Anybody here tried the Palm Tungsten 5?

I need to replace my Tungsten E and am trying to decide whether to just get another or upgrade to the 5 which is faster, has a longer-life battery, and can be used as a flash drive. Also, it costs exactly twice as much money.

I'm sticking with the Palm OS, but I'm curious if anyone here has direct experience with these beasties.

I have a Tungsten C, and I love it. Of course, it's my first and only palm, so it may just be that I love having a palm.

The Tungsten 5 wasn't out yet when I chose the C, so I'm not as familiar with it. I like the C because of the built in wireless card and the key board pad. The keypad's a personal preference thing though, I know several people who like graffiti better. The extra memory on the C is nice as well.

Too bad we're not living nearby one another, we could beam our business cards- for some reason I think that's just so fun! [Dont Know] [Big Grin]

Why on earth would anybody still want a Palm?

My friend has thus insane Sony Clie of some kind... it open like a tiny laptop (but you can rotate the screen around and fold it back down and just use it w/out the little keyboard if you want)

I don't know the model number but it's got all kinds of features... wireless interent (Wi-FI), a camera, microphone (voice memos), and is just generaly awesome. He got it for half price by buying a floor model from a closing circuit city.

If you don't mind using something that isn't brand new, you can get some really good deals on ebay on this kind of stuff

Ic, mine fits in my purse, and weighs a few ounces.

It has my schedule (with alarms), phone/address book, games, and -- most importantly -- is my current preferred method to read fanfics. [Big Grin]

Did someone say they were looking for PDA?

Oh, Hobbes!

Why Palm?

Cheaper than similar Pocket PCs, Wordsmith outperforms every PDA word processor I've tried, and Microsoft's ebook format annoys me like you wouldn't believe. And I'd hate to waste the software I've already got for it. When you actually go to the trouble to pay for software these days, you don't wanna throw it away [Smile]

I understand this. But can't this become something like an evolutionary dead end? Sticking with your Betamax because you don't want to replace your old movies?

Everything I've heard in the last year or so has led me to believe that Pocket PCs were pretty much taking over the market.

Actually, its my understanding that RIM is taking over the market (well, sort of).

http://www.itfacts.biz/index.php?id=P1342

Basically, Palm is still #1, but has lost some market share to RIM (which now has a respectable bit under a fifth of the market), and MS is still in about the same place (which is unsurprising, really, there's a far more significant hurdle to switch from Windows CE to RIM or Palm OS than between the latter two).

From your site:

quote:
Q1 2004 PDA shipments: Windows almost overtakes PalmOS
I realize it's about looking at the same data and spinning it two different ways, but Pocket PC shipments in Q1 2004 (for whatever that's worth) increased (4%), while Palm shipments decreased (20%). And yeah, Blackberries increased a lot more, but they seem to be cutting into Palm, not really into Pocket PCs.

But you'll have to forgive me, I'm just way too in love with my new Pocket PC phone to see things any other way. [Big Grin]

Icarus, that's basically what I said [Razz] .

Pocket PC / Palm comparison

I hadn't heard that Palm was suffering, they sold the Tungsten E like hotcakes and they've been doing pretty well with the Treo series.

Not that big a deal. My biggest problem would be my library, and eReader makes a version that can read Palm books on a PocketPC. Just not much reason to switch, really.

Thanks for the link, Chris. I learned a lot from it, and it seemed pretty balanced.

A few quibbles I had . . .

quote:
The iPAQ 5555 and Toshiba e805 are the only Pocket PCs with 128 megs of built-in memory,
hmm . . . my Siemens has 128 megs (not counting the 1G memory card I got for it).

quote:
Pocket PCs last around 3 hours of actual use per charge.
I've played mp3s all day long on my Pocket PC. Like about 8 hours Monday before last.

I did not understand what was meant by this:

quote:
Pocket PCs don't automatically backup when you sync. You'll need to select the Backup/Restore option from ActiveSync on the desktop. This process takes considerably longer than does Palm backup, and depending on how much data you have on your Pocket PC, it will take from 10 to 30 minutes to do a complete backup.
Maybe they don't mean what I mean when I say backup . . . [Dont Know]
