And there’s a lot going on in Ames that weekend. And we’re inviting over 300 people, almost all of them from out of town. Which means I’m blocking rooms at several hotels, which is nice, since it gives guests a range to choose from.
However. If people are serious about having a Hatrack Con that weekend, (and want to all be at the same hotel) I will need to choose one of the hotels and get a block of rooms that we don’t put in the information sent out with the invitations. Otherwise you might end up spilt up all over town.
So how many people think they might be coming? It’s the weekend of April 1-3. The wedding is Saturday, April 2, which is 174 days away, not that anyone’s counting. (That’s 4,176 hours, or 250,560 minutes, or 15,033,600 seconds.)
And, before you ask, yes, you are invited. Yes, I meant you.

Is there any airport besides Des Moines I should be looking at?
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
It is the unfortunate truth that flying into Minneapolis/St. Paul, renting a car, and driving to Ames may be cheaper than flying into Des Moines.

Yes, Travelocity is clearly the place to look. I can fly into St. Paul non-stop for $20 less than to Des Moines . . . or one-stop for $50 less.

It's about a 4 hour drive each way from St Paul to Ames, so it's probably not worth saving 20 bucks over. Unless a lot of people were going to coordinate their flight times and rent a vehicle together.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
*dryly* But flying non-stop to the Twin Cities instead of one-stop to Des Moines saves close to 4 hours.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
Ah. That does make a difference. So you can choose if you want to spend your 4 hours sitting in a car or an airport.

It's really only 3 1/2 hours from the Twin Cities airport to Ames. And it's about 1 hour from the Des Moines Airport. So figure that flying into MSP is going to add 2 1/2 hours, plus car rental and milage.

Not really. You could take it to Davenport and try to talk someone from Chicago into picking you up on the way through. I'm pretty sure AJ is coming. Or you could take it all the way to St. Paul and hitch a ride with someone who's flying into that aiport. But that would mean going 200 miles too far north and driving back, which seems kind of silly.

ElJay has already volunteered to organize shuttle runs from the Des Moines airport if needed.
Rivka, they aren’t. But we’ll figure it out. What I had originally planned, before people started talking about having a whole weekend gathering, was to have you stay at a house right next to the church, which is where both the ceremony and the reception were going to be.
But . . . the University Memorial Union has a hotel, and it’s only a few blocks away. I hadn’t thought of it right away, but it might be the best. It’s got a rec center with bowling and pool and such, and a food court which includes . . .Chick-fil-A! (Okay, now I know AJ’s coming.)

Okay, I have blocked rooms at the Memorial Union. They are not huge rooms, but they are within easy walking distance of the wedding, and being on campus has a lot of advantages in terms of activities.
There are 7 suites, which are $72/ night for one or two people and $5 per night for each additional person. One of them is a smoking room, though. There are also 8 regular rooms, which have one double bed for $62/night. Rollaway beds available for $7. We can add more of this kind of room if we need to.
Rooms are held until 2 weeks before the event, at which time anything not reserved with a credit card is released.
To make reservations, call (515) 292-1111. The block is under my name – Dana Williams.

ElJay! I love the V-Stars!!!
If you want, I'll help you find one that's a better buy although, how much that one goes for could be interesting to watch -- I suspect it will not meet the minimum reserve price.
Issues to consider: 1) 8000 miles on motorcycle tires is not trivial, even though the rear did look good there..
2) A 2000 Yamaha is almost out of warranty. You can get a nice 1-2 year old one for less than 1/2 price of a new one and still have significant time left for warranty. Actually, now that I think of it, I don't know if the V-STAR comes with the same warranty as the rest of the "STAR" line. I'd have to check.
3) My experience with MOST Yamaha dealers has been very positive. I would definitely consider buying a used bike from a dealer, especially if they were local and knew the history of the bike (i.e., they'd sold & serviced it).
As for how we're getting to the wedding. Look skyward at 3:37 pm...
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
Thanks Bob... I've been watching the papers and several on-line sites besides e-bay, and the 1 - 2 year old ones seem to be going for way more than half price of a new one... Mostly $1000 or less off, which just doesn't make sense to me.
That one does seem to have a LOT of miles on it, for its age. I figure there's more riding time in Texas, but still!
I've already checked my local dealer, and they don't have any, but I'm sure there are several more in the city. regardless, I'm not in any hurry. I was planning on buying in the spring, anyway. But that one is so low, I can't help but watch... and wonder what the reserve is.
Oh, and what kind of bike do you have? Dana didn't know when I asked her. she just said it was a lot bigger than the one I want. (I pointed one out to her passing us on the freeway.)
Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :
Hmm...If that's the case on pricing, maybe you can save up for a new one??? I bet you could finance it with a good down payment and not be too shocked at the payments. I wonder if maybe the prices don't drop much until the warranty is almost over??? I'll have to ask around. That seems oddly too high to me as well.
I really, really like it!
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
Excuse me? I did too know! Sort of.
I was 90% sure it was a Yamaha, anyway.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
That's beautiful, Bob.
The money isn't really what's keeping me from getting a new one. I just don't think I want a brand new bike when I'm just starting riding.
Plus, I currently have no interest bearing debt except for my mortgage. I don't think I want to change that for a motorcycle. I'll be paying cash or not at all.
Edit: *snort* Yeah, Dana, you know how many different types of motorcycles Yamaha makes? That was less than helpful.

Almost -- sundown Friday to full dark Saturday.

rivka...what's the definition of "full dark?" Is there a time estimate you can place on it for April in that general latitude?
ElJay... I think you are wise to get an older bike (but not too old) for your first one. And paying cash is a good way to avoid the "going in debt for non-essentials" morass.
I really can't see spending more than $2500 for a used V-Star when new ones are so inexpensive. My value sensors must be out of whack or something.

Thanks to the wonder of Hebcal, I can now tell you that the candle-lighting time (actually about 20 minutes before sunset, as you can see) is at 6:21 on April 1st; while Shabbos is over for me at 7:35 on the 2nd.
However. PLEASE do not schedule around me! I cannot commit to coming (although I am trying hard to manage it), and would feel AWFUL if things were scheduled around me and I were unable to make it! (Actually, I'd be rather uncomfortable with that even assuming I do make it.)
On a similar note, while I think it is incredibly sweet (pun intended ) that you are trying to arrange for the chocolate fountain to be kosher, I can tell you that the effort that would be involved (getting kosher chocolate is probably not so hard; kashering a fountain? probably very hard, and I can just picture Rabbi Adlerstein's face when I asked him that one . . .) is just not worth it. And I love plain strawberries (which, like any (whole -- although most cut ones are fine too, thanks to Department of Health regs) raw fruit or vegetable, is absolutely fine)!
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
Okay, we'll leave the fountain as is.
The reception situation is this -- in order to fit more people, we had to move it. It's now three miles from the ceremony site, and nowhere near any hotels. However, dinner will be from 6-7 or so, with dancing starting around 7:15 and lasting about 3 hours.

Usually vouchers can be used to purchase travel for after their expiration date, they just have to be used up themselves before the expiration date.

Well, I was hoping to find a way to come, but we may have a conflict that month.
If I did manage to come, my travel restrictions on the day of the event would be the same as rivka's (however, I have no qualms about walking 3 miles ).

Put me down for a strong maybe. I am going to get my schedule for next semester settled by the end of next week or so, and then I should be able to figure out whether I can come.

Got the contracts from the hotels today. I am annoyed. The band and the reception venue both managed to send two copies so that I could return one and keep one – none of the hotels did. Also one of them changed my name to “Diana,” two of them spelled “Radcliffe” wrong, and one I had to cross out “Williams” and write in “Williams-Scopatz” so Bob’s family wouldn’t feel left out. And only one of them included an addressed envelope for me to return the contract.
Tonight I get to call and cancel the caterer we’d booked, since the place we moved the reception to has in-house catering. I’m going to hate making this call – I’m such a softie.

Hmm... I have been hoping that when the time comes next year, I can borrow my sister's RV, so I don't have to use a hotel at all. But it is too early to know that yet (whether or not it conflicts with any of her uses). So we need to know this far in advance??

Farmgirl, you don't have to decide now, I was just trying to get a vague idea of how many rooms to block. They'll hold the rooms until March 15.
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
Ivygirl pointed out that at the current rate of gas prices, the RV may cost as much to DRIVE there as it would take to book a hotel room.
So, in other words, there is a possibility either way, and I hope to let you know before the Henna party, at least.
Either way, we will be there.

Absolutely. And NOTHING is stopping me from coming this time!
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
Yes -- this time I went back through and read ALL the posts..... this is exciting that so many people are coming!
I'm sure between Boon, punwit and I, we will probably had a mid-west car-pool. Or at least car-convoy if there are too many of us for one vehicle.
Plaid -- how far out in Missouri do you live? Do you want us to pick you up at a train station along the way, or meet you somewhere?
We're thinking residing in the hotel with the other Hatrackers will be more fun that trying to find a place for the RV. However, now my boys are also contemplating going (not to the wedding, so much, but just to meet Hatrackers) because I think they are feeling left-out because Ivygirl and I talk about Hatrack people so much.
Anyway, I have those dates blocked on my 2005 calendar, reserved for vacation at work, and it would have to be something really important to make me miss this wedding! So plan on us -- at least Ivygirl and I will attend the celebration, for sure.

Okay, it looks like I will be arriving at the Des Moines airport at 11 pm. Is there anyone else arriving then, or are the people shuttling between Des Moines and Ames still going to be at it that late?
I plan to fly out around 2 pm on Sunday, which means I'll probably need to be at the airport around noon. How does that work?

Ok, I know some people have tickets. I'm trying to figure out mine.
Anyone else currently contemplating flying into the Twin Cities on Friday morning? Or want to? Or will be driving through about then? I'd like to share a ride (or rental car) with someone, if at all possible.
Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :
rivka, I'd be interested in sharing a rental. You'll have to drive, but i'll share the cost. I wonder if it would be cheaper to fly into the twin cities. I'll have to check it out.
In short, or maybe not so short, I'd be willing to share the cost of a rental car.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
Cool. I'm still comparing flights into MSP and DSM -- the options seem to have changed from when I checked a few weeks ago.
But I will keep that in mind!
Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :
Yeah, I just checked travelocity and the cheapest I found from Phoenix to Minneapolis was $275. That was arriving on Friday and returning on Sunday. Would we be leaving on Sunday? It would be a nice thing to know if we're sharing transportation back to Mnneapolis or Des Moines.
By the way, where's the best place online to get airline tickets?
Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :
Des Moines from Phoenix was $284 on travelocity.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
I use travelocity, orbitz, and expedia to get an idea of the best price. Then I go to the site of the airline with the best ticket, and buy through them.
Right now I'm looking at flying into the Twin Cities early Friday morning, and flying out either Sunday afternoon or Monday afternoon (mostly because the flights are all early afternoon, and that would mean leaving Iowa pretty early Sunday).
My main concern is not price (that's secondary), but the lack of flights leaving after 8 pm Thursday but arriving in Des Moines earlier than about 2 pm.
Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :
Well, I need all the help I can get as I've never bought tickets online before. Will they mail them to me?
I realize you can buy a paperless ticket, but I want a ticket in my hand that I can present to the boarding agent.
You also have to remember that I've only flown twice and both times The LDS church bought my ticket. The first time was from Utah to Indianapolis and the second was two years later from Indy to Phoenix.
edited for spelling

Some airlines/sites will mail paper tickets (although there is an extra fee involved); some don't even have the option. But I would (and presumably will) get an e-ticket, and print out a copy of the confirmation. That way, you have something to hand to the check-in agent.
Also, having discussed it with my mom, I think I'm going to opt for the one-stop that goes to Des Moines, rather than try to drive four hours on unfamiliar, potentially rainy or snowy roads.
I will probably hold off on buying my ticket another week or two though. Doesn't look like ticket prices are likely to change significantly before then.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
While I can certainly understand trying to get to the closer airport, I will tell you it's pretty easy to get onto 35 from the airport, and then you just take 35 straight to Ames. (From Minneapolis.) So yeah, it's 4 hours, but it's a 4 hour straight shot, so if the Des Moines tickets aren't working out well for you don't stress too much about getting lost.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
Well, it's the same flight into MSP either way (leaving 12:35 am, and getting into Minneapolis/St. Paul at sometime after 6 am). The question is whether I then change flights to get into DSM at 8-something, or rent a car (or hop a ride, or what have you) and go to Iowa that way.
Looks like the costs are likely to come out fairly similar (price difference on the tickets is about $80), so the real question is which way is least likely to a) make me nuts, and b) get me stranded somewhere because something fell through and I can't get to Ames sufficiently before Shabbos.
(Yes, I'm being a tad paranoid. But ask me about my flight that was supposed to arrive in Chicago at 6:30 am on another Friday. Go ahead, I dare ya. )

I guess we should get busy and book a room. I just widely fluctuate between going and not-going depending on how angry I am with Hatrack discussions from one day to the next
But it will probably be just Ivygirl and me. And although there may be a chance we can team up with punwit on driving -- well, to tell the truth, I'm just a bit of a control freak on driving -- I like to drive. I don't like to ride as passenger. So that arrangement remains to be seen.

Friday night will be the difficult time for shuttles, as I will have to be at the wedding rehersal and rehersal dinner. So instead of actually doing those runs myself, I was hoping to organize willing volunteers.
Des Moines to Ames is a totally different town, not just a different part of a metro area. So I doubt there will be shuttles running.
However, if you're talking about getting in that late, it would be after the rehersal dinner, and I am perfectly willing and able to get out there for a last shuttle run of the day.
(Edit: As far as planning to be at the airport at any particular time, so far no one has posted any arrival times. Since it's so far they will have to be clumped up somewhat, but we'll see how it turns out. I think I'll start a new thread. This one is getting pretty long.)

So, I mention to my husband today that Ames isn't really any farther to Ames than it is to St. Louis. And if our car could make it to St. Louis then it should make it to Ames. To which he asks if I'm actually thinking of going somewhere.
I say that I am actually contemplating such a trip to which he says as long as there's a TV, he'll be there.
What I don't realize at this point in the conversation is that your wedding is on the same day as the Final Four. What in the world we you people thinking?
But that's okay. I wouldn't want him to come to the wedding anyway. The rooms have TVs, right? Unless I can get Caleb to come with me and share a room. . .
However, if KU makes it to the Final Four, I don't know if I'd come.

Found round trip American Airlines to Des Moines for $346....that's with tax.
$326 on Hotwire...that's the lowest I've found and it's in the departure times that I want....
*calculates in head*
let's say rivka/shigosei/me share a room. Two beds in a $72 suite plus $7 roll-away bed: $52 for two nights per person.
Rental car prices? Have no idea. $35 per day? $105 for 3 days divided by Shigosei and me (and anyone else that might want to share) $55 or so per person.
$110 plus $326 airline ticket = $450 plus food an extras.
Geez, that's less than MOST of the airline tickets I'm finding!!
(I found a car rental for $19 on hotwire, so it would be even cheaper. )
I don't mind sleeping on a rollaway bed, I'd be arriving at around the same time you would Shigosei, so we could definitely split car. I'd be departing in the afternoon/early evening on Sunday (I have school on Monday.)
Ok. So maybe I can go. rivka/allegra/shigosei, what do you think about room sharing (if you want to) and my price break down? Does it sound accurate? Shigosei and I would only be spending two nights there and it sounds like you'll be there a little longer rivka...I'm sure we can work it out. *is excited*

Um... by a quick read of the thread, the only people who have confirmed which hotel they're staying at are Tom & Christy (and Sophie, I would assume). Have any others finalized location? We wanna stay where most everyone else will be, assuming it's feasible. And once we make our hotel reservations, I'll feel more like our attendance is a done deal rather than a likelihood.
It's pretty close to definite that (assuming we go, and yes, Mama already got the time off work) we'll be staying in Minn., renting an SUV or minivan, driving down Saturday morning, and driving back Sunday afternoon. If that squares with anyone else's travel plans, we can probably give someone a ride. Maybe two someones if things work out. I can't make any guarantees at this point, unfortunately.

"Is there a specific reason you were mentioning St. Louis Tom? Do you think I could find connections up to Des Moines and have them be cheaper?"
That was my thought. It's a different set of airlines down there, and the prices may vary.

So, Dana, are you keeping the Hatrack people secret from the family, or the family secret from Hatrack?

I need to make a reservation for a suite before I change my mind. . .
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
Okay - I'm going to call this Memorial Union place if that block of rooms isn't already all taken up.. does anyone know if it they are any still available? On page 2 dkw said she had only blocked 7 rooms, and it looks like there are already many more than that coming.
Is everyone else blocking for Friday AND Saturday nights?
Farmgirl
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
No, no, no, 7 suites and 8 regular rooms. Or maybe the other way around. And we can add more regular rooms to the block as it fills up, as long as there are any available.
And the people aren't secret, just the location.
Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :
Just Saturday here. We're leaving early Saturday morning and coming back whenever on Sunday, depending on what's happening and how much xanax I have left.

I thought I had done this. Perhaps in the other thread. Cor and I are definitely coming, and we have reserved our room at the union.
What's this about a secret Hatrack hotel? Is it nicer than the other hotels, or less nice?
EDIT: It wasn't that hard to find the answer to my own question instead of waiting for someone else to do it for me . . .

Ok, I'll be more direct this time. Does anyone know (*hints heavily* or perhaps a local could find out?) what the difference is between a room and a suite? Other than about $10?
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
Don't know. Will find out.
Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :
Suites have two double beds and are larger rooms. Regular rooms have either one double or queen or two twin beds.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
Danke!
Ok, Shigosei and . . . um, was Narnia the other person? But she's not coming, right?
*collects thoughts* Shig, how do feel about getting a suite? For the (shared cost) of $10, that would be my preference.
And kat, there'd be room for a roll-away for you, if ya want it.
I think I will be reserving a room and buying a plane ticket next week, after I get my next paycheck. We want Friday and Saturday night -- what about Sunday night? I haven't totally decided if I'm leaving Sunday evening or Monday sometime . . . it kinda depends on when everyone else is taking off.

I'm coming, but can't decide whether to drive or fly. Therefore, I don't know how many nights to reserve the room for. I'll prolly need a roomie at any rate.

Don't count this as an RSVP. Not until I've booked the room. (But I AM coming.)
Posted by Valentine014 (Member # 5981) on :
rivka-
According to the woman I booked our room with, she says there is little difference between the suite and the guest room. The suite is "longer" but not that much bigger. She said she liked the guest rooms much better, so we booked one of those.
Also, I think I'm going to call back and book Friday too.

Dana -- browsing through this thread, brings up several questions. Can you possibly start a new thread with a overview of the schedule, so we have an idea of where we need to be when, and what all we are invited to?
I mean - I realize you can't cram everyone into everything - so some events will be just for the major wedding party (like maybe the dinner?) or what? and the dance is open to all?
I just like to get kinda mapped out before the big day to know where I need to be and help others get there too.
