I'm putting together a proposal for a show of my art at our campus gallery, and the work I'm submitting is all about food. Well, it's about food, kitchens, women, and some lovely psychological undertones to all of the above.
As part of the show, which is kind of an installation piece in the least obnoxious sense of installation art, I'll be playing a CD of music about food, and the songs I've picked so far are mostly jazz, because jazz singers seem to knot only sing about food a lot, but also seem to sing about the psychological undertones I'm going for.
Here is the list of the songs I've got so far, and I'm wondering if anyone has any that would be in the same vein that I should add:
"Kitchen Man" - Bessie Smith "The Frim Fram Sauce" - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong "Come On-a My House" - Jodi Stevens (originally Rosemary Clooney) "Beautiful Soup" - Celeste Krenz "The Big Kitchen" - Deborah Liv Johnson "Everybody Eats When They Come to My House" - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra "Sunshine Cake" - Frank Sinatra "Mangos" - Rosemary Clooney
I've also got waiting in the wings the following two, because I'm not entirely convinced they fit the groove:
"Soul Kitchen" - The Doors "Cornflake Girl" - Northwestern University Purple Haze (covering Tori Amos)
What do you think? Anything I'm missing?

REM's "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" has some lyrics about food, though it's not all about food. It's a favourite song of mine though

Just guessing here...
"Cheeseburger in Paradise" by Jimmy Buffet wouldn't really fit in here, would it?

That, and "I Will Play for Gumbo" on one of Jimmy Buffett's more recent albums (Beach House on the Moon, IIRC).

"It's Gonna be Dinner Soon," Tom Chapin "Gravy on my Mashed Potatoes," I'm not sure if that's the actual title, or who the artist is.

I'm thinking that TMBG's Dinner Bell probably wouldn't strike quite the right tone.

Here are some snippets of lyrics of the songs I've already got:
quote:Come on-a my house my house, I'm gonna give you candy Come on-a my house, my house, I'm gonna give you Marriage ring and a pomegranate too ah
-"Come On-a My House"
quote:Mangos, papaya, ches- nuts from the fire In my house of straw I have so much more
Pie from the peach and I fix in the kitchen Each bite is just right for your appetite
Now if you like-a the way I cook And if you like-a the way I look Then step inside my shady nook And you'll find mangos and papayas, anything your heart desires.
-"Mangos"
quote:I don't want pork chops and bacon. That won't awaken My appetite inside. I want the Frim Fram Sauce With the oss and fay With shifafa on the side.
Well, you know, A fella's really got to eat, And a fella should eat right. Five will get you ten I'm gonna feed myself right tonight.
-"Fram Fram Sauce"

quote:Well, at lunchtime you can always find me At the Whole Earth Vitamin Bar Just sucking on my plain white yogurt From my hand thrown pottery jar And sippin' a little hand pressed cider With a carrot stick for dessert And wiping my face in a natural way On the sleeve of my peasant shirt Oh, yeah
Ah, but when that clock strikes midnight And I'm all by myself I work that combination on my secret hideaway shelf And I pull out some Fritos corn chips Dr Pepper and an ole Moon Pie Then I sit back in glorious expectation Of a genuine junk food high
Oh yeah, in the daytime I'm Mr Natural Just as healthy as I can be Oh, but at night I'm a junk food junkie Good lord have pity on me

"Come On-a My House" would be a very very creepy song if sung by a man, especially with a "dirty old man" voice.

Peggy Lee has a version of Black Coffee, too, but my favorite is by a lesser-known signer who's name I can't remember right now... if I come up with it, I'll let you know.

When my Dad was a kid in my Grandma’s home She taught him how to start with an old soup bone You put the onions, carrots, celery, and water in the pot It only takes a little of whatever you’ve got “There ain’t no way to hurry it,” my Grandma would remind “Anything worth waiting for is gonna take time”
It smells like winter at our house Smells like winter at our house Smells like winter at our house Smells like soup
Bean soup, chicken soup with macaroni Cream of broccoli, minestrone Potato soup, tomato soup, chowder made of clam Miso soup, mushroom soup, split pea with ham Bouillon, scallion, tom kha ghai with lemongrass Matzoth ball, chilibean, cream of asparagus
So it doesn’t even matter if the cold winds blow If the rivers freeze and there’s three feet of snow From my Dad and my Grandma it’s what I got The put a whole lotta love in that old black pot In my mind I see a little boy, a distant winter day He’s standing at the door and I can hear him say . . .
It smells like winter at our house Smells like winter at our house Smells like winter at our house Smells like soup

I have been known to leave that CD in my car for months. Hobbes hates it. Not in the general disdain he has for all my music, but in the very specific, "what on earth is this noise and why are you subjecting me to it?" sense.
I'm not exactly a Moxy Fruvuos fan, but they have a couple that might fit with the rest of your CD. Green Eggs and Ham or Johnny Saucep'n, maybe?

Ooo . . . from the same CD as the other one:
"Supper's on the Table"
quote:Shadows growing longer, light is growing dim Supper's on the table everybody come in Been playing at the river and I'm tired to the bone She's calling all the children home
Chorus
Home to the table and the big, black pot Everybody's got enough, 'though we ain't got a lot No one is forgotten, no one is alone When she's calling all the children home
. . .
Bridge:
I could hear her voice in the middle of a crowd It was never too late and it was never too loud Smelled just like home by the time we hit the door There was always just enough but there was always room for more
. . .
Last Chorus:
Home to the table, home to the feast Where the last are first and the greatest are the least Where the rich will envy what the poor have got Everybody's got enough, 'though we ain't got a lot No one is forgotten, no one is alone When we're calling all the children home Gathered 'round the table and the big, black pot Everybody's got enough, 'though we ain't got a lot No one is forgotten, no one is alone From the shacks in Soweto to the ice of Nome From Baghdad City to the streets of Rome When we're calling all the children home

The Potato Song by Cheryl Wheeler
quote:They're red, they're white, they're brown They get that way underground There can't be much to do So now they have blue ones too
We don't care what thay look like we'll eat them Any way they can fit on our plate Every way we can conjure to heat them We're delighted and think they're just great
(Chorus) PO ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to po ta to
Sometimes we ditch the skin To eat what it's holding in Sometimes we'd rather please Have just the outside with cheese
They have eyes but they do not have faces I don't know if their feelings get hurt By just hanging around in dark places Where that only can stare at the dirt
(Repeat Chorus)
I guess the use is scant For other parts of the plant But that which grows in view Is eating potato too
I imagine them under their acres Out in Idaho and up in Maine Maybe wondering if they'll be bakers Or knishes or latkes or plain
(Repeat Chorus)
Sung to the tune of the mexican Hat dance

Somewhere we have a food themed mix CD that's probably not going to work with what you have at all. If I'm still thinking of it when I get home, I'll see what's actually on it. (Besides TMBG's Dinner Bell and Morphine's French Fries with Pepper, heh, maybe I'll think of the rest of them while I'm sitting here avoiding work)

May or may not be what you want:
quote:Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches Movin' to the country, Gonna eat me a lot of peaches Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches
Peaches come from a can, they were put there by a man In a factory downtown If I had my little way, I'd eat peaches every day...
("Peaches," The Presidents of the United States of America)
quote:Don't go to church on Sunday Don't get on my knees to pray Don't memorize the books of the Bible I got my own special way Bit I know Jesus loves me Maybe just a little bit more
I fall on my knees every Sunday At Zerelda Lee's candy store
Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus Make me feel good inside Got to be a chocolate Jesus Keep me satisfied...
("Chocolate Jesus," Tom Waits)
quote:I went to church last Sunday So I could sing and pray But something quite unusual Happened on that day ... You know the preacher he kept preaching He told us I have one more thing to say Children before you think of leaving You better think about the judgment day
Now everyone got nervous Because everyone was hungry too
...And the preacher he kept preaching Long is the struggle, hard the fight And I prayed, father please forgive me And then I stood up and with all my might I sang
To the lord let praises be It's time for dinner now let's go eat We've got some beans and some good cornbread And I listened to what the preacher said Now it's to the Lord let praised be It's time for dinner now let's go eat...
("Church Lyrics," Lyle Lovett)
[all are in the sort of happy/quirky mood, likely not mellow enough anyway]
