Recently, in the college newspaper, I came across the result of a survey of male college students in the UC system (University of California). It found that 30 percent of them would have sex with an unwilling partner if they thought they could get away with it.

Scary.

That is scary, but I would be interested in knowing the exact phrasing of the question.

[Eek!]
I don't think I would have sex with random fellow student at a university even if they wanted to...

Now that I think about it, I have hard time believing that statistic.

I don't.

I have a hard time believe that 3/10 of my friends would rape a woman if they thought they could get away with it. I'm not saying it couldn't be true, I just would be shocked if it was. I hope that it isn't true...

Would 3/10 of your friends lie on an insulting survey question?

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

I would defnitely believe it was true. Seriously. And I'm not one of the paranoid, "all men are out to rape me" types of girls, either.

What percentage of girls have been sexually abused? Granted, each abuser represents a small percentage of men, however, if that many girls gets abused by guys who are willing to take the chance of getting caught, I don't see 30% as being unrealistic--unfortunately. [Cry]

I want to say one out of every four women.

Ding ding ding! In other news, the New York Times website registrar has identified an unusual pocket of millionaire grandmas named "Fred" living in Tuscaloosa, AL.

I'm suprised the number isn't higher.

Are you serious, MEC?

Judgeing by most of the males I know, yes. Now, those people aren't my friends, so I may not know them completely. But based on how much I do know about them, I think that most would do it.

I'm afraid I'm going to need to see who the study was by and what the exact question and demographic they asked was before I'm buying it.

That should pretty much be the standard for buying into most stastistics.

Am I just extremely naive, or does that surprise anyone else?

I know a lot who would say they would, but saying and doing are two different questions. I question the validity of any survey that asks such an intensly personal and loaded question.

I need to get out in this town more.

I think that the most unbelievable aspect of this statistic is not that that many men would do such a thing (which also doesn't seem likely) but that that many men would admit that they would do such a thing.

Psst - there's a reason why they're your friends [Smile]
