In order to minimize chaos and organize transportation more effectively. Please give at least give your arrival time and appropriate airport or train station here.
Airline and flight number would be useful but if you don't feel comfortable posting it here I understand.

Driving -- but my rule is always "I'll get there when I get there" so as not to feel pressured.

However, I would be very uncomfortable arriving in Chicago at night and making my way through, so I'm sure it will be sometime in the daylight hours on Friday.

Actually Annie, though my first link wasn't working and I deleted it. The tripsweb rtachicago website does have "greyhound bus terminal" as an arrival or destination point. I think you should use that!

yes rivka it does.

Annie I looked at their routes from that site. Apparently you will be very near a Metra Blue line which takes you to O'Hare. I would take this to O'Hare and then we will pick you up from there with other jatraqureros. I hate to make Bob and Dana actually drive into the City even though they are willing because Friday traffic in Chicago is horrendous. By the time they got in to pick you up you likely could have already been at O'Hare and maybe even transported to the hotel.

I'm still kind of thinking about going and if I do I had thought about leaving my place early morning Friday and making a sweep by the midway airport around 9:30 or 10 am. I could pick up mackillian and anyone else who is around about that time. Maybe there isn't anybody else at that time.

So, uh, what's the deal with transportation? This whole time I've been assuming that Juliette and I were fending for ourselves when it came to getting from the airport to Skokie, and I was just being lazy about looking up train maps and schedules. But if someone was already planning to pick us up--that is, if someone actually wanted to pick us up--I don't want to be so rude as to disregard their hospitality. I mean, I don't mind figuring out things for myself, but I don't want to step on any toes.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Saxy i think we are running a shuttle service at least several times to and from O'Hare.

Picking a location as to where we will actually meet up in the airport (or the curb where we pick everyone up) may require advice from sndrake because even though I've been in the airport a couple of times I can't think of any true landmark to guide people by.

I think "Amtrak" would take you into Union station though I'm not positive. Looking at the maps and using the trip planner is your best bet. I really don't know downtown very well.

AJ

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

Couple of things - and I'm not real good when it comes to downtown Chicago either.

For people arriving at Greyhound or Amtrak, isn't there a Metra out to Skokie? I've forgotten how far the station might be from the hotel, but as the time gets closer, we might be able to figure out a way to ferry people from that Metra station to the hotel.

My personal preference if people are OK with this is to pick up folks at the "kiss n' fly" area of O'Hare. This is NOT the regular passenger pickup right outside of baggage - real chaos there.

To get to the "kiss n' fly," you take the O'Hare railway to the parking area (about a 6-7 minute ride). There's a designated area just for pickups there - very easy to get in and out of.

(rivka, I'll go ahead and meet you in the terminal if you want, given how early in the day it is. I'll just park and we'll take the rail out to the van.)

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

There is a CTA line out to Skokie and it is fairly close to the hotel. However given that Ohare is going to be one of the main pickup points, taking either the metra or CTA lines to OHare might be easier.

The CTA line however does not run on weekends.
What we will be using to get into the City is the Edgebrook Metra station 1.2 miles away from the hotel. If people don't want to walk a mile, then we will have some alternative shuttles going back and forth.

Metra Milwaukee District North Line- Edgebrook Station
is what you want to be looking for from Union Station in Chicago.

Here is the schedule.
http://metrarail.com/Sched/md_n/md_n.shtml#MAP
For people planning excursions to the city this is what you should be planning your timing around.

If someone else was planning on taking public transportation from either airport, the bus depot, or the train station, I could happily meet them there and travel with them. The route I am taking will put me at Midway and pretty darn close to all major Downtown transportation centers.

There's nothing unsafe about Midway; it's just not actually Midway to anything, and is actually quite out of the way from Skokie (which was at least partly selected due to its proximity to O'Hare.) So picking somebody up from Midway is in fact a major chore.

Personally, I would recommend that the people coming into Midway catch a train to Skokie; it's likely to be faster and not much more expensive, once you factor in gas over multiple trips.

celia's schedule will likely be set the tuesday of that week, which is why blacwolve's name is also on the reservation. celia is taking on no responsibilities for giving people not named hot nathan rides. celia is debating whether or not hot nathan gets a ride. she can hear jebus telling her what giving someone a ride is slang for in ireland, but ignores him.

Sndrake, how many people did you say your van can hold? I'm trying to figure out if we should pick up all 6 people coming into O'Hare between 10:30 and 1:30 at once, or if we should divide it into two trips. I feel bad for making Zevlag especially wait that long.

And I'm thinking we will see who is there at the hotel with vehicles and send one of them down to pick up Marek at Midway. Marek do you have a cell phone or anything?

I might be getting in a lot earlier if I go with the early bus. It leaves Green Bay at 3:30 am, but it's a lot more direct. But either way, I will get myself to the airport before 1:00. And I'm not averse to waiting for a bit.

IMPORTANT INFO
Everyone that is being picked up with other Jatraqueros at O'Hare is responsible for getting themselves to the "Kiss N Fly" area of the airport via the O'Hare light rail.

(If you make other arrangments because you are being picked up individually that is your own business.)

Depends on which van I take. We just bought another one yesterday so we'll be a two-van household for at least a few weeks.

The old van has only a passenger seat in front, the rest open floor space - not real comfy, but easy to fit 6 and luggage.

The "new" van (it's actually another 1989 model) has actual seating in the back - for at least 3, along with the front passenger seat. Might be a little more cramped with the luggage.

I'll go out later and do an exact seat count on the "new" van and get back to y'all later.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

My mini van is currently arranged to carry 4 passengers and 1 driver fairly comfortably with loads of room in the back for luggage. I can fit up to 7 if I put the other seat back in, but then the luggage room is significantly decreased.

My plan was to pick up Kat and use her as a stevedore (with her consent) when I go to Costco. I would *hope* we'd be done with the Costco run by noon so I could go back to the airport and we'd have two vehicles. If we were going to do a "earlier" and a "later" pickup I could do the "later" one more easily.

AJ

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I'm thinking especially for shuttling people to the Metra, maybe I ought to put the middle seat back in. Yeah 7 is a bit of a tight squeeze but it is only a 5 minute ride too.

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

I still have to check out a few things (there's a lot I don't know about this van - it came up by surprise and it cost as much in total as the lift all by itself would cost).

But it looks like there is actual seating for at least four people - maybe five if one of the seats in back swivels the way I think it might.

Plenty of room for stuff behind the seats at the back of the van. Room for a person or two and more stuff in the space that isn't seating (big open space - it's van adapted for wheelchair use.).

*Am excited - this drives much better than the "old" van - I sit up closer, and get to drive with a bent leg with my foot rather than my toes on the pedals*

Edit to add: It's also nice that it's all registered, plated and insured now! [Smile]

Possible change of plans for me.

I need to check with my supervisor/read the employee handbook, but I am thinking I am not eligible for paid vacation yet. And if this is the case... well, I don't really want to take a full day off, then. I mean, the finances are better, but still, kinda need the money.

So right now it looks like I will be coming to the hotel after work. I don't need anyone to pick me up or anything; I work downtown, so the transportation from here to the hotel is very convenient. I might see about changing my schedule a bit next week so I could get out two hours early, and get there earlier in the day.

If I work a full day on Friday, I'd be arriving around 6:00. Just in time for pizza. [Big Grin]

Important change!
Annie is now messing things up.

Grandma said "absolutely not" to me getting on the 3:30am bus. So, I shall be arriving at 3:40 pm at the station at 5800 N. Cumberland Ave. (It says it's the CTA transit building)

Seems like that should put me in a very good spot for public transportation, so to make things easy, I can just get myself on buses and the like and get to the hotel. Whatever you think works best, AJ.

And this ticket it permanent now, so I won't be changing anything else on you.

edit: Any opinions on Greyhound vs. Amtrak? Either way I have to take a bus. Greyhound goes directly into Skokie, while with Amtrak it's Chicago. The price is pretty much the same.

Heh, if that's greyhound there's not really any such thing as a time-determining ticket. Greyhound tickets are good on the same route for a long time after listed time (months), and they'll put you on before listed time often, particularly if they have room.

Tick once again, you are coming in early enough that hopping on another train to O'Hare is an option and you could take the Jatraquero shuttle from there. Or the metra line to Skokie drops off aproximately a mile away from the hotel.

If you want take the Metra to Skokie from Union Station you want to take the Milwaukee District North Line
http://metrarail.com/Sched/md_n/md_n.shtml#MAP
to the Edgebrook station.

The one-way fare is $2.90.

If you want to go to O'Hare, you need to take the North Central Line
http://www.metrarail.com/Sched/ncs/ncs.shtml#MAP and get off at the O'Hare transfer. The fare is $3.30

Not the only place. My village doesn't have Metra service on weekends, either. Not a problem for me, though, as I've never taken the Metra--the Orange line has always been more convenient for where I want to go.

Where will you be coming from, punwit? I'm taking a mix of the Blue line and buses myself, and that's from the Loop area. transitchicago.com's Trip Planner can map out a route for you. And it's cheaper than Metra would be.

My cousin lives in Schaumburg and she indicated we could catch a train into Chicago. If the trains don't service Skokie I'm gonna have to figure out something else. My wife and daughter were going to put in an appearance (at the hotel) and then head down to the miracle mile. I really don't want to drive, although I will have a vehicle because we will be driving to my cousin's house. I know my wife won't want to drive in downtown Chicago. Um... how about one more thing to worry about? Is it too late to figure out some way for us to get picked up from O'Hare on Wednesday afternoon and be dropped off there Sunday afternoon? We've determined the cost/benefit ratio of a rental car is unsatisfactory.

And pickup/dropoff will involve installing two carseats. I'm more than willing to do this, but there have to be enough seatbelts in the vehicle. Sorry for the late notice. [Blushing]

Pop, I'd recommend the train and taxi, at that point.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Yeah, if nothing else is available, that's our plan. But it'll probably have to be one of those SUV or minivan taxis. Just the double-stroller takes up a huge amount of trunk space, when it even fits in a trunk. And we're packing for a twelve day vacation rather than a weekend, so we'll have a bit more luggage anyway.

Have rental cars always been that expensive (more than the hotel room)? I honestly had no idea. Maybe because I've never rented a car. Oy vey....

--Pop

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

Unfortunately, I can't help with the Wednesday pick-up - I think the back seats all have seat belts, but it's a moot point for Wednesday. We're having work done on the vehicle we just purchased - maintenance to the air conditioning and a couple of worn, but not broken, parts replaced.

I figure we'll be able to negotiate Sunday and Monday rides over the next few days...

Or AJ will, and we'll show up when and where we're supposed to.

<insert snappy salute smiley here>

Pop, have you tried Hotwire? Because I am getting results such as $61/day for a premium car (which I think should fit y'all) and $75/day for an SUV.

Still obscene, but cheaper than the hotel . . .

Travelocity came up with an SUV from Thrifty for $61/day. (ack! plus about $50 in taxes and junk for the four days, for a total of $292 and change)

Orbitz has that same Thrifty SUV, as well as Dollar's $65/day rate for SUV and $68/day for a minivan.

[Dont Know]

Papa, I could pick you up after work that day, but it wouldn't be til around 5pm and I don't know that you want to hang out at the airport that long.

I'm not sure how much a taxi would cost for all of you. They have mini-van taxis. I'd guess that one way to the hotel would be in the $30-$40 range.

There is a phone number on the Holiday Inn page for the taxi service they reccommend. I'd go ahead and call them and see how exorbitant their rates are.

AJ

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

I called the hotel to ask if they had a shuttle service (didn't expect one, but gave it a shot). In addition to telling me they didn't, they recommended a taxi service that was $24 per ride (no person count), so that'll probably be what we do. We just gotta double-check that they have the larger vehicles. Thanks, though. You gonna swing by the hotel on Wednesday anyway, just to say hello? Because of the time change, we'll probably be up a little later than usual (though not too much later, as we'll attempt to acclimate ourselves a bit, especially since our next stop shifts us another zone in the same direction). You could give us a call. Y'know, if you want.

I lied, I've been prowling around the holiday in web page and can't find the taxi info anywhere. I think I'd call the hotel and ask.

Aside from picking Rivka up in the morning, I'm not sure what the final plans are for Friday ferryings.

AJ - do you have a handle on how these pickups need to be done and by whom? I have room for four passengers (real seating) in the van, so it's possible we might need to vehicles for the large early-afternoon pickup at O'Hare.

Also - what time should we plan on getting Rivka over to the hotel? and am I picking up somebody else in between?

I apologize if you've already done all this and I just missed it. If you could just repost whatever arrivals and driver assignments you've come up with, that would be great! [Smile]

Ok to answer questions:

FYI, I'm picking up TSmith tomorrow afternoon due to a reservation bungle, and he will be staying with me until Friday.

I'd think getting Rivka to the hotel at 9 or 10 would be about right. The Mooses will be there for sure, and other people should be starting to trickle in. There is an excellent area to sit and relax by the pool if nothing else.

I'm picking up Kat, we are running to get drinks at Costco in Niles, and then to the hotel. I would think we would be at the hotel around 11:30ish. I don't know if I'll have dropped Nathan off at the hotel before picking up Kat or if we are all going to Costco together. Depends on the moment.

sndrake, I was counting on you to make the "early noon" run, and then I would make the "late noon" run around 1pm.

I'm worried about the Midway arrivals other than Mack. Please everyone who is arriving at that airport (Richard and Marek) make sure you have a cell number of me or someone you *know* is already going to be there. I'm sure there will be enough people with vehicles to send someone but we won't know what you should be looking for vehicle or person-wise until Friday. Richard and Marek are coming in so far apart time-wise from each other that I hate to make one wait for the other, but one trip may be all we can spring. I won't know until Friday. I'm sorry.

Tick says he can make his own way. I'm hoping he has cell numbers as well, though just in case.

For Annie I'm guessing we will send Hobbes along with someone else if Hobbes has actually arrived by 3pm.

Bob and Dana volunteered for a pickup, and I'm uncertain as to whether I should send them on a "midway" run or the "annie" run.

I figure it will all work out in the chaos.

I need to know where to go, where to be and who to meet when on Friday. I.E. I get off the plane and start heading where? If someone could email me (josh at zevlag dot com) just so I don't miss it that would be cool.

My cell is 801.628.9627 I will be available on that after I land in Chicago.

ACK - I am not reading this stuff correctly at all.

SAX - forget my email - it looks like AJ is picking you up.

Zevlag and JNSB - looks like you're stuck with me. [Wink]

I don't have a cell phone, but you can leave a message or talk to Diane at the office (708-209-1500). I'm planning on making a stop at the office on the way to pick you up and then another brief detour to pick Diane up there on our way back from the airport to the hotel.

EDIT TO ADD: Zev, you need to make your way to the airport railway (free) and take it out to the parking area. There's a kiss n' fly area where you can drive in and pick people up. I'll be coming by at 1 pm or so. I have a big old full sized chevy conversion van, with disability stickers all over the side doors (overkill on the part of the previous owner).

Me - short middle-aged hobitty-type with graying beard and hair. Probly wear some kind of disability-related tshirt, about getting out the vote or something like that. Or maybe my "short people" tshirt. Decisions, decisions...

1) Should I be making my way to this area as well?
2) What color is your van?
3) Should I address you as the drakester?
4) Let me know if there's anything you need to know from me. I already posted my flight info, so you might check online to see if the flights (mine and Josh's) have come in before you rush off to the airport. I will be checking one bag, and so will trot off to the baggage claim first thing, then off to wherever you want me to be.

JNSB,

Sorry, yes, please do the same thing as Zevlag. If it doesn't seem obvious, just ask O'Hare info people about getting to the rail and the kiss n' fly area.

I answer to Stephen, Steve, sndrake, or almost any variation on "Drake" - I'm really shaky on people's real names (don't think I'm the only one) and we can start the process of tying RL names to screen names right then and there.

The van is blue - and kinda rusty looking.

I'll hunt for the flight info you posted (and Zevlag's too) and check the flights when I go to the office after dropping Rivka off at the hotel.

If one of you is on time and the other is very delayed, I'll come at the sceduled time and we'll figure out how to cover the ride for the other person (although AJ is going out to O'Hare later - that might be one option. Or I could go back would be another.)

We'll get it covered one way or another.

See ya tomorrow! And you can remind me what your own RL name or preferred nick is. [Smile]

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

RRR,

I assume that the schedule is what we are going to go by.

It's possible flight delays could force some rescheduling - but we'll just have to figure out how to deal with those when and if they happen.

Marek and Richard Berg: my aunt says it's an easy airport to get around in. Just tell me what airline and I'll drive to that pickup spot. My cell phone is 574-532-3071 and I never ever ever leave it on for phone calls, but I will tomorrow, so you can call me if we can't find each other.

My car is a gold camry solara. That means it is a camry with two doors and it is the most beautiful gold color you've ever seen on a car [Smile]

My aunt says I have to keep the car moving, I can't just park and wait so if you see my gold camry driving off, don't worry, I'll be coming back around.

Richard, if I don't hear from you before I leave at 9 am...then I probably won't leave till noon and you'll have to wait till 3 to be picked up. And I'll just be looking for Marek at Southwest until I hear otherwise.
