So, I went downtown to see my brother and his wife who were in town sans kids to attend DragonCon. Ate at Everybody's Pizza then lurked in various lobbies to scope the costumes. It was a family-friendly time of day and the boys had fun gawking at their favorite super heroes and various Star Wars, LotR and Anime costumes.

Fishnet may say "one size fits all" but that doesn't mean it's a good idea for some people to wear it. Still, there was nothing salacious, though one wonders why women that large would WANT to dress like the schoolgirl with the mace from KILL BILL. *shrug*

AAAANYWAY... We should do the WenchCon thing again, maybe add a dash of Anime, since many of the core Wenches are now Anime-ted.

What do you think? Should we use MLK day again, or wait until later in the spring? I think this year I might even be able to set up a dealers' room, if I have enough time. Does that sound like fun?

Throw out ideas about what you think would be fun:

Costuming, karaoke, invading a restaurant or mall in costume...

The floor is open. [Smile]

Where is this held?
I think you should hold it in Boston so I can go ^^.
And we should watch Miyazaki movies all day long and disturbing anime movies!
And go to a fairly high brow resturant dressed like Gundams or something.

If the floor is open, won't you fall through it? [Wink] [Big Grin] Why can't any of these gatherings happen in Arizona, or at least close to it? [Wall Bash]

Posted by Olivetta (Member # 6456) on :

Okay then. It has been Atlanta (or close, anyway) the last two times. If we want to move it somebody else will have to organize it.

To those who attended previous WenchCons: Same hotel or not? I think the MLK weekend is the best time to get the cheapest deals on the hotel meeting rooms, etc. Should we go for two meeting rooms, with one showing movies and one with other activities? More fencing, anyone (now that Jamie has been taking classes and can cut us all up blindfolded)?

If not Atlanta, how about D.C.?

Being relatively new here I don't know exactly what wenchcon is (probably a gaming/faire/fandom thing) but I have to say that it has the best name out of anything, ever. Where and when is it???

DC has a wide variety of meeting venues, lots of museums to go to in costume, 3 airports, 2 budget airlines, and trains from the Northeast.

I wanna come!!! But I don't know... My parents probably wouldn't be too keen on me going on a road trip alone to the south... :/ Hmmm... Must think on't. Mayhap one of the fine people in the Williams family will go and oblige me by dragging me along. We shall see.

Just about anytime till september is bad for me, if things work out like i want. You guys go ahead and plan, and i'll do my best to make it.

Ni!

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

:giggle: Ryuko, Atlanta is a 17 hour drive. I'm thinking an airplane would be a good idea. But for me it totally depends on when it is... if people want to do it in the spring, I will be otherwise occupied in Iowa. (So will you.)

Anyway, we'll see how the plans shake out...

All I know is that I plan to be in Georgia the last week of October for the Savannah Film Fest. Apart from that, who knows when I'll be able to get back down there.

But you better believe I'll try and make it whenever it is...

I'm cool with anywhere, but I only feel comfortable making the arrangements here in Atlanta. If DC looks good to lots of folks, we'll need a DC person to find a hotel, etc.

I also think it would be best to have an Event Planner to make the schedule ahead of time. Jenny G would be ideal for this, but only if she's willing. Schedules are not my bag. [Wink] [Big Grin]

Ben, we're into the geeky stuff because of my brother, mainly. He started a Starfleet thingy and piad the whole families' memberships to get his quota (even my mom helped make costumes and stuff, at one point). Anyway, shut up, you dork.

About later in the spring... I think hotel rates may go up around here sometimes in March. The weather at that time should be fairly mild, though.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I think the Gathering later in the spring is going to be in Iowa for The Wedding. I still like the idea of January for WenchCon, but I'm flexible. [Smile]

Olivia, if WenchCon was in D.C., could you come?

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

:/ I dunno. January? Is there going to be a Summer con? Could we move WenchCon a summerin'?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I think the cons are becoming more frequent. I have no doubt that a summer con will be planned at the The Wedding.

You mean there was a gathering in Atlanta and I missed it? Just damn. . . [Cry] I always miss the fun stuff. Oh well, I hope everyone made it home all right. ATL was no fun to be near today. Sigh...maybe next time...

You and me both Jess.

Although I got to spend six hours trying to coordinate picking up a great-aunt at the airport through the Frances cast-off.

Posted by Jess N (Member # 6744) on :

Ewww..you poor guy. I hate the airport!

Did the storm mess you up too bad? We got lots of wind and rain but no major or minor damage.

For those of you who left our humble burg yesterday, you missed a real blow out.

Oh, Trevor, you count as a wench?

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Actually, the traffic was amazingly light - apparently everyone decided to sit today out.

Which is just fine - Atlanta traffic and rain just don't mix.

Am I a wench? Nah - but a pretty girl can always throw a wench in my plans. [Big Grin]

lol a 'wench' in his plans, that's bad.

You are shameless! [Razz]

I noticed the lack of traffic tonight as I drove to school (KSU). A trip that normally takes me around 45 minutes took only about 30 minutes today. I didn't even have to sit in line at Chastain Road.

Any type of bad weather doesn't mix well with ATL traffic. I love ATL but...not all the cars.

Ah, Atlanta - where driving is a contact sport.

At least I didn't say, "throw a wench in my pants." [Big Grin]

KSU!?! I live Just north of Kennesaw, in a sleepy hamlet called Towne Lake (technically part of Woodstock, even though it has its own zip code). I may be taking some continuing education courses at KSU very soon.

BTW, the last WenchCon was held at the Winngate Inn on Barret parkway. We saw RotK at Barret Commons (or... MANY of us did). It was kind of Lotr-ish con, that grew out of the Wenche's Tavern threads. They were very amusing for some time, but have mostly faded away, naturally.

Anybody want to post some links to Wenche's Tavern threads or discussions of the WenchCons I and II? I'd be much obliged, and It will give folks an idea what to expect. Also, Makillian has some amazing pics from the last one on her Mad Owl site.

Later in the spring would probably be best for Vána (and possibly myself) - the more time we have to plan the finances, the better.

When is _very_ important for me...probably moreso than where, since the chances of convincing you all to come to New Orleans are very slim, I'm sure. [Razz]

Later in the spring gets my vote; I go to Cannes again in January, and I can't have two trips that close together.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

*Points out that Vána is one of the people whose attendance in Iowa in April is not optional*

So just make sure “later in the spring” does not interfere with her musical responsibilities. [Razz]

How's a guy supposed to make a vacation schedule without knowing when and where all the wenches will be?

My vote's for either the first week in February or the last to coincide with my Boston-New Orleans (or the other way around) roadtrip. [Big Grin] .

Or we could do it in Boston around the time of Boskone and drop in and see OSC and George Martin. (But I'm biased--I'm planning on being there, anyway. [Razz] )

January's only a month away! And February's....*counts on fingers*...only...two months away!

asdgkweongviko.... I WANNA GO!!!

I am SO going to go to a con attended by GRRM someday. The next Worldcon would be lovely, as I hear Ran may attend, and it would be awesome to meet the master of ASOAIF triva as well, but really, any con would be good, though one with a big presence of the BwB would be lovely. I need to meet him! *starts saving pennies*

There is a henna party that weekend in February. There were rumblings about TMMedina and Olivette organizing something in Atlanta, but I don't know if she's up to it right now. If Atlanta won't work, I still like the idea of D.C.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Boskone sounds like a really cool idea though....does everyone who wants to attend have to registrer or is there a daily fee we could pay? If I go JenniK will want to go and $84 si a pretty steep price to go say hi to OSC for a total of 2 min, if you know what I mean....

Yeah, it was. I found it quite comfortable.

I would love to come to the next WenchCon, or whatever big con we have. If it's in January, though, it would be very iffy I could make it due to finances. I really need more advance notice in order to save up for a vacation.

We could do it again on president's day weekend, maybe. That is in February. March and April are , like, full of weddings and stuff, and after that the hotel rates go up.

I could throw somthing together, but I can't cater lunch. If we have people with Sabbath issues, I'll make sure you get food that won't compromise the requirments of your faith. But making food for 20+ people is NOT happening. Sorry. [Smile]

YOu know, there ARE two couples who are now engaged who met at last year's WenchCon. I guess it is a good place to meet chicks. Er, wenches. [Smile]

If I remember the events leading up to KamaCon correctly, someone circulated an email list of people interested in sharing hotel rooms along with personal preferences (non-smoker, smoker, etc.)

I suspect once the date for WenchConIII is confirmed and planning begins in earnest, another list will be circulated.

Failing that, you could go ahead and post a notice for hotel roommates on this thread.

Aw, skillery, you're killing me! I wish I could get a digital projector. I'm just thinking that maybe it's just too late for people to make travel arrangements...

Trevor, do you know of any decent but inexpensive hotels we could use? Otherwise I could just talk to the lady at the WinGate Inn in Kennesaw (off Barret Parkway).

We just need to decide on a date, and go from there, I guess.

Cheap hotels that I know of? What kind of person do you think I am? [Big Grin]

Seriously, I don't know of any personally, but I can make a list with location, prices and etc.

What specifics do you want in a hotel? I can narrow it down from there.

Come to think of it, there is a hotel on Peachtree Industrial, north of 285 - the room rates were quite reasonable, although I don't know about dining/ball room numbers.

Prolix, the least you could do is buy the ring and have it delivered to her. Be spontaneous and surprise her - women like that.

Of course, they also like TROs against stalkers. [Big Grin]

I checked three hotels in the immediate vicinity of where I was thinking (Peachtree Industrial and Holcomb Bridge Road) - I'll have to call Monday and get price quotes. The Hilton had a one bedroom going for $70ish a night, but I'm not sure how we're defining cheap.

All three places: Marriot, Hilton and Holiday Inn mentioned the possibility of a group discount for a convention, so that is a possibility.

There's also a nice-ish hotel in downtown Decatur - walking distance to the Decatur Square courtyard with funky little stores and eateries.

I'll call them and see what their average two-bedroom rate is for the weekend.

-Trevor

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Ok, the Holiday Inn in Decatur has a two-bed room for $104 a night, which makes it $52 a person.

If you belong to AAA, you might be able to get a discount on that.

Depending on what kind of numbers we're aiming for, I can call their sales department tomorrow and see if we can get an additional discount for a package-convention deal.

-Trevor

i worked in hotels for 5 years. almost all major chains (hilton excluded) and not once did i ask or care, none of us did, how many people were in a room. unless they were causing trouble then i threw the firecode book at them.
as for AAA. as long as you tell the clerk you belong to AAA in the reservation they will book it at the AAA rate and then not check at the desk.

oh the deception!

If 3 or 4 people are in a room, though, sometimes people have to double up on beds, and trying to fit 4 people in 2 double beds can be a bit much, when they're not family.

Plus, anyone who shares with me will have to put up with tripping over a playpen/portacrib. Just some things to consider.

People don't actually sleep at these gatherings. Maybe for a few hours, but not necessarily at night, basaically just whenever their bodies collapse. We could probably have 5 people to two beds without ever having a real conflict.

Hobbes, I've found that more revelry gets done better if you get a few hours here and there. Especially if there's a fairly organized "down time" and everyone does something to relax, be it tv watching or sleep or a bath or whatever. Granted, it does tend to be a few hours here and there, and it's rarely in the night (unless you count 5 am as night because it's still dark), but still, I'm all for those who want beds being able to afford them.

Last year we has around 22-25 people, some of them not sleeping at the hotel(and some with rooms didn't even sleep there, so whatever).

It came out to about $75.00 per room per night, after tax was added, and the meeting rooms were $50.00 per day. That was in the 'burbs. I bet if we went further north, it would be even cheaper.

Anyway, that was last year's pricing.

March is more doable for me than January, as I would have more time to save money. Also, I was getting nervous about another Con in January, as last year I missed my nephews' birthday party due to WenchCon II. I really didn't want to miss their birthdays two years in a row, especially since I don't get to see them that often.

If we do this in March and I find someway to go, which I'm not sure I'll be able to do but will certainly try, I will be seeing Hatrackers every month for four months in a row. That's kinda cool/scary. Oh, and that's assuming I get to meet maui babe while I'm there in January.

It's been mentioned before, but there are 3 major airports, easy and affordable public transportation all around the city, massive amounts of hotels to stay in, tons of museums to go to, and events and such to do all the time You name it. Movies, Dancing, Sports, and just about anything else you can imagine. There's also a very large amount of hatrackers in the D.C. area.

In my mind, since WenchCon was started and continued by Olivetta, she has right of first refusal. So if she and T are up to organizing it, which it sounds like they are, Atlanta it is.

Now, I think a DC Con would also be fabulous... CM, Kama said something about coming back in August... talk to her and see if maybe KamaCon II can be DC-based. That would be cool. [Smile]

Edit: So, I realize this was awfully presumptive sounding for someone who just said she isn't sure if she can come. Please know that the "In my mind...." was meant to imply "My vote is for...because..." and not to say "I think this is right, so it is what we must do."

The hotel in Decatur is $109 for a "two bedded suite" and I get the impression I'm going to have to go down to the hotel to check on the type of meeting room and price.

If we get 30 rooms rented for the convention, we get the weekday rate of $89.

I think we need to get a couple lists going - how many people plan on attending and have a stated preference (for whatever reason) for Atlanta or DC.

If only five people can easily make Atlanta and twenty people can make DC, that may determine the feasibility of location.

Having been to my share of conventions, gatherings, and family reunions, things that count in my mind are:

-food within an acceptable walking distance-- and at an acceptable price!
-easy accessibility to good public transportation that goes to places we might want to sightsee
-an airport shuttle really helps
-cheap enough that you aren't worrying it's not worth what you spent the whole time you're there (even though you know it's always worth it to see friends)

Other than that, I'm open to pretty much anything, but I would really prefer Atlanta, since I probably can't afford DC.

Airport shuttle!!!

Seriously, I think any hotel we are in needs an airport shuttle. Without one, the arriving day and the leaving day are horrid for the people who live there. The fun things we can arrange transportation for, but airport --> hotel --> airport needs to NOT be dependent on the car people. For KamaCon, AJ spend two solid days at the airport. There's got to be a way to avoid that.

There are at least 347 hotels and 41 motels (not counting some seperate locations that are chains) in the Atlanta area. Does someone want to help me narrow down what area I should be looking in before I start calling people and asking about convention rates? (Not that I'd do it tonight, but tomorrow is another day.)

Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :

no. the shuttle costs.
but hey, you have enough people to drive you. dont sweat transport at this point.

Olivia has a huge vehicle that fits 68 people. and her oldest son volunteered to drive.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

It depends on how long it is. TWo days, and we really don't leave the hotel much. More than that, and people can plan outings. The funnest times are when everyone is together, though. We have to make sure the conference room is big enough for everyone to be in there comfortably and still some floor space for dancing and fencing.

---

I know people are able to drive, but anything over about fifteen people means half a dozen trips to the airport. If the shuttle costs five dollars or less, then that's okay. If it's more, then maybe a hotel with an airport shuttle?

That way Olivia can play and think about people instead of everyone's schedules.

As far as I'm concerned, the weekend of the 12th would be just peachy. That leaves 2 weekends in between that and the wedding, and we're probably not going to do much better than that with all the stuff people are trying to plan. It's also 2 weekends after the henna party, so as far as I'm concerned it's ideal.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

The twelth is fine with me. Heck, almost all of its fine with me, but if WenchCon is March and The Wedding is April, I don't think I'm going to make the henna party. *goes off to cry*

I'm not saying it won't work... everyone was posting really fast right then, and I didn't see it had been suggested.

The henna party is 2/19. If WenchCon is going to be close to something, I'd rather it be close to that, since much fewer people will be coming, mostly midwesterners. I probably wouldn't make a WenchCon on 3/4, but that's okay, I can come next year... I just really, really don't want it the weekend before the wedding.

Honestly, I think any weekend in March would work for me and Ben (Except Easter. That was an oversight. I never know when Easter is until the month of, at least.) As long as it's in our general area.

The 6th is my birthday, but I'd be happy to spend it with you guys.

Last year they made everyone wear costumes. Costumes were brought for those of us who did not have the foresight to bring our own.

Really, do you think I wanted to wear a beard?

katharina, if Coccinelle is busy with stuff, I'll be happy to make you a costume, provided you spend a Saturday shopping with me (you're going to have to pick out and buy the fabric, but I'll help) and we do a fitting that day (I use duct tape...)

Okay, so I'll stand out a bit, since I don't know much about LOTR and will probably lean more toward just the plain "wench" look I'm used to from being a rennie. Close enough, though.

I'm not terribly worried about it. Only about 5% of women give birth on their due date. [Razz]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yes, but a significant proportion are within 3 days either way of their due date.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

So the percentage of women who give birth within one day of their due date is what, one third of the way between 5% and significant (which can't be too significant, as 33% of all babies are born outside of two weeks on either side).

*does quick Frisco math*

I can't imagine that any other day than the due date has more than its 5% probability, but assuming the day before and the day after do, there's only a 15% chance I'll miss it if I go away for a weekend.

A quick run through Murphy's Law ups the percentage to just over 100%, though. Oh, well. The other little sis is due in June. I'll try not to miss that one. [Big Grin]

Hotel with airport shuttle. I'm serious - unless somebody wants to be chauffer that weekend and that's all (and who would want to do that?), I think getting a hotel with an airport shuttle is the single thing most conducive to WenchCon happiness.

I second that, Kate-- we're all going to have different flights, there's no way that three people want to be going back and forth driving everyone.

Plus, if some of us stay an extra day to save money on the flight, people won't have to rearrange their plans to take care of us.

There are usually plenty of hotels near the airport that do it. I have already said I'd be happy to call and find out all about all their rates if it would save others time (I'm a stay-home mom, with not much to do, and we have unlimited long-distance, so it won't cost). But if someone else would like to, I'm happy to let them.

We can still all try to find a different weekend... I guess... *is sad because obviously not everyone is going to be able to make any weekend, but she'd like to meet everyone*

Please, anyone who wants to find a hotel and is willing to make calls, feel free. What I found was that the hotels with airport service are closer to the city, which means they are either more expensive or fairly skanky.

So it's a trade off, but if it's one most people are willing to make, then It's cool by me.

*Sigh*

What about May? Longer wait, but that gives us more time to plan stuff and get cheap flights or whatever. It'd be out of the way of the wedding, but probably still not too hot.

What do you guys say?

Okay, aside from the weekends in March (2nd, 3rd and Easter weekend), and the weekend of bobndanafest, I'm good with anything else. I've got a friend who works for Delta and get get tix cheap. [Smile]

If I can go, I volunteer as a shuttle because I can get a good rate on an SUV from Enterprise. I found that renting a car was a GREAT experience. You had transportation flexibility and could help out others. If it came to it, instead of going for a skankier or more expensive hotel, we could pool money for a couple SUV rentals and do it that way. I'd volunteer to be a driver, since I'm somewhat familiar with the Atlanta area as I grew up there.

Hence Ben.

I love that I sucked ben into this.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Okay.

A minivan or SUV can be rented from Enterprise on the first weekend in March (was using it to get rates) for $212 for Friday through Monday.

So, whoever is doing hotel math, can you compare that vs. an airport shuttle enabled more expensive hotel?

Olivia, I can also run hotels by Leanne, as she works in the crap-areas of Atlanta, being a paramedic. [Smile]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

The advantage of the hotel is not the price - it's that someone doesn't have to sacrifice being involved in the fun in order to play chauffeur.

Jamie, are you really offering to be at the beck and call of everyone the whole weekend?

If it means I can go? Then by all means, yes.

I'd also suspect that most flight would be on Friday and Sunday.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

That's flights in. Most flights out will be Sunday and Monday. That means every day of WenchCon, you will be driving people back and forth thirty minutes each way to the airport.

And if people's flights leave two and a half hours apart...you'll either be spending the entire day in the car, for all four days (which I don't see happening), or else people will hang out at airports by themselves a lot and not be able to spend that last two and a half hours with everyone.
---

What we need are options - how much the different options cost.

I think the two most popular dates bandied about are the first and second weekends in March. Some wenches can only come the first weekend, and some can only come the second weekend.

No one wants to make a definite decision (including me). I think that part of the discussion has been tabled pending new information or a deadline due to a reluctance to exclude anyone.

I'm going to call any hotel reasonably near the airport (in case we do decide to have someone drive, it'll be no more than 5-10 minutes away) that has meeting facilities and find out about shuttles, meeting facilities, rates (for both March and May) whether there's a discount for groups, if so, how many do we need, etc., and send it on to Olivia for weeding out of undesirable locations and such, and then she can choose the best option.

What's our target price on rooms? And do we think we can fill 15 rooms?

[ December 08, 2004, 04:57 PM: Message edited by: ketchupqueen ]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

In my opinion, it would be nice to find something less than $100/night for rooms. That way those of us who are cheap can split it 4 ways and pay $25/night or less. We should be able to fill 15 rooms, I think.

Also, I would expect up to $150/night for a conference room, with that price going down depending how many rooms we fill. Any more than that, or $150 without a break for more rooms, probably wouldn't be worth it unless the rooms were significantly under $100/night.

Of course, Atlanta prices might be different... but I wouldn't think it would be too much more than Chicago. See if you can find something in that ballpark, and a airport shuttle for $10 per direction or less. Or right on a train line from the airport with no transfers required, even those of us unfamiliar with the area and/or directionally impaired should be able to manage that. So that's the ideal, and we'll see how close we can get to it. [Smile]

(I'm still down as a maybe. I'll come if it's possible, but I'm not getting my hopes up.)

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Okay, I found a place 1 mile from the airport with a free shuttle that will give us a group rate of $69 a night and a meeting room free if we fill 15 rooms. The meeting room can be arranged with chairs for only up to 50 people, but can be arranged "theater style" for up to 90.

How does that sound?

(I will keep calling to see if I find something better, though.)

Just to try and keep the confusion down, email me with your preferences for a date at trevor_medina@hotmail.com.

What dates are good for you, what dates you absolutely cannot do, etc.

If you already know your hotel room preference - single, double, sharing a room, etc., please include that as well. Any special accomodations should also be noted - Ketchup will be bringing her little spud, for example.

My only question is what kind of rooms are those? 2 double beds, or only 1? For that price, some people would probably go only 2 to a room, but it's still good to know if we could do 4.

But yeah, that sounds awesome, as long as it's in a decent part of town with some food choices within walking distance.

Oh, one other thing to check on... I don't think it would be a deal breaker, but nice to know if they have an "activities" area. At KamaCon I don't think too many people used the pool, but the meeting room started to get cramped every now and then and a lot of us went down to the pool area to play ping-pong and pool. That was fun. [Smile] 'Cept when Eddie and I got busted quietly playing ping-pong at midnight. [Frown]

Well, there's also, apparently, a Nascar race or something in March, so things will be crazy in the airports and all the second weekend. We also might have higher rates if we try to go then, plus many places are already full.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

That's the rate for either a queen or 2 doubles. The lady is going to email me, but I think she did say walking distance to lots of places.

*goes off to call more places*

If we stick close to the airport, yes - what are the odds a hotel on the north side of town would run a shuttle service?

Just out of curiosity, is someone close by going to look at whatever place we are considering before we make a decision? You know, so we know that the place is clean and well kept and all... [Smile]

I think that would almost be required - considering how many women we will have attending WenchCon. [Big Grin]

I can borrow a friend's digital camera and inspect the site once we pick a likely location.

Well, apparently people who work hotel sales in Atlanta leave before 5:30, 'cause I'm not getting them. I left some messages, so I may find a better deal tomorrow, but right now it looks like the only one I found with really good rates was the Wellesley Inn and Suites Atlanta Airport. The sales rep was really helpful and friendly, too, which I can't say for all of them.

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

It varies - some run 9-5, others till 6.

Apparently a local college had a "mock convention registration" exercise that torqued off the sales rep I spoke to. [Big Grin]

hotel shuttle = no big deal. i volunteer to be the guy who "wont have much fun" by shuttling everybody kat, dont worry about it. go for the wingate.

We are just looking at possibilities here...

I did like the badmiton and ping pong courts at KamaCon.

---

I love the idea of sneaking across balconies to each other's rooms. Maybe we can make rules in order to have fun breaking them.

1. No sneaking into each other's rooms.
2. No stealing all the clothes while someone is in the shower.
3. No ping pong at midnight. [Wink]
4. No handing out commemorative underwear.
5. No embarassing the Wenchlings.

One advantage of the WinGate was that it was close to Olivia's house.

The advantage of being close to the airport is that transportation would be greatly eased.

Okay, earlier someone said $75 per room, plus $50 a day for the conference room. Is the extra stuff worth the extra cost? 'Cause it's a very small difference, except for the shuttle.

Ketchup - not a problem on either account. You've volunteered a lot of work and on behalf of the past and future Wenchlings, we appreciate it. The fact you're chatty is just an added plus. [Big Grin]

The prices for the Wingate are located earlier in this thread, although it couldn't hurt to confirm both the prices and whether or not they run an airport shuttle.

I can do that tomorrow, or you can, Trevor. Also, you might want to check availability on our tentative dates (March or May), since there were issues with that at some places.

Virginia Avenue isn't that nice, particularly if it's the one I'm thinking of.

There is one, maybe two fast food places nearby and the rest is lower income neighborhoods of which I wouldn't want my (important female) to walk through unattended.

Posted by xnera (Member # 187) on :

I very much liked the Wingate.

If it's NOT at the Wingate, then it is absolutely vital that wherever we end up going has a good sized meeting room. KamaCon's meeting room was too small, and impacted my enjoyment of the event. I couldn't talk to anyone because I couldn't hear them, due to all the background noise. [Frown]

If we had used airport shuttles at the last WenchCon, then I wouldn't have had the opportunity to hang out and chat with Olivia one-on-one, which was one of the highlights of the trip.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Okay, I'm back.

If we'd used shuttles at KamaCon, someone wouldn't have had to spend three hours of a crazy day searching for one person at the airport.

Absolutely - large meeting room = vital.

----

Is that the objection? That the shuttles would seem too impersonal? I think the desire to always be met at the airport. I can see that.

I just think that it is going to end up the job of someone sweet, introverted, and responsible to play chauffer that weekend. I'm not worried it's going to be me (see list of qualities), but I do think it is going to be someone like that since that's what's happened every other time. Surely, surely there is a way to get everything.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

*through clenched teeth*

Yes, small meeting rooms could get cramped. I could see that.

sounds like alot of people enjoyed the wingate. and it sounds like everybody had a great time last time. so...why change a good thing?

[ December 09, 2004, 10:48 AM: Message edited by: Ben ]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

That seems to be a main reason that a lot of people don't want to consider change. While I'm sure the excellence of the locale contributed to the overall good experience, isn't the point to have fun together? And couldn't that be accomplished, and an excellent experience be had, somewhere else as well?

It's like jeans. If you have one pair of jeans, and you like to wear them, doesn't it make sense to try buying another pair of jeans? Maybe a slightly different style to add to your wardrobe options? Ones that fit you well when you try them on, but are slightly different, and have, say, convenient pockets that your other jeans don't have?

It makes sense to me...

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Well, let's see what all are options are.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Posted by xnera (Member # 187) on :

No, I don't think a shuttle would be too impersonal. Heck, I would take public transportation by myself, if there was a way to get from the airport to whichever hotel we end up with. I do see the value of discussing alternatives. And I do agree that transportation was a serious issue at KamaCon. I wasn't around to hear most of it, but what I heard about sounded like there was way too much chauffering going on, which I'm sure made the event less fun for a select few.

I don't think there were as many problems with chauffering at WenchCon II. It felt like a lot of folks really tried to group their arrival times together, so they could carpool. I think if we planned carefully, we could make do without airport shuttles. But we should absolutely consider finding a place that either has shuttles, is on a public transportation route (we took the Marta often during the Olympics. I liked it), or would cut down on the transit time for those carpooling or chauffering.

I am not opposed to finding a new place. I just feel that the Wingate had a lot of what I wanted. Comfortable rooms, a large meeting room, an equally large continental breakfast area that we used for spillover, lots of stuff within walking distance. These are all things I would like to see with whatever hotel we decide on. And if it's not the Wingate, then I would really like for someone to go check out the hotel in person before we sign a contract, so we can make sure it is suitable to our needs.

I would love to sightsee in Atlanta again sometime. However, I would be quite content to just sit at the hotel and chitchat with folks. I'm going to visit with people, not to see the city. So my primary concern is making sure the hotel is comfortable enough to hang out at all weekend.

The Wellesley was on my list last year, but for some reason didn't make the cut. I don't think it was one I checked out but didn't like. I think they may have been the ones that never answered the phone.

KQ is the coolest. *cheers*

One of us needs to find the place and scope the surroundings. I'm cool with the change, if it's a safe area with stuff close by.

And the Wingate was actually about 20-25 min from my house, but it was near the interstate, easy to find and in the middle of one of the biggest commercial areas on the North Side. Plus, they gave us the meeting room for half of what otgher places wanted, since I could not be sure how many rooms would be booked. I think it ended up being less than ten, since about 15 young men shared, like, two rooms. [Big Grin] I think the total was about 7 or 8 rooms, and two of them were just my family.

I'll contact Kelly and see if they could even do us the same deal this year, since it was partly based on it being the off season.

Posted by Olivetta (Member # 6456) on :

We didn't start planning because I wasn't planning on it at all, what with my mom dying and other family stuff. I'm sorry if it puts anybody out over much, but not doing it is always an option. I can't even do it the second week in March. People said February was too soon, though I think we could book a hotel, it wouldn't leave time for cheap flights and other arrangments.

PS I told Ron the wellesley was on Virginia ave and he laughed. Then he said it would be fine as long as we didn't leave the hotel. O_o

But really, I'm cool with not doing this if it's only going to make people mad with the arrangments. I just missed everybody and would like to do it again sometime.

Hmmm. I truly think it's time for an executive decision - perhaps by Trevor and Olivia since they live in Atlanta?

Seriously, what's the problem with just using the place that was used last time? I've heard lots of people saying it was great; it seems unproductive to go round and round for 9 pages voting on a place when a good one seems to exist - plus all this is making more work for Trevor and Olivia because despite other people making calls, *they* are the ones that have to physically go there and check it out.
