Ever since seeing "Priates of Silicon Valley," I have liked Bill Gates. Sure, he stole the idea of Windows from Xerox, and he is trying for the largest monopoly, but you got to give the guy some credit for making computers a house-hold item.
Grrr.....I think I am going to try and switch everything to Linux now. I have already made teh switch to "OpenOffice" in place of OffixeXP.

I've never use Windows. I am a mca kinda guy... the only microsoft i use is my xbox... and thats mainly with third party games....

Stryker, here's your irony:
MS makes most of it's money licensing permission to put a game on the X-Box. It actually loses money when selling the X-Box console to you.

I don't think Ballmer is all there mentally. Last month he said that iPod users are music pirates, and then there's his "developers, developers, developers" chant.
Microsoft's PR machine is trying to downplay what he said by stating that Ballmer never said Microsoft believes Linux violates all those patents. They're just going to wave around a third-party report that says so.

If Linux DOES violate patent law, why shouldn't Microsoft try to stop them - given that Microsoft has to obey patent law and competes directly with Linux?

I just find it delightfully ironic that every piece of software out there violates boatloads of patents (many not cross licensed), which quite clearly shows how amazingly broken the current state of sofware patents is.
Xap -- most likely because IBM has said it will put its patent portfolio to use to support linux. Not to mention that there's nothing saying MS has to "obey" patent law (whatever that means) -- in fact, policy at MS (as in every other software company) is to ignore patents when developing, because knowledge of a patent violation triples liability, so you're statement's just plain wrong anyways.
