I will be hosting a pre-wedding henna party for dkw in Minneapolis sometime in January or February. Between my place and my parent's house, we will be able to house everyone who's likely to come, although some people might end up on air mattresses on the floor. [Smile]

The henna party itself is girls only, but if any gentlemen would like to make the trip I'm sure there will be other activities, and Bob will probably be in town as well, if y'all had a mind to entertain him while we are otherwise engaged.

Details will be hammered out a little closer to actual time, but I'd like to get it on our calendars now, since I know we're all oh-so busy! Available weekends for dkw and myself are:

January 15
February 12
February 19
February 26

So! Who's coming? When works best for you?

Oh, and for those of you it makes a difference to... this is a no-candid-photography affair. If someone wishes to have a picture taken of their finished artwork, that can certainly be accommodated. But photographs will be strictly at the request of the to-be-photographed

Wow! No candid photos? I don't know if I can do that..... [Smile]

I'm not one of these people that know my life's schedule six months in advance, so I have no idea which weekend will work for me at this point. I will just go with whatever everyone else picks.

Sara, would you mind a stowaway?

Assuming Tom is willing, and I assume Sophie will be bottling at that point, I'd love a girls getaway.

Otherwise, Tom may be interested in going (haven't talked to him yet) and we may both show up. [Smile]

I'm good with whatever weekend. We don't have any plans as of yet.

I got a beautiful henna design on my hand this weekend at the Chesterton Oz fest (as in Wizard of). *glows*

I'm not really one to schedule this far in advance, either... but I'm not going to the camping trip, so I need to be able to start looking forward to my next hatrack get-together.

Yeah, sure, Christy! Road-trip. [Big Grin] A road trip would be a blast with you.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Uh could we make it a larger scale road trip? I do have a mini van and if Vana wants to come too there would be room for 6 people pretty comfortably. And I don't want to drive that far by myself. Although I might check out plane tickets.

AJ

Posted by Sara Sasse (Member # 6804) on :

I would happily caravan, if you like. I get sweaty in large groups of people without an easy "out" -- this makes me a poor prospect both for a large road trip in one vehicle and for an S&M orgy.

(er, not to say that AJ is a dominatrix, or that she has an illicit stash of butter, or anything. [Monkeys] I never kiss and tell. )

Seriously, we could caravan it and stop for rest breaks together. We could also do some kind of game (finding fruits to fit each letter of the alphabet, cheesiest 80s songs, whatever) where we compare lists at the rest breaks. That would be cool.

(would walkie-talkies be too geeky?)

(I'd also be okay withdriving alone, BTW. Me, Leonard Cohen, and my deep, morose thoughts -- you might have to dose me with a little sunshine once I get there, but it's an appealling route, too.)

Yup, I am planning on coming! Just been lazy about replying. My life is rarely scheduled that far in advance. The only thing I can think of that might be in the way is my nephew's birthday, but he's at the end of January so it's not likely they'd have his party on one of those dates. Unless they decide to combine the boys' parties -- my other nephew is the end of December.

Unless a miracle happens, I would need to hitch a ride with someone. Would be totally willing to take public transportation to someone's house or whatnot, so nobody would have to go out of their way to pick me up.

Oh, and I have a henna kit that I've never used. I will bring it along! Not sure if the mud will still be good, but there's some lovely designs in the little instruction book.

Uh -- I have one question.

Just how long does this Henna art stay on? Can you remove it or do you have to let it wear off?

Because my company has strong policies against visible body art (I have to wear things that always cover my tattoo -- but that isn't hard) -- however if we are going to do hands or arm or whatever -- I might have to pass.

But that doesn't mean I can't come along and just watch.

Farmgirl

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

xnera, yay! Henna has a pretty short shelf-life, so I'll be buying a big supply at the Indian grocery just before. But the little design guides are always nice, especially for people who haven't done it beore. And, sorry about spelling your name wrong.

Farmgirl, it needs to wear off, and takes a couple of weeks. But you don't have to do your hands... armbands are fun, or ankle designs. I had a really cool one on the nape of my neck once that only showed when I wore my hair up. Or, you can certainly just come and hang out. Up to you. [Smile]

Posted by xnera (Member # 187) on :

No worries on the mispelling of the name. I don't expect people to get it correct, since it's such an odd combination of letters. [Big Grin]

A friend and I did henna once back in college. Being the math geeks that we were, I ended up with the Sierpinski Triangle on my leg. Heh. But it was fun! And yeah, it lasted a few weeks. Now I'd go for something a bit more feminine, I think.

I would LOVE to come - I just can't plan that far in advance. I get nervous if I have to make plans that are farther than a month or so in advance, and I break out in a rash if I have to buy a plane ticket more than 3 weeks ahead.

So.

I will probably come, but I just can't say right now. I don't know what my life will be like then.

Is it close enough to finalize dates yet? I have to take the January one out, so the choices are:

February 19
February 26

Anyone else come up with any new conflicts? (Anyone who's planning on coming, that is.)

I'm in, as long as Dan says it's okay! Sorry, I didn't see this before now! I've not got any plans yet for those weekends (I don't even have an '05 calendar yet), so whatever works, I'll block out.

Don't know if Dan'll want to come up and hang out with Bob or not. If he does, we're up for carpooling or caravaning. If it's just me, I'd prefer to carpool rather than driving by myself.

I can't come. It's a little far. But I do appreciate the invite . . .

Having said that, I used to work at a couple of hotels, and during the wedding season, we had a fair number of brides checking in with henna. Of course, the city had a large Indian population, so it wasn't at all surprising. The first time I saw it, I was surprised, but it always looked so beautiful.

Now, I'm living in the land of henna.

So my vote? An all-girls henna party sounds way cool!

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

I'm thinking that if I'm going to take time off in April (for the wedding trip) then I'd better not also make the trip in February. We have some major projects going at work, and it will be hard to get any vacation time at all during the first six months of next year.

Farmgirl

Okay, the weekend of 2/19 it is!

quidscribis, while I'm not surprised you won't be there, it would have been awfully cool.

Farmgirl, all things considered, I'm not surprised you're going to have to pass either, but I'm disappointed. I know it would be a really long drive for you, and you can't use all your vacation on Hatrack stuff. [Smile] But we'll see you at the wedding, and that's more important anyway!

Posted by Theca (Member # 1629) on :

I have no idea if I could come and I probably won't know until February. I don't even know my call schedule yet. I am also completely certain I don't want to actually use any henna. But if I can make it, and if nobody minds that I don't do henna, I'll keep watching my schedule to see if it can work out.

I won't know til a couple weeks before if I can definitely make it. I guess I'll take one of my two vacation days left for this. I need to use it on something fun.

AJ

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

AJ, doesn't your vacation reset in January? Vacation is supposed to reset in January, so you can waste it foolishly. [Big Grin] Regardless, I agree that you should use it on something fun... and selfishly think this is an excellent opportunity!

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Nope, in my company (which does a lot of other things effed up like sick leave too) your vacation resets on your anniversary with the company (mine's in march or april). At 5, 10 and 15 etc years you get an additional day off for your anniversary date with the company too.

AJ

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Only an additional day? Man, mine goes up a week at a time, at I think 4 and 7 years, and then I forget because it isn't really applicable to me. I'm approaching 6 years now, if I make it that far. Of course, the rest of our time off policy is all screwed up, so whatever.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

An additional day on top of your regular vacation allotment [Wink]

AJ

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Oh and I think we get 3 weeks at 6 years. And then four at like 15.

AJ

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Ah, okay. That makes more sense.

We start at 4 weeks and then go up from there, but our sick time is included in that. So if I don't get sick ever, I currently have 5 weeks of vacation a year, but I can't plan on that because I have to keep some in reserve in case I get sick. But I don't get sick very often, so it works out pretty well for me. And if I stay another year or so, it'll go up to 6 weeks... I think we top out at 9 weeks, but I'm not sure. I know it's enough that the people who have full vacation have a hard time using it all.

I had a henna butterfly put on the inside of my ankle for my wedding. Does anyone know the tradition behind the Bride being decorated with henna? The reason is that as long as the henna is still visible - the bride is still considered to be on her honeymoom... therefore she has no official duties until it wears off. I.E. no dishes, no cooking, no cleaning, nothing for as long as the henna remains visible. I truly like that part of it, I just wished that it worked here int he States. Basically family and friends do all the work until the henna wears off, then the woman is no longer a bride - she is a wife. [Razz] (my butterfly lasted 2 weeks and 4 days, but that was because I kept putting oil on it... if you wash it [scrub it] every day it will go away pretty fast, but if you use vegetable oil and apply it with a cotton ball every day...it can stay for weeks - even with bathing!) Happy henna-ing [Smile]

*bumpity*

I won't know until the 22nd of this month whether I can come or not, even though I was pretty much figuring as a definite before. Events have conspired since to change plans. (Ciara and Jake bred themselves to each other without my consent [Wink] ) You see, if Ciara is pregnant, she is due Feb 23rd. Plus or minus 3 days in either direction is not uncommon. And if she did go into labor that weekend we'd be looking at possibly mildly premature puppies so it is even more important that I'm there.

I *think* she's pregnant and overall I'm not unhappy about the pregnancy even though it was unplanned. (No puppy abortions or anything, not worth the risk to her.) But, I won't know for sure until January 22nd when we have an ultrasound. If she is pregnant and puppies are emminent it puts a kink in plans where I am concerned, though I'll definitely still be at the wedding!

[Frown] I'm sorry, Vana, but as I said in the other thread that's why I'm alerting you to the possibility now... As I said in this and other threads it was an "unplanned" pregnancy, I didn't really *want* puppies this particular February. I had other things going on!

I should have enough homes for them though I think, if they are coming. It depends on how many are show quality and how many are pet quality.

I just thought of a remote posibility that would work if you guys had leeway in your schedules. The only way I would be able to come if she *is* pregnant, is if we bumped the date a week earlier, to the 11th. But, this is kind of a late time to be doing that and I suspect peoples schedules have already become too rigid for that.

And there is the possiblity she isn't pregnant and I'm getting you guys worried about nothing, however the signs to this point say she is, though it isn't confirmable til the ultrasound.

So, what are you Chicago-area lasses going to do for transport? Christy and Sara are a pretty obvious pair; would either of them be willing to take riders?

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

It's a good thought, but I'm not going to be able to take more than just Christy. However, we could caravan (i.e., do multiple cars and drive together), and that might allay some fears about driving in winter.

Seriously, unless there is a snowfall that day, the roads are generally perfectly clear. They have a lot of infrastructure to ensure that things keep running smoothly here.

Caravaning sounds like a viable possibility. Sounds like Vana, blackwolve, and xnera were all interested in going. Anyone willing to drive with us? If there are no cars amongst y'all that you trust for a long trip, how about a $19/day weekend special for a rental? I can help figure out how to swing that, or I can help coordinate bus/train schedules.

Actually, you can pick up a mid-size car at O'Hare through Enterprise for $21/day over the weekend, unlimited miles in IN, IL, and WI. Outside those states, you have 200 free miles per day, so it would essentially be unlimited mileage for this trip.

There are also $9.99/day cars from Enterprise locations in the suburbs, but they are selling out pretty quickly at that special rate. They also would come with effectively free mileage.

I have no problems driving in winter, or for long distances--I just don't have a car to do so. So one of those rentals would be perfect. [Smile] I thought about a rental myself, but thought it would be waaaaay too expensive, or would not allow that many miles.

One problem with a rental is that I don't have car insurance, so I would have to pay for it on the rental. I don't know if that would restrict me from getting one of the cheap deals.

*sigh* I guess I can drive, if people can get to Rockford. I could take up to three people with me, though luggage might be a little tight. I'll have to ask for help with gas, though. And I'll have to have really good directions before we head out.

How long is this drive, anyway? If we start out Friday morning and leave on Sunday, will that be okay? Or were people planning to leave Saturday and come home on Monday? Or leave Friday night and come home...I have on idea. We need to figure it out, though, so I know what time to request off work.

For the people who are coming, what sort of a time frame works for you? Are you taking off work Friday and driving up in the morning? It's almost exactly 6 hours from Chicago. How long will you be able to stay?

dkw has to head back to Iowa Saturday night in order to preach Sunday morning. So if you could come Friday during the day, that would maximize time with her, which is kinda the point. [Big Grin] Everyone is, of course, welcome to stay over Saturday and head back Sunday sometime. "Sometime" meaning "certainly not before brunch."

It looks like it will be a small enough group that we can all just stay at dkw's and my parent's house... I'll come and stay there, too, for the duration. My house isn't big enough, and that way we won't have to split up if we want to stay up half the night giggling. Also, they have a fabulous sledding hill and a firepit, so you might want to bring outdoors clothes. Um, and a swimsuit. Anyone who is interested, of course, can take a side-trip to my place to see my remodeling projects.

*hee* Apparently I'm slow.

If people can come up Friday morning and stay 'til Sunday, it would probably work out best. If people have to work Friday, we'll work around it.

It's 6 hours from Chicago. It's really good road, unless there's an active snowstorm I wouldn't worry about it.

Directions are easy. I will provide you with a map, directions, and phone numbers before you leave. [Smile]

If Vana and xnera come together (with xnera finding her way to Chicago and then chipping in for gas), then we can see if we can figure out how to caravan together to St. Paul. I can also chip in on gas for Vana -- just let me know how much you need. It looks like it's about 250 miles from Madison, which means about a tank or so each way, very roughly.

Christy and I were looking at going on Friday and coming back Sunday. We'll take you up on the Friday night accomodations, but I may have a hotel room voucher at the Millenium hotel (downtown?) to use up. I haven't been there yet, but it sounds beautiful, and I would love to take advantage of that and snooze early on Saturday night.

xnera, I'd be more than willing to pick you up at one of the bus stations. [Smile]

CT, I only need help with gas from the people in my car. You have your own gas to worry about! [No No]

Yes, the Millenium is downtown Minneapolis. If you do that, we really should go to Hell's Kitchen for brunch Sunday. I generally try to take visitors there anyway, because the food is fabulous.

I'm so excited to see y'all again/at all!

Hey, it's getting close! We should talk about what we're doing...

Besides henna, does anyone have anything in particular they'd like to do while in town? Here's kinda what dkw and I talked about:

Friday night dinner at Port of Beruit restaurant... local middle eastern restaurant with bellydancers Friday and Saturday nights. [Smile] The food in general is pretty good, but in particular they have a Mezza deal where if two or more people order it they bring out little dishes of all sorts of tasty appetizer type food, and then follow it with your choice of skewers. Oh, and the dancers are mostly teachers from where dkw, KrabbyPatty and I used to take lessons.

Saturday brunch in at our parent's house, and then retire to my place for henna in the late morning through early afternoon.

We thought bellydancers at dinner Friday would make it a bit of a theme weekend, but that's certainly open for debate. Other notes: if there is snow, my parents have a fabulous sledding hill and more different kinds of sled than you can shake a stick at. They also have an outdoor hot tub. And, of course, we'll have games around for Saturday evening, including Cranium, Fluxx, Apples to Apples, and Crononauts, at least. Depending on what dkw brings up. And if anyone's interested there is a rather large mall in town. [Wink]

So, whatcha think?

That sounds like fun! I've never been to the Mall, myself, so it might be fun to at least see it. But I won't be heartbroken if we don't go. [Smile]

I definitely can't go, by the way. Too busy. [Frown]

[Frown] You will be missed.

*bumpity*

One, more people need to comment on activities. [Big Grin]

Two, are the drivers finalized? I need to get out directions... Sara, Vana, and Ryuko, right? Anyone else? Ryuko, your directions will be extra-special detailed. [Razz]

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

[Razz] I dunno, if my friend is coming she might want to drive separately, since she's going to the formal dance that weekend and will probably want to leave early.

Otherwise it might be just me. I invited pseudo-hobbit, but it's her birthday weekend and she's spending it with her boyfriend.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

What time do you guys think this will be over?

Because now I'm thinking I ought to go to the dance...

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Well, Dana has to drive down to Iowa Saturday afterwards, so it can't go too long. [Smile] Are you going to come out to dinner with us Friday night, or just do the henna on Saturday?

(I bought the henna tonight!)

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

(sigh) I'd love to go out to dinner with you all, but my aunts are driving up from IL and I'm obligated to spend some time with them. (Not that I don't want to, and the enjoyment factor goes significantly up when I think of the fact that the one aunt has finally gotten divorced from her TERRIBLE HUSBAND. [Mad] ) So I don't know if I can. Probably not.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Sorry to hear that, Ryuko. Then if you're just coming Saturday, do you need directions to my place again, or do you remember how to get there?

Oh, btw, everyone, I3 will be joining us for dinner Friday. [Smile] Since there are other men coming to that part of the weekend, I figured we could open it up. Besides, he owes Bob a drink.

Ha ha, remembering... directions... HA HA HA...

You're a laugh riot, LJ. [Wink]

Okay, I was going to send directions out to everyone last night, but I got sidetracked. I promise I'll do it slightly after noon when I'm avoiding my monthly staff meeting. [Smile]

So . . . we're driving up to MN tonight. And we have to stop at the Harry & David's outlet in Medford to replace the jar of Hot&Smokey pepper relish that was the only thing that broke when Bob dropped the large bag of stuff that we also bought on our trip in December while we were at Harry & David's specifically to buy Hot&Smokey pepper relish.

And I think I'm only a few punches away from free truffles on my Harry & David's card.

So does anybody need anything? Moose Munch? Pears? Frozen Brie in Puff Pastry?

Where is the love?

We have made no food plans really... I did pick up some turkish delight and baklava for Saturday, to keep the theme going. Whatcha think?

Oh! And what about beverages? I have lemon ginger soda... think I'll need to go shopping tomorrow morning. (I took the whole day off work.)

I've given this a lot of thought, and I've decided that I really can't afford to take a day off work right now. I'm still learning my new position, and still trying to get caught up in everything that's overdue, and the thought of taking a day off to get even MORE behind just terrifies me.

Also, my mental state right now is very much like it was right before KamaCon -- I'm EXHAUSTED. And I didn't have much fun at KamaCon because I was so exhausted, and couldn't even focus on anything because of it. I spent large parts of that weekend either sleeping or staring blankly into space. So what I really need right now is to sleep.

So unforunately I won't be able to make it. [Frown] I'm really bummed, because I was looking forward to this and to seeing everyone again. [Frown] I wish we were a bit closer, distance-wise, because I would so come if I could just drop by for a few hours, or even come overnight. It's the two nights plus taking off of work I can't do.

BUT! Vána has my phone number, so you're all free to call me at sometime. I'll actually answer the phone this weekend. [Smile] I'll be out of the house on Saturday morning from about 9:30 to 1:00, but otherwise I'm free. Also, I have a henna kit at home, and I intend to do some henna on my own and post pictures.

Ooooh... [Frown]

I understand, xnera, but you'll be missed.

Does that leave Vana driving alone? Is this going to be a problem, Vana?

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

[Cry] Nooooo.... Why, X-ey, why??

Is it because you don't love me...?

Edit: Hmm... I forgot to post that I was joking.

I'll miss you X-ey, but I don't want you to get behind on work. [Frown] But I'll still miss you. [Frown]

xnera, I'll miss you. I'm glad you are taking good care of yourself, though -- that's cool. [Smile]

Vana, we might be able to squeeze 3 of us with our luggages into my one car. I -know- I couldn't do four and stay sane, but three might be feasible. Let's see what we can do once you get to Madison.

As noted on another thread, I'm going to be studying all weekend. But I'll still take frequent breaks. As for food, my guiltiest happy pleasure weekend diet is GrapeNuts and cranberry juice. Not together, just dry GrapeNuts. But I'll be bringing that with me. For meals, I have no dietary restrictions, but I'm in the post-cravings stage of my cycle, so I just won't be terribly hungry.

We have to do something special for Karen this weekend. Let's work it out offsite. [Smile]

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to make my regrets as well. Sophie's been sick all week and I keep thinking that tomorrow she'll feel better, and surely by the weekend she'll feel better, but she's got a fever again today and was expectorating large very slimy dallops of phlegm according to the daycare today.

Okay, sorry, too much information.

Anyway, I'm really having a crisis of conscious on this one. I really really want to go this weekend and my mom is willing to take Sophie, but I just don't feel right. Especially since she was refusing the bottle today, too. [Frown]

I'm going to whine and ponder a bit more before I make a final decision, but its looking like regrets right now.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Awwwww. Poor Sophie. Poor Mama. [Frown]

You have to make the best decision for you and yours, Christy. There will be other times. And Julie and I could make something special for you and Karen, both. [Smile] I hope it works out well, whatever the choice.

Posted by Christy (Member # 4397) on :

But its so HARD to have to make the best decision for me and mine!!

*whine*

We're off to be sure that Sophie's lungs really are still clear and I'm going to try to clear my head and give it some thought. Still, I'm bummed.

There is nobody in a better position to know than you, sweetie. We could also wait until a little later in the day tomorrow before we leave. That might help you decide.

Sometimes recharging your batteries is huge. Sometimes other things are more huge. [Dont Know]

*fingers crossed for inspiration for you

I'm fine with leaving later in the day, as well, if it helps, Christy! [Smile]

Poor Sophie.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

[Frown] Poor baby.

I hope she gets better quick, and not just because I'd of course like it if you can come.

I'm not really fond of the whole sick baby thing, myself.

I am horrified that I still haven't sent directions. I am sending them NOW to CT, because it sounds like she is the crux of the driving. Ryuko, ones to my house will be going to you immediately following.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Okay, e-mails sent to both of you, to the addresses in your profiles. Please let me know if you need any clarifications. [Smile]

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Apparantly you should have sent us directions as well. [Embarrassed] But we're here now.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

How on earth did you get lost?

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Julie/Vana, give me a call -- we should delay this by an hour (have to take my cat to the vet for eye issues [Frown] ). Haven't talked to Christy yet this morning. I'll send my phone # to you by email, but if you don't get it, just heads-up me here. [Smile]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Hey one last note, all --I don't know if you were planning on bringing sleeping bags or anything, but no need. With just two or three coming, there is bed space for all. With the possible exception of me, but I'm perfectly happy on the couch. [Smile] Bring your own pillow, of course, if it helps you sleep. Otherwise we're good.

G'morning, ElJay. [Smile]

Hi there. [Wave]

My test patch of henna came out way too light. [Frown] I was suspicious of this brand anyway, so I'm gonna go ethnic grocercy hopping this morning. Hope your kitty's alright.

I think he has hemophilus influenzae (if cats get that) -- just a little infection making his eye puffy. We'll probably end up with antibiotic drops.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Okay, we're leaving! (Long story ... [Wink] ) It's me and Vana against the world. Thelma and Louise.

Take-off is at 2pm CST. I'll keep the directions in hand. ElJay, I'm emailing you our cell phone #s.

Got 'em! See ya soon!

The pre-henna party party has returned from eating way too much Lebanese food and watching/participating in belly dancing.

Late night henna supply store came through for them as well.
