Can anyone think of songs that might touch on themes like gossiping, religious intolerance/hypocrisy, standing up for "what's right."

It's to help someone I know with background music for something about To Kill a Mockingbird. Not exactly doing their homework for them -- it's background music FOR their homework...

So, any themes you can pick from that book might be helpful, but those are the stumpers right now.

I was thinking of some John McCutcheon songs, but they're not quite in the same vein. They might work, but I'm looking for more to choose from.

Thanks!

Here's one, which can drive home what would have happened had Jem not shown up at the jail that night: strange fruit by Billie Holiday.

Yea, but can it drive home after a few drinks?

I would think The Hurricane by Bob Dylan would be good.

I was going to say "Hurricane" as well, but it is very long.

Nancy Griffith's "It's a Hard Life" would fit, but not necessarily for the time period of the story.

I can think of a bunch, but none are available online. Does he need recordings, lyrics, or what?

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

probably recordings eventually. If lyrics are available, I can forward those and cut down the amount of recording, though.

The Loneliness of Happiness (Scroll down to #10)
We’re Creating Monsters, #15, same link
Xian Bookstore, #25

Closed Out . . . #17

I have both of these CDs.

Phil Carver has an entire album most of which would work, but I don't have that one. mjk & pjk do, though, so I can get the lyrics from them.

"Laramie," by Amy Ray.

You can find the lyrics here:

http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/amy/amy.html

Just scroll down a bit. The guitar chords you hear there are from the intro to the song.

One I can think of right off:

Arron Tippins You've Got to Stand For Something

Some others are hiding in the back of my head. I'll go looking for them when I get a chance.

Bob, I also suggest Bob Dylan's "Mississippi. Lyrics here:
http://lyrics.rare-lyrics.com/B/Bob-Dylan/Mississippi.html

I know the story is set in Alabama, but i still think it fits. Surprisingly, Donna the Buffalo sings this song, and i think you might have it on one of the cds. It is more than the lyrics, the tune brings something up in me that "To Kill a Mockingbird" does.

Also, I think the friend should consider both some old time music and some traditional African American sprituals of the time period. (What was the time period, exactly, I forget)

It was during the Depression, I think after FDR was in office.

It may be a stretch but what about Southern Man by Neil Young.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

That would be a good one.

But what IS the project?

I was listening to Wide Mouth Mason the other day and remembered this thread, as they have song called "Tom Robinson." It's not so much about the themes you mentioned, but it is definitely about To Kill a Mockingbird. I don't know whether it's available online though.

Lyrics here.

Yeah, Bob sort of dropped this thread. That offends me. (oops , wrong thread for that)

By the way, I have not seen "To Kill a Mockingbird" on tv for years. What was on the other night, after I was thinking about this thread and got my book out to reread? That is right..."To Kill a Mockingbird." I started to get all teary from the first scene. I think Scout might be my favorite character in literature. (today, anyway)

Scout is a great character and the movie portrayal was great!

[Big Grin]

Thanks everyone for all the help. My own suggestions were rejected for foul language -- ah well. But from what I hear, many of yours were not just acceptable but downright perfect!!!

Thanks!

Southern Man was already on the bill. Go figure.

You didn't tell us foul language was a no-no!

Bob, your package is still on the front seat of the van, but it is addressed!! Progress!!

*ahem*

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Dag, your cds are still on my desk, but do have a nametag on them.
Oh, hell. On second look, i see that my husband put them all in a big pile again.
OK, next week, darn it all, next week is the week!

Personally, I've always thought the movie soundtrack is one of the greatest ever.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Book,
I was noticing the soundtrack the other night more than anything else, thanks to BOB, and I agre with you.
I wish Mr. Scopatz would at least tell us what the project is like? I really like the idea of putting music to reading, and might try it with my fifth graders, so give up the goods!
