Alright, despite Ketchup's best efforts, I'm not getting much by way of emails.
So, let's try this:
Is this survey for you?
Are you planning on attending WenchCon? (Yes/No)
If you have to ask, probably not.
Transportation
Are you planning on attending this event? (Yes/No)
Are you arriving by plane? (Yes/No)
If not by plane, are you looking for a carpool from your region to Atlanta? (Yes/No)
Dates and more Dates
What month would be good for you?
If March, what dates?
If May, what dates?
Accomodations
Do you have any special needs in determining accomodations? (Yes/No)
Do you have any preferences in accomodations? (Yes/No)
Are you interested in sharing a room? (Yes/No)
If you answered yes to any of these questions, please make a note here so we can attempt to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
If not, I'm going to lock you in a closet with Kat and Ben as they continue the hotel debate.

I would like to attend. I will be driving, not flying.
I liked teh Winngate, but if we can find a cheaper or better situated place, that's also very cool. Airport shuttle would be a plus, but we'll either go up in price or down in neighborhood, I fear.
If I had a bigger house, this wouldn't be sucha problem. *sigh*
The only weekend I CAN'T do is the second one in March, so far as I know right now.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
All right, I'll do it again. Since Olivia did, and she's cool.
I will attend. I will be flying. I can do any time. May 21st is my birthday, and is a Friday, so I'd be travelling on my b-day if we do it then, but that's just fine with me-- as long as we get to have a cake.
I will be bringing my infant daughter; she will be 11 mos. in March, 13 in May. If we don't use a shuttle, whatever vehicle we get picked up in will need to be able to accomodate a fairly large carseat (it requires pushing the front seat all the way forward in our car and in my mother-in-law's, and they're not small cars). I don't really care where or when we do it, although I would like the cheapest place possible that's decent, and I would prefer somewhere with laundry facilities on site, since you never know what's going to happen with a baby. I do think it would be nice if no one had to miss stuff to drive to and from the airport (but it won't be me, so hash it out amongst yourselves).
I do wish to share a room, but whoever wants to be my roommate (or roommates) will have to be okay with not being noisy at night or being in/out all night. I don't mind if you come in late, or want to be out at night, just please keep the noise, light, and opening/closing of doors to a minimum, 'cause if my little monster doesn't sleep, she gets evil. Since I do intend to be still nursing her at that point, I'd prefer an endowed woman (or women), although any woman or women is preferable to guys. Non-smoker, please. If any of all y'all would like to bring a child but aren't sure if that'll be compatible with your fun, I hereby invite you to share a room with me, and I'll be happy to watch your kid(s) as long as it's fine with them while you stay out late or whatever, as long as you're willing to respect my needs.

I thought you were joking Ketchup - I still have your email.
But thanks for the thought.
I'm going to nix hotels near the airport because Olive's hubby reinforced my basic opinion of Virginia Avenue.
The Wingate is a known quantity and unless the prices vary significantly, that sounds like our best bet.
If anyone else wants to weigh in with an opinion on dates, I'll post my suggestion for the dates Saturday.

I would really like to come. So yes, but parents and/or scheduling conflicts could stand in my way.
I will be arriving by car, and it would be nice to have other people in the car.
March:insanely busy month
May: all weekends are good except 6th-8th.
As long as I have a semi-comfortable place to sleep I will be happy. I would prefer to share a room, and I am not picky about roomates.

I would like to come.
I could probably work out coming in early March (one of those first two weekends, for example). I am open to considering other times, as long as it's not during Passover.
I liked the Wingate, for reasons previously mentioned.
I will be driving from Florida, like last time.
I need to be someplace where I can park myself from Friday before the sun goes down till after dark Saturday night. Last time we worked that out by having activities at the hotel all day Saturday, and bringing food into the Wingate and having a communal lunch buffet that was mostly dairy/vegetarian.
I will want to share a room.
I want to be there when Olivet, Ben and Ophelia, and some of the characters from last time were there.
That is all. (Sorry, Ben. )

I'm not picky on hotel. I will want to share a room. I promise either to not get sick and cough all night this time or to bring along cough syrup with codine that will knock me out so I don't keep you up. Sorry again, mack.
As far as time, the first weekend in March would be lovely, or anytime in May. I'd rather Olivia be able to be there than anyone else, though, since this is kinda her baby.

With the kids and Joe's schedules being the priority around this house, I have no idea if I'll be able to make it until probably a few weeks before the actual event.
Plan away. If I can come I'll most likely bring Aubree. I'll drive and share a room if needed. I have no hotel preference since I've never stayed in Atlanta. I'd prefer something in a relatively safe area since I'll be driving.

Easter weekend is out, obviously. Otherwise, as of right now I am free for all weekends in March and May. Oh, except I'd like to finally make it to Andrea's May Revel this year, so I guess I'm not available for whatever weekend that is.
I will likely be flying, though I might take a bus or train if it is significantly cheaper. I would also consider carpooling if there was a group from my area driving down. I'm expecting I'll probably end up flying, though.
It was nice to have my own room at KamaCon, but I doubt I could afford it this time. So I will likely be up for sharing a room. I'd rather share with just one other person than three, because I still like having enough personal space to myself. No smoking, please.
If the hotel we choose is accessible via public transportation, then I would have no problem making my own way to the hotel from the airport. I like the MARTA.
Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :
Yes, I will be attending Wenchcon.
I would be flying in.
If in March, I can only do the first weekend. I have plans that can't be changed the second weekend, I'm in a wedding the third weekend (in north Georgia, as it happens, but I will be at the bride's beck and call), and Easter the fourth weekend.
If in May, any weekend is fine.
Sharing a room.

The weekend of the 12th is the best for me in March. I might be able to make it the weekend of the 19th, but I would have to leave kind of early on Sunday, so the 12th would be better. As for May, any time after the 7th would probably be good.
My mode of transportation would depend on the date.
I vote for the Wingate, too. It worked out very well last time.
I want to share a hotel room; if people from my family come, I'll share it with them.
Like Ela (and Shlomo and narr), I need vegetarian/dairy food and somewhere to stay from Friday night to Saturday night.
I think that's it.

Yes, Lime and I plan to attend.
We may fly, or may carpool if other Midwesterners go (esp. Wisconson/Chicago people)
March - Not Easter weekend. May - Not Mother's Day weekend, as that's also when we'll celebrate my birthday and my nephew's birthday, most likely. In fact, May's just harder, because of birthdays - the parties aren't planned yet.
No special accomodations except non-smoking, which is always available anyway. We prefer not-to-expensive. We may be interested in sharing a room with someone else, depending on cost (the more expensive, the more likely we'll want to share ).

We have a lot of conflicts in the March/May scenario.
If we go January, we have a lot of options, but it's short notice for a lot of people who want to fly.
So let's see which weekend works better for those interested:
The last weekend in January (29-30) Or the first weekend in February (5-6)

The last weekend of January is my last fencing tournament of the competitive season.
The first weekend of february could work.

MLK weekend is the 15-17 of January.

I also have access to a good deal of fencing equipment to bring. I have my own gear (jacket, plastron, knickers, mask, glove and 3 electric weapons and 1 dry).

So we can surely do fencing again.

Posted by xnera (Member # 187) on :
rivka, I took AirTrans to the last Wenchcon. I was supposed to have a non-stop flight down there, but they added a stop on the day of the flight, which caused me to get in later than planned. If I was just traveling on my own I wouldn't have cared, but I was meeting folks at the airport and I was worried the entire flight because I didn't have anyone's phone number, so I couldn't call them and let them know I would be late. So it added some unneeded stress to the trip. I also got on the wrong plane going home, because they had two planes with similar destinations leaving within ten minutes of each other on two consequetive gates. I swear, the doors were ten feet apart, at that. We did figure it out before the planes took off, but in my mind, it should have never happened. I mean, why didn't the flight attendent catch it when I turned in my boarding pass? So everything did work out okay, but I wasn't too impressed with them. I might end up flying them again if they're the cheapest, but if I have another choice I'll probably choose the other carrier.
MLK is rather close for me. I was hoping for later than sooner so I could save up some more money. That being said, I could probably come as the airfare isn't bad at all right now. I need to sit down with the numbers again and figure everything out.

When did we rule out May again?
Ben, you live there. Of course it's easier for you. It's not okay for a lot of people that have wanted to go from the beginning.
Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :
No one weekend in march worked for anybody. there were previous engagements for a lot of people in march so no one weekend worked. this weekend does not seem to offer any conflicts other than it being "soon".
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
That's a real conflict. Too soon to save money and plan is a problem. The first weekend in Marche worked for the vast majority, and the second weekend in March worked for a slightly different vast majority. January does NOT work for the vast majority.
"Soon" is a big deal when you don't have money to travel that quickly and it's less than a month away. Me, Coccinelle, ElJay, Taalcon, Miro, and KQ have all said that if it is in January, we can't come. Do you just not care about that?
Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :
i never said that. Kat, this isn't personal. i know for a fact the second weekend in march didn't work for several people, i was under the impression that first weekend was an issue too.
Something to take into account for MLK is since it is as early as it is, hotel rates will still be low. it's a 3 day weekend, and flight rates will still be low due to it being a "low travel" time.
something to take into account for March is more time to plan, since it is so far in the future you may be able to get good rates for hotel, but i dont think flight rates will be as low (i could be wrong), but you also get less time due to no 3 day weekend.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Some people are going to have to take off work whether it's a 3 day weekend or not. And sometimes you get a discount, but sometimes plane fares are higher for vacation weekends, depending on where you're coming from and where you're going.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
What was wrong with the first weekend in March? I know of two people who said they couldn't come then, which is sad, but that's not nearly the six people who have said that January is out.
It isn't minor. It's two weeks after Christmas with less than a month's notice. You don't have to buy a plane ticket - of course it works better for you. Why not do it the first weeknd in March?
You're blowing off everyone who says that money is an issue and it's too soon to plan. Why not plan for May, then? January is too soon. You are blowing off everyone who has posted saying it's too soon.
It would be nice if it works, but it doesn't.
Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :
i dont think you are going to get a round trip ticket for less than $200 either weekend. i could be wrong. i just think it will be cheaper MLK.
i would love for as many people to come as possible. but well, last year i think we had about 17 or 18 people (i may be undercounting) and we had a lot of fun. i think we could get 15+ people this year and still have alot of fun. even MLK. Kat, i'd love to see you, i'd love to see Dave. i think you are both hella rad. but i'd also love for people to spend MORE time with each other and a 3 day weekend would facilitate that. i think it would be great if you guys could be there, however. (yes, i know many people have to work MLK, but if you did take a trip, wouldnt you have asked off anyhow? with a 3 day weekend less people would HAVE to ask off)
Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :
its actually a month's notice. not less...
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
But 6 weeks is the optimum time to get discount airfare, so it's still really soon.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
WHY does it have to be that weekend?
What's wrong with a weekend in March? The college students have spring break, and the people who work have more time to save.
I'm sure it will be fun no matter what. It's just more than a little rude to exclude everyone who has said they would like to come by deliberatlely scheduling for when they can't, so you can have fun.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
kat, I think a good way to look at this is that the Atlanta people are hosting. Hosts decide when they want to throw a party, guests decide if they can come or not. The host might check to see if a particular date is better, but when it comes right down to it they have to make the decision.
MLK weekend is what Olivetta wanted to do from the beginning. Ben too. They considered changing it to accomadate some of us, and there really wasn't concensus on a good substitute weekend. So they went back to the original plan.
I can't come because I already had plans. *shrug* I'm disappointed, but I'll see y'all at the next party. There will be more.

ok, here is what i think will happen. people will still have issues with location, transportion, and dates until the whole thing gets cancelled. i don't think it will get any easier in settling on a date. so that's what im trying to do. Our hostess is more than happy to do it MLK. she is willing to put forth the work and effort to get it done in time. this date works for her. You are right it would be great if everybody can make it, but that won't be the case regardless of when it will be. i personally think Wenchcon worked great with the turnout it had last year (while i had nothing to compare it to, it seemed everybody had a good time).
Long story short, since this works for her, and it's her baby, i think it would be an ideal weekend. The woman has said on more than one occasion she kind of wishes she could wash her hands of it (i'm paraphrasing). Regardless, i think MLK will be fun with the folks who DO show up, and i think it will be great.
Here's to MLK.

No, really, though, we should, since we won't get to see everyone this time. Maybe later in the year, they can come see us.

*hug* You're darling.

1. Sooooooo, katie, does this increase the chances you can make the henna party? I can't offer garb, but we could go watch bellydancing if you want.
2. May would be a lovely time for a DallasCon.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Oooh! Ooooh! That's what I want for my birthday (May 21), Hatrack! DallasCon!
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
Yes, actually this radically ups the likelihood of me being able to come to Madison in February. Bellydancing and henna sound lovely.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
Good. But I hope you decide to come to Minneapolis instead of Madison, 'cause that's where I live. I don't know any bellydancing places in Madison.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
*laugh* I can just see myself wandering around Madison, consulting the printed sheet of paper with the directions to your house, wondering why the river is in the wrong place.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
Could DallasCon be a week later? May 27-30? It's Memorial Day weekend -- although that's not why it works better for me.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
That's fine with me. As long as I can still have a cake. (I'll even get one from a kosher bakery.)
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
I would be interested in attending wench con if anyone is driving down from the indiana area and wants a passenger, otherwise I think I'm out. Yes I would be sharing a room, even a bed, heck the floor or couch.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
That would be funny, kat. But I'll pick you up at the airport. It's only about 5 miles from my house. So no need to worry about shuttles.

Ben told me on the phone that there was serious support for MLK weekend, so I was cool with it even though it seemed soon.
But I hate to be exclusionary. The first weekend in March would work equally well for me. Who would that exclude? Ela and JaneX? Or could you maybe still make it? I'm going to be in Boynton Beach for Christmas, and I think I have your numbers. I'll give you a call.
I put in a call to the hotel, but couldn't get anybody in the bookings dept. I left a message.
I would also be willing to host two this year just to make everybody happy. I'll see when I can get the best rates. Maybe on MLK or March 6 and one in August?
I'd have planned this sooner, but honestly, life was kicking my @ss this year. My mom dying and having to make trips to sort through all stuff, plus the editing thing with the strangely irresponsible Martial arts people... I just didn't think about it.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
Oh, Olivia, it's okay. I'm so sorry - I never, ever meant to add stress to you. If MLK is the weekend that works for you, that's fine. I wish I could make it, but oh my goodness, I don't want you to feel like you HAVE to do this, just to make everyone happy. I know you have had a crazy year, and I don't want you to do anything that's inconveniencing for you.
Lots of people have mentioned getting together in Dallas in May. I personally hate planning (the gift exchange about stretched my powers for it), but other people have offered and I think that would be fun. Kama has mentioned coming to the U.S. again in August, so I think where ever she goes will have something too.
Don't worry about it - MLK is fine. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
(ppsssssst. You'll never make everyone happy. It's impossible. Please don't kill yourself trying. We know you've had a stressful year. Do what works best for you. And if you end up feeling like doing it again in August, we'll have fun then, too.)
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
You are so awesome, Olivia. I'm sorry I was grumpy.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
And Katie, I'm happy to plan DallasCon, as long as the date works for the people actually living in Dallas who want to come.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
Memorial weekend is good with me.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Cool.
I'll get on the planning some time next year.

I'm checking with the Wingate to see when we can get the best deal, and I'll let that be the deciding factor.
Has Jenny G stated when she could make it? I was hoping to have her be the planner of events, since she's so good at planning and being being bossy Without her, I don't think a WenchCon could work.
Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :
As far as I know, JennyG hasn't commented on the thread at all - the new job and whatnot is demanding.
As for my arbitrarily deciding MLK, I couldn't get a good weekend that fit everyone and I only got three emails from people apprising me of their availability.
That said, nothing prevents us from doing a clump (my vocabulary expands daily - as did my co-workers' when I skimmed the two extra pages of this thread ) and consider the possibility of a more grandiose Con later in the year.
For what it's worth, I wasn't actively trying to exclude anyone and while I was concerned about aiming for January or February as being amazingly short notice, there were several people who could fit MLK into their plans.
However, if people would like to start posting their availability for a Summer Con, say June through August, we can gauge the interest for that.

Do you REALLY want a Con in the south during July or August?
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
I think...that with one planned in Atlanta for January, in Minneapolis for February, Iowa for April, and Dallas for May, there's enough to worry about at the moment.
Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :
I'm used to the heat, more or less.
But since most of the discussion has involved holding up in a ballroom and watching anime, fencing, playing RPGs and quoting endless renditions of LotR jokes, I don't think the heat will be a particular concern.

I know. I'm just remembering the warm, sultry summers of Georgia from when I lived there.
Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :
Sure, but after the May be Dallas Con, I don't want to run into the last minute crunches again.
But as you say, people probably wouldn't be interested, but for those of you social butterflies and you know who you are, idle question.

Even though I know T is a boy, I totally heard that last line in a Mae West voice. Or maybe Marlena Dietrich. (Which I have no idea how to spell, and I'm too lazy to look it up.)

You know, summer in the northeast isn't that bad. FYI.

Summer in the Northeast isn't bad at all. Except when it's humid. Ugh.
Tick, a friend of mine was considering moving to Buffalo to attend grad school at Buffalo State.
I kept yelling at her that it's BUFFALO.
Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :
Oh, Oh, I've heard you! I think you could do a passable Mae West with enough alcohol, perhaps.
Is there a date for sure now? If so...what is it?
Posted by Arthur (Member # 4026) on :
Mac- Buffalo is a great place. Look no snow yet and it's December! Buffalo State is good for everything except Education. I went there and we only live a few blocks from it. -Jennifer

She wants to do Criminal Justice (I have no idea why).
I WANT SNOW.

I can do "Rich Southern", but I don't believe I've ever had enough liquor to voice Mae West.
The next time I visit, Megan, we can get Jim to pour legitimate drinks and put it to the test.

Oh, what, the Mongolian wasn't legitimate?

hey, when this is all done and set in stone and whatnot, i would love to see if we cannot get a group to Dad's Garage. i tried this last year without much success, i was the new guy bringing the new idea plus things were already planned. but it would be fun to get a group together for this.
