A friend of mine just sent me a link to an NPR interview with Jared Diamond about his new book Collapse. It's found here.

FYI. [Smile]

Wow, that teaser reminds me of those news briefs where they say "A popular over the counter medicine has been recalled following several deaths. Tune in at ten to learn more." Well, that's assuming that I really believe that guy has the vibe on society collapse.

I'm going to assume you haven't read any of his other work, Trisha. I would recommend it. Then you'll have a solid opinion on whether 'this guy has a vibe' on the collapse of civilizations, and when you choose to poo-poo his take it will not be entirely arbitrary.

Wow. Guns, Germs and Steel was fantastic. I look forward to reading Collapse.

There was an excellent review in a recent Scientific American of this book, too. I love that his conclusion is basically that civilizations that choose to survive can do so. And all those who could see it coming but refused to change ended up dying. That's exactly what I've concluded about our own civilization now, that if we're smart we'll make it, and if we just can't change or rein ourselves in then we won't.

I'm for us making it. How about you guys?
