So I'm sitting here listening to an advance copy of Straylight Run's debut album.

Several months ago a friend put some SR on a mixtape for me. The band suprised me, they seemed to bring a breath of fresh air to the pop/emo scene. solid sound but still seemed to be able to embrace the unpolished sound. It was just a hint of imperfection in the recording mind you, but enough to make it endearing.

goto Straylight Run and click on any of the songs on the homepage to experience what i first heard.

ok, so i was looking forward to this record. They rerecorded a few of the demos and in the process managed to bring the suck with overproduction. where are those little wrinkles in the songs that i learned to love? and what the hell is this synthdance song with a female vocalist?

and yes, i realize that this post doesn't flow well at all. bite me.

that is all.

Am I just really really out of it? Why is it that everytime someone posts about a band here, I've never heard of them?

Well, Ben in particular prides himself on being out of the mainstream.

actually, this is probably one of the more "mainstream" bands i listen to. Aside from Jimmy Eat World, this may be the poppiest band i listen to. But they are solid musicians and i cannot deny the talent.

To put things in perspective, the lead singer of this band is the former head songwriter for Taking Back Sunday (who are currently all over the radio) on their first record. He was the cause of the Taking Back Sunday VS. BRAND NEW feud...Then he left because Taking Back Sunday started going downhill.

but either way...

Well, I keep out of the mainstream too...

while this may be, i think we probably keep in touch with different non-mainstream circles.

*giggle* This is doubtless true. You don't seem the type to listen frequently to Broadway and oldies...

However, I meant more in a general sense, I never ever know what people are talking about. It's not just Ben's posts, it's everyone else's too! And although I don't listen to a lot of it, I at least know band names! [Confused]

On what planet is Taking Back Sunday all over the radio? I mean, sure, there might be one college radio station in each major market playing one track -- that one from the Spiderman II soundtrack, probably -- but that's not exactly heavy rotation. [Smile]

99x is a monster of a station in Atlanta (not a very good station mind you but still huge in broadcast signal, and fanbase) and they are pushing it hella hard.

I wouldn't call that all over the radio. I keep pretty in touch with the radio industry, being that i work in it, and taking back sunday isnt being pushed hard at all. They have recently become more popular, but thats been over the course of a couple years. They are still not mainstream, except in college town emo circles.

I forgot the point i was going to make in my post. The buzz on straylight run for the last few months was that the album wasn't going to measure up. So im not surprised to hear that it doesn't. I haven't heard it yet but I'm sure I will soon. Then I'll post thoughts.

So, how did I not notice your return, AR?

Posted by prolixshore (Member # 4496) on :

It hasn't been much of a return. ::grin::

I'm a low-key kinda guy.

But yes, I'm back from working 65 to 70 hours a week. Nice to see you saxon!
