of vacation I can take, so that wouldn't be a problem. Here's the other thing. I'm going to be in Chicago again the following weekend for a wedding, and I'm not sure I really want to make that trip twice in such quick succession. Oh, and I've got money, so paying for a room would be no problem either. Oh, and the whole concept of cons frightens me. It's like giving in to the dark side. So. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Ah, well, I don't think I can do the whole week thing. While I do have enough vacation to swing it, it would leave my reserve fairly low and I never know when I'll need a little extra. I might take one more day and fly the second time, though I'm not sure about that. That's probably the best I can do (assuming I break down and go).

Oh, and blacwolve hit on the proper method to get me to come. Appeal to my chivalrous/ helpful nature, and I just can't resist (assuming it's possible at all) [Smile] .

How much vacation does the goverment give you per year anyway? Steve gets a heck of a lot more than I do. I'd whine more but I do like my job

I get 2 weeks-10 working days/ year I've used 7 already. One for my week in St Louis at the dog show and 2 this last week for my friends wedding. I'm going to take Friday for Kama Con. so then I'll be at 8. I wish I could take Thursday too but I just don't think it is going to happen. Those last two days have to last me until April 7th of next year, cause they reset from your hire anniversary date.

And I don't get 3 weeks until I've been with the company 6 years.

AJ

Posted by Happy Camper (Member # 5076) on :

Well, the federal government gives you 13 days per year for the first 3 years, then 19.5 (6 hours every 2 weeks as opposed to 4) for the next 12 years, then 26 after that. And that's in addition to the 13 federal holidays we get each year. It's a pretty good deal, if I do say so myself. [Smile]

OK Happy Camper, now we even have people who need Roommates. You Have to come!

The other possiblity is to combine Marek and RRR and JNSB cause I'm not sure if Telperion is actually coming.

Farmgirl are you still going to be able to make it if you aren't driving with Boon?

I promised to bring halvah, and I remembered to buy a bunch today. However, to ensure that it is still around in August, I hid it in the back of a high cupboard.

Someone please remind me to pack it next month!

We STILL have yet to reserve our room, because ken wnats to see if his AAA discount is more than the discount AJ got. Unfortunately, I need KEN to do this, and he's at camp. [Grumble]

We WILL be coming, though, even if we don't get in AJ's block.

We had 3 loaves of halvah the other day! We mixed chocolate chips in it, which David, our resident Jewish guy, said was okay, but his Indian(from the subcontinent) friend was horrified by this fact and thought we had been joking when we told her what the brown stuff was that was swirled in it.

I got half plain (vanilla) halvah and half marble. Chocolate and halvah are GOOD together.

One of the nummiest things I ever ate was fresh whole wheat bread covered in halvah spread and then chocolate spread. Sadly, while Israeli chocolate spread is carried by every kosher market I know, halvah spread doesn't seem to be.

When I asked about the AAA discount (since we'll be there for four nights), Wendy said the KamaCon rate was better.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Papa, that's typical. Usually, the AAA rate is a discount off of the rack rate. The rack rate is the rate given to anyone who walks into the hotel looking for a room (instead of calling ahead for a reservation.) So, since the rack rate is probably climbing as the summer wears on and the hotel fills up, the discount really isn't all that great. Also, typically, hotels do not give any more of a discount to negotiated rates.

I'm guessing this hotel has a pool, fitness center, and maybe a sauna or whirlpool and probably a continental breakfast. While most hotels claim these to be "complimentary"- they are not. A room in a hotel with these type of amenities will be more expensive than a hotel that just offers rooms and nothing else. During the summer (especially July and August) hotel rates are at their highest year-round. I would bet the rack rate at this hotel to be well over a hundred dollars for late August.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Oh, and the AAA rate is usually between 10-20% off of the rack rate. While nice to have when you don't have a choice, it's really not that much in the scheme of things.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Well the opposite happened at Endercon -- AAA rate was better, so it's definitely worth the ask.

I'll work on getting a bunch of party platters from Costco or Sams which shouldn't cost exorbitant amounts.

Also would anyone be interested in seeing the Chicago botanic garden? It is part of the Skokie Lagoons, and might be interesting for the outdoorsy types that don't want to be suffocated in the City.

In case there's interest, I'm beginning to check out options for da blues - there's a blues club with a good rep in nearby Evanston. A little over 6 miles and an allegedly 15 minute trip by car.

I need to research the transit options from the hotel, as there might be easy rail option to clubs or other entertainment into the city.

That being said, I'm just doing the research to give some options. I live here and don't care what we do. If it's something I want to do badly enough, I'll do it some other time. As far as I'm concerned, it's you out-of-towners that should be figuring out what your priorities are. [Smile]

I don't understand; why would going to the Art Museum count as doing "work" of any kind? Does "work" include spending money you've earned by working on other days? If so, why doesn't paying for a hotel room on that day violate the Sabbath? Is it a travel restriction -- and, if so, can you ride in someone else's car?

[ July 11, 2004, 08:58 AM: Message edited by: TomDavidson ]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

It's not that I'm working, it's that I'm causing others to work. And more that I'm spending the day recreationally instead of devoting it to God.

And I typically don't mind travelling on Sunday if it's neccessary. Buying gas and other unavoidable expenses are typically not a problem if they're truly unavoidable.

The thing about sabbath observance is that it's a pretty personal doctrine and people will interpret it very differently.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I suppose I could see the paying money thing -- although I don't understand how paying for the hotel wouldn't also be proscribed -- but why is riding in a car ungodly?

For that matter, the Art Institute's admission fee is one of those optional "donations," so you don't actually have to pay money -- and it used to be waived altogether on Saturdays, back in the day. So if you lived in the area and could walk to the Art Institute, and didn't pay the admission fee, would that be okay?

I know I'm nitpicking. I'm just trying to understand blanket proscriptions like this....

If we don't make a detour through Milwaukee to pick up any Milwalkers, the chance of Beloitering is 100%. In other words, we'd normally drive through Beloit to get to Skokie. So if you need a ride, it's no problem -- although we've booked our rooms from the 13th through the 15th, so that may be an issue for you.

Tom, "work" is a dreadful translation of melachah -- not that anyone has come up with a better on yet, to my knowledge. A decent link on the subject.

Short of an emergency threatening life or health, I cannot ride in a vehicle on Shabbos, nor can I handle money. (If I were required to pay for each day in the hotel on that day, it would indeed be a problem. Good thing they let you pay for all the days together. [Wink] ) As far as walking into the Art Institute on a day that doing so is free . . . well, I personally would not be comfortable doing so. *shrug*

I know this is completely beside any real point, and that you were makeing a joke, but I still feel compelled to say that, I doubt even if they required such payments that it would be any real problem, I'm sure you could give your share for that day to one of your room mates on the day prior. [Razz]

this may be an odd queastion, because I have the idea that Shabbat has more to do with the setting of the sun then it does the stroke of midnight, but if it is based on the time on the clock, which time zone will you celebrate it on while in chicago?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

It has nothing to do with midnight -- or with any human-invented time measurements at all. It does indeed depend on the sunset. On the Hebrew calendar, each new day begins not at midnight, but at sunset (or maybe at full dark, which is why Shabbos is not over until about an hour after sunset).

And unless there is some reason it is impossible (in the Shuttle, in the Arctic Circle), one uses the time of sunset wherever one happens to be.

Farmgirl, I'd probably take 88 to 294 N to Touhy to the hotel. I'm a big fan of 294. [Smile] When do you think you'll be getting into town? The traffic can be bad in the area around rush hour, so if you can, try to avoid traveling between, say, 3:30-6.

I am all for going to the Art Institute. Doesn't matter what day, as I do not observe any kind of Sabbath.

I did some quick poking around for fun & free things to do. Too bad we weren't getting together the weekend of the 21st/22nd, as that's when the Air & Water show is. But here are a fewn things I found. No links because I am at work and lazy/need to be quick:

Art in the Gardens: At Grant Park and other parks. Sounds like it is a combination of gardening, sculpture, and art. Pretty! Also, Grant Park is right next to the Art Institute. [Smile]

There's also the Gardens of the Magnificent Mile, which has a self-directed walking tour. We could tour and shop at the same time!

The (free!) Grant Park Music Festival continues until August 21st. Might be worth checking out.

The Buckingham Fountain Light/Water show is always fun. It takes place around 9:15, I believe. It's been a while since I've gone. Also, there are Fireworks at Navy Pier every Saturday at 10:15.

Millennium Park has its grand opening this month. I'd love to see it for the first time with y'all. [Big Grin] It's just north of Grant Park and the Museum Campus.

I did a search for some of the Architechtural (sp?) tours, because I've always wanted to go on one, but the riverboat ones are about $26. Yikes! Too expensive for my budget right now. [Frown]

edit: Oh, and the Lincoln Park Zoo is free! And just north of the Zoo is the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, which has a wonderful butterfly garden. Admission to the museum is about $8, I think.

When is everyone coming/leaving, anyway? I'm trying to decide which days I want to take off of work.

Union Station is just west of the Loop, so pretty much in the downtown area. Skokie's further west and a bit north. There is public transportation between Union Station and the hotel, but it would likely be a few transfers. I'm trying to figure it out myself, since I will be selling my car sometime in the next week. Would be happy to meet you at the train station, if you'd like.

I don't know for sure whether amtrack actually goes into Skokie. If it does I'm guessing it is on the same train tracks as the Metra, and it would be about a mile ish away from the hotel, certainly not a problem to pick up someone from there. If it goes into Chicago it probably goes into Union station, and you would have to take the metra out to skokie.

I think I am going to try to come (ya, I know, putting it off till the very very very last minute and all). And I'll go ahead and reserve a room. Unless there's just loads of space in some other rooms. Assuming I do this, I'll have some extra space if others decide to come. Oh, and I'll have a car of my own so I'll be around to shuttle after a certain time (exactly what I don't know yet).

Having another person for airport shuttling would be a huge help.

I'm thinking of calling in sick, and taking my two "points" that they chalk up every time you do, and that way getting two days of leave, Thursday and Friday instead of only one if I take a vacation day. I might even be able to get away with taking monday off too though I'll have to read the fine print again.

Okay - in the interest of trying to be helpful, and to continue with what started on page 6 of this thread, I read back through every single post and attempted to put together a room list.

This was difficult because some of you refer to each other/yourselves by real names, then screen names/ then sometimes alias', so I got really confused.

Feel free to CORRECT this list. I'm just trying to be helpful!

Rooming:

KAMA/Katharina/Rivka
.
DKW/ElJay/Ryuko/Mack
.
BannaOJ/blacwolve/celia/theca(?)
.
Moose family
.
Davidson family
.
Bob Scopatz (solo)
.
Vana & Lime
.
Psychotriad (Ken?) & kwsni/Fugu13/Becki/Cyberdan/Hobbes
.
Saxon75 & Juliette
.
sndrake & diane
.
T_Smith/Lalo/Frisco/BobtheLawyer/CalvinMaker/
.
Fugu13/PrimalCurve (or are they with the above group?)
.
xnera
.
Happy Camper / Hobbes
.
RRR/Marek/Annie/JonnyNotSoBravo
.
Farmgirl/Ivygirl/fiazko/Kasie?
.
Insanity Plea (Bernard) & Mayday
.

Ones I don't know where to put:
The Tick
cyruseh?
Noemon?

Now, what did I miss/leave out/ get wrong?

I'm posting here what I posted on the first post of this thread too:

Call Wendy even if you are late!
She said to continue to call her, and she will check her availability, and if it is still low she will give you the $89 rate that is the same as the group rate. We now have 15 rooms reserved so we are doing ok.

I've been trying to get the cheapest possible airfare, so instead of paying weekend rates, I opted to come in on Wednesday and leave on Tuesday. Having no desire to pay for extra hotel days, I planned to fly into Green Bay and stay with my grandma there.

I finally got priceline to accept my bid of $250. I got the tickets, which include two stops. I fly Missoula to Denver and then Denver to..... Chicago. And then to Green Bay, only to buy a bus ticket and come back to Chicago two days later.

We have 16 rooms reserved.

Happy Camper do you have a long last name that starts with an H (that often gets massacred I'm sure cause Wendy couldn't pronounce)? There was a shorter last name belonging to a Mike that started with an S like Sachar. And Papa Moose is Michael.

I think all of the Mikes are going to have to go by their screen names juding from the number of Mikes and Michaels that have reserved rooms alone. If someone hollers "Mike" half the room is going to turn around.

When you consider Saxy's name (which I refuse to respell cause I'm going to screw it up) came out to Sachar...

I'm going to ask Wendy for a written printout when I go visit, so I can match screen names to people. Then I can post a list here of the screen names of the main contact person for each room. Then we can cross-reference with Farmgirl's list to clear up the maximum of confusion.

You will all need to work how much you owe with the person who reserved your room. In your case I'd e-mail Happy Camper also known as "Mike-with-the-unpronouncable-German-last-name-starting-with-an-H."

There will also be a fee, I'm guessing around $10-$20 to help out with the cold cuts and munchy food and the Hospitality room costs. I'm going to get the food from Costco and Sam's for the two group meals. I have considered a bulk order of Chicago-style pizza from someplace like Lou Malnati's (they are better than Giordano's) too, but it would be a slightly pricier option, that is up to the will of the Majority. So if you have a preference let it be known!

Rivka is handling all kosher and vegan meals, so anyone who wishes to participate in that culinary experience needs to let her know and will be dealing with expenses for that with her rather than me.

$10*40 people = $400! Wow, though I could see easily spending $100+ per meal for 40 people. I'm sure it will be $10 or less if 40 people do indeed show up.

Since we are up to 46 people I think, I'm going to start my meal planning targeted for 40 since there are a few who will go with rivka's meal options. I'll estimate for 50 too so I've got an upper limit on price. Will work on that in the next week.

Don't worry Happy, I can always send you out to buy the pizza.

Let's see, though I'm sure I can find coupons the good chicago-style pizzas are around $10 each. (There is no point in coming to Chicago and eating Little Caesar's) Figure 3 people per pizza and 45 people that is $150...

Ok, pizza is sounding like a good choice for one of the group meals and the cold cuts for the other meal.

Here are my personal choices.

#1) http://www.loumalnatis.com
(and they've got a catering package that is $5.75/person) http://www.louscatering.com/louscatering_menu.pdf

#2) http://ginoseast.com
(pricier but very very good)
I can get coupons for both of these so the prices are a bit better than the website.

#3) http://www.giordanos.com
(I'd personally prefer Lou's or Gino's but I recall Annie requesting them. They aren't bad by any means!)

Holiday Inn Scouting Report

Ok I just stopped by the hotel on my lunchbreak. Wendy showed me the hospitality room, and a sample guest room and we wandered around a bit.

Overall, I think the facility is Ideal.

The Hospitality Room is great, like a giant living room. It might be a little small for 45ish people but I don't think we will have all 45 in there all the time either. There is also a bathroom complete with shower and tub as well as a full kitchen complete with refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. There is a coffee pot too but we may have to buy our own beans to brew.

The reason why I'm not too worried about the hospitality room becoming overcrowded is because there is a pretty Huge recreational area on the ground floor, this is what you can see partially in the hotel picture album. I suspect a lot more time is going to be spent down in this area than in the hospitality room. There is a badminton court in addition to the pool tables, as well as an arcade area with a surprising number of games. There is also a great kids play area with lots of toys and a playhouse and stuff for those of you traveling with youngsters.

The entire hotel is located in a pretty main shopping area. There is a Barnes and Noble half a block away and a McDonalds across the street in addition to several other nicer restraunts within a block. Two blocks away are two grocery stores, a Walmart, and Walgreens, as well as many other shopping stores, so if there is anything you need or forget there aren't a going to be lot of problems acquiring it.

There is also a huge Galyan's Sporting goods store about a block and a half away. I suspect the more athletically inclined (Mack? [Wink] ) might enjoy their indoor climbing wall.

Now, the main drawback I just found out about is that there is no continental breakfast in the mornings. I'm sorry I just kind of assumed there would be at a Holiday Inn. There is a $7 breakfast buffet in their resturaunt where kids eat free, but no free danishes etc. I figure that I can probably buy the equivalents of a continental breakfast at Costco, with muffins and danishes and milk and orange juice and the like and we can have our own mini-continental breakfasts in the Hospitality room.

It is up to you guys if you want me to do this or not. Buying in bulk, I'm sure it would be far less than $7/person. Rivka, I don't know how much more or less this will be of a problem for you, let me know if there is anything you need or that I can do for you.

The other thing, is that we are going to probably need to network together with vehicles to get everyone to and from the nearby Metra station. While it is within walking distance, I don't think a lot of people are going to want to walk, especially if it is hot.

That's it for the scouting report!

AJ

PS. Wendy is trying to keep our rooms all grouped together on two floors. One group for the King size bed people and the other for the double bed people.

AJ, you are complete doll for taking care of all of this. I'm so impressed. I'm only sad that KamaCon isn't going to be longer!

And that not everyone is coming! We'll have to set up some sort of phone taunting and pleading chain on Saturday night.

--

I've done some research for those LDS that want to go to church on Sunday. THere are two best options: 7 miles and 12 minutes away at 9:00am, and 15 miles and 30 minutes away at 2:50pm. I was going to start a thread and get opinions, but we can take care of it there. I suspect we'll plan on the 9:00 and end up tumbling into the back of the 2:50, just like last time. I haven't found a ride yet, but that can be taken care of on Saturday as well.

I DID find a Polish branch that meets at 1:00. It's about 35 minutes away, but it seemed somehow fitting for KamaCon.

AJ -- don't worry about breakfast. You shouldn't have to do any more than you already have. We are all big kids, and we can walk down to Wal-Mart and get munchies and either meet in the Hospitality room together for breakfast, or have breakfast on our own.

I think you sort of have to do it that way -- because I noticed just that small gathering at Dana's -- everyone has a different idea of when "morning" is and when "breakfast" is. It is very unusual for me to eat breakfast LATER than 6 AM.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Yes but I want to know what more people will prefer. It is a very simple and pretty inexpensive task to buy muffins and danishes at Costco at the same time I buy the cold cut platters.

I gotta ask -- if they don't have continental breakfast -- do they at least have complimentary COFFEE in the mornings? Or in the rooms?

I vote no. As long as there's stuff easily available let everyone get their own so they can get whatever they want.

Farmgirl there is also a Starbucks a block or so down if worse comes to worse.

There is a coffee pot in the hospitality room. And while I'm less than expert at making coffee I can make sure we have the fixings for it. I think there may be coffee pots in the hotel rooms too.

AJ

I *think* there is a Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Doughnuts place nearby too. I have a visual memory of it as I was driving around the area but my brain could be lying to me too.

A couple other notes. They do have internet access and wireless acess too. Don't know how much it costs though. I would imagine a local dialup for those people who actually belong to ISPs that provide local dialup numbers would be free.

And there is a TV in the hospitality room with a VCR. So if you really want to get an LotR fix you can.

I would be highly uncomfortable using a wireless router against the express wishes of the provider, and I GUARANTEE you the hotel won't permit it. As most such connections throttle their wireless bandwidth, anyway, a router connection is likely to be agonizingly slow. We can all pay the $10 a day or whatever to use the service HONESTLY, can't we?

You can just go Ad-hoc mode, unless of course the hotel has enough overlapping channels taken that nothing works, which could be the case. Perhaps a wired switch would be helpful instead.

I'm still fleshing things out but I'm hoping this will be all right. Would I need to make a donation for anything if it turns out I can make it?

Tom, Tom, Tom...

The hotel.. it doesn't care. I can assure you that none of the staff have any idea what's going on at any given moment with their wireless net access. They are not trained to handle it- no one is. It just sits there and runs. I've done all kinds of junk with ours and no one has ever called me on it- nor have I gotten any calls from our provider.

It helps that the access points, computer and mild technical support are the only things provided by Ethostream (the installer). We are the ones paying for the Frac T-1 that supplies the backbone.

Bob would have to leave Saturday night anyway, -- his flight leaves from Des Moines early Sunday afternoon. Since he's taking the entire previous week off, and will be on the road for a week the week before that, and at a conference the week before that, he needs to be in the office bright and early the Monday after KamaCon.

Rats, though I remember the dishwasher I honestly don't remember if there is a stove. I'll call Wendy and ask today. For any showering overflow if someone wants a shower NOW and has too many people fighting over the bathroom in the hotel room, there is a full shower/tub bathroom combo in the hospitality room itself.

The hotel rooms are very spacious and there would be room for people on the floor without much difficulty.

Stove Update

There isn't one in the hospitality room. I'm sure it is because of fire and health codes. So I'm sorry rivka but you will need to bring the hotplate. Besides wouldn't we have had to kosher-ize the stove so you could use it?

However there is a microwave. Is cooking with a microwave allowed in kosher cooking?

AJ

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

No biggie. [Smile] The hotplate is small and light. Kashering a stove is easier than kashering a microwave; but it can be done.

And if I do make it, you could take my spot anyway -- my brother and I will be sleeping in our car and bathing in restaurant sinks the entire way, so why break the streak?

Have fun, geek.

As far as I know I think the number is at either 15 or 16 rooms after talking to Wendy on Thursday. I don't know that we could actually get it up to 20 rooms reserved. I think how much they knock it down at that number between 10 rooms and 20 rooms probably depends on in what sort of shape we leave the room. Though logically, splitting the difference at 15 rooms we might be able to get it down to $25/day.

AJ

Posted by Richard Berg (Member # 133) on :

Just thought I'd point out that $50/day among 40+ people is a much smaller savings than the cost of additional 4-person rooms.

I've not read all 14 pages of posts, so perhaps this information has been discussed already....

Instead of taking Metra from OHare to Chicago, you're much better off taking the CTA. The Blue Line (yes we color code here) leaves from just outside Terminal 1 and is approximately a 40 minute ride to The Loop. From the loop, you'd transfer to the Purple Line which would take you to Evanston/Skokie.

Total fare, $2.00 each way (first leg 1.75, then first transfer 0.25, second transfer in under 2 hours is free, must pay for all together) instead of $6.10 via Metra.

At the moment, the CTA Trip Planner site is down so I can't get exact information, but as soon as I get in, I'll post again.... assuming of course that I don't see that I've just repeated information. =)

Richard I agree, about the room savings vs the hospitality room cost. The reason why I am personally interested in lowering the cost is because right now I've paid the entire $150 for the hospitality room out of my own pocket and I wouldn't mind $75 back. I know that I'll get reimbursed once everyone is there, but I also like minimizing my out of pocket expenses.

Goody, no one as far as I know, will be taking the Metra from O'Hare TO Chicago. I think it is a speed vs. convienence thing. We are going to be running a private shuttle service from O'Hare to Skokie with personal vehicles. The reason why I suggested that Annie take the Metra from downtown to O'Hare is because in the long run it will be a time savings. In a social situation like this with limited time, the whole point is if you have to sit around and wait it is far better to sit around socializing with friends, not lonely on a bus somewhere.

Are you considering coming Goody? We'd love to have you, and your knowledge of Chicago public transport vastly exceeds mine. I've only been in the area for two years and I still mix my color coded lines up cause I don't travel into the city that often.

I'll figure out some kind of name tag or something so people know who I am =)

Ivygirl and I are custom-making shirts (you gotta love technology these days) to wear up there to KamaCon that have our screennames on them. (Got blank t-shirts for $2 a piece at a place having a sale). Hopefully they will turn out well. More fun with PhotoShop!

Hate to put this here, but I can't seem to find the post with the info I'm looking for...

What's the story on being able to stay Sunday night? Did you say we could stay in the hospitality room? Is anyone else staying Sunday night?

I would rather leave on Monday if I can because all the buses going back to Green Bay leave in the middle of the day, and I don't want to have to cut out early.

The definite nights are Friday and Saturday. Sunday is optional and I have no idea what people decided. We have the hospitality room Friday Saturday and Sunday I don't know if that means we have to be out Monday morning or out Sunday night. I don't think it will make a huge difference if we don't trash the place and be annoying, but if we are annoying of course they'll kick us out on the dot.

Actually, I'm a little concerned about bringing things. We're on the list for a lot of board games and other entertainments, but it's occurred to me that we're going to be packing our own bags, a stroller, a carseat, and Bernard's bags -- and Bernard -- into our car. This intimidates me, since we have a Geo.

Would anyone else in the Madison/Illinois area be interested in driving our games down FOR us? [Smile] If somebody's got a vehicle with some room, we'd gladly meet up with you a few days before the event and give you the things we'd like to bring.

Self-portraiture. I'm also in some of Tom's and Jamie's photo albums, somewhere.

So. DDR. I brought it to the Hatrack Ladies' Sleepover, as I was dying to play it with other folks, but alas, we never got around to it. I brought it to the weekend at dkw's, but again, we never got around to it. To say I have been looking forward to FINALLY playing it with my fellow jatraqueros at KamaCon is an understatement.

A week and a half ago I sprained my ankle. BAD.

[Wall Bash] [Wall Bash] [Wall Bash]

The ankle is healing. It doesn't hurt much, and I can walk on it without limping, but it's still swollen, and I'm afraid to put TOO much pressure on it. All I can say is that it'd BETTER be fully healed by KamaCon, or I will be very, very upset.

AJ, even though it is a newer TV, that doesn't necessarily mean it can handle a game console. Hotel TVs can be weird like that. If I find the time, I'll call today to verify that we can hook it up okay. I know with my PSX all I need is an RCA connection; not sure what a PS2 requires, though. I *think* it can do RCA, but does it also have an S-video connector, if that is an option? Anyone? Bueller?

Posted by Zevlag (Member # 1405) on :

My PS2 doesn't do SVIDEO, just RCA.

Thanks for the pics, I knew they were somewhere.

I'm planning on bringing Settlers of Catan and the 5-6 Player expansion. Sadly I don't have Cities and Knights yet, it is so fun. I hope I can fit it in my bag, should be able to. I am not checking any luggage, just carry on.

That was my one complaint about WenchCon. I love Atlanta, and had wanted to visit the city proper, even if it was on my own one morning. I didn't realize how far we'd be from the city, though. I still had a lot of fun sitting and chatting with everyone, so I don't regret missing out on seeing the city TOO much. [Smile]

Of course KamaCon is a bit different, since I live here, and can see the city any old time. But I'd still love to see it with my fellow jatraqueros. Personally, I was planning on doing my gaming on Friday and late in the evenings, and spending most of Saturday and Sunday out of the hotel, or whatever finances allow me to do.

I would posit that the cocked head syndrome is an indication not of confusion but rather intense mental concentration or as in my case a crick in my neck. My dog cocks his head to the side when I'm trying to outwit him but he always figures out what I'm doing. See, not confusion... comprehension.

Celia - DEFINITELY. That, or I'll buy you a brand spankin-new air compressor. It saved my butt when we had a tire that started losing air on a regular basis and I was traveling long distance. It got Used, and my hubby suggested we should get you a fresh one.

There's an Indian restraunt in Chicago called "GayLord's of Chicago", I think it's in the North-West part of the city, though I don't really remember (I can find out the actual adress). It was absoltuley the best Indian food I've ever eaten, and some of the best food I've ever eaten. If anyone would be interested in Indian food (that would most likely require a drive) I'm throwing this out there. Mostly just because I have such vivid and fond memories of it. [Smile]

Er, F-girl, Richard's replaced me as regards the Frisco room. Kinda like a stunt double, only more likely to get Kama naked.

Well.

Yeah, anyway, is Jonny pretty cute? Or is it just me? You're not beating out Sean Connery or Leslie Nielsen for the when-I-go-gay list, but you're a stinking cutie anyway, baby.

Guess you'll never really know, will you? KAMA may be real (or as real as a cybernetic organism can get), but you're still in question, young man. You start off by giving us all these romantic visions of mister rugged biker, and then just punk out. You're still a figment of some phantasmagorical surreality.

And I'm getting compared with Sean Connery and Leslie Nielsen? I guess I really AM old. [Razz]

Heh, whoa, let's not go flattering ourselves, here. You're cute for a man (don't swell with too much pride, we're a hideous gender), but you just aren't anywhere near Sean Connery of Leslie Nielsen, my, sigh, true loves...

Heh, 4 rills, dude, if Leslie Nielsen proposed you, you wouldn't accept? He does wear protection!

Heh, god, that movie had me screaming (which, yeah, is disturbing to say after declaring my lust for Leslie Nielsen, I realize). I LOVE THAT MAN.

I think Zevlag DID say he called and reserved a room -- I'm just not sure who to list as with his room. So I guess we'll just leave that open and figure it all out in Chicago.

my buddies over in the investment side of the bank told me I'd better purchase my gasoline for the trip before tomorrow night.... [Angst]

Thing is -- if I hurry and buy gas before the big price rise -- it will still all be gone before I leave for Chicago at the end of the week. Yes, it's that big of a commute.

Why must the markets do this right during before our big driving weekend? [Grumble]

Farmgirl

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I think the markets do it specifically because they know it's a big driving weekend. And because, by definition, investment bankers are evil.

I DO have a room. At this point Jenny Gardener is in it with me. The Tick says "I'm all set for now. " in reply to an email I sent, so he's not with in this room.

ROTFL. I just started a load of laundry myself. I think there are enough clothes for about three loads (I'm washing Steve's too). I have no clean blue jeans. I had planned to get up this morning and be productive. Didn't happen. Got up at 10:30 after calling in sick at 8am.

Now I have to squeeze a lot more things into this afternoon and evening, but I think it will work out. I've got to pick up Nathan/T-smith in about 2 hours, and I've just realized while I said I'd be there he may or may not know what vehicle to look for. And while I've seen his pictures I don't know if I will actually recognize him.

Then I've got to drive out to Rockford to drop my dog off since he's got a dog show this weekend. (Oh yeah and Jake needs a bath before I go, but I just hit the shower and tub with mildew spray so it isn't quite as nasty.)

And while portions of the house have been decluttered, there's still cleaning like vaccuming up the dog hair so it isn't nasty and disgusting to everyone else to get done.

Oh well. I have this feeling, like I used to get with class projects, that it will all get done, I just don't know how yet.

When I was getting picked up by people I'd never seen before I took a broomstick and some bristol board on the plane with me. Armed with a pack of crayons and some tape a wrote DAN in big letters arrows pointing down and attached it to the stick. The best part was that there were all of 3 other people on the flight so it wouldn't have been that hard to pick me up. Still, I had fun doing it.

When Olivia picked me up from the airport, we used our cell phones to hone in on each other.

And then discovered were wearing identical outfits. That was hilarious - I think we were both so nervous. I know I was. The only reason I'm not crazy nervous now is because I'm refusing to think about it.

I've met people from here online before so I'm not too scared. I mean, if they didn't bother to kill me the first two times, why would they kill me now...although, this is a different group of people, and the fact that I haven't met internet psychos yet, likely increases the probability of meeting some this time. Btw, I have so told my housemates where I will be going, and they know to start the nationwide manhunt for my killers if I don't show up on time, so no funny business, okay?

And I've met Ralphie, so meeting anyone else will be anticlimactic. Although, meeting all these other famous Hatrack personalities will be pretty freaky.
