I don't know how I got on their mailing list, but every year at this time I get a lovely enrollment packet in the mail, and every year I'm tempted to join. I love big trees and wild places. Then I read the biography of Carl Pope, the Executive Director, and saw that he's also the Political Director of Zero Population Growth, and I got the feeling that I probably wouldn't agree with this guy's agenda.

I still think that money sent to a group that works to protect the wild places is a good thing. Just got to find the right group.

Try the Nature Conservancy. They buy up wild lands to preserve them. They do a lot of education and many of their preserves are open to visitors. Of course, the visitors are required to explore the areas respectfully.

Or you might try some other organizations. Do a web search and read all about them.

The Sierra Club is pretty extreme left-wing enviromentalism. Nothing wrong with that inherintly, but knowing you I really thing you'd seriously disagree with the way they used your money, go with Janny's suggestion, or find another group that's a little closer to middle and join that if you want to support nature (which is always a good thing [Smile] ).

Wasn't there a big scandal a year or so ago involving the Nature Conservancy? Something about their selling land purchased with contributor's dollars to board members for next to nothing, and the board members developing said land? I don't really recall the details, but it seems like there was something of that nature going on.

There was a big scandal involving the Nature Conservancy last year. You might want to check out this series of articles from the Washington Post detailing the allegations (registration required). From what I can tell, the Conservancy has done a pretty good job of addressing the allegations, but they're still under investigation.

Regardless, they're still a good organization and do a lot of good work, but it never hurts to be informed.
