A rather brilliant movie that flopped at the box office, starring Al Pacino as a failing and aging director who is caught between a rock and a hard place when the star of his new film quits.

He is approached by a computer geek with a new idea (and the only real belief-stretching you'll have to do throughout): virtual actors, completely computer simulated. Upon his death, the programmer wills the virtual actor software to the director, Viktor Taransky. Taransky uses the software to fill the hole in his film with Simone, with whom the public instantly falls in love.

The movie goes beyond the basic story and becomes almost a fable of hero worship and stardom, without becoming preachy or losing its clever tongue-in-cheek Hollywood satire.

And if you saw the previews, forget 'em. They don't do it justice.

Yeah, I saw that movie a while ago on Starz or HBO or another one of those. I don't remember the previews but I very much enjoyed the movie. I thought it was a very interesting concept and well done.

It was amusing and in parts really good. Hardly "brilliant," IMO. But certainly better than its box office would indicate.

Simone was the first DVD I ever threw away.
