I've been offered a kitchen job at the Hyatt in Columbus Ohio. They just want me to fill out an application to put on file.

One of the questions is how much I expect to be paid- the options are $7.00-$8.00, $8.00-$9.00, $9.00-$10.00 and $10.00+.

I have no idea what the "right" response is. I have never worked in the US and what we pay kitchen staff is much different. I'm leaning towards $8.00-$9.00.

Keep in mind that I have worked in kitchens before, I am more then half way done my education for being a chef... however, I am not the most confident person and as always, have much to learn.

Some quick opinions please? [Smile]

Can you find out what people in other kitchens are being paid? Find out the average, and go one step higher. (I think.)

Aim a bit high, they are gonna give you what they think is best anyways.

Wow! This is so regional, I hope you get someone from that area to reply to you.

Keep in mind that $5.15 is the LOWEST possible wage you can make in the U.S. (exceptions noted). But what a chef makes in Ohio will be vastly different than what they make in New York, or Florida, or Kansas, or California.

How 'bout you go to a nice restaurant (not the one you're applying at), treat yourself to dinner, and ask the chef what he makes? [Big Grin]

By the way, congrats. COlumbus is an awesome city. I may be a bit biased seeing as I grew up in Worthington (NW Columbus burb) And of course you have the Buckeyes in town. They rock.

By the way, if they have already hired you it is a good bet they already know what you wage will be. The application seems to be formality only. So in that case, write in your own...153.47 /hr [Big Grin]
