I'd like to get a group going for Pigskin Pick'em.
Any other football fans out there that are interested let me know and I'll sign up and send out invites

Obviously the new season hasn't started yet but here is the link. You have to register for an account with ESPN but it is free.

Count me in! What do you need to send an invite? My ESPN name is JeniLG and my email is in my profile.

I've never started a group before but I'm pretty sure that all I need is your e-mail addy.

A close friend of mine that passed away several months ago was the one who used to send me an invite. I miss him terribly and was just wishing I could get an invite from the big galoot. I thought I would carry on the tradition with my new found friends.

Pigskin Pick'em is a weekly pick game. Each week the matchups are listed and you pick the winner. Quite simple and takes very little time.

Okay, so let's see who wants to make some early predictions:

AFC Championship: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens

NFC Championship: Carolina Panthers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Superbowl: Kansas City vs. Seattle

Champion: Seattle Seahawks

Let loose the slingstones and arrows...!

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

I can only HOPE our Chiefs will do that well this year!

Why you won't see some of the favorites listed:

Dallas: Just ain't going to happen
Washington: Miracle turnarounds take two years, at least
Philadelphia: I think that their destiny train left the station last year.

Green Bay: An emotional favorite, but there isn't enough overall strength.
Minnesota: An overall good team, just not a Great Team... doesn't have the internal strength to make it down the stretch.

St. Louis: The Rams sang their swansong last year.

Atlanta: Michael Vick is incredible, but one man can't win 16 games all by himself.
Tampa Bay: Two years ago Gruden built the perfect team for right then, just as he had with the Raiders the year before. Now, well, he's gotta rebuild.

Indianapolis: Am I the only guy who can't stand Peyton Manning? I cherish the few games where he walks away with a grass stain on his usually spotless uniform.
Tennessee: You let the heart of your team go, you expect the slump.
Cincinnati: Next year...

Dolphins: The collapse came quickly and it will go faster as the year goes by. No RB, no QB, and WRs dropping like flies.
Patriots: The Boston Magic only works every other year.

Pittsburgh: Better than expected, but nope
Cleveland: They'll do better this year, but it's going to be a long road.

Denver: They just don't inspire me. Plug in any running back and they'll do great, but the Modular Team of the 90s is above average, not great.
Oakland: Castoffs, rejects, renegades, oldtimers. That's the recipe that always works for the Raiders, but this year won't be the year.

Surprise team of the year: Arizona Cardinals. I'll go long on this one and predict... a WildCard appearance.

I will bet you 100,000,000 dollars that the Cardinals will win, both this year and next year.

But you have to front 50% of the bet as coverage.

Email me if you're interested.

Of course they'll win. At least 4 times. These aren't the Chargers we're talking about!

That is to say, 'The Cardinals will will the Superbowl, both this year and next year.'

Any takers? Remember, a 50,000,000 NON-REFUNDABLE coverage fee is required. . .

I'm still looking for some football fans to join this super simple pick'em contest. Once a week you pick the winner in all the NFL games for that week. It takes very little time and I think it's pretty fun for no more effort than it requires.

I guess I'll clarify my early comments, especially about the Vikings, Packers and the NFC North in general.

It's not that I don't see either the Vikes or Packers making it to the playoffs, I just don't see either of them getting past the first rounds. Honestly, I just don't even think the Vikings will make the playoffs this year.

The Bears, well, they've got to establish an offense and I'm not sure that their defense will be in the top 16 this year. So I can't, in good faith, predict better than say 7-9 for their record this year.

The Lions, however, might pull at 2003 Bengals and start moving up from the cellar they've lived in since, ummm, 1976 or so. They've had a young team for the last couple of years and maybe they are going to gel this year. They could be a surprise. I think they will compete well in their division.

The teams I mentioned in my previous post were the perennial powerhouses that I didn't think would be able to get the job done this year for various reasons. Most of the time it comes from either salary cap issues, rebuilding efforts or putting too much emphasis on one or two star players with 51 underpaid, underachievers on the roster.

Case in point, the Indianapolis Colts. The offense can rock with the best of them, but the defense is suspect from the get-go and tends to break down severely at the halfway mark of the season. Manning's huge salary won't make fixing this easy.

They'll always challenge for the playoffs, but fall short as opposing defenses put the knock on them. And their team owner was the biggest proponent of the "no-touchy" emphasis on cornerbacks this year because opposing teams figured out that Harrison couldn't compete when it came to fighting for receptions.

Well, A.J.

You were the only one to pick Indianapolis last night, and you darn near pulled it off! My heart stopped a couple of time when it looked like the Colts were going to beat the Patriots at home. But not quite!

Farmgirl

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I would like to say I debated about it a lot, but I didn't. It was probably the only pick I did give more of a few seconds thought to and the hardest to make. And last night when I was talking to the Tick, I'd forgotten I'd picked Indy dispite the fact that they were the visiting team. I went and double checked and changed who I was rooting for! I'll pay more attention to what I do next week, but I fully expect that my rear will be kicked by the rest of you guys.

It turns out they have a college football pick'em too for like 10 selected games each week. But I think its too late to start another group.

I originally had selected Indy but checked my picks yesterday and changed that one as well as a few others. Hopefully the other changes will be as beneficial.

adam, I wrote this up for sakeriver, but it seems appropriate here:

quote:
It was like a scene from a sitcom. Went to my father-in-law's company picnic. Normally a bore for me, as he mostly works with young punks and bikers (apparently HVAC work attracts them, who knew?), but there is a guy who brings his TV and a power inverter so we can watch the game. That's the Bills game, for those of you scoring at home. He even learned a lesson from the year before and brought a seperate battery for it. It's a close, hard-fought defensive battle. The Bills are stopped at the goal line and settle for a field goal, now up 10 to 6. The Jags get the ball with a few minutes left, and move it down the field. After a long pass down to the 19, people gather around the TV. Leftwich, who had struggled mightily for most of the game, looked cool for 7 seconds left. He drops back, heaves the ball into the back of the end zone...

*poof*

The TV goes OFF. It's a mad scramble. The dude immediately dives into the back of his truck, trying to switch from the spare to the main vehicle battery. The TV randomly switches on and off, so we see split second scenes, prompting things like 'is he signalling touchdown?' 'who's celebrating?' and so on. Finally we get the radio going, and then the TV, as the replay booth takes a look at the play. The touchdown stands, and the Bills lose.

NC State lost to Ohio Sate and Va Tech lost to USC so it will be interesting to see who wins this. If NC beats Tech then the argument could be made that USC is overrated, even if that squeaker with Tech was their first game and they've probably improved since then. However Tech is the home team, and in college that is an even bigger advantage than in the pros.

This game has huge repercussions in the ACC as well. Miami is probably a large step ahead of the rest, and Florida state a small step. Then Tech, UVa, and NC State are probable contenders with FS for 2nd. Maryland is a possibility if they can recover from the loss to WVu, and Wake is surprisingly strong.

Hmmmm..I will never again edit my original picks based on other people's opinions.

I picked the Saints and Jags, but went in and change them after reading up on the teams since I had not seen them play this year...

And they won....as did the Texans adn the Giannts......both whom I had picked and then changed as well.

The onlu one I would have lost was Detroit...I am from MI so I picked them to win, but changed it...ad they lost, so that saved me a point there....

At the cost of all the others.

So I would have been 13-1 now....

But I'm not... [Mad] [Cry]

The newly re-loaded Bills, however, look like they could threaten just about anyone. McGahee and Evans both contributed big time yesterday. Is anybody else sick of the ESPN Sunday night commentary team? They just get more irritating every week. Paul "IgottatellyaWatchhisfeetwatchhisfeet!!" Bryant, Mike "Holy Cow!" They get in the way of the game, instead of enhancing it and making it more enjoyable. Time for a change.

Well, mostly. Stupid snow in stupid Denver with stupid Broncos not keeping their stupid ten-point lead in the stupid game I wanted stupid them to win. Grr...

Well, I'm screwed. None of my picks stuck - it's all on visitors.

And I know I put in my picks, because I went back in and switched the Redskins pick, and at that point I had more home teams than visitors selected.

Ah, well. It was fun being in second while it lasted.

Dagonee
P.S., It was more fun being in first while it lasted. [Smile]

None opf mine stucha t all. it has a np in front of all the teams...I didn't even get to have the default picks of home teams.

No points at all, to be honest.

The service is down now - maybe they're restoring from backups.

It's back up - Winning this week, but probably too little, too late to catch up.

Well, those of us who bothered to make our picks this week did well. What on earth happened to the rest of you?

In other news, I have tickets to next week's Packer/Jaguars game in Green Bay. I am ridiculously excited, though I suspect I will be thawing out for at least three weeks after it...

I made my picks the past two weeks...but the web site says I didn't.

So I give up.

I should have had 11 wins last week, accordingto who I actually picked, and 10 this week......but since I can't prove it, and my picks aren't ging to stay anymore, I don't see why I should bother.

BTW, I make all my picks on Tuesdays, so there is no possible way I could have nt picked either week.

Same thing happened to me now - twice in a row.

I'm done.

I tried contacting ESPN to complain about the picks not registering but have received no response in 2 days. My apologies to those that have been shafted.

I've had to login twice before, but that seems to do the trick.

I finally got a reply to my complaint but it didn't really accomplish anything:

quote:
Darren,

Thank you for contacting the League Office.

Unfortunately, if our system did not record members picks for that week,
the picks cannot be done retroactively. Sorry for your inconvenience.

Thank you for playing ESPN.com Fantasy Games!

Well, I thought I might have had a chance of taking the lead the last week since Carrie didn't make her picks, but I didn't quite make it. It's all good though, I still got first place in another pool I was in. [Smile]

Congratulations Carrie!

Sorry to the rest of you who didn't get to play the last few weeks. Down with ESPN!

Woo! I swept the NFL games here this year! Bwahaha. [Evil Laugh]

Yeah, I completely forgot about picking that last week - finals and the holidays'll do that to you. [Smile]

I wonder how you would have done if you had no picks for 3 weeks....like me.

[Big Grin]

Congrats!

Are we playing again this year? Has there already been a thread that I've missed?

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

There hasn't been a thread (good to see you, Jeni!), and I've also been thinking about setting one up.

ESPN.com or Yahoo? What does anyone prefer?

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

Good to see you too. [Smile] No preference as to ESPN or Yahoo.

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

Actually, maybe Yahoo would be better given all the issues people had with ESPN last year.

I don't think I would play with all the issues I had last year, to be honest, although I woudl be interested if we tried Yahoo. [Big Grin]
