I got hired to my current job as a programmer. I was supposed to write C code, mostly for data conversion (I wanted C++ but the guy in charge of most of the programming around here either doesn't know it or prefers C for some strange reason). Well I did that for a while but now they're running out of computer people so I've been assigned various tasks taht I have no experience (or clue) with. For the last half week or so I've been trying to install a data server despite the fact I have never dealt with servers before in my life other than ftping to them.
Now I'm supposed to help write the code (and come up with the design) for a webpage. Pretty much what I've been told is that the nacigation is supposed to look like this in terms of the mouseover dropdown menus and the cookie-crumb site navigation. I was also told I should probably try and do it with Javascript.
So I have two questions 1) I know basic JavaScript, and since I do have extensive programming background I can work with it, but my knolwedge of it's syntax doesn't really extend far beyond poping up windows or validating forms. Given that I'm allowed to spend a semi-decent amount of time training myself is it at all possible to do something like this?
2) Is there any sort of tutorial or help page to create something like what is desired?

When I was first using javascript to do drop downs and other similar tricks, I found this site very helpful:
I suggest building your site using as much CSS as you can. It's cleaner and follows web standards more closely. You can also easily create dynamic navigations and such with a lot less code.
www.alistapart.com is a good resource for this.

First hint: I have never heard of doing cookie crumbs with JavaScript. It's "easier" to do it server-side.

By the way, if you do go there and click on the entry in the menu: yes I'm aware those are giant pictures and should be sized down so it loads faster. This is all kind of testing the waters stuff and I'm going to have to re-create those pictures anyways, so I wasn't about to resize all of them now when I'd just end up having to do it again.
