I know this seems random, but I just got my new car recently, and I wanted to know what everybody else drives.
I drive a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. (manual transmission of course) [Cool]

About 275 yards.

Wow that's impressive. Consistently? I do about 225 on a regular basis, though I haven't played in a while. [Dont Know]

Oh, sorry. We have a '93 Honda Civic (manual), an '88 Toyota Camry (automatic), and a '93 Plymouth Grand Voyager (automatic).

Dude, I can't drive a golf ball. I can barely hit it straight enough to go through the windmill.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

That's putting. And if you're trying to drive it through the windmill, that could be the source of the windmill problem.

I try to avoid driving, except for on long open empty stretches of highway, since I get flustered and jump curbs when there are too many people around.

[Cry] I used to drive a brand-new car till it got wrecked. Now I drive a 91 (?) Oldsmobile something or another. It's name is Old Blue, and it's main good feature is that it came without a car payment while we were still paying off the other one. That said, I have to admit a certain amount of fondness for Old Blue. One day soon he'll be traded in for a newer mini-van, though.

Nice to see you back, Gap Boy!

Yeah, of course I drive my husband crazy.

Oh wait, that wasn't the question.

Um, here, I don't drive. I either walk or take a trishaw. Hubby does the same with the addition of also riding a motorbike. When it works, which it does now since he got it serviced yesterday.

And while it was being serviced, the mechanic guys found a termite nest in his seat. They cleaned it all out, so no more termites. Yay!

We don't particularly like automatic transmission. And my husband hates to spend money on new cars. He will push these two cars for as long as the repairs stay within a reasonable price range.

So far they have been pretty reliable, for the most part. [Smile]

Thanks Space Opera, good to be back. I haven't been on Hatrack for months.

Anyway... you are in a very safe car. I just totalled my 97 Subaru Legacy Wagon. I rolled in it 5 times, and the interior of the car was unscathed, and I walked away without a scratch. Luckily, I wasn't at fault, and I got 900 dollars more than what I owed on the car, so I had enough for my Jetta. 26,000 miles on it for $10,500.

I drive a domestic - Frogger - my '93 Ford Ranger. He's a manual, is kind of beat-up (especially after my run-in with a Yamaha a few months ago), and has 128k miles on him, but he still works remarkably well (with the exception of the heater at the moment - it's a good thing I can now actually park in our garage and Phoenix winters aren't very cold).

When not driving my truck, I drive hubby's 2000 Honda Civic - gotta love that gas mileage!

My first grownup car (A car built within the last 15 years!). A 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid. Technically used, since it was a floor model, but only 100 miles on it at purchase. Still had the new car smell. Also the VIN is 0000003, so it was the 3rd Hybrid Civic off the line that year.

Prior to this car (just about 2 months now!) was a string of old early- to mid-80s Volvo 240s.

This is very reassuring to me, as I also drive a 97 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Her name is Spanner, since her job is to take care of the loose nut behind the wheel, and my husband thought "Wrench" was too masculine-sounding. Her previous owner was horribly unkind to her, however, and she's needed a ton of expensive repairs. I still love her, though.

Yes, Imapalas are popular cop cars, particularly among the highway patrol around here. That similarity has its pros and cons as far as I can tell. The down side is some people panic until they figure out you aren't a cop, which means swerving and breaks. The up side is few things will get people to move out of your lane faster than pulling up behind them in a black Impala.

Ludosti will back me up on this, I'm sure...

Going the speed limit here gets you into accidents. Well, come to think of it, just driving is going to get you into accidents here, but not going the speed of traffic even more so. Phoenix drivers seem to be a bit more aggressive than most, and 20+ mph over the speed limit is an accepted norm on the freeways (when they aren't stop and go traffic anyways) and 10+ for the surface streets.

The cities are trying, half-heartedly, to solve this problem.

Mack, yeah, that's why they lowered the speed limit to 55 back during the energy crisis, I believe. That was my understanding of why they did it at the time, anyway, but I was just a kid.

Kat, I take it that your car hasn't had a repeat of the whole "high RPMs, low speed" thing that it suffered from some time ago? That's good news!

I drive a silver 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer with about 45,000 miles on it at the moment. I've also got an 87 Chevy Nova, but it's been so long since I've driven it that not too long ago I noticed thick spiderwebs going between its hubcaps and the curb. Oh, and I noticed the other day that one of its tires has gone flat. I should really drive it a little more--isn't good for a vehicle to just sit like that.

mack, I've known that; it's one of the reasons there was the mandated 55 MPH law until the 90s.

I _especially_ know it now in my hybrid. At 75ish (my normal highway speed), it's hard to stay at 40 MPGs. When I drop it to 55, I can get closer to 60 MPG.

It looks to me like that curve is based on a composite of data from various cars and driving conditions. I suspect the ups and downs in the curve depend on gear shift points, and speed limits.

I drive a 2001 Toyota Prius, we also have a 1997 Chevy Lumina, a 1990 Toyota Corolla, and the antichrist: A 1983 chevy 3/4 ton pickup. (since I only drive it about 300 miles a year, we actually probably pay over a dollar a mile in insurance)

Question for Bokonon: Do you use a readout to tell you your gas mileage? Or do you actually do the calculation?

I find that the Prius does a lousy job of telling me what kind of mileage I'm getting. It's been off by ~3 mpg in either direction.

Hey Cashew, what engine do you have in your Silvia, the SR20DET? I love the Silvias and 180s.

About the speeding thing, a mechanical engineer friend of mine told me that it had to do with aerodynamics and wind resistance. When driving above 60mph, the engine starts fighting wind resistance. If you look at an acceleration graph, you'll notice that it climbs in the lower gears and then plateaus when you reach the higher gears. Basically the lighter and more aerodynamic the vehicle, the better it is at handling the 60+mph speeds. Think Toyota MR2 versus a school bus.

Along similar lines, having a wing on the back of your car is nothing but dead weight, because unless you're constantly drive above 60mph, it won't give you any downforce. That's why it makes sense on race cars and just looks stupid on street cars. You'll notice cars like the Porsche Carerra and other exotics that have wings that automatically deploy and adjust, don't begin to do so until around 55mph.

No, it's not. [Smile] But it is worth driving 55 on back roads when it's more direct. My commute takes 5-10 minutes longer than before[1], but it's a shorter and more interesting route. And I get better milage even with the traffic lights.
