I don't quite understand how this works. Do they quite literally make up their news, knowing that they are lying? Who would work for a newspaper like that? (It's one thing to write fiction, after all, but to present it as truth?) But on the other hand, the hypothesis that they actually believe that Elvis is alive and has had children with space aliens seems even weirder.

Read an article once that interviewed a former Star writer. His technique was to write a brief article for the back pages about alien abduction or wolf boys. Within a week he'd get mail from people who had the exact same thing happen to them and admired him for being bold enough to tell the truth. Bingo, he had his sources. He'd contact them and use their quotes to write a much bigger story for the front page.

Ah, that's clever. But still - the writer knew he was making it up, right?
