(yes there is a swimming pool http://www.skokie.holiday-inn.com/chisk/photo_06.html)

Or, things AJ needs to do before Kama Con

0) Lose ten pounds so I'm not ashamed to be in a bathing suit at Kama Con

Last week:
1) Go over and check out facilities.(check)
2) Post report on facilities to hatrack, including final pricing on hospitality room. (people still reserving but I should call Wendy today)

This Week:
3) Find Pizza coupons (I have a couple of people here at work keeping their eyes out for me)
4) Check out cost of cold cuts platters at Costco and Sams

Kama Con Week
5) Pre-order Pizza and coldcuts (wednesday deadline on pizza order)
6) Finalize airport pickup schedules (doing fairly well at this)
7) Get my own crap together and pack (will be last minute knowing me)

Anything I'm forgetting, that you guys can think of?

AJ

Where along the line did KamaCon start being Kama Con (two words?)

I agree with your #0 -- I really wish I could drop weight before then. But probably not going to happen -- especially since someone just brought four dozen Krispy Kremes to work this morning...

[Smile] It's not a matter of making me happy. I really don't count. I had just noticed it on several threads -- whereas the original threads, and the tee-shirts, have it all one word....

edit: okay, maybe not on the original threads..

0) Hah! I get out of this one by not owning a bathing suit. I'm over-weight though so if I did own one then I'd be with you on that. [Smile]

1) Buy AJ a present
2) Get to Indiana
3) Figure out what the heck I'm bringing
4) That's about it

You can lose ten pounds, but since you'll be eating nothing but bad junk food at the Con, you'll put the weight back in spades, which will make it even harder to get off later if you so choose.

Better to just stay as you are and keep the weight evenly balanced. [Big Grin]

The Engineers Club Lounge where I used to go to school, used to have several signs promeninetly posted around the pool table.

"NO SEX ON THE FELT"

Of course if people hadn't got caught, the sign would have never been necessary...

Wow--three people here don't know how to swim? Knowing how to swim is just something that I've always taken for granted (although I nearly drowned in a lake when I was about 3). You guys should really let AJ teach you; it's incredibly fun, and great exercise.

Kama, is it common for people in Poland to not know how to swim? I *think* that it's fairly unusual here in The States.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I could probably teach some basic survival skills in an hour or two to three people. The biggest thing though is if you were ever accidentally pushed into deep water, is to relax. When relaxed the human body has generally enough fat in it to float to the surface (unless you are horribly scrawny or incredibly muscular) There are a few techniques to be able to breathe from a floating position that are easy to teach. Once you have those basics the rest of swimming comes quite easily.

Then Kama I will teach you the T-stroke, known also by the infamous name "Chickens, Airplanes, Rockets" and how to flip from your front to your back if you don't already know that, and we will have you watersafe in no time!

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Wre your certs current mack? I was one for years but my certs have expired. I'm not sure how long the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor actually lasts for. The CPR and the First Aid are long overdue for renewal and I haven't bothered.

AJ

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

You're officially in charge of keeping Kama, Farmgirl, and TheTick from drowning then. I say you force the three of them to carry a fun noodle at all times, regardless of their proximity to the pool, just to be on the safe side.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

<-- likes to play with fun noodles.. [Wink]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Farmgirl - my friends and I during trips to the lake would hold noodle rodeos. We were quite adept at standing on noodles underwater and other such daring feats. Occasionally, the noodles' desire to float overpowers your balance and skill and it bucks you off.
My now-married friend and I tried to relive the noodle rodeo excitement recently, successfully convincing her husband that her crazy high school friend really is totally nuts. [Smile]

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Instructor certs expire after a year and a half if you don't teach it during that time and file the documentation with the Red Cross.

ALL of my certs are expired and I had a lot--lifeguard, kayak, canoe and rowing instructor, sailing instructor, first aid, CPR for professional rescuers...I think that's it.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

So you're saying you're not actually a lifeguard, right?

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

yeah, sigh, how quickly qualifications expire.
My brothers are still current of course since they both professionally lifeguard.

I had WSI, Lifeguarding, CPR for Professional Rescuers and First aid. All gone now... though the knowledge really isn't.

AJ

T-stroke is elementary backstroke arms, with a flutter kick, much easier to teach than elementary backstroke with its "down, out and around" leg movements.

We'd teach T-stroke before we taught freestyle because it was the easiest to build confidence since they could breath mostly normally, while freestyle requires controlled breathing.

I know that the double trudgeon is some wierd variation on sidestroke but I never learned it.

AJ

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I can keep from drowning, but I never did figure out the breathing while freestyling thing. If you're teaching that, I'd be happy to learn.

Posted by Happy Camper (Member # 5076) on :

Trudgeon is like an overarm sidestroke, while double trudgeon is a really odd cross between crawl and sidestroke.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I'm making myself jealous of my brothers as we speak. Realize that they are both currently lounging on lifeguard stands looking out at the Pacific Ocean somewhere in Southern California as I type. I didn't have good enough eyesight to be a beach lifeguard. I'm sure they are keeping vigilant watch, but I've heard stories of how often they get hit on too...

AJ

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I found lifeguarding to be terminally boring. I also hate swimming. [Wink]

Yeah...you never lose the knowledge. I sailed a sunfish around last weekend and hadn't been sailing in over a year. I was able to put up the running rigging (sunfish really don't have any standing rigging) and go without difficulty. I even capsized because of a gust of wind from another direction (storm was brewing) and was able to right the boat in less than a minute.

After practicing all of those skills so many times, you just don't forget.

If my friend is to be believed, there is little distinction.

When you put sexually hungry men and women together in the same area, it's a sex club.

When you put sexually hungry gay men together, it's a gay bar.

I'm just going to stick to my corner pub and continue to swear off women. [Big Grin]

I get a little shy when I'm wearing a swimsuit, unless I make myself forget people can see more of my body than usual. So, I'll act silly and playful and talkative in order to pretend I have lots of clothes on.

Yaay, me! I'm just a month recovering from having Sophia and I went out and bought a swimsuit yesterday. And it even shows a BIT of tummy. Of course, I'd rather it didn't, but it was too cute to pass up.
