Interesting before and after pictures. I got this e-mailed to me from my planetary science-geology geek friends, who thought the breach in the barrier island was an interesting phenomenon.

MPH, I agree, but on the flip side...
One of my college professors (whom I've now know for 21 years) had a home on the far side of US 1 in Central Florida (on the Indian River). Notice I say had. I talked to him on the phone yesterday as he was celebrating having electricity, and air conditioning for the first time since Frances. He's celebrating the air conditioning because maybe they can salvage some of the drywall in the house. However, as the entire foundation twisted, it's likely his house is toast. No actual flooding, just incredible amounts of sustained wind.
Mind, I'm not trying to flame or incite at all. It's just that there's a real human face attached to the storm damage.
In one of my Oceanography classes, the professor was bemoaning the fact that many houses in South Florida were built on the foundations of homes that had been decimated in previous "once in a lifetime" storms. "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it." Apology in advance for mis-quote.

I find it more than interesting that they are being so hard hit just before a Presidential election. And also comparing a map of the 2000 vote by county in the hardest hit areas with the path of the Hurricanes made for some interesting conspiracy theories as well.
It's probably just a horrible coincidence, but it does paint an interesting picture.
