I got tired of my current CDs, and I'm poor, so I found another source of music during the day.

Yahoo LAUNCH videos

I almost never listen to the radio apart from NPR, so most of the things I'm listening to are new to me. I've learned some things.

1. I really hate Jessica Simpson's music.
2. I don't like Pink.
3. I don't like Red Hot Chili Peppers.
4. The A-Ha video Take On Me is still wonderful.
5. I like Evanescence.
6. I like Eminem, but feel guilty about it.
7. The punk bands headed by guys remind me of my baby brother. I miss my baby brother.

AND...

8. I've loved every song of Avril Lavigne's that I've heard.

Eminem is a rap genius. There's nothing to feel guilty about. [Wink]

Eminem is interesting.
Celine Dion only has 2 really good songs. But they play the ones that are not good by her anyway. Her voice makes my teeth literally hurt when she screeches at the highest possible register.
Most falsettos annoy me, there are a few acceptions like Jeff Buckley and Kyo.
Most pop music annoys the hell out of me.
I like this song by No Doubt called "Running." It's so cute!
Dmitri Hvorostovsky seems to be getting handsomer because his voice is just so good like some decadent hyper chocolate confection that makes you gain weight just by looking at it.
Musical talent makes people sexier.
If I owned Leperello's Revenge I'd watch it 60 times in a row probably.
I hate when opera that isn't in English is translated into English.
I can like a song from every genre by any band or musician.
I like some country songs.

Kat, just out of curiosity, what do you not like about Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

Oh, and as for confessions... I don't know if these are particularly new confessions for Hatrack, but:

I know every word to "Goodby Earl" by the Dixie Chicks.

I love Eminem, and I don't feel guilty at all about it.

I like "Pure Morning" by Placebo.

Jewel is among my favorite singers, ever. My favorite song of hers is "Daddy".

I think Weird Al has a somewhat soothing voice.

While I love REM's lyrics, I find their music and voices to be annoying.

9. What on EARTH is Gwen Stefani doing? Just, No.
10. Good Charlotte. I like that. [Smile]
11. Graduation: Friends Forever. It was good and tear-inducing the first time. The second, played again because I said I liked it, I wanted to throw the computer. So, no more.
12. Britney Spears redid My Perogative? That girl makes me sad.

I'm not analyzing my responses - I don't know I didn't like RHCP, except that it annoyed me.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Oh. Oh Kat. Avril Lavigne? Why? WHY?

Although I agree on Graduation and Gwen Stefani. I think I'll send a why her way...

Okay. [Smile]

And I, too, hate that Gwen Stefani song. In fact, nobody I ask likes the song. It makes me wonder why it's doing so well. It also makes me wonder why she chose to go down the path she did. I really liked the songs she did with Moby and Eve (and so did most of my friends), and I had hoped she would have done something similar to those if she decided to go solo. I expected it to be a departure from No Doubt, but I wanted to listen to something that wouldn't make my ears bleed.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Yeah, I like Graduation about once every other year. That's all I can stand of it, but it's a decent song then.

I assume you folks are talking about "What You Waiting For?" and not "Running." I think the latter is a cute, semi-retro little ballad, whereas the former is just ugly.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Avril's got a good voice, now that she's been trained in how to use it (i.e., she took singing lessons and now isn't singing flat all the time when she plays live). Also, she sounds really good with just an acoustic guitar, closer to her folky roots.

I will forgive you for not loving the Peppers... but... Blood Sugar Sex Magik! I mean...

Hit me, you can't hurt me
Suck my kiss
Kiss me please, pervert me
Stick with this!
Is she talking dirty?
Give to me sweet sacred bliss, your mouth was made to suck my kiss

I love Suck My Kiss. And a bunch of other Peppers songs. [Big Grin]

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Yeah, I don't often listen to either of the two Peppers albums I own all the way through. Mostly I stick to my favourite songs.

I also own the Evanescence album, and enjoy it.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

I like some of their songs, but not all. Most of the ones I've heard though..

And I can stand "Running" I just hate the direction Stefani's music has gone lately. It's just irritating.

Also, my beef is not with Avril's voice, I must grudgingly admit that it's quite awesome... But I hate all of the lyrics that she's written... And the fact that she became a pop star without having finished college and certainty acts the part.

Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :

1. While i can see how some complete Chili Peppers albums can be hard to listen all the way through, BSSM is NOT one of them. What a great album that is. I'm kind of annoyed that mine has gone missing in the last few months.
2. Avril Lavigne's songs are most definitely catchy. And I even hear some interesting lyrics from her once in a while. But for the most part, from really listening to her lyrics, I think she's an incredibely selfish and egocentric person and it annoys me how all the little girls want to be like her. Girl power is great and all, but does that girl realize there's two sides to every coin and they're not both her?
3. Eminem is incredibely talented.

Posted by porcelain girl (Member # 1080) on :

uhm, i think gwen stefani's new stuff is hilarious. in a good way. i love that she is so sexy and talented but still so self deprecating. a lot of young pop stars could learn from her, avril included. she's always had a bit of irony in her songs, and while i may not see her new stuff as genius, i still enjoy it. i dig the crazy alice in wonderland stuff, and i simply adore the fact that she put "take a chance you stupid ho" in her single.
brilliant.

Posted by porcelain girl (Member # 1080) on :

i like avril's voice, her songs are catchy, and she's a lovely girl, but yes most of her songs are so juvenile and you can tell she desperately wants to be seen as otherwise. when i saw her video for "nobody's home" i was touched because i hadn't thought about the lyrics in that context, and yet it would have been a GOOD video if she had an unknown play the part of the homeless girl. everyone knows avril is a rich snot now, why on earth would i feel sorry for her? i did like the style she donned for the monochromatic bits with her singing, that was a good idea.
okay, i think that's the end of my crtiquing pop culture for now.
and poor spelling.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Avril is boring. Only her name is interesting.
I have dorky taste in music. I tend to like dippy old songs.

That's what's been bugging me about her! I could never put my finger on it...

My favorite bands at the moment?
Guster
Bowling for Soup
Jump (Jump Little Children)
They Might Be Giants (they crack me up)
and...oh geez..I think I could go on and on...though I must give credit to my boyfriend for introducing me to good music [Big Grin]

I LOVE Gwen Stefani's new song. But that's not surprising considering No Doubt has been my favorite band for about 9 years now. Some of the things she wears and does make me cringe a little, but she's Gwen. She has an incredibly unique style, and it seems to be working.

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

See, I sort of like No Doubt, too. At least, I liked (loved, even) Tragic Kingdom. And I don't particularly dislike the lyrics in her solo stuff. But, golly, what terrible music it is!

about 10 years ago(man, i can't believe this actually happened 10 years ago!), I saw No Doubt live, and they put on a really good show. At one point they played a really cool rendition of The Imperial March.

1. Running sounds like someone grabbed a Nintendo (original NES) game and put some lyrics to it. I think that's what makes it cool [Smile] (Go old school!)
2. I have NEVER liked Britney Spears
3. Every boy band on earth deserves to die (Okay, so I liked N-Sync's Bye-Bye-Bye, but I was on a mission when it came out and hadn't heard any real music for about a year)
4. I'm not much of a fan of Avril for some reason.
5. Jessica Simpson is hot, and though I can't stand her music, I can actually stand to look at her (Unlike Britney Spears, who is a <insert insulting bad word here>)
6. Real Big Fish are awesome
7. Weezer is, too.
8. As is Cowboy Mouth, Crash Test Dummies, and Ben Folds Five
9. Michael MacLean is the cheeziest Mormon song writer on earth (I include Saturday's Warrior in that, since I like Lex De Azevedo's work some) (Side note, just thought I'd throw this in here to exclude people <JK>)

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

13. I heard Britney Spears' Everytime. I kind of liked it. What's happening here?
14. 1985. Great song. Take On Me is from 1985. I refuse to admit correlation.
15. Aw, I just love Aimee Mann. [Smile]

Strider, I know just what you mean with Avril's selfish point-of-view in her songs. On the other hand, I adored Scarlett O'Hara for years before I figured out what a wench she is, so it's not a surprise that I don't mind it.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I put all my music on one playlist and am listening to most of it. Right now, I'm taking a timeout from dancing to type. To what am I dancing?

Ricky Martin. "She Bangs."

It's just... catchy. Or something.

1. I find "Mambo No. 5" a really catchy song. So bad when I listen to the lyrics, so fun when I don't.
2. Bagpipe music is hawt.
3. I... I find I'm beginning to enjoy Avril music. Not sure why, but there we are.
4. Gordon Lightfoot has a sexy voice. I just try not to think about how much older than me he is.

Do NOT buy the album it's on, though. Every song on it is a re-hash of Mambo No. 5 (Oddly enough, having heard a great deal of mambo music, you would be amazed how many of them sound EXACTLY ALIKE!!!)

As for Gordon Lightfoot, the man is...the man.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

No worries. I don't like it enough to buy it. I just borrow my dad's copy. Or someone's. I'm cheap.

5. Great Big Sea essential. There's such variety in their music, and it's all so FUN, and well-played, and yeah. Essential. Everyone likes Great Big Sea. Not a confession here, but a proseletyzing.

Kat, what RHCP songs have you heard? Not trying to jump on you or anything for your taste in music or anything, but you should really try to listen to them some more. They have some AMAZING songs. [Smile]

I like Bob Dylan's voice.

-I blame the hippies for starting the trends that would snowball over the decades and lead to the downfall of ordinary American morality . . . but I still think they made the best music of the entire twentieth century.

-Michael Stipe should not sing. Ever. Not even alone in the shower.

-I don't completely hate Avril Lavigne. She irritates me, but I do think she has the potential to be better than she is, if she can manage to grow up a little. I actually liked the song "Complicated", and it makes me want to scream at her, "Follow your own damned advice!"

-I think Bob Dylan is highly overrated.

-I think "Baby Got Back" is funny.

-Eminem is a master poet. But I still won't pay money to support his career.

-Frank Sinatra was never a good singer. But Tony Bennett is.

-I don't really like bass very much.

I like the Beatles.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Frank Sinatra's voice was sort of... Boring... I like Nat King Cole better or Ella
I really like H.I.M. a lot and they do a good show. Some lucky people got to touch Ville Valo!
Bob Dylan sounded great when he was young, but now he thinks he can just moan and people will still buy his CDs

19. *hides face in hands* Toxic is a really catchy song.
20. Wow, you say you like ONE Josh Groban song...okay, I still like it. I like Andrea Bocelli too, even though my baby brother said it was Barbara Streisand in Italian.

The only RHCP song that I heard was Californication. Maybe something else by them will come on.

Posted by MyrddinFyre (Member # 2576) on :

Um, thats the only song by them that I DON'T like. RHCP are amazing, otherwise.

And Toxic *rocks*.

Avril, hmm. I feel like I should like her, cause of all she stands for. But for me, I can hardly tell her from Ashlee Simpson, Fefe Dobson, and Skye Sweetnam. NOT a compliment by any means.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

1. Gordon Lightfoot rocks hard.
2. No one has made the obvious Peppers statement, unless I missed it. They used to rock, and now they suck. Simple enough. Their version of "Love Rollercoaster" is one of my favorites.
3. I can't get through a day without listening to Shakira. My daughter stepped on and broke my CD, and after trying in vain to go without it for a while, I downloaded it with BitTorrent. It's the first illegal music download I've made in years. I thought I had grown beyond it. >_< I have got to get some of that woman's older music, from when she was a brunette.
4. I own more of Dan Fogelberg's CD's than anyone elses, unless you count my old Monkees music that I rarely listen to anymore.
5. I really like funk, which surprises the heck out of me. Ever heard Maxwell's version of "Closer"? "I wanna loooove you like an animal..." I would appreciate some suggestions for some music to check out in this area.

I find that country music tunes espousing adultery, alcoholism, and vigilanteism are MUCH more catchy that pop/rock/rap songs on similar themes.

I mean, 'What Happens in Mexico, Stays in Mexico' is just really. . . catchy. So is 'Whisky for My Men, Beer for My Horses,' and 'Big Red.'

Alas.

21. Butch Walker - Mixtape. Hm. I like it. [Smile] I like the lead singer's voice.

Added: Is there a cultural meme about the car wash that I'm missing? There's a surprising number of songs that mention the car wash, meeting at the car wash, using the car wash as a metaphor, hanging out at the car wash. It's like musical study of dry cleaners. Is there a reason for this?

SHeDAISY's Come Home Soon is nice, though I don't really like their other stuff. Rascal Flatts is great, although LAUNCH doesn't seem to have I'm Moving On in the videos section, that's a great song. Oh, and Joe Nichols Cool to be a Fool.

katharina, if you get a chance, check out "Under the Bridge" by RHCP.

And PSI, I think you're wrong. They don't suck now, and really, they don't rock too much less. They're just more prone to release their softer stuff as singles since "Under the Bridge" and "Otherside" became such commercial successes and they lost their socks. That's my opinion, anyway.

The only country concert I've ever attended was Reba. She's really good. (She's also related to one of my uncles somehow.) Brooks and Dunn opened the show; I didn't like them so much.

...and as long as we're confessing, I have to confess that, while I don't much love his politics, I really like Toby Keith's music. And some of his videos are just so funny.

1 - I like twangy music. If any of you knew me you'd realize what a confession that is.
2 - Despite my admitted taste for twangy music, I can't get in to mainstream country music.
3 - For me, listening to Gwen Stefanni's voice is like getting my teeth drilled. Without novacaine.
4 - I saw the Chili Peppers in San Francisco a few weeks ago, and despite sounding fine on record Anthony Kedis doesn't sing so well live. It's not that he can't sing, I just think that in a live situation he's a lazy singer. He couldn't hold a note in a bucket.
5 - Despite my natural aversion to Tecno-pop, I can't stop listening to The Postal Service. [Evil Laugh]
6 - Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson is one of the greatest albums ever, that's saying a lot considering I don't like concept albums.

Wow. I just heard Eminem's "Lose Yourself". He's really amazing.
Really? For the first time? It seems like that song's been around forever and a day, but that might just be me. I actually really like Eminem, and even borrowed 8 Mile off a friend so I could see more. I like his lyrics and sometimes even his musicality, which is pretty good, I think.

Oh, and I should mention that I finally got Ricky Martin out of my head. [Smile]

Really? For the first time?

In some ways, I live a very sheltered life. Yeah, that was the first time I heard it in its entirety. I'd heard snatches of it some places, when the ads forthe movie came out. I used to live right next to 8 Mile, and I do sort of want to see that movie. The Detroit I knew was very different from that scene, though.

I'm curious, does anyone not like Evanescence? I can't remember anyone ever saying they didn't.

"Lose Yourself" is one of his best works. That, and "The Real Slim Shady," which is such superb satire!

I don't really like Evanescence. I find them vaguely annoying. Most of that comes from the fact that I've not really heard much of their work, but I can stomach the occasional "Bring Me to Life," I guess. If I have to. And if there's no Ricky Martin. [Wink]

Though I have gone on a No Doubt kick recently, thanks to this thread.

Shania Twain's video for I'm Gonna Getcha Good to come on. My stars, WHAT is that video? It's LOTR crossed with Tron and the Iron Giant.

Catchy song, though.

It's a great song -- lot's of fun. But you're right, that is one seriously BIZARRE video. And what does it have to do with getting anyone? She doesn't get caught!

I liked the helmet-thing, though. NOT her hair that color. *shudder*

Katharina, that movie will knock your eyes out!
The cussing. Every second it's f word this and f word that.
But, it is a good movie despite that. I like the theme of it. A young man trying to make his dreams come true.
There is also a lot of people beating each other up.

I wish Celine Dion would go away. Her version of At Last is beastly.

24. I'm listening to RHCP's By The Way. I kind of like it. I like the contrast between the styles within, and I like the lead singer's voice. I don't love it, but it's much better than the other one I heard.

I can't get the sound to work on the music videos through yahoo. Does anyone know why that might be?

I don't Kara, I'm sorry. It worked when I tried it.

25. Wow!! Damien Rice - Blower's Daughter (Movie Version). Boring video, but what a beautiful, beautiful song. [Smile]

26. I really like Britney's new song - the one that sounds a little like Toxic. Can't link - right-click currently does not work. I think it's called Do Somethin'. This probably belongs in the feeling guilty column, but I like it.

Damien Rice is supa-fly sexy, Kat.

I haven't seen the video, but I agree with you about the song. [Smile] You might also want to check out "Cannonball" and "Older Chests" if you don't know them already.

And I'm listening to Evanescence - "Hello" thanks to Hatrack! [Hat]

(ketchupqueen, I haven't really listened to Ace of Base for quite some time, but at one moment I really liked them too... [Big Grin] )

27. Oooo...Hoobestank - The Reason. I love that!

I realize that most of these songs have been on the radio for months, but I don't listen to the radio, so it's exciting for me.

Ralphie, I'm off to hunt up pictures of Damien Rice, although just his voice would probably win me over.

KQ- I LOVE Ace of Base! I got The Sign album on tape when I was 13 and haven't stopped listening to it since!

The "Dragostea Din Tei" craze revived my crazy eurotechno addiction and I made a new mix CD that I've been listening to ever since. It's mostly international, with a few funky American songs that I need an excuse to listen to. Here is what I put on there:

Dragostea Din Tei - O-Zone
Around the World (La la la la La) - A Touch of Class
Hey Ya! (Radio Mix) - OutKast
Voulez-Vous Danser - Ace of Base
Let's Get It Started (Spike Mix) - Black Eyed Peas
Gotta Get Thru This (D'n'D Radio Edit) - Daniel Bedingfield
Le Raï C'est Chic - Cheb Mami feat. Sting
Call On Me (Radio Edit) - Eric Prydz
Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted) - Depeche Mode
Oran Marseille - Khaled feat. IAM
Surrender - Lasgo
With or Without You - Grits
Aaja Nachle - Hans Raj Hans
La tribu de Dana - Manau
Pauvre de nous - Massilia Sound System
Olurum Sana - Tarkan
Tomber La Chemise - Zebda
Chunari Chunari - Abhijeet and Anuradha Shriram
Hot Stuff - Donna Summer

1. I hate the Beatles. Can't stand them. [Blushing]
2. I'm a metal chick.
3. I think that Ozzy's kinda cute...
4. I HATE country. Hate it almost as much as I hate the Beatles.
5. I'll listen to almost anything. From GnR to Amanda Marshall.
6. Does anybody else see the resemblence between early Britney Spears (Oops I did it again) ad Emma Watson?

Annie! I have some Tarken music from when I was bellydancing, I love it!

Isn't it fabulous? It's totaly western bastardization, but I Love it [Smile]

I bet you'd like some of the poppier raï singers then, LJ. Try out Cheb Mami's Delalli album and Khaled's Sahra. The song I listed called "Oran Marseille" is by Khaled (the King of Raï) and French rap group IAM. It's pretty groovy.

Maybe I'll just send you a copy of this mix CD...

[Smile] That would be fabulous, Annie. I love that sort of music.

He's certainly not bad looking, but it's really his accent. He's Irish, and the first time I heard him was live opening for Cold Play a few years ago with just him and his gee-tar. Everytime he talked to the audience I started panting.

I'm so easy when it comes to accents. [Embarrassed]
