I am not thrilled with the Fun Company I am working for. Due to some managerial mistakes, my income will be dropping for the third straight year in a row.
So I am looking around.
I recieved what could become an offer from a nationwide company. It would double my income most likely.
Yet I do not like the ethics of their advertisements and the value of the product.
I may be wrong about it.
Should I listen to what they have to say?
Should I accept a job for a company if I disagree with their marketing ethics?
Details. The company is "The Yellow Book." They advertise by use of negatives and emphasis that "People prefer their book to the others" when I don't and nobody I know of does. They have a much more limited listing than their competition, making my use of their book a definite second choice.
On the other hand, if I take the job, I spend 2 weeks in Cedar Rapids. I know we have some Iowa Jatraqueros, but I don't know how close they are to Cedar Rapids.

Go talk to them, and review the offer.
Personally, I don't see advertising as a real issue of ethics mainly because I don't trust any advertising at all. There commercials were a marketing decision, and how they market their product may be totally different from how they treat their employees. Then again, it may not. I would not let this issue be the only one that kept me from taking the job.

Yes and Yes. It will double your income?! YES.
I'm not sure I really see an ethical dilema in your situation. I left a job because I disagreed with their ethics, but it was much, much more extreme and money wasn't an issue. I worked for a beverage alcohol trade publication and they were launching a campaign to help beverage alcohol companies flood traditional non-drinking world markets (like India) with spirits. I didn't want to be part of that. I don't think that the Yellow Book is hurting anyone with their advertising.
And think of all the toys and college tuition you could get for Sasha.

There are some places I wouldn't work. Abortion clinic is at the top of the list. But a phone company because you don't like the ads? I would deal with that for double the income in a heartbeat!

Dan -- if you end up working for them, how far up the chain of command would you be? Because if you are going into managerial, you might, in the future, get a chance to put in your two cents about their advertising and suggest a different, more positive image for them.
Just think of all the GOOD you could do for them (instead of thinking of the bad they might do to you). Just an idea.

I turned down a job offer with a rival company here in Orlando several years ago over ethics. It would have been a substantial pay increase and the opportunity for mucho bonuses, but they have a very bad reputition of cutting corners when it comes to engineering. People who had worked there previously backed that up.
But cutting corners on engineering and cheating clients is much worse than a bit of false advertising - which no one believes anyway. I'd consider it.

FWIW, I have a fairly recent edition of the "News Media" Yellow Book - I assume it's the same company?
The book is invaluable to anyone doing media work on a national level - well organized and accurate. It's a product that has no real competition at all that I know of.
I lovesss my precioussss yellow book.
PSSSSS. The book IS kinda pricey, but if the money is actually going toward paying people decent wages, I can live with that.
