Went to the mall, and they were giving out free cones, with free ice cream in those cones. FREE! Walk in, order, walk out, no pay, FREE. I took advantage of this. I took advantage of this 3 times. Apparently, it was to get people to donate to the Ben and Jerry's Stores choice of charity, this one was someone about homeless pets. So naturally, I donated like 2 bucks.

But free ice cream!!! Nice way to end the day.

From an economic point of view, do you think they could raise more money:

A) by charging for the ice cream cones but donating 100% of what they charge to the charity

-OR-

B) by giving away the ice cream and asking for donations?

I'm not complaining about free ice cream. I'm just curious as to which strategy would net more money for the charity. Any economic majors have an idea about this?

In terms of economic efficiency, it makes more sense to give directly to the charity. But by having free ice cream days, they'll attract more people to their stores, and imprint their names with good connotations and unique twist on many people's minds -- people that will be good potential customers for quite some time to come.

Smart move.

That's what she said. [Wink] j/k.

Was this a "captive audience" affair, T? Doesn't sound like it.

I'm sorry, the fat is now clogging my eyes...

Captiave audience? Uh... there were TONS of people there.

Unforunately, all the Ben & Jerry's in my area are too far. [Frown] Not worth it to spend much-needed gas (or bus fare) just to get free ice cream.

Luckily, tomorrow is Free Scoop night at Basking Robbins, and there's one within walking distance. [Smile]

(would much prefer B&J over BR, but beggars can't be choosers)

Let's not forget those HUGE slices of carbohydrate goodness at Great Harvest Bread Co.

Wow, I *must* be tired. Reading the thread title I imagined T openining a freezer and letting a bunch of little Ben & Jerry cones into the world. O_O

[ROFL]

Did you know that ice cream is metabolised differently than simple carbs like white bread?

Which means I can eat it without getting the shakes an hour later. [Big Grin]

(I think it has to do with the lipid content...takes longer to break them down).

And I thought that T_Smith was talking about freeing Ben&Jerry from the clutches of Unilever's evil corporate takeover.

We can expect Google to go down the tubes the same way when it goes public.

I feel it is my duty to all those that might have been jealous that I am reaping what I have sown today.

I got my hopes up when I read the title.

Then they were dashed to pieces. [Cry]
