Pardon any extreme problems with my typing.

As Christmas break washes over me my sleeping habits have become more and more nocturnal. In the past two days, I have fallen asleep just as the dawn as breaking (6:00) and woken up just before the sun goes down (4:30). So I decided, no more.

I haven't slept all night and, as of now, in Katy, Texas, it is exactly 8:30 am. I intend to go until noon and then take a short nap. The trick, I find, is exercise. Every ten or fifteen minutes I do some push ups or some sit ups, or maybe do a little cycling on the bike. If you trick your body into thinking it's fighting something, then it won't let itself sleep. However, my arms are very tired from pushups, my legs are very tired from cylcing (I believe I have done six miles since 5:00), and while my stomach is not tired, my butt is sore from being rubbed on the carpet repeatedly. I have very sensitive skin.

I did this when I went to England, too. I managed to stay up for two days and then went on my first pub crawl until the very wee hours of the morning. Now I reflect on this fact with wonder, but I was accompanied by some very attractive ladies, so I suppose some parts of the body have distinct precendence over other parts, which I already knew, I just never knew fatigue was part of their jurisdiction. Interesting.

Here is a list of things I know will lead to sweet, sweet, slumber: watch a movie, read a book, read posts online for too long, take a bath, rest my eyes, or testing that there are no giant pythons lying in various soft surfaces by lying on top of said surfaces and falling asleep. Or something.

I'm even more eager to see if I can make the whole day. I think I can. I spend most of my time in the usual stupor, don't see why this one is different just because it's induced by fatigue.

So, let the great race begin. Or whatever.

(I'm caught in a fall-asleep-at-7pm wake-at-3am cycle. Tonight: brisk walk at 6:30, no early sleepytime allowed, no matter how good it feels. [Frown] )

I'm not sure how one goes about rubbing one's bottom on the floor repeatedly while doing sit-ups. My bottom stays pretty well in place. Have I been doing them wrong?

Maybe I have the wrong shorts on. Or maybe it's because I'm going them on carpet. Or maybe I've been doing far, far too many of them. Or maybe it's a combination of the three. Probably the first and third.

You could get a yoga mat. They don't cost much if you get them from the right place, and you won't slip around enough to get any friction burns while using one.

We need an engineer. (Yo, AJ? AK?) I'm pretty sure that slippage at the pivot point means you aren't getting as much benefit as possible from the exercise -- i.e., wasted energy.

And the chafing. *wince

At least get Goldbalm medicated powder for the chafing. I'm not certain of the physics of the matter but I suspect googling push up techniques would tell you how good or bad yours is. There are lots of little variations of varying difficulty. The more difficult variations that I know of are finger ups where you arch your hands off the ground and support your weight on your fingers as you do them, the diamond ups where you put your hands together so that the thumb and forefinger of each hand are touching to make a diamond shape and the old stand by the pushups where you have to push yourself up far enough that you can clap in between.
