P.S. I guess it will also be talk like a pirate day.

What kinds of time parameters are there as far as folks (Kat) being in the area, and folks returning to BYU? Should we have it at my house in Salt Lake or work out a location in Provo?

Ooh! How about Tucson!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Either Provo or SLC works for us. If it's SLC, we can ferry a group up to SLC in our van.

Hmm....I was thinking about coming the middle of September, but I haven't bought a ticket yet...

I don't think I'll have money to come the end of August.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Maybe we could hold off until then?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I'd be delighted, but it's up to y'all. [Smile]

I'd be delighted but I'll be in Indiana. [Grumble]

Mid september is also fine. I'm thinking.... I'm actually going to be in Phoenix again mid-September. Oddly enough. The dates are a swirling vortex of goo.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Do you have a definite date for mid-September? I haven't bought a ticket yet and it really doesn't matter for me, so I could coordinate that.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

When my husband gets home, I should be able to ask him.

Posted by Zevlag (Member # 1405) on :

Yay! let me know when, September is fairly open at this point.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I'm going to Phoenix the week of Sept 19-25. FWIW.

P.S. Kat, are you going to be headquartered in SL or UT country?

I'll be back August 27th. SLC sounds good, but I'd need a ride. Pooka and I can have our freudian bake-off. [Big Grin]

West Jordan at the most south, but possibly Bountiful. It depends on who I stay with - my best friend lives in West Jordan, but the grandparents are in Bountiful.

But if we do something that's down south, maybe Zevlag could pick me up on his way down?

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I was going to wait to bump this, but Hatrack is one area of my life where procrastination actually evaporates.

It sounds like fewer people will have to travel if we come down to Provo, and I can pick you up from West Jordan, or Amka already lives somewhere out there if she is available. If we do it in Provo, though, does anyone have an oven willing to host it? Maybe we don't have to have the Freudian bake off at the same time.

Mine will be bigger. [Evil Laugh]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I offer our home as a location. We even have an oven.

Now let's see if I get in trouble for offering it without consulting my wife. [Smile]

[ROFL]

I must admit, the thought did cross my mind, "He didn't talk to me about it first...." But that is fine. We would love to have everyone over! For those of you who might bring children, we have a wooden play gym in the back so us big people can talk big people stuff. [Smile]

There was a rumor on Galacticus that Annie might be out at the end of August.

Mine will be longer and frenchier. Or maybe squatter and cinnamonier. I haven't decided yet [Razz]

Edit: I defy anyone to put that in the OOC thread.

We could get a Phx/Tucson clump together in Sept couldn't we? I missed the last one in Tucson and would love it if I could meet Pooka while she is here [Smile] Sept is so much nicer in Arizona [Wink]

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I think so. We haven't worked out whether we will have our kids with us or not. My husband can't ever plan anything more than 48 hours in advance.

P.S. But we have paid for a condo from Sept 19-24th.

Porter has goaded me into adding Granola to the menu of the next clump

Posted by peterh (Member # 5208) on :

Perhaps lusti, pooka, and PSI, we should start our own AZ get together thread... I'm not planning on going anywhere that month...

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Granola? Yeah -- that would be good for Billtmas.

Which is what I am suggesting we call this next Utah clump.

Here's my suggestion - Billtmas at our place in Orem on Saturday, September 18.

How does that work for everybody?

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

Billtmas works. So long as you tell me how to pronounce it.

And what it means. [Dont Know]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Billtmas originated here.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Sounds good. Timeframe?

P.S. though it doesn't sound like Kat is coming anymore anyhow...

Hawiian haystacks and pinacoladas! Yeehaw!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Like I said, I'm planning on having everybody over at our place on Sept 18, unless anybody wants to change the place or date.

I'm not trying to force anything -- I'm just creating this time & place as a starting point.

Just as a friendly reminder, September also holds our dear Pirate Day. Do not forsake Pirate Day!

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

ARRRR!

What day is Pirate Day?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Sept 22, I believe; the day after the release of the Star Wars DVD. Imagine the possibilities...

Luke, I am your father-ARRRRR.

Use the force, matey... ARRRRR.

Where is the rebels secret booty... ARRRRR.

That's no moon... arrrrrr.

Yub nub, essub yub nub... yarrrrr.

ARRRRRgreed!

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Huh. I managed to forget that I already knew pirate day was also billtmas. I've only seen Pirates of the Carribean once. Anyone up for that as part of the fest or are we all Depped out? (Or Bloomed out or Knightleyed out, or in the case of the truly bizarre, Rushed out?)

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I'm looking for confirmation or refutation here -- are we having it at mine and bev's house in Orem?

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I'm cool with that. I don't think anyone else is especially close to where I live. I could pick up a group of people from BYU. (to go to Porter's in Orem- in case that isn't clear).

Just want to bump this again and say our home is open to Hatrackers Sept 18th. We have a nomination to watch Pirates of the Carribean, and I plan to provide Hawiian haystacks for dinner. (Maybe virgin pinacoladas to drink?) With both Billtmas and Pirate Day, we have a tropical theme going on. So if we want to do a potluck meal, please bring something along those lines.

Heck, if you want to dress in a grass skirt or pirate garb, go right ahead with that too. Feel free to bring tropical-sounding music if you've got it.

What time do we want to gather? Does dinner and a movie work for people? Anyone up for Settlers of Catan? Or if you have Seafarers of Catan Expansion (we don't) feel free to bring that. We've never played it, but it is theme-related.

Also, if anyone has the games Taboo and Guestures, those are two of my favorite group games, and we own neither.

Edit: Oh, and I would really appreciate an RSVP in this thread to help with the planning. [Smile]

IM or email me for directions to our home.

I just got the Apples to Apples box set (with the first and second expansion sets) and I can't wait to break it in.

Do pooka and I still want to do our Freudian bake-off, or should we hold out till the next meetup?

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I guess we could bring our pre-baked goods to compare. What is a Hawaiian Haystack? What time do folks want to start?

I'm really glad talk like a pirate day doesn't coincide with fast sunday.

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

Isn't it actually on the 19th? *confused*

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Pirate Day is the 19th. We are gathering Saturday the 18th. We have declared the day Billtmas. Because of the proximity to Pirate Day, we will honor both.

A Hawiian haystack is something you put together yourself, kinda like a taco salad. The base is rice, with a chicken and sauce on top of that. Other topings include: pinapple, coconut, almond slivers, celery, onions, (and possibly others) and it is often topped with a marachino cherry.

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

I think I've had something like that at various Youth Conferences. Can it also involve tortillas and chow mein noodles?

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

I forgot about the Chow Mein noodles! I've not seen it with tortillas, but I am open to ideas! I like variety. [Big Grin]

We could throw something Italian on it too....

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Is the sauce like sweet and sour sauce? That would be kind of good. In addition to french bread, I'm bringing granola which has coconut and almonds in it. Maybe I could throw in some dried mangoes, to make it really tropical. It works as a snack food or as an icecream topper.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Reminds me of those luau pizzas, with pork and sweet and sour sauce. Can't say I've been brave enough to try one.

It's funny bev, I've just been on different threads from you and wondered where you had gone.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Pooka, threads from me? I have started so few these days....

I haven't been around much lately. Which is a good thing for my RL. I should probably keep it up. [Wink]

The sauce is really just a chicken gravy. Nothing special.

These are also called "Chicken Sundaes"

They include chopped pepper, shredded cheddar, diced tomatoes, and water chestnuts also. (I had to look up the recipe! [Smile] )

*Bump*

Anybody planning on coming besides pooka and SM?

Should I cross-post on galactic cactus, or should I say that if they aren't willing to check HR every once in a while, they don't belong at a HR gathering anyway?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I would come, but I'm not going to be in Utah. I wish I could. [Frown]

hmm...the last is your decision. I have to admit I am inclined towards the second, but it's whatever you want. [Smile] Numbers isn't everything. [Smile]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I posted this over at Galactic Cactus, but I'll cross-post here as well:

Actually, what do you guys think about having it earlier in the afternoon? How about 2:00? How about noon? We could have the food for lunch instead of dinner. With so many people wanting to see our football team get beaten, maybe we should do it earlier.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

One more day...

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

One more day to revolution. We must nip it in the bud. We'll ready for these demons; they will wet themselves with blood.

Well, now I'm glad I'm not going. [Smile] That did work.

There is a juicy thread at www.galacticcactus.com in the stuff forum. For some reason my browser wouldn't go to the window I tried to open.

Well, the insanity of the Billtmas season is over and it's now time for Talk Like a Pirate Day resolutions. This year I resolve to wear more eyeliner and possibly get a gold tooth.

Bev and Porter threw a great party. In addition to the tropical theme, we played guesstures, had delicious baked goods and listened to Bev's labor music. I guess it's appropriate since the gathering was originally planned for labor day. While most of us didn't bring presents, I did cart away the entertainment center that B&P had labeled "FREE" on the curb. Porter helped me put it in the car.

Posted by Magson (Member # 2300) on :

I saw that thing. It wouldn't have fit in my car, though. And I don't need one either. . . .

It was a fun outing. I'm glad I got to meet more of the "Utah Clump."

Thx to Bev and Porter for opening their home to us all!

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

Much fun was had by all. I discovered the joy and pleasure of pina coladas. And brought others to the joy of my "rum". Mmmm...

And I adore Porter and Bev's kids. ((((Athena, Sanford, and Ivy)))). Edit: ohh! I forgot that Ivy used Billtmas as an opportunity to take her first steps.

It was so much fun having you guys here! It was so good to have the chance to get to know you all better. I am sorry that Amka and pajeba were not able to make it. [Frown]

Maybe next year we can have a gift exchange. We are still working on the proper observance of Billtmas. [Wink] Me likes the pinacolada and rummmmmm.

And--yes, it is true! Ivy took her very first solo steps today! The gang was all there to witness. Since we were all sitting in a circle, it may have given her that extra boost of confidence that she needed.

I had a marvelous time today. [Smile] Thanks again to Mary Cate and Porter for letting us come over and for the delicious lunch (thanks to the other lunch contributors, too!). I love these get togethers! Great to see all the familiar faces and meet a new one (Magson was the only one I hadn't met yet)!

Hooray for Billtmas! [Big Grin]

I'm curious as to when the pictures will be posted. I'm kinda wanting to see how ridiculous I look in chainmail with a plastic sword. . . .
